Anthropomorphic Lemming Levels? What are those?

Roland and Ingra: New Map

Seeing no obvious latch, maybe the door will push open? Roland keeps his gun ready and shoulders the door. It appears to resist but then moves a tiny bit forward and slides down revealing another empty room with a door directly across. When the door 'bottoms out' in the slot it makes a fairly loud crashing sound. You see no way to lift it back in to place.

There are two handles on the new door possibly indicating that this door needs to be pulled. A quick examination confirms a slot in the floor below the door. You think that if the door is pulled toward you it will slide down just like the door that you just passed. Of course this also means that there will be no way to close it....

And the other door did make a rather loud crashing sound.

Seeing Phari's feet slide across the floor as he tries to push the door, Rafael cracks his hands and neck. Saying a quick prayer, he braces himself against the door, takes a few quick shallow breaths, and heaves himself into it.

Roland eyes the door and the slot, then decides to pull it toward him and allow it to slide down out of the way. "Stand ready." He grunts to Ingra as he does exactly that, his pistol in the other hand...

Rafael & Pharithilis: Rafael readies himself, says a prayer, and pushes against the door. He's not sure but it didn't seem to move at all.
If you are planning to struggle with it for a while (Take 20) let me know.

******************************************
Roland and Ingra: Roland sets his lantern down, (or hands it to Ingra?) tells his dwarven companion to 'Stand ready', then grasps one of the handles on the door and pulls.

Nothing happens.
Ingra notices that the door did move a tiny bit, however, it seems like maybe it rotated just a bit.... making you think that maybe both handles need to be pulled, hard!

Setting the lantern on the floor, Roland finds that the door doesn't budge. Or did it? Ingra points out that she saw it move just a bit, and that maybe it needs to be rotated - a task that will require two hands. Frowning, the gunslinger holsters his pistol and does exactly that...

Rafael bounces off the door and shoots a shrug and a half smirk down at Phari. "Guess I didn't fare any better. How about we take a moment and work this out?"

Rafael is OK with taking 20 to get the door open.

Roland and Ingra: New map

Roland holsters his weapon and sets the lantern down. Grasping both handles he tries to rotate the door. At first he doesn't notice any movement. Then as he tugs back and forth the door moves slightly toward him, and drops into the floor with another loud crash. Ahead he sees an empty hallway.

**********************
Rafael and Pharithstilis both struggle with the door, pushing at it, shouldering it and kicking it. Eventually they notice a slight movement, then another and the door swings open.

While they may have wished to see their previous companions, what the pair do see is an empty hallway.
Map updated. You may need to refresh your browser window (F5) to see the updated picture. I don't have your pictures on it. You are in the Northeast corner of the room with the little square in it.

Picking up the lantern in one hand and drawing his pistol again with his other, the gunslinger allows Ingra to lead the way, if the dwarf is so inclined. If not, he'll do so himself. He'll check to see if the door is unlocked, and if it is he'll suggest that Ingra open it up. If it's locked, he'll advise they leave it and continue to explore the open hallways.

"Ugh... I think I'm gonna die of boredom in this place," moans Pharithstilis. Coming from anyone else, this might be a throwaway statement, but coming from a gnome, it is quite serious.

Rafael chuckles at the gnome's exasperation. "That sarcophagus room could be a break from the boredom. How about we check out this hallway, and if there's nothing there, we, against my better judgement, try out the creepy room possibly full of dead people?"

If Phari agrees, Rafael makes his way down the hall in front of them, crossbow in hand.

That sounds like a good idea to Ingra. She does not mind taking the lead, also looking for imperfections in the walls and floor as we go along.

Pharithstilis nods his agreement up to Rafael and follows along, dragging his bare feet a bit, "Lemme guess, another door, then another room with more doors, each leading to more doors... what's the deal with all these doors anyways if they don't lead anywhere... and where is everybody?"

Rafael sighs dejectedly as he and Phari make their way down the hallway. "Something tells me it's going to be a while until we get out of here." He raises his eyes up toward the ceiling. "Desna, this is not the kinda of exciting adventure I wanted from you," he says in a hushed toned, quietly laughing at the situation.

