Fair 'nuff. In which case, a bunch of edits to Azhra-Mok's sheet are in place. I still need to equip him with gear beyond weapons and armor, but really just starter gear.

And a ling is a fish; those halflings really get around.

PS - Can you put me on the Dead Men Walking doc, please, DM? :)

I just realized that the wild talents list is alphabetical. That's kind of funny considering that 3d8 is much more likely to generate a middling result than anything else.

This means the world has lots of Energy Splash, Far Hand, Float, Lesser Fortify, Judge and Missive, and probably very little of the others. XD

There's more than a 50% chance to get one of those six, and there are 21 total talents plus the double roll option.

Just an observation. I'd have put the stuff I wanted to be common in the middle and the rarer stuff on the edge of the chart. lol

Dragonofashandflame wrote:

I actually statted up a "Ling" race a while back, just as a gag. I might still have it around.

Quick reminder about the wild talents: they're the psionic ones, not the psychic ones

Does it make a difference to you which one we take? I was going to go with the psionic one, as it has some benefits the psychic one doesn't (psionic focus, for instance).

Redblade8 wrote:

Yes, only the psionic ones exist. :)

Well then, that makes my choice rather easy, doesn't it? :)

Thanks!

Since we are using Automatic bonus progression what are your feelings on swapping out a +1 bonus for a weapon enchantment of +1 cost (ex: a returning dagger instead of a +1 dagger)? It sounds like access to magic enchantments would otherwise be limited.

I noticed that as well. That chart really should have been a flat d20 or d100 roll.

OTOH, I don't think there's any harm in having that cluster of talents as the "popular" ones, y'know?

hmm you still need the +1 attunement (you gotta make it magic first before you can make it returning)

So excited!! only 3 day left!!!

Yup! Suspense is as usual, not quite bearable. ;)

@Dragon - can you remove the Shakraals, Dreadmasqued Shakraal et al from the Orcs Giantslayer - that game is still showing up in my Campaign Tab.

Me too! A lot of good submissions.

whoops thought i did that. either that or wishful thinking/denail

"Waiting patiently" is not a strong skill of mine. It's late, so I'll save telling my microwave burrito story for another time. Suffice it to say I tend to F5 this thread, like, a LOT. :)

GL everyone!

Yup! Check this thread several times a day. It's a good recruitment group too, best of luck everyone!

Hey DM, I just want to clarify something:

Muls' Endless Stamina abililty wrote:
Athasian muls add a +4 racial bonus to Constitution checks and Fortitude saves to avoid fatigue and exhaustion, as well as any other ill effects from running, forced marches, starvation, thirst, and hot or cold environments. Additionally, muls gain Endurance as a bonus feat at 1st level.

That racial bonus duplicates the untyped bonus for a lot of the circumstances the Endurance feat covers. RAW they stack; is the intent to make muls damn near unstoppable in harsh circumstances? Just checking.

Yes seems like

LOL, great. I am now really imagining even moreso that on the times when Azh ran, Samhakkun viewed it as a test of his trackers more than anything else.

Samhakkun wrote:

"He's had a three hour headstart. The sun doesn't bother him, the word "tired" isn't in his vocabulary, and he can survive for three days eating nothing but the tail a lizard drops when he tries to catch it."

Redblade's submission tip of the day:

When equipping your character, remember to cost out his/her gear at its price on Athas. Flint and steel costs 1gp on Golarion, but on Athas, one runs into that pesky "steel" issue (on the equipment page, it's priced at 100cp).

Later,
Ghorrin Redblade

Yep. That's why I didn't buy a grappling hook.

My first pass through an equipment list often includes a couple of torches, even if I've got darkvision. I then thought to myself, "Okay, and to light them, a flint and... ah, dammit!"

1 person marked this as a favorite.

"Flint and... ah, dammit!" is the name of my Tool cover band.

With only a couple days to go before "selection" I wanted to pop back in and reiterate my interest. I am super excited about this game and really hope I get selected, while wishing everyone luck, of course.

But as an Athas Elf, no one may want the luck I am wishing for you. ;)

oh and that reminds me.. i',m not sure if i mentioned this but there's a weird flub in the conversion doc that cold iron is 20x cost, but iron is 100x. this is erroneous. cold iron is 200x

that is all

Same honestly. I didn't really know what dark sun was before this but the more I read about it the more excited I get. The deadline seems like it is so far away even though we are getting closer and closer.

So as not to make a literal last-minute submission, I present Enku the Unfailing for your consideration. A mul slave soldier and bodyguard owned by Prince Ninshabur, his fierce drive and loyalty stem from an ulterior motive.

Surely a bone grappling hook is a thing? Jawbones scream out for such a use. Figuratively.

