Modified Wrath of the Righteous - Book I

Game Master Lucendar

1 to 50 of 105 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

Hey all, I was just turned down for WotR AP as a player so it got my creative juices flowing. I'm looking to run a modified version of this AP. In the past, I've tried to run it here on the boards according to the book and I had to abandon it because the creeping through the tunnels until level 3 with the mongrelmen just to give the demons time to wreak their havoc disillusioned me. I want to try this AP again with the players starting at 3rd level coming in to save Kenabres to get that heroic feel, maybe scour for friends and families, or whatever reason you have for rushing into a burning city recently overrun by demons. Also, after reading the numerous posts on how unbalanced the mythic rules are, I am going to try the non-mythic route (with some replacements and the use of Hero Points, when we get there).

I am looking for 4 characters so here are the character creation guidelines:

Starting Level: 3rd level.
Abilities: We'll be using a 20 point buy. No ability may be lower than 7 or higher than 18 after racial modifiers and even so, only ONE ability may be lower than 10 after racial modifiers.
Classes: Anything from Paizo is allowed, with a couple restrictions:
-Barbarians, Rogues and Summoners use the unchained version.
-Gunslinger (only Bolt Ace) is allowed and No Occult/Psychic classes are allowed.
Races: Core and Tiefling and Aasimar only. To balance things, both Tieflings and Aasimars do not get their spell-like abilities.
Alignment: No evil.
Traits: Two traits, one being a Campaign trait.
3PP material: No
Hit Points: Max at all levels.
Starting Gold: 3000 gp

House Rules:
Combat Expertise is for free if you have 13 Intelligence and +1BAB
Power attack only provides -1/+2 damage, even with 2-handed weapons
Dazing spell MM feat is not allowed.
Spell perfection feat is not allowed.
Item creation feats cannot reduce the cost of your starting equipment.

I want heroic characters for this. Application should discuss why you would rush into a devastated city (what are your ties? and should weave in your selection of your campaign trait.

Any questions, let me know.

What do you think of her?

Silver Crusade

Well mr. GM I am also a reject of that same recruitment.

the alias here is what I will go with (same as the other recruitment)

I will have to adjust for level 3

Just out of curiosity why no occult classes? I had a cool spiritualist phantom blade idea.

Dot! Love the idea behind this recruitment. Need to brainstorm a bit.

@Corsario: Don't think those stats are a 20 pt buy.
@Edward: Don't think those stats are a 20 pt buy, more like 25.
@havoc: Just don't have a feel for those classes.

Sovereign Court

I'm potentially interested - will need to figure out a new character, as the last time I applied for a Wrath game I made a paladin with some occult/psychic abilities, so obviously that is a non-starter here.

Background skills? VMC?

A fellow reject as well... Have to admit it would be very nice to get further into the storyline than the tunnels.

So, assuming small aasimar are ok (a question for the GM), I'd like to throw Vardan here into the mix (one of those abandoned characters from an earlier campaign) -- with a small edit to his story that he didn't get to Kenberes before the attack. Will need to lose a level, swap done gear and lose the bonus against outsiders he'd rolled for since the SLAs are out.

If the small aasimar is out, I've got a few other ideas rolling around -- so I'll ask when recruitment ends so I can figure out which one I want to flesh out.

I'll start work on a lawful Empyreal Sorcerer, worshiper of an empyreal lord TBD

@Chess: Yes to background skills, no to VMC
@Vardan: If he's small, he's getting the halfling stat bonuses and penalties, not the angelkin stat bonuses. Otherwise, no.
Recruitment period will close in a week but I reserve right to move up date if I have plenty of applicants to choose from. I will provide at least 24 hour notice if I do so.

Ok, I'll go with something else rather than rebuild Vardan completely.

You are right, she would be:
STR 14
DEX 10
CON 14
INT 10
WIS 10
CHA 16
A leader of men...

Silver Crusade

on the aasimar spell like ability thing, can I take an alternate racial trait that eliminates the spell like ability?