Roland & Ingra: Map update

Moving down the hallway you find a strong metal door. Examining it you see that it is locked. Checking the lock (using perception since neither of you has rogue training) you are fairly certain that the lock is trapped. You aren't sure what it would do.

Moving farther down the corridor Ingra finds a pit trap on the floor. (The letter T on the map) It spans the hallway and is at least 10' across, making it very difficult to bypass. Checking the rest of the hallway for hidden doors you find nothing.

********************************************
Rafael and Pharithstilis
You reach the turn before the doorway on the map and find three bodies hanging from the ceiling. They look like they were human. They have been hanging for long enough that the stench of rotting flesh is mostly gone. You see nothing of interest or value on them.

Continuing to the door you search. It is a wooden door with no latch or lock on it. It appears that it should slide to the left to open, but it is stuck. (DC18 strength check to open. Position makes it impossible for assistance but a lever might help. Possibility of breaking the lever applies.)

You no sounds from the door.

Male Human Cleric 1 | 8/8 | AC 15 T 12 FF 13 | CMD 11 CMB -1 | F +2 R +2 W +5 | Init. +4 | Perc. +3 | Door Sight 1/6 Bit of Luck 6/6 Channel Energy 1d6 4/6

Rafael slowly approaches one the corpses, recalling the training he received from his parents. "I guess this answers your question of where everyone is," he says, half turning back to Phari, his eyes not averting from the cropses. Looking closer, Rafael says a prayer to Desna and inspects the corpse, trying to determine how it died.

Phari almost instantly regrets his whining when the corpses come into view. He steps back and stays respectfully quiet as the cleric does his thing.

At the door, the gnome rifles through his pack looking for something that might help get some leverage, then remembers he has a dagger on him. He offers it to Raphael, "Maybe this'll help?"

Anthropomorphic Lemming Levels? What are those?

No pressure so I'm going to figure that you are taking your time examining the body. (Kind of a take 20 even though I don't think you normally can on a healing check....) After a careful examination, Rafael is fairly certain that the body was never a living creature. While it looks convincing, smells convincing, etc., it is a magically created 'decoration'.

I'll update the map tonight if the dice indicate that you got the door open without breaking Pharithstilis's dagger. Can't do it on this computer.

Male Human Cleric 1 | 8/8 | AC 15 T 12 FF 13 | CMD 11 CMB -1 | F +2 R +2 W +5 | Init. +4 | Perc. +3 | Door Sight 1/6 Bit of Luck 6/6 Channel Energy 1d6 4/6

Rafael brings his face close the body and begins examining it, the smell of decay stronger this close. However, as he continues his investigation, he begins to realize that the bodies are the same as the goblins and homunculus before. He sighs and hangs his head, both of relief and disappointment. "These aren't real. Or, they're as real as the goblins and the homunculus were." He begins to make his way to the door with Phari, pushing one of the bodies as he passes. "Who or whatever brought us here has bad taste in decoration."

He sees Phari offering his dagger, looks at the door, then back at Phari. Rafael gestures his arm out. "After you."

Oddly enough, Phari has a higher strength score than Rafael, so you can try. If you do try it, he'll cast Guidance on you.

Roland frowns. "I think we've come as far as we can. If we have no choice, I'll try to leap over the trapped section of passage. For now, let's see what lies beyond that other door we saw back there."

The gunslinger retraces their steps back to the first room, then guards Ingara as she breaks down the second door.

If I'm reading the map right, we have three choices. Through the locked (and possibly trapped door), across the trapped passage, or back to the unopened door in that first room. I'd suggest the third option.
My only question is whether any of those other passages are open or dead ends? Hard to tell if we just can't see past a certain point or if they actually terminate.

Pharithstilis gives it his best.

Strength: 1d20 ⇒ 4

He grunts, he huffs, he puffs, he tries all the things he's seen strong people do, and he tries it from all angles, but the bolt doesn't budge.

Sweating and out of breath, he has a second idea. Wiggling his fingers at the latch and making strange and exotic bird-like sounds, he tries out his Mage Hand ability.

Anthropomorphic Lemming Levels? What are those?

