GM Shadowtail's Doomsday Dawn (Inactive)

In 4718 Ar—later this year—a rare planetary conjunction, in combination with the power of ancient artifacts erected in the desert kingdom of Osirion thousands of years ago, will create a massive portal between Golarion and the hostile planet of Aucturn, at the far edge of the solar system. If this portal appears, it will allow the ravenous aliens of the Dominion of the Black to harvest brains from the peoples of the Inner Sea region on a devastating scale and provide an opportunity for a nascent entity of great power awakening from eons-long gestation to feast upon the world of Golarion. Fortunately, hints of this imminent apocalypse have emerged from the sands of time over the past decade, affording a desperate chance to avert this doom. These hints and clues have become known as the Aucturn Enigma, and unless multiple groups of heroes rise to the challenge of opposing this catastrophe, it could destroy one world forever while simultaneously creating another.

Welcome everyone,
I will be running a PBP of the new P2E Doomsday Dawn. I have two players committed, and will be running a PC myself. I’ll be looking for 3 more players. I’ll be starting with the Lost Star and moving through as many of the modules as possible.

Because the playtest has just been issued, I will not be requiring full character submissions. . Instead, please submit the below:

-Up to 3 posts or even former PBP characters as examples of your play style. These can be as a PC or GM.

And / or

-describe your usual playstyle, I know it can vary based on character but I find myself and others reverting back to a similar style. (ie, you talk to everyone to find out everything, or you just focus on combat and let others handle dialogue, etc)

That’s it! I will try to base selections on those criteria. If you want to submit more, that is fine, and I will read through anything you submit (within reason).

Character notes: anything official P2E is fine, possibly including optional rules like roll for stats. I would like to start out discussion with character ideas and concepts from everybody so the party can form a good set of characters. And since I’m playing a PC you can play whatever you want and I’ll fill in a need if there is one.

PBP Notes and Expectations:

I saw this guide posted in another recruitment post, and I am a big fan.
Doomed Hero’s Guide to PBP
-I’m in the EST. I work 8-5, but can post before that, at lunch or at night.
-I’ll be posting every day on week days, and I expect you to follow the same pattern.
-I usually bot for trivial RP situations, as well as rolling initiative and saves for players. I’ll be more specific when the game starts.

I will keep recruitment open until at least Tuesday, August 14th at 8 PM EST.

Good luck everyone!

Liberty's Edge

Looks to be fun. Below are some sample posts...I took them from different games (Pathfinder, Shadowrun and D&D 5e). I have been on this site for many years and played in lots of games, so feel free to browse through my profiles :-)

Post One(D&D 5e):

Coming into Town

As the group gets closer and closer to the town, a niggling worm of doubt begins to metamorphosis into a full-blown stomach full of butterflies. The fear and uncertainty of entering a place full of people begin to settle onto the small gnomes shoulders, and unconsciously her steps begin to slow, until, as they finally come in sight of the town, Venssa has stopped moving.

"It's so big.," she whispers to no one in particular. The others, intent on getting indoor to a good meal and warm hearth, do not notice this hesitation. Seeing the others getting farther and farther ahead of her, Venssa shakes herself and quickly catches up. She keeps in Fin's shadow as they pass into the town, then into a huge building that stinks of unwashed bodies, food and strong spirits. Eyes wide and trying to breathe only through her mouth, Venssa is greeting by a human woman and given a bowl of berries. She nibbles a few, as she stares wide-eyed at everything in the room. So much is strange, but some of it seems...familiar...like a mostly forgotten dream. The great hearth, with its large iron pot of pottage suspended over it, seemed to belong to that dream, but the heat and stuffiness of the room had sent her head into a spin.

She was finally shown a room where she was to bed, and the large woman even opened the window to allow a cool breeze in. Bedding down on the floor, the blankets making a small burrow for her, Venssa dropped into an exhausted, and fitful sleep.