@Edward: Sure.

I would like to apply with a Tiefling Paladin that had bad luck in a previous campaign.
Have to modify him slightely to your specs.

Oh yes I'm in for this!

I created Manius here for a run of this ap on another pbp site. We got through the first book and the GM disappeared. I cranked him back to level 1 to try here. I will move him up to three and add in background skills today but his background is ready to go.

I will tell you that in practice Manius comes off as a paladin but is an inquisitor. A formerly evil one.

'No evil' rule everywhere T_T

Well its called wrath of the rightous and not way of the wicked!
:-)

Silver Crusade

ok updated Sabrina...

all in the alias.

also several paladin types seem interested.

Name notwithstanding, it'd have been fun to play a NE wizard with 'get the hell off my plane and stay out" sort of attitude towards the Worldwound.

Really, being evil doesn't equal inability to be constructive or productive, and existential threats are something that needs to be addressed regardless of personal morals.

The thing about this particular AP is you're almost guaranteed to have a paladin in the party and there's several paladin npc's. Being evil just causes issues there. You could always play a redeemed evil character like me!

That and WotR is like the LG campaign.

Anyhow, after considering the available options for a bit I'd like to dot with a cleric of Iomedae. Gotta give you holy warrior lot some extra divine protection and guidance. I'll also go with 'touched by divinity' campaign trait for her.

Will post the character sheet once I'm more awake and it's less barebones.

I'm building a human ranger (demonslayer archer) for this AP. I just need to finish his background.

Drawback for a third trait?

Another failed to launch character. Obviously need to adjust for the rules provided. The drawback answer just tells me how to adjust.

Hustonj: Going to have to say no to drawbacks.

Dotting. I'll try to get a character out by the end of tomorrow!

I believe Terry the thief has been adjusted to the GM's rules.

He wants to live as comfortably as he can, and the fall of Kenabras pretty well forces him to take the Crusade seriously if he wants to live at all.

The_Demonic_DM wrote:

drat looks like I will have to change mine as well

Did anyone ask about VMC yet?

Looking at a Nature Fang Druid as a trapfinder.

Ok, I believe Manius is updated correctly.

Tilnar wrote:

No VMC, DM said as much a few posts back. Same post Background skills were allowed in.

I'm interested. Looking at either a Chronicler of Worlds Bard or an Adaptive Shifter Shifter.

I'd also love to reflavor the Riftwarden Orphan trait for this one in a minor way: My character wouldn't have grown up in Kenabres but would have been left by his parents in the city of Basrakal within the Maelstrom.
The reason for that is that he was born a tiefling with very overt fiendish features from the day he was born, the result of exposure to evil energies while fighting fiends. His parents figured growing up in Basrakal would help him defy the fiendish inclinations of his blood (Basrakal is a city filled with outsiders defying their origins, like evil angels and chaotic devils).

Missed that, thanks Cuàn.

I'm adding my name to the list with an Aasimar Oracle of Life. I've added a writing sample here just for the fun of it, but some adjustments still need to be made to the character sheet from when I built this character for a previous WotR recruitment ages ago.

Lisandra Elsenore

Stat Block:
Female Neutral Good Aasimar (Idyllkin) Oracle of Life 3, Level 1, Init -3, HP 36/36, Speed 20
AC 20, Touch 11, Flat-footed 19, CMD 14, Fort 4, Ref 2, Will 4, CMB +3, Base Attack Bonus +2

Breastplate +1, Heavy Steel Shield (+7 Armor, +2 Shield, +1 Dex)
Abilities Str 12, Dex 12, Con 16, Int 12, Wis 12, Cha 17
Condition None

