So after looking at the other submissions and thinking about my character some, I am going to withdraw my previous character and submit a wizard (cause we there should be at least one in any darksun game). I will get it posted later this evening.

Oceanshieldwolf wrote:

@Lazyclownfish - of the current submissions, either my Netoa or Nickadaemus' Gaanon could be paired with you...Netoa uses a gouge, Gaanon seems to swing fists.

I could just as easily see the two females being a pair or the classic mini/maxi mul/half-giant...

Yeah, I'd be open to either for sure. There'd be a way to spin the double female pair as a funny joke played by the master, or someone working for him. Or perhaps as punishment for one of our characters misdeeds.

I'll leave it open-ended.

Well, my explorations into a Halfling Mouser Swashbuckler taught me that in order to really make the build work I need a level of Monk (which is not allowed in the game). Soooo, back to the drawing board for me.

I really like my basic idea though, so I'm going to keep the "brutal warrior kept as a pet" concept and rework the mechanics.

14 4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 5, 5) = 17
7 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 1, 1) = 8
14 4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 2, 6) = 16
13 4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 5, 4) = 16
13 4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 5, 2) = 15
11 4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 6, 2) = 12
15 point buy. Nope.

10 4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 2, 3) = 12
9 4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 3, 2) = 10
13 4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 2, 2) = 15
13 4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 1, 4) = 14
11 4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 6, 1) = 12
16 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 6, 5) = 17
16 point buy. Nope.

13 4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 3, 2) = 15
12 4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 2, 6) = 13
13 4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 3, 2) = 15
6 4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 1, 1) = 7
11 4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 3, 6) = 12
15 4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 3, 6) = 18
Ouch. I think that's 10 points.

16 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 5, 6) = 17
16 4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 4, 5) = 20
10 4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 2, 6) = 11
11 4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 2, 1) = 12
14 4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 5, 4) = 18
10 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 3, 2) = 11
26 points. We'll go with that.

Hmm.. so I'm kind of at a loss. This Mul concept keeps coming back to one build... which is exactly the build that Chobo said he intended to submit. I kind of wanted her to be willing to do whatever it takes to win, with no real concept of fair. And bounty hunter slayer just does that really well.

I'll ponder a bit on if there are other ways to go.

TWINS!

Or you could go with the Vanguard archetype f you want to play up the paired-gladiator side of things. Sadly you can't take both archetypes as they both replace the 2nd level Slayer talent.

I'm actually toying with the idea of a Strength-based rogue dirty fighter that could fit the same concept.

I'm not sure how much I like a dex-based Mul but I guess that would be an option?

Rogues have some interesting options when it comes to not fighting fair.

4d6 - 1 ⇒ (5, 6, 5, 1) - 1 = 16
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (3, 1, 5, 4) - 1 = 12
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (6, 4, 6, 1) - 1 = 16
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (3, 5, 4, 1) - 1 = 12
4d6 - 2 ⇒ (3, 5, 4, 2) - 2 = 12
4d6 - 3 ⇒ (3, 4, 6, 6) - 3 = 16

So, as much as I am reluctant to roll stats here, I think maybe a strength rogue that uses combat maneuvers might be sub-optimal enough to try for something better than the point buy. I can always fall back on it if needed.

Guess that worked out O.o

I thought there was an actual Dirty Tricks Rogue, but I don't see it on the d20PFSD. Maybe it was a Dirty Tricks Fighter...the Opportunist is close, but still a Fighter....

This is the main draw to using a rogue for dirty tricks.

I could always multiclass after picking it up if I felt like the rogue class wasn't working out.

But this puts an interesting 'clever' twist on the character that lets her function as the party scout/trapfinder. I have a cool way to play it in the backstory also.

I'm rather a fan of Brawlers. they're kind of combat maneuver monkeys.

Dragonofashandflame wrote:

QUICK EVERYONE MAKE BRAWLERS! THE GM IS RATHER A FAN!

lol jk. The brawler is definitely a decent option, but without a way to either make Dirty Trick stick(like the rogue talent) or to Dirty Trick without taking up attacks (like the Bounty Hunter can), it's too easy to counter. That said, the Brawler would be really good at it once the higher end feats were available.

I'll look into both options.

Edit: This archetype choosing undead could be actually really effective. Hmm....

LCF - when I first read your post about paired gladiators I immediately thought teamwork feats. Instead of pairing with a person you could pair with an Animal companion and get some really good bonuses with a class that automatically shares its feats with its AnComp like hunters or Fighter (Eldritch Guardian) with a mauler familiar. Sacred Huntmaster inquisitors can do it too but Doesn't fit the gladiator idea. With all the cool AnComp options in this setting you could have fun. (As an aside I am surprised no one has submitted a Druid yet).

