Presenting Shivkah. She is a Peri-Blooded Aasimaar (who appears to be a human of Mwangi descent) oracle of the heavens with the tongues (Celestial) curse following the hierophant path. Her deity is Desna, and I took the Imagination (Luck) spell 'Minor Image' for my Trait SLA, assuming it's cool to take a subdomain spell. Mechanically, her party role is crowd control, face, buffing, and a side of healing.

Appearance:

Before you stands an exceedingly tall and thin Mwangi woman. Her black hair is held in a multitude of thin braids that fall to the small of her back. They frame a face of almost unearthly beauty, with high cheekbones and slightly tilted eyes, her irises bright gold. Her perfectly smooth, unblemished skin is the color of chocolate. A number of small gold piercings adorn her ears and nose, a small gold chain running across her left cheek between two such piercings. She wears a linen dress, deep red in color and well made in the Sargavan style. Over this she wears a grey hide (rhinocerous) jerkin, a utilitarian brown linen cloak with a hood, and a belt of the same hide as her armor. Her stout brown leather boots appear to be of Taldan make. She bears an ivory handled knife at her belt and a crossbow hangs from a strap around her torso. The crossbow appears to be new piece, made locally.

Personality:

Shivkah takes the tenets of her goddess to heart, always travelling the world and living life to its fullest. She is carefree but always willing to help those in need. Shivkah would rather talk than fight, but two things will always cause her to enter the fray: slavery and tyranny. Those under the yoke of others cannot experience all of life, and that runs counter to her faith. Shivkah tries to see the best in people and tries to be kind to everyone she meets. She makes friends quickly, but she is no pushover. She will speak her mind when others tread near to harming others, but does so as a form of mediation or friendly advice rather than judgment or condemnation.

Background:

Shivkah was born to a family in one of the Bekyar tribes of the southernmost region of the Mwangi Expanse. Her childhood was one of chores and survival, as her tribe lived deep in the jungles further south than even Sargava. While her strangely light eyes were viewed with suspicion by her tribe's elders, she was left unmolested until her curse came upon her at the age of 18. A neighboring tribe raided her village, and as the fighting got near, Shivkah began speaking in tongues. The villagers around her were terrified, and after the battle, she was exiled from the village. Scared and alone, with only an ivory handled knife and the dress on her back, Shivkah tried to survive in the jungle. One night, Desna came to her in a dream. The goddess explained to the young woman that her blood was divine and that she had the power of the heavens coursing through her. At the end of the dream, Desna beckoned Shivkah to travel north to one of the godess's temples in Sargava. The oracle heeded Desna's advice and crossed the jungle into Sargava, found the temple in Eleder, and was taken in by Desna's clergy.

Shivkah spent around a year at the temple developing her growing powers. Eventually, she left to travel the world and experience all she could, carrying a silver holy symbol the priests gave her as a gift. Her first voyage was a pilgrimage to the renowned Swallowtail Festival in Sandpoint, Varisia. After an enjoyable, uneventful festival, Shivkah walked the Varisian Caravan paths to Magnimar, Riddleport, and Korvosa. After a trip to Kaer Maga, she moved on to Cheliax, then Andoran, and Taldor. Her next long stop was at the City at the Center of the World, Absolom. She spent half a year exploring Aroden's masterpiece, before moving on. Her most recent trip was a river voyage from Cassomir, up the entire length of the Sellen River to Lake of Mists and Veils, eventually landing at Egede in Mendev. From there, Shivkah traveled to Nerosyan, and after a few days there to Kenabres, where she arrived just days ago. Who knows what awaits her here at the edge of the Worldwound.

Paige Sentine:

The holy symbol flask is fine as long as you pay for the upgrade.

Yeah, paying for the upgrade was the intention.

Alright, wrote a little backstory. It's nothing special but it should suffice.

I'm only in 1 other game right now which is under my alias Ransaq. Feel free to browse his posts for writing sample if you wish.