Background:
Lisandra was born to Arryn and Valerie Elsenore in the city of Kenabres sometime during the 4th Crusader; she is the youngest of three children, with two older brothers named Edgar and Wilem. The Elsenore clan is a widely known for being devout, almost fanatical followers of Sarenrae and members of the Eagle's Watch faction. The family grew to prominence during the 3rd Crusade, as Lisandra's Grandfather Garet Elsinore famously led a series of inquisitions that resulted in the execution of many suspected witches and agent provocateurs. Though Garet was steadfast in the righteousness of his deeds, some scholars debate whether the inquisitions were moral or effective. Tragically, or fortunately depending on a person's point of view, Garet himself was betrayed by forces within the Mendevian crusades, and was assassinated when Lisandra's father Arryn was still a young boy. Though Arryn remained a devout disciple of Sarenrae, being raised by his mother allowed for a more balanced outlook than that of his father, an outlook that led him to switch allegiance to the Everbright Crusaders.

Arryn himself had become a renown hero of the crusades, having led several successful campaigns into the Worldwound, though the crusades themselves were a failure. During one such raid, he rescued Valerie Warden, a woman of untold serenity whom appeared to be of celestial descent. They fell in love, and were married with children in short order. Arryn settled into a more relaxed and happy way of life, though he trained his children for their eventual service to Sarenrae. As such, Lisandra received combat training alongside her older brothers from a young age. Though she was physically smaller than her brothers, she kept pace with them and showed some martial ability in spite of the fact she detested violence. Ultimately, Lisandra showed a far more promising talent for channeling the divine and healing as she entered late adolescence, her very physical being seemingly brimming with positive energy. Her true gift for healing had clearly descended from her mother, who recognized that her child was manifesting great celestial powers. Sadly, her gift for healing appeared to come at a cost, as she gradually grew deaf as her healing power manifested ever more strongly. Though her deafness was cause for grief amongst her family, Lisandra herself viewed it as no more than a sacrifice for the power she had been blessed with. From the age of eighteen on, Lisandra trained to harness her natural talents, and in time became a sought after healer and medic in Kenabres.

Presently, Lisandra lives a peaceful and relatively happy life in Kenabres, rendering medical and divine healing services at various temples and hospitals within the city. Though not officially associated with the Church of Sarenrae, she is a devout follower of the Dawnflower, and regularly worships in her many temples.

Appearance:
Lisandra is of moderate height and slender build, though she is nevertheless very athletic and more formidable than she appears. While signs of her celestial heritage include fine shoulder length silver hair, and dark crimson red eyes, she otherwise appears as a lovely and graceful human girl in her early twenties.

She typically wears her hair up in a ponytail, mostly to keep it from her eyes when she is working. Whilst adventuring, she opts for rugged clothing, including thigh high boots of soft dark red leather, form fitting breeches of light grey, and a white studded leather jacket with red accents.

Height: 5’7
Weight: 112 lbs
Hair: Silver
Eyes: Crimson Red

Personality:
Lisandra has an infectious and magnetic personality, though privately she is somewhat more introspective. Most people she encounters would quickly describe her as bright, buoyant and rarely without a smile or kind word for the people of Kenabres. She is optimistic, and given to enjoying life and all it has to offer, almost in defiance to the tyranny and misery the Demon hordes would like to impose on the people of Golarion. Though she is more open and accepting of other races than her siblings, she sometimes has to fight off leering suspicions when around Tieflings or others with clearly some demonic heritage.

Keirsey Temperament Sorter: INFP

Writing Sample:
The infirmary doors flew open with a sudden bang, soldiers pouring in with wounded comrades slung over their shoulders, or carried on makeshift gurneys. The band of knights carried the banner of some knightly order or another, but it was tattered and blood stained; if they were fresh recruits, they were blooded and fresh no more.

Amidst the chaos, a lovely silver haired girl glided about, triaging all wounded in a methodical but not unkindly manner. She spoke quietly, though confidently as she directed an older caretaker who was following her around with a clipboard "Put this young man over there, and move this stretcher to the corner, I’ll tend to him in a moment." Before moving onto the next casualty, the young medic paused and stopped the stretcher she had just sent away to talk to a clearly frightened young man "Listen, everything will be fine, okay? We’ll take good care of you here." Her bedside manner was impeccable; the boy’s fate was uncertain, but he seemed to relax at her soothing voice and assured demeanor.