Post Two(Shadowrun):

HepCat spends a good part of the day getting ready for the meet later that night with "The Johnson". This being his first real action (not counting running shotgun a month or so ago with Wraith's friends), he wants to make a good impression.
After washing and cleaning up Lucille (The GMC Bulldog), he locks himself away in the bathroom to "Glam up!"
Using almost half a tube of pomade, HepCat has his hair in a beautiful pompadour, his mustache waxed and curled and his sideburns long and trimmed. He dresses in his best, tightest black jeans, a crisp white tee shirt (with his pipe and tobacco rolled in the left sleeve) and a black, synth-leather jacket in a style not normally seen outside a 1950's greaser flick. His old tanker's boots are shined up, with buckles polished and pants are rolled-up to just over the tops of his boots. A silver chain hangs down from the studded leather belt to attach to his wallet in his back pocket. He checks himself out in the mirror. His chrome arm is all slick and shiny, while his other arm is a full sleeve of 50's style tats. When all is ready, he heads out to give Wraith and Roy a ride into town.

"Come on Babies! We are off the line in 5. This is gonna be Boss!"

Once at the restaurant, he lets Roy (and Wraith, if she wants) off at the door while he goes and parks the van. He sets the security and heads into the building. He walks into the bar and waves a greeting at all who are there already.
"What's buzzin, cuzzin? Is the Man here yet? This place is, like, far out!"

Post Three (Pathfinder):

"Assalamu alaikum! May the peace of Sarenrae be upon us all!!" booms the voice of Bahram. "May we take a moment to offer a few words of praise to the Dawnflower, to bless us, her children, on this undertaking, and that if any should fall, that she gather them up in her glowing arms and keep them forevermore in her warm embrace."

With this dedication complete, he eyes the evil-looking beast he is to ride. "Peace of the goddess with you beast. I only ask that you respect a follower of the Dawnflower and not make this journey any worse than it must be!" With that, he inexpertly attempts to mount the camel, failing the first time, and almost falling out of the saddle the second. As the beast rises to join the others, Bahram sways dangerously forward and back, gripping the pommel as if his life depended on it.

My style of play is usually dictated by the character, but I usually try to keep things moving. I usually like to play support for the other players, going off what they say and do, but I am not above voicing my characters wants and needs when the time comes.

I have just recently looked at the new Pathfinder and was pleasantly surprised that I like what I am reading. While I have not gone through everything, what I have read is very promising. I look forward to getting the chance to play and experience it first hand.

Welcome Daniel. Consider yourself submitted.

Liberty's Edge

Thanks! I look forward to learning more about PF2

Well, I'm up for pf2, since I can't get anyone interested in my area.
As for posts, how about a Thread, a
post and a
character. (I especially liked the background on that one, though mechanically my characters are not usually so complex).

I usually post at least 1/day but have been known to post more often when the action is thick. I don't like role-playing just for the sake of it, preferring to move the story on rather than get bogged down (conversely, I'm not all about the mechanics; the story (both mine, other players and the group's as a whole) is important to me).

Good afternoon!

I'd be willing to give this a go if you'll have me. Like Daniel above, how characters manifest in their posts varies on the personality and forces surrounding them. It's entirely possible for one to be dark and moody while others are convivial and gaudy. One thing I tend not to go for is the mysterious stranger route though - I find that doesn't usually mesh well with PBP.

Sample post #1

Sample post #2

Sample post #3

It will be interesting to see how the new ruleset plays-out. Currently, I'm not seeing it as a clear improvement over Pathfinder in its current incarnation, but playing through those rules is the best way to find out!

Very eager to play test 2e.

Sample 1:
Dimitri

Dimitri almost shrinks at the approach and then verbal attack of the men. He is used to avoiding ignorant villagers; used to being chased from towns; used to being the monster. He does not shift the weight of the coffin, he stands his ground. Should he speak? Being found out as a Dhampir would not help the situation at all. He wondered in anyone but Kendra knew. They where dishonoring the Professor. Sometimes he wondered why he strove so hard to protect them people. He wondered if the Professor thought the same way. He opened his mouth to speak and then closed it again. He would let the others speak for now.