I work from home and only part time so I can post frequently:)

Background Part 2: Out of The Frying Pan And Into The Fire
Ferick would never see his family again. While he overcame great obstacles, he was riddled with mental and physical scars. He was not even close to adulthood yet, but the situation called for him to be more mature. Darenten Thorn took him under his wing and introduced him to 3 Rangers: Zarn, Tomund, and Lany. They were all fervent and devoted worshipers of Sarenrae. The group accepted him with open arms, despite anything that could render him excluded. Ferick was ready to believe anything at this point. Even an ideal that was impossible or unrealistic would fit well in his mind. He needed some sort of escapism from the evils of slavery. He learned of the god of Sarenrae from Darenten Thorn. It was hard to believe at first that evil could be redeemed, but that sparked his curosity to learn more. Darenten Thorn let him borrow his holy text. Ferick was delighted that finally he could read something, his mother's efforts bore fruit.

He soon prayed alongside them bearing the codes and tenants of Sarenrae. Rules that were more fulfilling compared to the rules from the Renaulds. Darenten Thorn was well built man, a hero in Ferick's eyes. Darenten taught him how to wield a blade. When they started Darenten told him these words: "I have to be frank with you Ferick. After teach I you the basics, you are going to have develop your own style given your size. But... I have no doubt that you will become a great warrior. You might have the best perspective in the world. If the time comes when you have to cut a man down, you will cut him down to your size." Ferick would spar daily with his companions. He finally had some friends, he grew more sociable and confident.

A person might call Ferick's journey a bitter beginning to a better end, but the bitterness of life would return in so much worse of a way.

Darenten's journey had a purpose that Ferick did not know about. They were tracking a horrible demon named Oxcross across the land. When they heard of recent sighting of this notorious demon, they finally told Ferick. "The Renaulds were indeed cruel to you Ferick, but demons are much worse. That is why we are after this demon. Sarenrae has a different mission for you then maybe you intended. We must solve each problem one at a time. This is the first of our problems."

They finally tracked the creature down in a jungle. They were informed that he had some kind of lair in a cave. Unfortunately for Ferick, they were now the group being hunted down. They were not hunters anymore. instead they were prey. Lany was on watch and let out a scream as he disappeared in the night. No doubt he was taken by the Demon. In the morning, they found his body hanging on a spear with a note written in his blood.

"I was actually merciful to your friend here, if you continue to pester me, I will not be so merciful. If you want to indulge my cravings then please continue."

Despite the warning they continued towards the cave. The demon then attacked during the day rather then the night. They expected another night attack and were caught by surprise. Oxcross managed to grab Ferick and take him away. Ferick was horrifyed for he knew he would suffer a fate worse then death. Oxcross's lair was covered in skeleton's and other unidentifiable remains. Ferick was restrained by chains once more.

"I told them I would not be merciful." Oxcross bites into his shoulder. The pain erupts in Ferick as he screams in pain. " I do not want to kill you, oh no, not yet. Look like you have endured alot with scars like those." Oxcross inspects his body. "Endurance is key here my friend." He stabs a dagger into Ferick's hand. Ferick screams and yells, "You sick bastard." Oxcross gives a sadistic laugh. "You humor me well." He continues to laugh and stabs Ferick's other hand with a dagger.

"ARGHHHHH, you bastard!!!"

To be quickly continued very soon.

Background-A Bitter Beginning:

Ferick was born to slave halfling parents in Cheliax. He was owned by a powerful noble family known as the Renaulds. The Renaulds were a fearsome family who owned their property with a iron fist. Many halflings were brutally murdered just so they can show their intimidation. They were rich enough to replace their losses, but the halfling were an important part of Renauld's workforce. If the halfling truly rebelled the Renauld's would lose their economic growth in Cheliax society. Some of the Renaulds acted out of fear and some acted out of pure cruelty. Clearly the institution of slavery brought out evil in their masters.