Brawlers can be maneuver kings and have great versatility if you wanted to do something in addition to dirty tricks. Having said that I appreciate you not trying to step on my toes but feel free to submit a bounty hunter it does have very good action economy.

Hmmm... the animal companion does give me another option. Cool idea! I'll check it out, thanks!

I don't know much about druids in the setting as I'm only partway into the first book lol. I have some time though.

Short version, druids form a bond with some area of land that has a distinctive natural feature - a hot spring, a windy canyon where the wind whistles and makes music, a field of balanced boulders, a scorched desert area where obsidian and glass chunks are common due to fires among the dry scrub, etc. The druid acts as a protector of that area of land, and gains spells from it. Druids spend part of their time in their guarded land, and part of their time wandering the world to gain knowledge and experience. They are the archfoes of defilers, whose magic destroys their lands.

...there is some dispute about the ordination of powers on Athas.

Dark Sun was a bit before my time but it always seemed a super interesting setting once I learned of it. I'll try to get something up.

I unfortunately do not possess Ultimate Psionics so I will rely on other people to tell me what exactly my power does. I think I will see what Wild Talent I get and build off that. Also if anyone has any Dark Sun resources for a total newbie to get better acquainted with the setting it would be appreciated!

Wild Talent: 3d8 ⇒ (1, 6, 2) = 9

9, which is...Ectopasmic Trinket? Well that sounds sorta funky.

Here is a LINK to a Dark Sun wiki. It isn't comprehensive, but it does have a lot of information good for a grounding...

And here is another:

ATHAS.org

Has a good synthesis of the setting on the main page, and a wealth of articles from random trinkets to weapons, armour and short stories. Note that most of this is fan made, so may not be germane to Dragonofashandflame's campaign, but it will steep you in the flavour of the setting...

Flavor is what I savor!
...I’ll let myself out.

Dropping out, good luck to whoever makes the team.

Background:
Rilkus lifted the boulder up with a grunt. The mul reflected, darkly, how much he had wanted to use such a boulder to kill his last master. He had been born into slavery, a fate all too common for his kind. For many a year he had labored in construction, doing the manual labor needed to build up. It was strange, in a way, that his life would now be spent digging down. It had happened when he was bought by that dwarf. Rilkus tossed the rock aside and wiped the sweat from his brow as he looked at the excavated tunnel.

The dwarf, Bolvar Steelhand, stood beside him. He had found something, a mine, he called it. A mine which he claimed had belonged to his people from a time before written history. It was a claim that Rilkus had reason to doubt, but a job was a job. Truth be told, when he found that Bolvar had nothing to protect himself but an axe, and that he had spent the last of his coin buying Rilkus and supplies, he had planned on murdering the dwarf and fleeing. That was, however, until they spoke. He remembered the words so clearly, what Bolvar had said.

”I don’t believe in owning people. Yer free as far as I’m concerned. But if ye have an honorable bone in yer body, Mul, ye’ll come with me. I’ve got somethin’ that needs doin’, an’ I need yer help.”

Rilkus still thought about that. As much as he wanted to walk away, he didn’t know anyone, or any place. He had nothing to do and nowhere to go. So he went with Bolvar. And, for earth knew how long, he had worked with him. Clearing the rubble, fixing support beams, and clearing long forgotten traps. So many traps. Bolvar said that they were human made, from when his people were hunted. He taught the Mul, as they worked. And as their friendship grew, so too did their lessons. Rilkus learned how to speak, read and write Dwarven. He learned Bolvar’s tales, stirring in him a hunger for learning history. And, of course, he learned how to find and disable traps. But most of all, he learned what it meant to belong somewhere. To feel like you were part of something more than just yourself. Bolvar, of course, was the one obsessed. Obsessed like only a dwarf could be. But for Rilkus, some of that rubbed off. Humans treated him like property, like a tool. This dwarf treated him like a friend. It made him want to learn more about his Dwarven heritage.

—-

Looking down the tunnel, Rilkus smiled with satisfaction. Bolvar, though said ”We’re done. Yer honor debt is ended. Ye should go.”

Rilkus stared at his friend in shock. ”Go? Go where?”

The dwarf shrugged. ”Yer a free man. Ye need to learn how to start actin’ like one. I’ve taught ye all that I can. So go away.”