Suddenly, a hulking ulfen man in fullplate armor thundered into the infirmary. While every other caretaker in the facility immediately took notice of his entrance, the silver haired girl didn’t so much as move a muscle, her attention solely focused on the young boy in her care. As the ulfen man barked orders at various soldiers in his native tongue, it was clear to all and sundry that he was in charge. Suddenly, one of the soldiers pointed out the silver haired girl to the commanding officer, and he nodded as he barrelled towards her. He was a giant of man, nearly a foot taller than she was, yet the girl seemed oblivious to his intimidating presence. He appeared impatient, agitated and above all… angry "You there, girl, you’re in charge here? Your name?" The second question was evidently a command more than a query. Again, she paid him no attention, which only seemed to agitate him more. "Listen here now princess, I asked you a question!" The girl continued to pay him no mind, much to the horror of the soldiers in his unit; they feared him, and worried how he might respond to such impertinence. The commander’s face twisted into a horrible scowl, and he yelled as he grabbed at her shoulder and yanked her around to face him "Damn you! Answer me!"

To the commander’s surprise, the silver haired girl appeared frightened and shocked by his sudden action, seeming very much surprised to see the hulking ulfen commander. Recoiling back, she shook her head as the older woman with the clipboard stepped between them. To her credit, the old crone had the steely sense to put the commander in his place, obviously having dealt with such men in her time "Commander, that's enough! You’re obviously new to Kenabres, because if you were from around here, you’d know that this dear girl is deaf!" Immediately, the commander grew red faced and embarrassed by this revelation, and backed down enough to allow the old nurse to continue "Her name is Lisandra."

Turning around to the silver haired, the nurse made several gestures that were clearly sign language. Nodding understandingly, Lisandra appeared herself again, certain and no longer frightened as she faced commander "How can I help you commander?" She was cool and diplomatic under pressure, and clearly had plenty experience dealing with military types. The commander had obviously suffered a defeat, or at the very least a setback out in the Worldwound. Appearing somewhat mollified by her response, he relaxed slightly and gave a quick report to her "Our battalion was ambushed by vulture demons, cut us to shreds."

Lisandra studied his lips as he spoke, and softly interjected when she felt it necessary to impress upon the commander before letting him continued "Vrock. Frightening demons; their spores will grow into vines that can strangle a full-grown man. We’ll have to purify your soldiers to be safe." The ulfen man appeared annoyed at having been interrupted, but his expression changed quickly when he realized the gravity of the situation "Yes of course, spores. Yes, so we purify them then? Anyway, this is just the first wave of injured I’m afraid, you can expect dozens more." Looking over towards his men, he stroked his beard and appeared pensive and distracted "Can you handle his many?"

Lisandra smiled, and placed a hand gently on his arm to regain his attention "We can commander. Healing the injured is my gift from the Dawnflower, and it’s what we do here; your men will live to fight another day." Something about this girl's confidence put the commander at ease, and he smiled at her, probably the first time he had smiled in weeks.

Seemingly, it was she who was in charge now; she smiled assuredly while pointing towards the wall before quietly adding "Now commander, go sit over on that bench. Your injuries are minor, so you’ll just have to wait."

@The_Demonic_DM, would it be possible to modify this feat (https://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/expanded-summon-monster/) to also include all archons in the CR-appropriate tables? It already has legion and shield archons, but I'm also interested in summoning harbinger, spyglass and stag archons.

dotting....

Ok Sabrina updated, this time I think I got everything right.

Hey! I might be interested! Question: Can item creation feats be used to reduce the cost of equipment if the crafting is performed during the adventure?

SPECIAL ABILITIES
=================================================
Bonus Animal Companion Hit Point (3x) Add +1 hit point to your animal companion. If you ever replace your animal companion, the new animal companion gains these bonus hit points.

Bonus Feat Humans select one extra feat at 1st level.