Ferick's mother, Alena, was lucky enough to be able to learn to read. She secretly taught Ferick how to read in common and halfling. Unfortunately for Ferick, there was not much education he could get. For the Renaulds did not want their slaves to be educated. His father, Tilian, was known as the fool in the circles of the Renaulds. He was whipped so many times for disobedience, but he was no fool. Tilian had a strong will and the greatest words that Ferick ever heard besides the words from his mom. "Orders are worth following, young one, know the rules so you can break them properly." Ferick made the best out of the cruelty.

When a young Renauld boy stuck a page in his face to make fun of his lack of reading, he read the page outloud to spite the Renauld boy. Terrible consequences came afterward as his father was flayed alive right before his eyes. Tillian's last words to Ferick are imprinted in his mind, "Find better rules to follow... my son. You deserve so much more than this."

The horror did not stop. Ferick was labeled as the new fool by the Renaulds. He was the representation of his father's misdeeds. They whipped him, worked him, and tried to break his spirit. The gauntlet was thrown down, but Ferick grew out of misery as a strong human being. He long endured the torment as a way to remember his father. His mother snapped at him for this, but in way even she understood. Alena knew that if Ferick followed the same path as his father, He would be in a early grave.

To save her son, Alena brought her son to local tavern. There she found a Human Cleric of Sarenrae named Darenten Thorn. After much pleading Darenten took Ferick away to save his life. Alena knew that she soon was going to suffer same fate as Tillian, at least Ferick will never see her flayed alive.

"ARGHHHHH, you bastard!!!"

Background-A Hero Has Arisen:
It has been two weeks of torture for Ferick at the hands of Oxcross. His flesh is ripe with new wounds. However, Oxcross has kept him alive, but only for the purpose of torturing him more. Ferick is fed very little. He is shocked that he has returned to chains. Something he has very much tried to avoid at this point.

This day was unlike the previous days... Oxcross departed for a brief amount of time. The minutes felt like hours for Ferick as he is on the ground blindfolded with no knowledge of what is going to happen next. Soon, He hears hear Oxcross walk into the cave with another unidentified person. "I have brought a guest, a friend of yours I would presume."

Ferick hears the chain clasp on the person and a splash of water for the person to rouse from something. "Whats going on I can't see anything." Ferick realizes it is his friend Zarn. "Zarn! Don't worry it's going to be alright."

"Ferick is that you? I though you were dead? Arghhh!" Ferick hears the stabbing of flesh.

Oxcross says with delight. "I will be even more merciful! Now only one of you will it make it out of this place. But you must tell your other friend to die."

Zarn and Ferick have never really seen Oxcross or what his lair looks like, but they infer as much as they can from their other senses. Zarn gets rather sick after a week or so of torture.
Zarn speaks, " I am sorry my friend, you deserve to die. I do not! I do not!"

"Excellent! Excellent! See how your friend clearly betrayed you. I will let him go now."

Zarn and Ferick hear the sharpening of a blade. Zarn screams, "What!"

"My promise was a promise. You will not make it out alive though. This is me being merciful. One last feeling of pain for you."

Ferick hears a blade stab right through Zarn's chest. He hears him drop to the floor dead.

Ferick speaks with tears in his eyes, "Kill me."

"What did I just hear?"

Ferick says again, "Kill me."

"Louder!"

"I have been in chains for long enough. I was born a slave, my dad flayed alive right before my eyes. Truly, you are chaining me, returning me to where I have been before. But what you don't realize is that my masters were chaining themselves as you are with yourself. You do your worst, but I will tell you that there is something much better out there."

For a moment things get quite, Ferick hears Oxcross dragging the body of his friend Zarn away out of the lair. Strangely, a week passes without Oxcross returning. Ferick's wounds have been deeply infected and he his dying of hunger and thirst. He hears Oxcross return after so long. Ferick feels a brush of Oxcross's hand on his face.

Oxcross screams, "Curtains for you!" Ferick feels the sharp blade into his stomach.

Ferick blacks out.