Roland: The passage drawn on the map where you can reach the end does end there. Since nothing is pressing I figured you would take time to search thoroughly, with the bonus for a dwarf examining worked stone. Nothing was found. You can't reach the end of the other one without getting past the trapped floor, but from the distance it is obvious that it also ends. There might be a very well hidden door there, but for now you just don't know.

Roland and Ingra return to the room where the teleport trap had deposited them and Ingra starts pounding on the heavy wooden door. It is slower work than breaking down the portcullis, but eventually the door (not made to survive that kind of abuse) does crack. Glancing through the area beyond is dark and quiet so you finish breaking through the door. (enough to squeeze through)

New Map

Through the broken door, you see.... Something that appears to be waiting, quite patiently. It might look a little, hungry? It almost fills the with of the hallway and is about 8' tall....

******************************************************
Rafael and Pharithstilis:
Rafael nods to let the little gnome risk his blade trying to pry the door open. It is surprisingly easy and causes no damage to the blade. (Rolled good) Once the door has moved enough to get fingers (or something less risky) through the door slides easily and almost quietly out of the way. (Map updated. You might have to clear your cache to see the update. F5)

The vile artwork is continued here, but only as a disgusting mural on the ceiling. The room smells terrible making you wonder if the "paint" is from body fluids. Then you notice the pile of trash filling an archway in the northeast corner. In the northwest corner is a wooden portcullis. Beyond the stinky pile of trash is a heavy, rusty iron door. You can see a keyhole and a handle. Past the portcullis you see a t-intersection of hallway.

"That's one way to do it," Rafael exclaims. He slips passed and into the room, pausing to look up at the offensive mural on display. "Well, that just reinforces my thought on the decorating here." His eyes fall on the trash. He holsters his crossbow and rolls up his sleeves, muttering to himself, "Let's see if there's anything of interest in there." He says a short prayer Phari's heard once before, then slaps his hand on his tattoo, producing two gallons of water from the air above the pile of rubbish.

I'm not actually sure how big this pile of trash is, so whatever happens happens lol.

Pharithstilis studies the frescoes on ceiling for a while. As macabre as it is, he learns a thing or two about human anatomy, and, well, at least he won’t be growing any grey hairs today.

Along with Raphael’s water treatment, Pharithstilis casts a spell of his own, if only to freshen up the stink a bit.

Casting Prestidigitation to add a hint of jasmine to the air.

Anthropomorphic Lemming Levels? What are those?

Advancing on the pile of trash Rafael adds some conjured water and Pharithstilis adds some light perfumed scent. It helps, a little. Some of the trash is old enough and desiccated enough to pretty well collapse under the water. It absorbs the water and makes a slick oily slime on the floor.

But it doesn't stink quite so much....

Again, Rafael waits for a moment as the water settles, before chuckling and shaking his head. "At the very least, I can keep us from being dehydrated, since it seems to not do anything else," he says, taking a step away from the sludge seeping from the pile. He sniffs the air, and gives a smirk to Phari. "That spell can clean me off, right? I think I remember seeing someone get mud off their cloak coming in from the rain one time." Rafael turns back to the pile. He exhales. "It's just trash. It's no worse than blood." He steps up to it, kneels down, and plunges his hands into it.

I guess it would be a Take 20 on Perception to look through the trash.

“This spell can do everything!” boasts Pharithstilis. While Raphael goes dumpster diving, Phari keeps busy making little animal figurines, amplifying the color saturation in the frescoe paints to make them even more garishly hideous, even changing the color of his own hair a few times. He’ll even help Raphael out by scanning the trash heap for magic signatures.

Rafael and Pharithstilis:
Nothing of value, or interest, it found in the slimy trash. (and no magic other than the slight residue from the created water) However....

As the pair takes time to dig through the mess they hear two things.
1: Something is moving and making faint noises behind the iron door.
2: Something is approaching from the hall/door that you came through. Whatever it is, it is not visible yet.

Rafael pulls his hands out, shaking the gunk off. "Ugh, all that for nothing." As he stands up, his attention is drawn to noise coming from behind the iron door. Before he can act, he hears another noise coming from the hallway he and Phari entered from. He quickly finishes wiping the trash off his hands on his pants and pats Phari on the shoulder. "We can finish getting cleaned up later," he whispers, grabbing his crossbow off his hip.

