In ages past the forces of Mitra let by the Paladin Markadian marched his armies to battle against the foul Asmodians and their champion King Jaraad of Barca. It seemed that Goodness would once again defeat a great evil and bring prosperity to the land. Such was not to be for with an act of dishonor Markadian was slain and his armies fell in battle. Since then Talingarde has lived under the iron grip of the Barcan regime and the church of Asmodeus. Now the forces of light must rise again and this time bring an end to the evil that rules Talingarde. To save Talongarde, great heroes must be born. Will you be among them?

After the guard leaves again, Sedelion turns to Randu.

"I would be lying if I said I wasn't suspicious of anyone wearing the regalia you described, but as our... non human friend said earlier," here the elf nods to Libris, "I think dying while trying taking a few of these lads with us might be preferable to just facing the joy that is to come anyway, trap or no. Did she say what was in this bag of tricks? That might help us determine our best route out of here."

"Desna willing our 'benefactor' thought to include lockpicks at least."

Ash listens quietly as the cleric of mitra shares his tale. A look combining intrigue and doubt begins to form on his face. Hearing of the bag holding some potentially useful tools, he starts to ponder what may be within.

"Indeed, but let's wait until the guards make their next rounds, then perhaps you reach within that bag and see what you can find. Could be useful to see what we are working with..."

"Light or dark won't matter much to the frequency of their watch I don't think, though we might wait until dark to try and leave. I agree with his suggestion though, we should wait until we know they have come and gone to see what is in your bag."

The elf thinks for a moment before continuing.

"I am not a particularly strong swimmer, but if we can find something that floats it might be easier than trying the front gate. Though of course we will need something to help me with these locks first."

Sedelion smiles as he says that.

Assuming there is something to aid in picking locks in Randu's bag, is there enough wiggle room for me to pick my locks, or will I have to hope to be unlocked from my shackles by the guards first?

Sedelion listens the half-orc and nods when he is finished.

"Very true. Also that should mean there are a few sets of uniforms, armor pieces, and weapons unattended by their sleeping owners. With some luck, and skill, we might be able to fool some of the guards that are awake into thinking we are just some of their fellows." The elf pauses and winces. "Well, provided they don't look too close. Remind me later, should we actually get out of here, to tell you of the time I almost got caught trying to lead a group of slaves disguised as members of the local fire brigade."

Sedelion almost smiles at the memory.

Shadow Lodge

Opening up the bag of holding you find the following items:

3 Daggers (in scabbards so they don't cut the bag)
1 Bottle of oil
Bullseye Lantern (It is currently filled)
Hempen Rope (50 Feet coil)
Pouch with a mix of spell components
Sack with 6 sets of common clothing
A window with a note attached to it
2 Potions of Cure Light Wounds
100 Gold Piece in a pouch
7 Food Rations
1 Waterskin with water inside
Holy Symbol of Mitra (Silver and Saffire)
A crystal orb with another note attached
A set of masterwork thieves tools

The notes are as follows:

The one on the window says, Place this against a wall and it shall create a window you can pass through the wall with. It can work only once and cannot be removed when used so use it wisely.

The other note says, This orb when broken will temporary usurp control of a teleportation circle. This will not function unless the owner of the circle gives up control or is deceased.

The thief tools can be used when chained up but at a -2 penalty due to restricted movement.

"Well, whomever this lady was really, she certainly didn't skimp on the keys to our freedom. Those are well made... should make up for the awkward angle I am having to work at to get myself down. As for the symbol, I would say that it was probably meant for you, good sir."

The elf slants his head while he thinks a moment.

"The half-orc is right... this stuff probably is intended to best help us get to the warden and using his gateway... but if that fails then we are in for a massive fight to get out some other way..."

He shakes his head.

"We need more information. The portal seems like the best option, but if the warden isn't easily reached... or worse, isn't here at the moment... then we will have blown our advantages only got get further into the prison, instead of getting out of it. I will grant that what we have doesn't lend itself to a frontal assault of the gates, but I think we could use it to make a hole in the wall somewhere and try our chances with the waters."