In a low voice he spoke so Kendra could hear, but not the villagers. "Calm, my dear. They will not stop the funeral and we will not let it turn ugly." With that he shifts his weight so the casket is all on one shoulder and prepares to set the coffin down. Again in a hushed tone. "Any violence more that what is absolutely needed will only make this worse."

Sample 2:
Merick then glared back at Caroline, his face then calmed. "No nothing anyone does will make anything better."
"I grew up as a peasant. Not a slave, but closer than you might think. At the whim of your lord in many ways. I did something brave once and was rewarded and was started on the route to being a knight. I performed well, or well enough, but was never allowed to forget my humble beginnings. I fulfilled my duties and was knighted and served in that capacity for some years. Then, as I said I fell in love and I did nothing dishonorable and told my lord. I guess the very idea that a peasant turned knight falling in love with his daughter was intolerable to him and so he conspired to strip me of my title and make me an out caste.
I can't really return to my village as it is his village. So hear I am in the frontier."
With that Said Merick headed off to catch up with those seeking healing.

Sample 3:
Fane

Fane listens until he is fed up with all the conversation. "How about we don't worry about what we did or didn't do or whose crime was greatest. If we wish to talk then lets talk about the only thing that matters. Escape.

"I imagine many of us are going to be killed soon."

My play style varies dramatically, but is character based. My characters do tend to be intelligent and expressive. I do my best to make them complex in their motivations and beliefs. I do my very best to ensure the character is interesting and will work well with the group.

Posting wise I am more dialog based.

I have read much of the new rules and am eager to test them in a game.

As a note of curiosity, now that the playtest is out, how do you feel about the multi-class options?

I would love to join you on this adventure!

I am very new to play by post and just started playing Ironfang Invasion a couple weeks ago. I wasn't really sure what to expect from PbP but I fell in love with this medium almost instantly.

During in person play I find myself preferring combat as the improv needed for good role playing can be difficult and awkward. In the PbP medium I quickly found myself drawn very much to the RP element as there is time to think things through. I'm able to really get inside my characters head and make decisions that are much more thought out and in line with what I envision him to be like.

If you select me I'll probably make a clone of Rolar, the Dwarf Fighter I'm currently playing in Ironfang Invasion. You can read all about him here: Rolar Lonebeard.

I don't have many posts yet but here are a few samples of what I do have.

You are submitted. Incidentally, I like the 1st post quite a bit. Great intra-party tension there.

Submission received. Your last sample needs a dramatic sound effect to be played right as the statement ends.

Submission received. I actually liked this post by Rolar best. Good smoothing of possible intra-party judgements with experience from your own backstory.

Rolar Lonebeard wrote:
Nisa the Weak wrote:
My past is a sore spot for me, Rolar Lonebeard, but there is information I must share before it becomes poison to us. I was born a member of the Ironfang Legion, a ‘specialist’ they called me. The role they gave to me I disagreed with, so I betrayed the Ironfang, freed a group of slaves, and... killed the guards around us. After making sure I was free and hidden, I have been living off the land in these forests for a few years laying low so that the Legion can't find me, but I stumbled into Rayne and Dalvin in need. Sarenrae has guided me before to where I am needed, so I take this as a sign to once again stand up against the Legion."

Rolar listens intently as Nisa tells her tale. When she finishes speaking he looks back at Drako and gives the dog a final pat on the head before standing.

As he rises, images of his father kneeling before the executioners axe flood his thoughts. "I shouldn't be judging this poor wretch based on the circumstance of her birth."

Turning back to face Nisa he grumbles something unintelligible under his breath then says "Maybe I judged ye a bit to harshly. If yer up fer killing Ironfangs then me and me axe will fight alongside ye. What's yer name friend?"

You probably already have more than enough candidates, but I am eager to playtest P2E.

I'll try to scare up a few example posts:

Sample 1: Keerik in action!

Sample 2: Davak (the Living Dark)

I don't always play weird 3rd-party classes: Sample 3: Vardlon the old-school elf

I prefer to go along with the story, rather than try to force it in a different direction. I know that play-by-post can be a slow process, and I don't want to do anything that will slow things down further.