Combat Style Feat (Ex) At 2nd level, a ranger must select one of two combat styles to pursue: archery or two weapon combat. The ranger's expertise manifests in the form of bonus feats at 2nd, 6th, 10th, 14th, and 18th level. He can choose feats from his selected combat style, even if he does not have the normal prerequisites. If the ranger selects archery, he can choose from the following list whenever he gains a combat style feat: Far Shot, Point-Blank Shot, Precise Shot, and Rapid Shot. At 6th level, he adds Improved Precise Shot and Manyshot to the list. At 10th level, he adds Pinpoint Targeting and Shot on the Run to the list. If the ranger selects two-weapon combat, he can choose from the following list whenever he gains a combat style feat: Double Slice, Improved Shield Bash, Quick Draw, and Two-Weapon Fighting. At 6th level, he adds Improved Two-Weapon Fighting and Two-Weapon Defense to the list. At 10th level, he adds Greater Two-Weapon Fighting and Two- Weapon Rend to the list. The benefits of the ranger's chosen style feats apply only when he wears light, medium, or no armor. He loses all benefits of his combat style feats when wearing heavy armor. Once a ranger selects a combat style, it cannot be changed.

Demonologist (Ex) At 3rd level, a Tanglebriar demonslayer gains insight into his Abyssal enemies. The demonslayer gains a bonus equal to i/2 his class level on Knowledge (planes) checks that relate to demons, Perception checks to pierce a demon's disguise, and Survival checks while tracking demons. This bonus stacks with any bonuses from favored enemy. This ability replaces endurance.

Expanded Spell List A Tanglebriar demonslayer adds the following spells to his spell list: 1st-protection .from evil; 2nd-align weapon, magic circle against evil; 4th dimensional anchor, dismissal.

Favored Enemy (Ex) At 1st level, a Tanglebriar demonslayer must choose favored enemy (evil outsider). At 5th level and every time he advances his favored enemy bonus, the demonslayer must advance his bonus against evil outsiders. In addition to the normal benefits of favored enemy, a Tanglebriar demonslayer gains a bonus equal to 1/2 his favored enemy bonus on saving throws against spells, spell-like abilities, and supernatural abilities of evil outsiders. This ability is otherwise identical to and replaces the favored enemy ranger class ability.

Favored Terrain (Aligned Plane) (Ex) You gain a +0 bonus on Knowledge (Geography), Perception, Stealth, and Survival checks, Initiative checks and cannot be tracked on any one chosen aligned Plane You gain a +0 bonus on Knowledge (Geography), Perception, Stealth, and Survival checks when using these skills on any one chosen aligned Plane. Likewise, you get a +0 bonus on initiative checks when on this plane. If you desire, you leave no trail on this plane and cannot be tracked.

Trait: Magical Knack (Ranger) You were raised, either wholly or in part, by a magical creature, either after it found you abandoned in the woods or because your parents often left you in the care of a magical minion. This constant exposure to magic has made its mysteries easy for you to understand, even when you turn your mind to other devotions and tasks. Your caster level in Ranger gains a +2 trait bonus as long as this bonus doesn't raise your caster level above your current Hit Dice.

Trait: Child of the Crusade

Once per day when you fail a saving throw against an effect
created by a demon that would possess or incapacitate
you mentally, you may immediately reroll that saving
throw as a free action. You must take the second result,
even if it is worse.

No Racial Subtype You have chosen no racial subtype.

Outsider (Evil) (Ex) You gain a +2 bonus on Bluff, Knowledge, Perception, Sense Motive, and Survival checks when using these skills against evil outsiders. Likewise, you get a +2 bonus on weapon attack and damage rolls against such creatures. You may make Knowledge Skill checks untrained to identify such creatures.

Ranger

Skilled Humans gain an additional skill rank at first level and one additional rank whenever they gain a level.

Skills Tanglebriar demonslayers gain Knowledge (planes) as a class skill.

Track (Ex) You gain +1 to Survival checks made to follow tracks.