Sedelion looks around the room.

"I can get us down when we need to, but I think we should stay put a little longer to learn anything else we can. Maybe get one of the guards slip up with a crucial detail... or better yet, take us somewhere far enough away that we can get a better look at our path from here."

Heh, watch that be my best roll of the game... from here I only get ones and twos. Still, given we get something special for natural 20s, I hope I learn something awesome from it.

Shadow Lodge

Indeed, for a natural 20 you get a +5 bonus to the result of the roll making it a 32

While most of you hear only muffled talking Sedelion is able to tune in with his keen senses to the conversations.

Jacob: Hey Dylan, don't ya think the prison has less guards than it should. Looks to me its got space for a lot more folks.

Dylan: Don't complain Jacob, its not like prisoners got even a vague shot of breaking out. Besides gives us real guards more stretching room in this place.

Jacob: Yea, you got that right Dylan. Besides, its not like anyone's got a shot of breaking out of this place. The Marked in there are pathetic wrenches, chained and locked away like birds in a cage. Even if they were to get out of those chains, they got one route to go and we've got swords, bows and armor, they wouldn't stand a chance against us.

Dylan: Dam straight, no one's ever broken out of here and no one will. Less guards means more profit for us right Jacob?

Jacob: Yea, speaking of which, Sergeant Tomas Blackary is running the gambling table tonight, you going to be there Dylan?

Dylan: Sorry pal, but I've got wall duty this evening. Drew the short end of the stick for breaks it looks like.

Jacob: Too bad, that's where the real money is made in this join. But watch it cause I swear Louis is too lucky for his own good.

Dylan: Betcha he's a slight of hand prick, still its good fun I'm missing out on. Wonder if the Warden is approving of these Gambling nights though.

Jacob: Oh him, well we don't have to worry about the Warden. Other than running some administration he spends his time up there fiddling with magical thingies. He leaves the grunt work to Blackary and the rest of us to do. Its not like there is much else to do around here with the prisoners all locked up tight.

Dylan: Must be the best job ever for him. Getting all the free time he wants up there in best room in prison and barely doing anything.

Jacob: Yea that's those prissy nobles for you, always having too much free time just cause they got money and prestige. Don't tell that to him in the face though. Those Wizards can shoot fire from their hands at a mere slight.

Dylan: Don't I know it. Seen some of those Wizards before. They may look bookish but when they start flinging spells you'ed wish you had never got on their bad side.

Jacob: Ya think some of the prisoners got magic?

Dylan: Probably, but we know how to deal with them. They cast a spell and we break their jaw and tape it shut. They need to talk to fling their spells. Besides the chains got some kind of mojo on them to keep them from casting I hear. So long as they're locked up, they won't be a problem.

Beyond that you mainly hear general conversation, some things about drunken exploits, family and hopes to maybe one day get a job working for the army or some other prestigious promotion.

Listens to the others as they make claims to the items in the bag. The pale skinned man adorned with strange marks calls out his interest in the pouch of magical components. Damn, we'll have to split resources. Though perhaps it will be beneficial to have a fellow caster...

"Abbo, was it? Perhaps we can stay close and share the pouch. I have some mystical abilities, though admit I was caught offguard when I was taken and thus my prepared spells are perhaps not the best for combat. Are you more skilled in such endeavors?"

Abbo, don't you have Eschew Materials?

Not freed yet unfortunately. There still needs to be a roll to pick the cuffs. You can't simply take 10 on it as there is a risk involved when picking the cuffs while currently chained up.

Sedelion is still for a while, listening to the conversations of the guards in the adjacent room. After he had heard enough, he opens his eyes and smiles.

"Well, my friends, we might have some luck on our side. The portal is definitely an option...."

In hushed tones, the elf proceeds to tell his companions everything of note that he heard from the guards.

All of you may now treat the guards conversations as IC knowledge, as I would not have held anything important back.

After letting giving his cellmates a moment to process all that he has told them, Sedelion continues.

"If we can time our escape to match their gambling game, we will probably encounter less resistance than normal. We will still need to get past whomever is left guarding us without giving him a chance to raise the alarm though... perhaps it might be best to do that when he comes in to check on us?"