I'd be quite surprised if it could hold weight in any lasting fashion.

Well they'd probably be made from the bones of monsters forged through magical cross-breeding, induced arcane mutation, and raised under the warped rays and godless radiation of the crimson sun.

So, y'know, not your regular bone grappling hooks to be found in kinder, more accommodating worlds; worlds that have more metal - yet are decidedly less metal - than Athas.

Bone grappling hooks (it's a surprisingly sturdy material), but even the bones of the mutated and warped beasts of the Wastes can break with sufficient force.

all non-metal items have the fragile condition and are damaged/broken on a natural roll of 1

A Climb check on which I roll a 1 will pose enough difficulties without my grappling hook thinking, "snap". :)

Giant-hair ropes, giant-jawbone grappling hooks.

Yep, everything is pretty fragile. So use three. ;)

For the life of me I can't find the starting wealth by class for the conversion. Given the stark poverty, I'm assuming it's not the standard gp figures for the classes, correct?

Discipline (generalist): Every psion must decide at 1st level which psionic discipline he will specialize in. Choosing a discipline provides a psion with access to the class skills associated with that discipline (see above), as well as the powers restricted to that discipline, and the special abilities associated with that discipline (detailed below). However, choosing a discipline also means that the psion cannot learn powers that are restricted to the other disciplines (generalist psions cannot learn powers on any of the discipline power lists). He can’t even use such powers by employing psionic items.
Fast: Elves have a base speed of 40 feet.
Fleet-Footed: Elves receive Run as a bonus feat and a +2 racial bonus on initiative checks.
Market Pickpocket (trait): (Elf only) Lifting purses from traders in the marketplaces has become so easy, it's child's play to you. You gain a +4 trait bonus to Sleight of Hand checks to pick pockets in a crowded area.
Mummy-Cursed (trait): One of your ancestors ran afoul of a mummy’s curse while exploring an ancient tomb. This curse was passed down to later generations of your family, but over time, your line has become more resistant to curses. You’ve come to Wati to explore its untouched necropolis, and while you hope you won’t have to face a real undead mummy, at least you have some defense if you do. You gain a +2 trait bonus on saving throws against curses and curse effects (including mummy rot and spells with the curse descriptor) and a +2 trait bonus on saving throws against a mummy’s aura of despair.
Point-Blank Shot (Combat): You are especially accurate when making ranged attacks against close targets.
Benefit: You get a +1 bonus on attack and damage rolls with ranged weapons at ranges of up to 30 feet.
Psionic Talent (Psionic): You gain additional power points to supplement those you already had.
Prerequisite: Having a power point reserve.
Benefit: When you take this feat for the first time, you gain 2 power points.
Special: You can take this feat multiple times. Each time you take the feat after the first time, the number of power points you gain increases by 1.
Run You are swift of foot.
Benefit: When running, you move five times your normal speed (if wearing medium, light, or no armor and carrying no more than a medium load) or four times your speed (if wearing heavy armor or carrying a heavy load). If you make a jump after a running start (see the Acrobatics skill description), you gain a +4 bonus on your Acrobatics check. While running, you retain your Dexterity bonus to your Armor Class.
Normal: You move four times your speed while running (if wearing medium, light, or no armor and carrying no more than a medium load) or three times your speed (if wearing heavy armor or carrying a heavy load), and you lose your Dexterity bonus to AC.
Silent Hunter: Elves reduce the penalty for using Stealth while moving by 5 and can make Stealth checks while running at a -20 penalty.
Silver Tongued: Elves gain a +2 bonus on Diplomacy and Bluff checks. In addition, when they use Diplomacy to shift a creature’s attitude, they can do so up to three steps rather than just two.
Wild Talent (judge): Elves begin play with a psionic talent, determined by a roll on the Wild Talent table (p. 45).
Psionic Powers
0-level:
-Detect Psionics: You detect the presence of psionics.
-Distract: Target gets –4 bonus on Perception and Sense Motive checks.
-Missive: Send a one-way telepathic message to subject.

-Energy Ray: Deal 1d6 energy (cold, electricity, fire, or sonic) damage.
-Entangling Debris: Psychokinetically manipulate material to grasp and entangle creatures in an area.
-Inertial Armor: Tangible field of force provides you with +4 armor bonus to AC.
-Judge: Gain a +2 bonus to Sense Motive checks.

Background:

Darzus and Barak roamed the streets of Urik, their parents having long been sold into slavery. Perhaps they'd drawn the ire of the wrong noble, or perhaps they'd actually been caught in a criminal act. The boys were very young when they were left on their own. They became proficient cutpurses very quickly. Working as a pair they developed a system. One would stop an adult passerby, "Sir, I'm sorry but it seems you've dropped something over there." He would point and the other would cut or filch, and they'd both be off in the dense crowd.