Wild Empathy

Wild Empathy (Ex) You can improve the attitude of an animal. This ability functions just like Diplomacy check made to improve the attitude of a person. You roll 1d20+2 to determine the Wild Empathy check result. The typical domestic animal has a starting attitude of indifferent, while wild animals are usually unfriendly. To use Wild Empathy, you and the animal must be within 30 feet of one another under normal circumstances. Generally, influencing an animal in this way takes 1 minute, but as with influencing people, it might take more or less time. You can use this ability to influence a magical beast with an Intelligence score of 1 or 2, but you take a -4 penalty on the check.

background:
Glyas can trace his lineage to a prestigious group of demon hunters from the east. His parents were known as great adventures and using their magic power have done a lot of good in the world.
When they had Glyas they decided to settle down in a village. And though only occasionally would one of them go for a mission, the people in the village were very happy to have them around, showing them much respect.
Then the time came... they were called to join the crusade at the Worlwound, as all their ancestor had.

Very reluctant at first to leave their young child behind, they've decided to leave one of their new familiar hoping that it would be able to teach Glyas some magic and keep the home safe.
Since they were preparing to face the demon hordes, they thought it would be for the best to take imps as servants.

After the masters have left with his brother, the consular imp dutifully followed their orders and has tried to give the boy a good magical education, to protect the household and to tell horrible stories about his kind.

The two were far from friends, the imp used every method at his disposal for accomplishing his goal, and would often leave Glyas bruised and frightened.

Glyas saw in the imp all that was bad in this world including the reason why his parents were gone. Seeing that he could not touch it with his fist or with his father's nodachi he resorted to training with the bow.
The boy trained so much that his fingers bled but even when he managed to hit the imp it had no effect on him.

When his parents returned they seemed distant, changed, cold... They did not care about the misbehavior of their familiar and actually showed more love towards the imps.

People started avoiding them on the street and they became terrified when seeing the wizards dressed in dark robes with their imps at their side.

When they urged young Glyas to come with them at the Worlwound, the child knew it was the time... He sneaked in the middle of the night taking with him what provisions he could.

Glyas swore that he would kill every demon he would set his eyes on, that he would make his ancestors proud and would discover what really happened at the Worlwound.

Have a few ideas, currently working on laying out a chase event for Game I'm running.

Silver Crusade

Definite interest post something this evening

@Tavarokk: Sure.
Caster4life: Yes, there is plenty of downtime in the game specifically for you to craft and do other things per Ultimate Campaign.

@Cuan - the reflavoring is fine - apologize I did not answer earlier.

Summary of Applicants with character sheets so far:
Voyla - Human Paladin (Shining Knight)
Sabrina - Aasimar (Angelkin) Paladin (oath against fiends) (oath of vengeance)
Manius: Human Inquisitor
Terry - Human Unchained Rogue
Lisandre - Aasimar (Idyllkin) Oracle of Life
Glyas - Human ranger (Demonslayer)

If I missed anyone, let me know.

@ GM
Can we submit a minor tweak to a race using the ARG to make an equal or near equal racial trait swap?

edit: Nevermind it's covered in one of the posts.

Got a lot of front liners submitted here.....

The just awarded ad was specifically for a replacement paladin. Might have had an effect.

hustonj wrote:

I think your thinking of another recruitment thread.

The word replacement so far has only be said by you and the GM and the GM was refering to a replacement of the Mythic system for this AP.

@hustonj - the recruitment thread I was in before was for a paladin but this is a team recruitment thread for 4 players.
@RHMG - thinking more about it, I haven't decided between toning it down or replacing the mythic system - I will have to see the party in action to determine how OP they are as is and with mythic abilities.

Putting together a wizard - either Sword Binder (probably one emulating Arazni, with a rapier) or Spell Sage. Not sure yet.

I thought about an archivist bard, but with only a 4-PC party that might not be the best choice. Would be a great 5th or 6th.

Given the number of Aasimar and human submissions, I'm thinking of a tiefling, either Ranger, Ninja, or Sorcerer.