Right now, as a character, I'm thinking of a dwarven alchemist/cleric multiclass. Or a punch-happy barbarian. Or an occult sorcerer. Or ...

Even though you have a ton of submissions so far, I'm hoping to join this game with my friend Venthrax, who be applying soon as well. I don't have any Pathfinder experience really, although I have a lot of experience with most other editions of D&D (2E-5E). I was in one (unfortunately) short lived game on the forums here, but I have participated in, and run, many long lived games using Gmail over the last 10 years.

My playstyle is usually to be supportive and help out with whatever the party needs. I don't generally take the lead role, although if the situation calls for it my character will step out. In pbp I like to role play more than I do in person, really getting into the particular situation at hand. Combat is fun as well, especially if we are using battlemaps/tokens for tactical combat.

Here are some sample posts from the Tomb of Annihilation game I played on this forum.

Post 1
Post 2

And here is one from an email game I am running:

Post 3:
As Kilqimore roars his challenge to the denizens of the tavern the whole room shakes, and he draws quite a few looks from the other patrons. A group of a few local farmers and villagers quickly assess that violence is not about to erupt, then mostly ignore the dragonborn, although some seem to share a private laugh about it. There are also a few hard looking men scattered throughout the taproom, sitting alone or occasionally in pairs. Their looks reveal some interest in the bard's words, and their appearance suggests they might be of some use to you. Kilqimore's rant has also drawn the attention of another group currently seated around a table in a corner of the Strumpet. They are a mixed bunch of two dwarves, two humans, and look to be led by an elf. The elf especially turns a haughty, penetrating glare at your gathering before saying something to his companions who share in a laugh.

Finally one of the lone men gets up and wanders over to your table. He pulls up a seat and says by way of introduction "Name's Hillson," as he extends a hand. Up close you see his face, arms, and indeed every exposed bit of skin is crisscrossed by scars, some big, some small. "I work with the mercenary guild here in Helix. If you are looking for real men, stop by and talk to Guildmaster Osen tomorrow. I'm sure you can come to terms with him to hire some extra help." Hillson stands back up, and pushes the chair away with a scraping sound. "See you tomorrow if you have the coin."

Hiya, I'm looking to join. I'm the Venthrax foretold by Sorn.

As for my play style, when opportunities present themselves I like to keep things entertaining and interesting and hopefully layer onto both the character and campaign backstory. This is at least true for my online RPG gaming. Combat-wise, I like to plan my actions strategically, but try to incorporate as much flavor as the scenario permits.

I'm wanting to play Brewmaster Ziggie Ironstout, a dwarf with the (technically) Alchemist class [*squints over at Distant Scholar*]

Bonkleknock sample post:
The tavern was at its busiest when an elderly gnome hobbled in wearing long priest robes colored a rich clay-like reddish-brown with two long, thin strips of fine gold-embroidery on the left and right depicting thin tree trunks artfully wrapped in vines running from the bottom hem up to the shoulders where they delicately branched into a golden canopy. White hair flowed a short distance out of his matching clay-red gnomish cone-hat; equally white was his beard, tightly braided into a pharaoh-like beveled rectangle.
With effort he made his way to the tavern keeper and asked her if he could stew up something special for the first gnome from his clans to return to these parts in centuries.
As he took care of the request he climbed, with a volunteer's assistance, to stand atop a table at the center of the room.
He unfurled a long scroll and proceeded to make a pronouncement to all in the room:
[Imagine something akin to the munchkins speaking in The Wizard of Oz. ]
"The-High-Council of the-Gnomish-Kingdom-of-Duupshamar offers-the-guidance-and-blessings of Bonkleknock-Grynn, Elder-Priest of the-Lords-of-the-Golden-Hills... (myself)... - AND a-bounty-for-evidence-per-foe-defeated to the-first-group-to-survey-and-retrieve-the-sacred-texts from our-former-dominion, The-Burrow-Mays, now colloquially-known-as The-Barrowmaze."
Glancing a bit further along the scroll and muttering to himself a bit before rolling it up as his requested stew was served, the old gnome added personally: "I-may-be-towards-the-feeble-side-with-my-age, but, by-the-blessed-holy-visions-I-have-received, you-can-count-on-me. I amvery-determined-in-my-efforts to accomplish-this-sacred-task, granted-to-me by both-royalty-and-divinity."