Traits and Drawback:

Racial Traits:

Low Blow: Some halflings train extensively in the art of attacking larger creatures. Halflings with this racial trait gain a +1 bonus on critical confirmation rolls against opponents larger than themselves. This racial trait replaces keen senses.

Fleet of Foot: Some halflings are quicker than their kin but less cautious. Halflings with this racial trait move at normal speed and have a base speed of 30 feet. This racial trait replaces slow speed and sure-footed.

Weapon Familiarity: Halflings are proficient with slings and treat any weapon with the word “halfling” in its name as a martial weapon.

Halfling Luck: Halflings receive a +1 racial bonus on all saving throws.

Fearless: Halflings receive a +2 racial bonus on all saving throws against fear. This bonus stacks with the bonus granted by halfling luck.

Campaign Trait:

Exposed to Awfulness: Once per day when you fail a saving throw against an effect created by a demon that would kill or physically incapacitate you, you can immediately reroll that saving throw as a free action. You must take the second result, even if it is worse. Associated Mythic Path: Guardian.

Faith Trait:

Honest:You gain a +1 trait bonus on Diplomacy checks. This bonus increases to +2 when the Diplomacy check is made to influence those who are already friendly or helpful toward you.

Religion Trait:

Patient Optimist: You gain a +2 trait bonus on Diplomacy checks to influence hostile or unfriendly creatures, and if you fail at such an attempt, you may retry it once.

Drawback:

Attached (Amaymon Filia): Whenever the object of your attachment is either threatened, in danger, or in someone else’s possession, you take a –1 penalty on Will saves and a –2 penalty on saves against fear effects. If the person or object to which you’re attached is ever lost, killed, or destroyed, exchange this drawback for the Doubt drawback.

Character Advancement:
1 Unbreakable Fighter Level, the rest Paladin Levels, and Mythic Guardian path.

I believe It was a good recruitment this time around, got alot of interesting characters that would be nice to RP with so at the very least they are well crafted and living if anything. All I can say is Whoever gets in they make it a fun adventure and one to remember. Though it may simply be RP and a game, It will be a fond memory you look back on and tell younger generations of. Hopefully it's until the very end of the AP. And even then perhaps it will be open enough that the Legend continues with stories and ideas that can branch off and keep the story going.

If I get in I'm just going to do everything in my power to not become too Chaotic, and try to move towards Chaotic Good or Neutral Neutral. Evil is on the menu, but at the same time that only happens if Maxwell gets pushed too far into grief.

Spoiler - For real:

That is a real possibility. I will certainly make the attempt.

I present Sqyz'l Silverscale, kobold oracle of flame, devotee of Apsu, tribal outcast and errant adventurer.

Background:
Sqyz'l has been an aberration and misfit his entire life. Born with black, silver-edged scales and an instinctive morality, he was often ostracized and ridiculed. The only thing that kept his kobold parents and kin from strangling him as a baby were his eyes, which ebbed and flared like glowing embers. The tribal elders declared Sqyz'l (correctly) a divine prodigy, declaring it ill-luck to kill him. But that did not ease his upbringing.

Through his divine connection to Apsu, Sqyz'l quickly developed an aptitude for magic and an affinity for fire. His fiery eyes only gained in intensity as he grew olde. The other kobolds of his tribe respected his powers, but feared him in equal measure. He also began to espouse virtues of respect, law and generosity, which were not well received by his kin, and further divided him from the tribe. Considered an embarrassment by family, and shunned by other tribe mates, Sqyz'l had no friends and more than a few foes. As soon as he was able, Sqyz'l left.

Born with a strange birthmark, Sqyz'l learned that it resembled the sigil of the Runewardens. Driven by curiosity and a strong desire for companionship, he headed north towards the Worldwound.

Sqyz'l is slightly smaller than the average kobold, but his markings and color are distinctive. He is predominantly black, but the outer edge of his scales are tinged in gleaming silver, which reflect brightly in the sun and seem to catch the glow of any nearby fires. His eyes glow with an inner flame, giving him a menacing appearance while also severely limiting his vision.