”Go and do what?!” Rilkus demanded. Bolvar looked at him with narrowed eyes. ”Whate’er ye damn well please. I’m not yer mother. And...” He looked down the tunnel with a far away look in his eyes. ”...I have somethin’ I need to do. Alone. Or else I’ll be one a wanderin’ ghost.” Bolvar lifted his pack of tools on his shoulder and walked off, alone, into the darkness. Rilkus stood there, watching his friend and mentor leave. No goodbye was given, no exchange of well wishes. He just stood there until the dwarf vanished from sight.

—-

Rilkus walked out into the sun and looked around, the sudden brightness stinging his eyes. He knew the way to the closest town. He supposed that he would go there and look for work. Before he left, he turned around, looked at the ancient mine entrance, and thought to himself how unstable it still looked. With a sight he said ”Goodbye” even though there was nobody to hear it, and walked away. Truly free for the first time.”

And there we go. A Mul brawler with trapfinder. Should be a useful addition to a party.

Is also a mutagenic mauler. Which represents more of a fighting rage than anything alchemical. Might take away the archetype, unsure of that as of now...

D20pfsrd has the psionic rules.

I was going to go pure wizard but Eldritch Scoundrel would actually be kind of awesome for Dark Sun now that I think about it. I guess depending on how many other rogues submit I'll decide what class to pick and just focus on character for the moment.

So, how would you reconcile a hunter character in the slave pits being able to cast druid spells?

Hey GM,

Please consider Basha, halfling hunter with crodlu animal companion, for inclusion in your game.

His fluff and crunch are spoilered below.

Should I be selected to play, I'll of course make a proper alias for him.

Let me know if you have any questions at this time.

Game on!

BTW: this is not an optimized PC by any means. If I wanted to optimize a race that gets +4 to DEX, I would have gone with a TWF unchained rogue to maximize damage output. However, he's no slouch either and will be lots of fun to play. If this game will be for min-maxers (the vibe I get when reading some of the posts from potential players) then I'm afraid I'll have to bow out and let others play and have fun.

===================================================
Description:
Basha is short and stocky for a halfling and has a protruding belly along with thick forearms. It’s difficult to tell his age as his face is wrinkled form over exposure to the elements but his eyes still sparkle like a child’s. He proudly shows off tribal tattoos along with old wounds.

His hair is a wild mane with braids, feathers, and animal fetishes that it’s a wonder he can still walk silently. He’s usually dressed in leathers and carries little more than his weapons and some basic survival tools.

Background:
The man has little concepts of civilization so all he can tell is that he went for his walkabout some seasons ago. Originally from the Forest Ridge, Basha has been traveling the Ivory Triangle for the past few years.

Called to a site of carnage, he picked up the last survivor of a crodlu herd; a young specimen he now calls Sheerat and the two have been ‘traveling’ together ever since.

He latched on to a caravan of House Eannatum and started trailing them. The handlers knew better than to chase the wily halfling away, and Basha started sharing their campfire at nights and sharing his hunt by day. He continued on with them until they arrived at Urik where he was offered a job as a scout. Not understanding the concept of working for money, the halfling stayed near the premises until another caravan left. Prince Ninshabur allowed him to come and go as he wished and Basha has taken a liking to him and the House members.

Still learning the common tongue and civilized ways, he has made himself a valuable member of the House. Just don’t tell him that he works for them.

Personality:
Basha has difficulty understanding civilized customs or points of view, but curiosity helps him overcome his xenophobia. Little concerned with material wealth, the halfling tends to relate things and situations to a cat and mouse game.
Halflings of different tribes still share a tradition of song, art and poetry, which serves as a basis of communication. Creatures that do not know these cultural expressions are often at a loss to understand the halfling’s expressions, analogies and allusions to well–known halfling stories. Basha can easily become frustrated with such “uncultured” creatures.

He doesn’t understand slavery or the concept of a sentient owning another sentient.

Basha is extremely conscious of his environment. He is sickened by the ruined landscape of the Ivory Triangle region.
Like all halflings, Basha is quite talented in arts and can at times be seen singing and dancing to the moon or other nature spirits. He’s also skilled with natural paints and dyes.

While Basha is omnivorous, he vastly prefers meat (on the raw, bloody side) and he is often seen sharing a meal with his crodlu companion.

The following scene describes Basha attitude to his companion and most uncivilized creatures.

Basha and Sheerat, his crodlu companion, were walking into the local market when a noble entourage stopped them.
A silk veil parted from the carriage and a young woman asked, “How much for the crodlu? Can you ride him?”
Not quite understanding the first question, Basha replied in thick accent, “Sheerat no like carry people much.”
The woman would not be deterred, “Well, does he do tricks?”
“Tricks?”
“Yes, you know, fetch stuff for you…”
“Oh no, I get own stuff.”
The noble was becoming agitated, “Well, he doesn’t do tricks, you can’t ride him, then what’s it good for?”
The halfling was also becoming impatient; he patted the crodlu on the neck, “Sheerat good friend. No ask stupid questions.”