Bonklenock excitedly shuffles over to the table with Kvasir and exchanges a few brief introductions before politely taking a small sip of his (relatively) oversized ale and then began:
"Actually, it-isn't-my-bounty, it-is-offered by her-highness Queen Elana'twill Duupshama the Second herself! It-all-began with her-interest in her-great-great-granduncle, Vurplebin Killowick, Grand-High Priest of the-Temple-of-The-Burrow-Mays and brother-in-law to the-king-at-the-time. Legend-tells-that when the-invasion-of-the-dragon Grenginzil and her-army-of-evil-followers-began, Vurplebin-took-up the Blessed-Tome-of-Mirth..."
Sip of ale after sip of ale Bonkleknock continued to share the story of the resistance, defeat, and departure of the gnomes from The Burrow Mays until he finished the last sip of ale and ended:
"... it-is-said-that, to-this-day- Vurplebin-and-Grenginzil-remain-together in the-secret-chamber-of-The-Holy-Hollow, laughing... forever."

That's a sizeable intro post for a previous character. Let me know if you want any other examples.

In and of themselves, they look very good (and I shall be trying them out at some point), however I don't like the way they clash with archetypes as given. I'm told we will be getting more traditional archetypes in the CRB, which shouldn't clash, so that will make me happier.

Quite a few submissions so far but i will continue to leave recruitment open until the designated time (8/14, 8 PM), even if it’s only so i have time to read through the rule book and quest basics.

If you’ve submitted already thanks, and feel free to continue any discussion you want on this thread (like the this thread ain’t big enough for the two of us dwarves) that Distant Scholar and Venthrax have started.

Scarab Sages

Bumping for interest, til I get home and paste sample play posts.

I'm a longtime board member, contributor to Wayfinder, and interested in playtesting the PF2 rules, but my group doesn't meet often enough to fit it between their current sessions.

I have so many ideas I want to try out... Alchemist, Ranger/Wizard, Sorcerer/Fighter, Paladin...
But to begin with, I'd like to try a sorcerer. Assuming it makes for a balanced party.

I really like the idea of scaling spells, I’ve seen it in other systems and it works well. As a prepared caster though i think it might really limit your available spells.

I'm looking forward to trying out spontaneous heightening. I think it may be subtly powerful, effectively granting 2 spells known/level for free if used wisely.

Liberty's Edge

I am looking at either a monk or a fighter of some type...something up front fighting.

I'm not adamant on anything, but I was considering a battle cleric sort, and of course the healing will also be welcome.

I've avoided looking at the adventure so as not to spoil things, but am I correct in thinking there is no character advancement in each chapter? We begin at level 1 and end at level 1?

No need to read through the Doomsday Dawn scenario, I will handle that and divulge necessary information.

As far as I can tell each chapter is a single level. BUT, they jump you around like crazy, including multiple sets of characters and adventures for levels 1 - 17.

Interested, but I haven't made it through a character build, yet. I think I get the how, I've just had no reason but idle curiosity to bother.

This should give me a better reason.

First, a sample of the writing I did during interactions of the applicants for a game. I've had this character start that AP multiple times, but he's never managed to get out of the first book. I do like Gudada Purrun, though. Probably my favorite PBP personality that I've stumbled upon. I have a great number of samples from that character. Writing for him was always easy, even when it took time to get right.

Next, a sample from a current character I'm enjoying. Your choice of the linked post or the conversation through up to 3 of my posts. You can always read more, but the quantity is better in that window. Not a really quick paced game.

Finally, the last post I made with this character in a game that just aborted after the first fight.