Bron thinks about Sedelion's words for an instant, while scratching his beard.

-Yes. We might even use the uniforms of those who come to check on us; who knows, it might give us an advantage.- He sits and prepares to wait for long. -We should rest, so as to be ready at the proper time; then we will all be in your hands, literally.- He points at Sedelion. -I guess you'll use your mojo so that we are already free and ready when the guards come in, in due time- he says while looking around.

Is there anything here big enough that can be used as an improvised weapon?

Then, suddenly, he seems to remember something. -Oh, by the way, how do we deal with our furry friend right there?

Shadow Lodge

You can use the chains as improvised weapons. Other than that the room is sparse in its fixings.

Anyhow, you wait until the end of the shift and once again two guards enter the cell block and give it a look around the area. Assuming that you're hiding the items in the bag and not causing them problems they complete the shift without issue. Unless you want to try something when the Guards are doing this patrol?

My thoughts would be that we attempt to free ourselves prior to the guard's check during the game. Unless there are some objections, going to roll on my locks with that time period being the designated time it happens.

"Well, its time I guess. Pass me the lockpicks and we will see how well I do at freeing myself from slavery for a change."

Hah. So apparantly my phone is lucky. If the latter, it will be a little bit before I can post again safely. If handwaive authorized, presume I get everyone down except the gagged NPC... want to allow discusion on what to make of him.

Second time is a charm it seems. After getting a good clue from the first attempt he is able to unlock the chain on his hand. Now with one hand free from the manacle he no longer has the -2 penalty. However until he can unlock both hands he still needs to roll. Once he has both hands free though he can take 10 to unlock everyone else without a problem.

Thank Mitra for companions who have such talents. The cleric thinks gratefully.

Shadow Lodge

Sedelion is able to unlock the second chain and his hands. However not without risking some noise.

1d20 + 0 ⇒ (5) + 0 = 5

Fortunately the guards ignore the clicking noises from the prison.

Now that Sedelion's hand are free and he has a good feel for the locks he can take 10 and unlock everyone else chains so long as he takes his time to keep the noise down.

In total it takes 20 minutes to unlock everyone (Assuming you're taking 1 minute per cuff to avoid making too much noise)

When you're all free you see that the Dog-Beast in the other cell is looking at you. He does not make any noise to give you away but seems to gesture his head to the chains.

As he finishes the last of his new companion's locks, Sedelion smiles.

"Just another day freeing slaves and the oppressed."

He looks at the muzzelled branded creature.

"Unless anyone has objections, I am for freeing that one too. No idea what it is, nor why it is here, but I doubt he is friendly toward our guard friends. Besides," the elf seems to get a bit more serious here, "I made a promise that I would free from slavery all that I could. If being in this prison isn't a form of slavery to the demon lord, I don't know what is."

Sedelion will listen to objections, if anyone has any. If not, assume that he takes a 10 on the creatures' shackles as well.

Shadow Lodge

You need to make me another lockpick check for the cell door. Its DC is beyond what you can get with a take 10. The Cell Doors are better locks than the chains.

Male Elf Ranger (Urban) 8 | AC 21 T 14 FF 17 | HP 80/80 | F +6 R +10 W +4 | Init +4 | Perc +14

So the creature is behind a door, not just chained up like the rest of us were? I remember him being gagged in addition... can we ungag him so that we can talk to him before freeing him from his cell? Going to roll a perception on his bindings.

Shadow Lodge

The creature is chained to the floor but also locked in a cell so to get to him you'ed have to unlock 2 cell doors. You can't un-muzzle him from outside the cell though as he does not have enough mobility to actually reach any of the bars or door.

Ash bends down and picks up the daggers, "Libris, Bron, Sed, Randu, who will take these to start? I am not completely useless in a fight with a blade, though I am guessing most of you would be more capable. Abbo, we still going to share those components?"

Given taking a 10 wouldn't work, going to assume that failed and roll again.

Sedelion grumbles at the stubborn lock under his breath and tries again to open the cell door.
