Upon closer inspection, the pattern of lines in the snow is revealed to be a warning in Common that reads, “Turn back before the winter devours you.”

Beollimandus takes point and urges his horse, Arri, forward along the snowy path.
"Keep an eye out, my friends. Something may already be watching us."

A cold wind blows through the valley, bringing a spray of sleet and broken ice. The sky ahead roils with thick, gray clouds and the sun is only a dim glow somewhere in the mist.

"They're gonna die for the old man by the river, ha ha ha..." Paletress grates as she moves toward Brocken. Pointing at the markings and the blast mark, she adds "But for THAT, they'll SUFFER. Heh."....
Well, it is my humble opinion that you have done lost your grip on the world, that haunt has effected you more than I thought. This is nice weather, and ahead looks like a nice light rain, not a problem...
"Well folks, what do you think, are we stopping here and going back? Or are we going on?"
We have finally gotten free of that crazy ghost, and even if you aint afraid of no ghost, I was, that was plain creepy, the whiteout ahead looks inviting. I have moved my character's horse to the front of the line. This point was discussed in a previous combat scenario - it is the personality of Beollimandus to always be at the front of the line. It makes no sense for "the defender of the people" to be in the back of the line. Even if he is delayed at getting on his horse, he would push himself to the front of the line as soon as possible.
Beolimandus grabs his greatsword and swings at the large weasel.

"Well, heh heh, I thought that creature would be more stoat than that. Maybe that's why it didn't fight ferret. Ha. It couldn't weasel its way out of this one."
Tounis
Tounis casts an odd look at the savage swordmistress. 'Where does she think up these things?'
He moves closer to Sparhawk and begins to disengage the dead weasel from his body. "This will hurt but no more than when this thing bit you."
As he finishes removing weasel he looks about the snowy ground moving a little away from the scene of the battle. "Brocken see if Sparhawk needs any aid. Everyone else stay where you are right now."
From under his breath you can hear him saying, "Alright where did you come from?"

"Paletress you seem like you might be more familiar with this then me. Have you ever seen a weasel this size in your travels? My excursions never crossed paths with anything like this."
How far do the tracks go before they end?
"There are tracks here but should we turn back and drag this weasel back to town? If we don't have answers maybe someone in town could help us."
Paletress, the Laughing Blade
Paletress shrugs. "I can hunt 'em down, heh heh, but migration patterns and me don't get on much."
Looking over at Brocken, she comments a little louder than might seem necessary. "You alright there, Spar? Heh, looks like you and I BOTH need some ouch-b-gone."
Tounis
"Well what are we going to do?" he says this more to himself then the others.
Going back did not seem to be the best option although the old hunter's journal had not really mentioned much else out here.
The weasel's presence while a payday for hunter should have stood out as strange to the hunter still.
"Does that journal have any mention of dates when he started noticing this weasel.OR does it even mention anything out of place like the weather and what his thoughts were?
He kept a journal for a reason if even to track his traps that must be in there. Paletress I saw some tracks have a look and we'll follow the tracks. It must lead somewhere. Hopefully we'll get a better indication of what's going here."
Tounis looks around to see if anyone else disagrees.
brvheart
The trail leads ahead and you enter the Somir Valley. It is getting near nightfall so you need to set up a fire to camp.
Beollimandus

"Maybe we can follow the tracks first thing in the morning. It's getting late and we should find a spot to camp and light a warm fire. I can take the first night's watch."
Sparhawk.
I am down 13 HP still, I think. Can wait but just FYI.
After thanking Brocken for staunching the bleeding, he settles in, offering to take third watch, though favoring his right side.