I have my share of short combat posts, and of short posts in exchanges between PCs. Those don't tel you as much about how I write, though, or how I try to think like my characters.

Welcome hustonj. I’ll read through the posts after work.

Incidentally, i thought i recognized the name and looked it up. You applied for one of my games back in 2013.

Recognizing the handle 5 years later is a mite disturbing, honestly. I'm afraid to ask what I did that stuck in your head, but I'm also morbidly curious . . ..

I felt about it because you didn’t quite get everything submitted before the deadline.

Meh. Hard failures happen. Didn't actually hurt anyone, so truly not worth stress.

Scarab Sages

Okay, so I realised I have a large gap between my earliest Pbps and the ones I played recently.
The recent ones are odd, in that I'm playing pregens, to gain xp for a PFS Core PC, so the posts don't reflect the intended final PC.

I do have the following, from a while back.

Half-Orc Oracle avoiding a fight with a group of dockworkers.

My Inquistor in a RotR game, setting the scene to question a captured NPC, trying to avoid unnecessary violence, by fooling him the cave monster guarding Thistletop is still alive.
This was a game which lost its GM, so I took over, and ran till the fight with Nualia, before retiring it.

My Archivist negotiating the party leadership.
This was a highly narrative campaign, where we were allowed to describe events, with die rolling and mechanics kept to a minimum.

For playing style, I prefer to post in-character, first-person, with any out of character asides kept separate.
I prefer frequent, small posts, to walls of text, unless I am in a solo side-mission, or have been designated sole party spokesman.
Smaller posts give others the chance to jump in or riff off what's being said or done.

I'm familiar with Golarion, being here on the boards since the D&D days, and have written in-setting classes, prestige classes, archetypes, songs, and fiction, for the Wayfinder fanzine (links in profile).

I'd like to get some PF2 practice, as most of my group have gone out of town for the school holidays, and I won't get to contribute otherwise.

I would like to try this out.

Example 1:
Carr, my now-deceased but glorious Aasimar Rage Prophet.

Funny intimidate

More humorous anger.

Most Epic Save Ever

Example 2:
Taton, my Calistrian Slayer.

Intro Post

IC Post

Example 3:
Karzug, Half-Orc Hellknight Signifier of Erastil. Dumb as a stump.

Intro Post

Basic Post

Another basic post

Several examples, showing range. Some characters are more talkative or less, as a result of their character. I try to RP the character proper, so I do what they would do.

Wow.

12 applicants for 3 slots.

Kinda ugly.

SShadowtail24,

Are you envisioning this game making enough progress quick enough to participate in the official feedback of the playtest?

Liberty's Edge

I would like to humbly throw my hat into the ring as an applicant for your game, Showtail24.

Sample 1. This was a pre-game roleplay scene.

Sample 2 part 1; & part 2 Occurring the day after another character's secret was revealed to the rest of the party, my character decided to see how they were doing, comforting them to the best of their ability to do so.

Character Sample. Here is one of my more recent characters, I am still actively playing them. If you wish to read through any of his posts, I would recommend either the earlier or later posts, as during the middle ones I was dealing with some life issues and the posts suffered as a result.

As for my (typical) playstyle, I tend to build a character towards one of two general roles. I either tend to make support characters, who help the entire party succeed (instead of just themselves), or combat heavy characters. I typically try to converse with others, but I do not typically talk to every single NPC I physically am able to.

Many good applicants out there. I don't envy having to winnow them down to three!

I do not think we will manage to finish all of the parts on a PBP. I do think we can get through enough to provide some tracki sheet information and do some of the surveys.

I thought there's be more as well, but who knows, maybe most people are actually playing in person.

For those of you planning characters already, be aware of the bit of errata that has come out so far, and the upcoming changes talked about in the post Gencon Twitch stream.

What errata? Do you have a link? :D

Here is what little official errata exists (PF2 Errata), although I belive there is supposed to be at least a blog about more on Monday.

Here is the Twitch video: PF2 Twitch

Thanks ^^