Luck never got much better as they grew older, and so they more or less stuck to this life, evolving their routine and tactics. One particular day, they noticed a promising mark and set about their old routine. Darzus is reviewing the usual distraction lines in his head when, before he knows it, Barak has already gone for the man's purse. The man notices immediately and angrily turns and swats him away. He instantly calls for the templars and the two boys run for their lives. Once they are safe, Darzus asks, "What were you thinking? I hadn't even spoken yet!" Barak replies in surprise, "I know I heard you speak the words!" He keeps thinking about it and realizes he heard the words in his head, not with this ears. Darzus had projected thoughts from his mind he doesn't yet know it, but a Missive. He begins to understand that he possesses some of the psionic abilities that are so often heard about. They didn't personally know anybody who could teach them about it.

They find themselves having to hide out for several days before it is safe again after this close call. With Darzus' newfound powers they up their game, signaling more efficiently (at least in one direction), becoming more confident in their ability to hit marks. Then, one day, just as the two are about to approach a lavishly dressed noblewoman, a tall, official looking man flanked by two templars intercepts them both. "You must come with me now!" he snarls as one of the templars grabs him by the arm. They start to drag him away when Darzus notices a man that was behind his captors, smugly counting a payment of sorts. Meanwhile the other templar is dragging Barak off in the opposite direction.

He's taken to what seems like the kind of estate he would normally be kicked out of, or arrested and sold into slavery if he came within a block of it. He's quickly taken to a private room, sitting across a table from the tall man. "Do you know how we caught you? That man we paid was a sufficiently capable telepath who tips us off to local psychic activity. We're always on the lookout for new talent to train in the service of Prince Ninshabur. Usually we approach prospects with an option to take on sponsored training. It's always in their best interest to take the deal, but imagine our delight when we found you in the midst of a life of pretty crime. Meaning that once I caught you with state templars as witness, you have two choices: answer for your crimes..." He flashes a sinister grin confirming shared understanding of what that can mean. "Or accept the terms of training and loyal usage of your talents for the Prince."

Resentfully, he takes up his training with a mentor of The Way, in service of the prince. At a time when the mentor feels is appropriate, he will become an agent of his excellency, perhaps even rounding up new psions as the man in the streets had done.

TODO More details about his training...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It had been a good hunt. Short. Too short for the hunter's taste, but the aprigs around the city were unusually slow. But they were good eating with just enough fat to make the tougher meat satisfying.

The halfling squatted next to his hunting partner and started to carve up the aprig. His eyes grew wide as the crodlu pecked at the still-warm carcass and came out with the entire liver in its beak.

The little halfling wasted no time in smacking the crodlu with the pummel of his bone dagger.

The crodlu dropped the liver and hissed at the little man.

Basha hissed back and bared his teeth.

There was a tense moment only broken by the sound of the halfling's sharp dagger slicing the liver in half. The hunter tossed one half the liver to the crodlu who caught it in midair and promptly swallowed it down his gullet.

The tense moment was gone and the halfling dove, teeth first, into his half of the tasty liver.

------------
Good luck everyone!

It was pretty funny, in looking at Azhra-Mok's backup weapons, I wanted just one damn thing that didn't have the fragile quality. And that is how I ended up with a club on my belt, and hoping to all the gods I never have to use it...

Shaja's background has been updated, GM. All yours.

Checking in and crossing my fingers.

I updated my equipment to use the Athas value system and swapped out a trait. Everything else is the same.

Yup, not a biggy. Just gear and extra INT languages.

Good luck to everybody!

How's everyone's anticipation holding up?

(stops furiously refreshing the page)

Huh? Oh yeah, great. Never better.

F5-F5-F5-F5-F5-F5-F5-F5-F5-F5...

I may not actually make the deadline. Probably the most stressful week of my life >.<

What time are you stopping submissions?

LCF - Unfortunately, submissions were due by 6am this morning (EST).

Ah well. RL got in the way of this one big time. Hopefully you guys have fun with it!

So, choosing characters was hard. VERY hard. There were so many options. So many characters that I could see battling silt monsters in the Silt Sea, or trading with tareks and pterrans in the dune wastes. Every submission brought something unique to the table, and would have meshed well with the others in interesting and inspiring ways.

Unfortunately, I really can't take a group of 16. So, that said, these are the heroes who are doomed to die in the sand of the Burnt World of Athas:

Bug
Darzus
Sienna Raincaller
Badr Al-Urik
Riikus Steelhand

Those who were selected, please migrate to the discussion board for .. well, discussions and final touch-ups.

Everyone else, happy gaming!!

Thank you!
