Ahmed Kharim |
Last round of Racial Energy for the day
Bolstered by the knowledge that fire seems to be quite effective, Ahmed hurls another ball of flame at the creature. The effort seems to have taken a lot out of him, and only seconds after the fire has left his fingers, exhaustion seeps across his face, creating lines in his skin where there weren't any before, and making his eyes look sunken and hollow.
Ranged Touch Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Fire Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5

Ahmed unleashes a torrent of flame that seems to truly hurt the Adherer. Afterwards, Kwin lands a solid slice as well. But alas it does not kill the monstrosity. A barrage of arrows from Koshukhep and Torin seem to have no effect.
Round 4
Djehuti: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Izra: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Kwin: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Djehuti fires an arrow. It lands but doesn't seem to do any damage.
Suri is up.
Rasp the Rogue |
Suri claws the beast dealing a little more damage. Enraged, the Adherer strikes her back. One of its blows strikes her in the face, purpling her jaw.

Ahmed Kharim |
Suri HP 9/21
Noticing Suri begin to diminish as she grows more wounded and exhausted, Ahmed rushes to her side, using what remains of his own fire to fuel her own.

Koshukhep |
With a snarl of sudden fury at the corpse's assault on Suri, Koshu crowded in behind Kwin, sending another arrow at the monster.
shortbow into melee: 1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (5) + 5 - 4 = 6
dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 3
In his effort not to hit Suri (or Kwin), he missed the undead entirely. Absurdly, he yelled at it, "We are not intruders! We are explorers! Leave us be! We will set you to rest!"
Djehuti |
Pedantically, Djehuti corrects Koshu even in the middle of battle. "While it resembles a mummy, Koshu, the creature is not undead. It has more in common with a creature summoned from another plane than the undead, in fact."
Kwin Longclaw |
"Don't really care," Kwin huffed as he maneuvered for another opening. "Let's just kill it!"

Really wish we were playing 5E or Savage Worlds. That banter would definitely be worth some inspiration points.
Torin is up.

Koshukhep |
"...Not a mummy? Summoned?" Koshukhep said, blinking for a moment. "Then let it die! The Old Gods do not favor it!" His bold pronunciation may have been fueled more by anger than by reason, but who could argue when the arrows were flying?
Speaking of Torin... ;)
Torin Ironbeard |
Flying arrow 1: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 1 = 8
Flying arrow 2: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 1 = 9
Torin fires another pair of arrows, but they both fly wide. He looks at his bow with disgust...
wicked_raygun |
Man, not a great round for our heroes.
Neither blade nor bow manage to pierce the flesh of the Adherer.
Round 5
Djehuti: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Kwin: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Rasp the Rogue |
Emboldened by the heat of her mate, Suri attacks the Adherer with her claws. But this time, they find purchase and rip the beast's neck to tatters. It gurgles and moans and then slides slowly down the wall - dead.
End of combat. Whew! That was a rough one. Take a moment to celebrate.

Izra Kayal |
Izra sighed, and tucked the flask of alchemical fire back into her bandolier. She looked around the room, searching for more dangers.
"Is anyone injured?" She asked.
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 3
Her search of the room was interrupted when her eyes fell on Koshu's wounds. She reached for her wand.
CLW on Koshu: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 Koshu is healed by 6hp
Kwin Longclaw |
"I'm fine. But that was one sticky situation," Kwin said as he scrubbed gooey gunk from his blade.
Koshukhep |
Koshukhep's ire abated when the monster went down, but still his tail lashed as he knelt by it to say a quick prayer to Sekhmet.
That done, he nodded his thanks to Izra and went over to Suri to satisfy himself that she was in no excessive pain. "Your fires were well-placed this day, my friends," he said to her and Ahmed respectfully. "As always! I am glad that you are not angry with me," he added with a glance at the shredded adherer.
Djehuti received a friendly slap on the back that resounded in the small chamber. "It is well that you are so wise in the ways of the dead and the summoned. You must tell me more of what you know, that I too may hunt with greater wisdom."
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 +2 if human-oriented
Djehuti |
Djehuti nods at Koshu. "I will be happy to tell you all about unnatural creatures, undead and outsider, the next time we have a few hours to spare."
Kwin Longclaw |
"I wouldn't mind sitting in on that conversation if it's okay with you two," said Kwin as he stowed his sword. "Seems like there's some pretty freaky stuff around here. The more we know, the better."