In just before the cut!! =D Big picture plan is oracle/sorcerer -> mystic theurge.

Lol, yeah! I got home late and was scrambling to get the build together... I was going to flesh out the background a bit more, but had to stop and post! =P

Same here, can't believe I messed up my last post though. I posted it then ran to work, unfortunately now it's too late to change it.

Man I hope I get in. I've got some cool plans for this character. I pretty much thought him up specifically for WotR and I been itching to get him into a game. There's a lot of entries though so we will just have to wait and see. Good luck to everyone

While my application is complete, want to point out that I am still very much interested. Eager to have a chance to take part in an group, based on some of the role play in the discussion!

Please make sure to check out my other stuff. I play in Leinthan's Second Darkness campaign as a Zen archer Monk who essentially has a imaginary freind that taught him to be a monk. Exploring themes of what really mental illness means. Also, I play a Female Samsaran Oracle bard chef that is in a Jade Regent campaign. She is out to make the perfect 5 course meal including dessert. That character is exploring themes of perfection.

We got a bit too ambitious with the backstory, so we will not complete it on time. The twist is that Amaymon Filia is Oxcross. Ferick does not know that though. What ties them together is how dark their pasts are. Maybe their love for each other is the only way to come to terms with their horrific pasts. Ferick's goal during the campaign is going to be redeeming his wife as well as all the obstacles the adventure has to offer.

I wanted to take a risk with this character. Our characters, Ferick and Amaymon are tied together. They both have to make the cut in order to make the chemistry and concept work

I thought the whole married aspect would bring a whole different element to themes of what love really means. There are many ways it could go. Honestly, this the darkest character I have made so far. But, I wanted a lighter tone as well. A little honey moon adventure!

There are alot of great characters. Everyone pat yourself's on the back. I am excited to hear the results whatever they be.

Oh god. If maxwell and the married couple makes it, he's going to have a hay-day trying to keep his s$## together. I can see him getting absolutely furious at the two of you for flirting in certain situations. It'll be ridiculous at one point, if I had to guess :)

Definitely still interested.

Well, lots of good characters and good luck to all. I already had to replace a character already in my Mummy's Mask campaign, so I recommend you consider posting history. Taking people without it can be risky as I found out.

Excited about the first AP to have mythic involved!!

Out of curiosity, Fomiel, how do you expect people to build /up/ a posting history if they're not accepted into games without any? Random chatter on the discussion boards?

There's a bit of a chicken-and-egg problem with that approach, and I've seen it in too many MMO 'endgames' to be comfortable with it.

No posting history should rank above a bad posting history.

I have accepted 10 new players with enthusiasm and 8 lost interest after less than a month and dropped.

The 2 turned out to be solid players. I know it is anecdotal evidence, but I try to leave one slot for a new player and expand the party a little more (5 for an AP). With my 4 member mummy's masks groups, I couldn't afford to.

I actually believe No history at all is dangerous compared to a bad one. You can't read everyone's stuff, and I tend to avoid taking people into games that are in like 8+ AP's at once. I'm running one and playing 2 at the moment, but it's not difficult to manage, save for the homebrew beta ap that I'm working tirelessly on.

That said, if we're looking at character history, don't just look at the roleplaying boards. If someone is an active member of the forums that likes to give solid advice, or joke around, they're probably a good option for a player.

Background checking is time consuming, however, so overall enthusiasm should be measured against a feather in discussion threads, honestly. If people cop out, that's fine, they can be replaced, and that cycle tends to continue until there's atleast 4 sensible people, or 5. It happens in almost every campaign and is kind of a right of passage for a good AP.

Game starts > Unenthusiastic people leave > Recruit more > Lose 1 or 2 this time > Recruit again > Full Enthusiasm levels reached > Constant posting.

If we're all whipping them out and measuring, however, I've been in a Legacy of fire campaign for a complete year... though I don't like the idea of everyone saying "I've been in blarg for blarg" because then it just makes the pressure of the DM's decision that much harder.