He moves across to the southwest corner of the room, blessing himself as he goes, and trains his crossbow at the door.

Seeing the demonic figure ahead Roland fires a shot at it, quickly re-loading as Ingra charges in. Rolands bullet strikes hard, followed by Ingra's warhammer and Ingra herself.

The demon doesn't react at all to the bullet, or the warhammer, or the impact of Ingra charging in to it. Ingra puts a hand up and examines whatever she is leaning against. It doesn't feel like a living creature. In fact, she notices that her hand penetrates about a quarter of an inch.... into an illusion. The pair was attacking a plane stone column with an illusion cast on it.

Realizing that the demon is fake and no danger the pair explore the corridor. The door straight south is a simple wooden door with no apparent latch. The other door is also a simple wooden door with a handle on it indicating that it would be pulled open. There is no visible lock on ether door.

Orc #2 goes first and charges toward Rafael.
Rafael fires his crossbow at the orc closest to him. Due to the clumsey beast's charge the quarrel slides through his hide. The orc is hurt but not down.
Pharithstilis uses his magic on the beast charging him, causing the orc stop in his tracks. Because of his charging the beast flops to the ground and skids.
Orc #5 reaches Rafael and chops deeply into the man.
Orc #3 follows Orc #2 toward Rafael.

Pharithstilis is in no immediate danger, but sees that Rafael has taken a nasty hit, with more orcs rushing towards him. The gnome positions himself behind the cluster of orcs attacking Rafael, wiggles his fingers and squawks, unleashing a cone of flashing colors.

Color Spray DC16. Trying to catch as many of orcs 2,3&5 as I can without also affecting Rafael.

Rafael recoils from the impact, briefly losing his breath as eyes go blank. He stumbles back (5-foot-step away) and shakes the cobwebs out. He focuses back on the orc, his hand deftly loading another bolt. Rafael plants his foot, steadies and braces himself, takes aim and fires back at the orc (#5?)

Moving instantly, Roland sets down the lantern and fires at the nearest orc.

Not sure of distances and such, but he needs to set the lamp down as a move action, so the most he can take is a 5' step in the direction of the battle. Feel free to adjust any of my numbers above, based on whether I can get within 20' (range) or even 30' (PB Shot) of target. Is he seeing it through a mirror? I'm unclear on that.

Anthropomorphic Lemming Levels? What are those?

Orc #3 moves faster than the rest. He steps up and attacks Rafael.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 His wild swing comes nowhere near Rafael.
Rafael fires his crossbow at the wounded orc. The quarrel grazes the creature causing minor damage. He steps back focusing on total defense.
A mirror appears in the north portion of the room and the lost party members appear, stepping through and attacking the orcs.
Roland fires at a close orc. (#2) The pistol gives a roar and a hole appears in the head of the nearest orc. He drops dead.
Ingra charges in with her warhammer ready at orc #4.
attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 Perhaps she isn't as familiar with magic transportation, but her swing is wild and throws her slightly off balance.
Pharithstilis is startled by the appearance of the others but steps up beside Roland to not catch him in his spell. A blast of colored light shines across Orc #3 and #5.
Orc #3 Will Save: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (13) - 1 = 12

Rafael dodges the orc's attack then flinches at the explosion from the gun. "Woah! Where'd you come from," he yells in as happy of a tone as he can muster. "Where'd these orcs come from, while we're at it?!" He takes another step back, loads another bolt and fires again.

"There you are!" shouts Pharithstilis excitedly, "Oh man, we've been looking all over for you guys! Do you know how many doors there are in this place!? And we found some dead bodies, but they weren't real dead bodies, but they sure smelled dead, also there were these orcs that... oh yeah!"

Pharithstilis remembers he's in the middle of combat and plunks one at Orc#4.

Quickly loading a new cartridge, Roland spins in place and fires at the orc attacking Ingra, trusting in his skill to avoid hitting the dwarf as he calls out to the gnome and the cleric in a nonchalant tone after the shattering roar as his pistol fires again. "They aren't with us. Good to see you too."

Move action to reload pistol with cartridge, ranged attack against Orc #4. Damn, I think I missed with that shot...