Rasp the Rogue |
The room is unfortunately devoid of any valuables. And so the Heroes descend further down the crypt, taking the southern staircase.

Now I'm not sure whether to click the spoiler or not... :P I thought the southern staircase was where we came in? Or is the map upside down? Am I just confused? What is the velocity of an unladen swallow?
At the bottom of the stairs, Koshukhep sniffed the air warily. Then he deliberately assured himself that his three marketplace charms were all hanging visibly outside his armor. "What say you, Kwin, Torin? Safe, or more tricks?" He still seemed a bit skittish, the tomb's curse weighing on his mind.
Kwin Longclaw |
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Kwin barked a quiet laugh. "You know me and traps, Kosh! I can disarm them well enough, but I'm more likely to trip over one than to spot it. Torin?"

Room B28
The air in this chamber is cool. The walls and ceilings are tiled with stone, but the floor is hard-packed earth, giving the area an unfinished quality. A long stone table rests against the western wall, flanked by two large brass urns. Two passages lead north and east out of the room.
Stonecunning would apply to this roll as well.

Ahmed Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
"Curious." Amhed voices back over towards Kwin. "This torch appears to house a switch." He cocks his head at the Kitsune. "What do you think it does?"
Kwin Longclaw |
Dang it, I keep screwing up my narrative voice; this game's just two tense.
Kwin arched one eyebrow. "A switch, you say. Interesting..." He cautiously moved over to the torch and studied it.
Disable Device (no touchy, to discern function ONLY): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19
Probably not...
Djehuti |
Djehuti peers at the brass urns from a prudent distance, taking out his notebook to sketch the room.
Any patterns or designs on the urns of religious or historical significance?
Rasp the Rogue |
Djehuti recognizes the bronze urns as the type used by priests during mummification. They are made of brass and probably weigh about 200 pounds each. But they are devoid of any symbols. In fact this room itself seems a bit unfinished.

Rasp the Rogue |
Kwin meanwhile manages to trace the mechanics of the torch switch back to the staircase.
Kwin you can read the spoiler for the staircase.

Kwin Longclaw |
"Hmm."
Kwin ponders the torch, eventually discerning the linkage Ahmed had so easily spotted. Shaking his head in resigned admiration, he pitches a vulpine ear toward the wall and raps the stone with the butt of his dagger.
Slowly he works his way around the room, tapping and listening, pausing and backtracking a few times, until he finally arrives back at the staircase.
"Huh," he says in mild surprise, rubbing his chin, then crouching down on all fours to get eye level with the lowest step, scanning his gaze across its surface. Then he stands and squints upward to the top of the stairs.
"Well," he declares, one hand cupping elbow as a finger of the other taps his chin.
"Well," he says again, thoughtfully. "This seems a bit... odd. I might be misreading it altogether. But it appears we've already tripped this trap, and it's waiting to spring. My guess is, if we try to go back up the stairs, we'll be skewered. Or at least our way will be blocked."
He turns to look at the torch, pondering. "It might be that this switch," he says, pointing, "disengages or resets the trap. I can't say for sure. It's definitely connected to it."
He looks at Ahmed. "We can work the lever and see what happens, or I can try disarming or releasing the trap directly. Preferences? Anyone? Anyone?" Bueller?

Here's an example.

"All other things being the same, I'd prefer we not be skewered." Ahmed replied grimly, looking around the room for anything else of interest.
Izra Kayal |
Wow! Miss a day, miss a lot, apparently. ;-)
Izra had been silent for most of the past few minutes. She remained so as the others joked and bantered. Their task was a serious one, but she would not begrudge them their humor. One did what one could to reduce the stress of such life-and-death matters.
Nothing really for her to do, but look around, I guess. Sorry, major headache is killing creativity.

Room B29
An earthy scent fills this large chamber. The ceiling and walls are tiled with stone, but the ground is bare earth. Stone benches are set against the east and west walls, and torch holders are mounted in the corners and on either side of a wide doorway to the west. The beginnings of several shallow, rough passages have been started along the eastern wall and in the southwest corner, but the excavations are incomplete, ending in earth and rubble after only a few feet. At the south end of the room, a short, wide flight of steps descends to a set of stone double doors.
Suddenly a waterfall of hairless feline bodies erupts from one of the unfinished corners. Their howls are unmistakably murderous, and they rush the heroes.