I think he should just take us at face value and sculpt the campaign using the people he chooses. Having a bunch of "I wanna kill demons!" types would be fun for the occasional damage crunch type of GM, but then you've got the ones that like to have the "But why" people. Even better is the one that has both, along with other types. Variety is key, hence the reason I'm not playing a Good, or Lawful character.

It shouldn't be sunshine and Iomedae's glory at the worldwound, to me. It should be bitter and sad and depressing, and everyone should be wearing happiness masks because abaddon is in your back door...

Generally speaking, if this "Festival" doesn't end horribly in the next 15 minutes I'm gonna be surprised.

That all said, Caleb Derekson you just tripped like 14 of Maxwell's switches.

^ Whadya mean by "tripped"? I don't know what's happening but I'm already anxious!

Gotta go head out to my IRL festival for my hometown's birthday! Let's hope that demons don't actually come to ruin the fun! XD

If I had to sum up Maxwell, I'd say that he's far more serious than your average hopeful paladin, if only because his hatred runs extremely deep when it comes to fiends. He doesn't trust Tieflings, and he hasn't been able to be even remotely happy as the worldwound still exists.

He's a bit of a negative nancy, but at the same time he's occasionally a voice of reason that doesn't let anyone forget what they're there for.

Here is Fomiel's theme song. I saw these guys in Atlanta last week and they were awesome. Better than Modest Mouse live.

Fomiel is still 'Holding on to His Heart' despite the things he has been through.

And Maxwell, you make some great points. A diverse group with good interaction helps carry the story.

A certain degree on in-character difference can be very good for a campaign. Wrath of the Righteous will test the moral fiber of the characters as well as their martial proficiency. A certain level of conflict over the right solution to certain problems may be very interesting.

I agree with everything you are saying except for this.

I don't think avoiding the Lawful good alignment is the problem. Any alignment can lack variety. Evil characters that are just evil for evil's sake are pretty redundant.

A neutral alignment could be like the Ents in Lord Of The Rings. That is the classic true neutral alignment.

Being a alignment does not equate logically or creatively to me as lacking variety. Alignment is so broad in scope that so many different types of characters can fit into each alignment., I do not think that the alignment mechanic works as complete criterion for determining morality .

Philosophers have been working on that for a long time.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Insightful stuff!

Unless your determining your character's alignment first, then making your character's story. I could see some difficulty in that for any alignment. I do it the other way around usually.

Interparty relations and conflict are some of the most interesting ways RPGs work like nothingelse.

Maxwell, I have to kind of take issue with your implication that just because a Paladin has faith in his or her deity, the basic rightness of their cause and the conviction that good will ultimately triumph, they somehow aren't capable of taking things "seriously".

I also suspect you're confusing "serious" and "grimdark", and I hope that's your character speaking rather than you-the-player.

Oh no, he dislikes paladins is all. I agree that Paladin's certainly take things seriously. Maxwell generally distrusts anyone who isn't a pessimist like himself, though, but will probably warm up to the group if he gets in.

I do love me some grimdark though...

Very true, if everybody is just hmhm, hmhm, hmhm, it'd be dull.

And then everyone played Kenny.

That sounds like it would leave a mess. :P

What people are describing however is just party Dynamics, Regardless of Alignment every character has their own personality.. BUT the thing is that similar or the Same alignment does not necessarily mean you agree or heck that you will not Argue.. Imagine a Party of NOTHING but paladins of different Gods.. the strife would be more than a demon could shake a stick at. On the Post issue.. people have to get experience somehow I WILL however say that when it comes to games, if you are newish, THIS would not be the best campaign to test the waters in as a player as it is fairly new and most likely assumes there is knowledge of the previous books as well. Either way I'm going to have much Fun as Verim he is playful yet stern on a few topics, The main thing being he just couldn't be a paladin, but he'd never ridicule those who are.. it is a tough road. Paladins are made, not born, and they exist due to no fluke.