NOTE: That’s all I got for him now but I’m sure he’ll take on a more defined personality as I start playing him.

People get nabbed from their old lives and plopped in the slave pits alllll the time. Could easily be someone who was a hunter/survivalist living in a small village, or alone, somewhere on the outskirts of the city, and got picked up by a patrol of local soldiers, enslaved, and tossed.

Inspiration for the character is drawn from Danny the Dog (from the movie Unchained), and Rocket Raccoon from Guardians of the Galaxy.

I'm going to more carefully read through your character generation guidelines and get a submission up sometime tomorrow.

Thanks! Flattery will get you... um.. a .. Ferrari!! Ya! That's it!!! A Ferrari to use in game, on Athas. It'll be a convertible with leather seats in the sandy desert. Pavement, gasoline, and freon don't exist there... but y'know.. you have the car!

Still chugging along with my smuggler/dune trader should have him done by the end of the weekend. I did a little searching and came across this quote that captures how I see the PC and using as inspiration.

“I’ve crossed the Tablelands, survived the Ivory Triangle, slipped away from Hamanu’s half giant thugs, and sold sand to a tarek. I’ve fought bloodthirsty raiders, greedy slavers, and hordes of inhuman savages that overrun the wastelands. I’ve seen it all, and there isn’t much left that can surprise me.”– Anonymous Dune Trader

That's kind of a cool quote.

BTW, to all. I'm pretty sure I've updated the character submissions document at the top of the page. So, if you are so inclined, please take a gander at the current subs and make sure that it's accurate.

I ended up following the animal train of thought a bit further. Given the number of martial submissions, I have a druid concept in the works instead. Still a slave in the pits.

Looks like the slippery elf swashbuckler Ra'Shaja al'Hazred used some panache on ya an evaded your glance.

I corrected that!

Is this druid option available?

That works really well. sure.

For my trait, does this work?

Blood of the Ancient Halflings: Long ago, the halflings ruled over this land. Although you are many, many generations removed, their blood still runs in your veins. Perhaps you will find some evidence of this in the tombs of Urik's necropolis. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Will saves. You also gain a +1 trait bonus on Knowledge (nobility) checks and that skill is always a class skill for you. In addition, you may choose what language? as one of your bonus languages.

Interestingly, this adaptation could work for any race since halflings are the progenitors of all humanoids.

Doomed Hero here with my submission.

Bug is an adaptation of my original concept, but with a Thri-Kreen instead of a Halfling.

My take on the Thri-Kreen has always been that they are only barely civilized by humanoid standards. Their minds work so differently that they are practically alien to other humanoid races. Softskin races don't make a lot of sense to them. The main thing that allows them to fit into a broader multi-racial society is their hive/pack instincts.

Bug takes those ideas to the farthest extreme I can imagine while still making her able to function in the story.

She's a slave that doesn't understand the concept of slavery.
She's a thief who doesn't grasp the concept of ownership or property rights.
She's a killer who doesn't understand the concept of murder.

She isn't stupid. her upbringing and life experience just never taught her any of these things. She's also just a bit crazy.

Her current background has her kept as the pet of Prince Ninshabur, but it could just as easily be changed to anyone else. Even a PC.

Mechanically, she's a classic rogue. Sneaky. Stabby. Lock-breaky.
She differs a bit in that she has zero social skills to speak of. She barely understands non-insect languages. She's also a weapons savant. Anything she picks up she can use to kill someone. Eventually she'll multiclass into Slayer for a couple levels to give her a little more martial oomph.

As a player, I'm a vet of these boards. I play for the story and for deep immersion. I like pushing things forward as quickly as possible during exploration and taking my time with roleplay. I'm easy going, Im a very reliable poster, I write well and I try to make it a point to either engage another player or push the story forward with every post.

I've been gaming long enough that I still have my original Dark Sun boxed set and a copy of the Complete Gladiator's Handbook inside. Athas has some serious nostalgic value to me, so I'm really hoping I get into this game.

On a more personal note, THANK YOU for ignoring Prism Pentad. The original box set is where the setting is best. I can't stand what the novels and later editions did to it.

It was sheer chance that she was found by the traveling cadre of softskins as they were returning from inspecting a nearby hive where their workers pulled salt from the earth. K'ki was too weak to resist them, did not speak their tongue or understand their strange body language. All she knew was that the leader of this softskin clutch fed her and gave her water and clasped a ring around her neck like the other members of his clutch. He accepted her. It was a kindness she had never known.

This is the coolest thing ever.
