Unbinding the Fetters - Disciples of Master Gond (Inactive)

Game Master Mark Sweetman

The path of those that aspired to be students is taking them to the Kingdom of the Impossible where they will engage in a tournament...

1 to 50 of 61 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

The elderly man stood unworried in the center of the stone ring. He wore only a simple monk’s robe and threadbare sandals upon his feet. Growling with intent the half-orc beat his chest and charged at the man, lashing out with a wild cestus strike as he drew near. The man effortlessly weaved out of the path of the strike, letting the half-orc’s momentum carry him forward – but gave him a lightning quick strike to the kidney as he passed. ”Bah, sloppy. No form, your rage clouds your focus.” barks the man.

Roaring in pain the half-orc lashes out again. An almost imperceptible sinuous motion brings the man inside the half-orc’s guard, which is followed up by a tripping throw – forcing the half-orc off balance and causing him to land heavily on his back. Winded the half-orc is too slow to react as the man establishes a choke hold, throttling his breath. The man holds the choke until the half-orc stops his struggle and lies still. Releasing the hold ”Rejected, come back when you have more control. Next” as he stands up and takes guard against the next applicant.

Pitch:
I am intrigued by the myriad of potential unarmed combat builds within Pathfinder currently – both within the monk umbrella and without. With that in mind, the reclusive Master Gond is looking for new applicants for his Irorian monastery. It is not monk exclusive, as I want to leave it open to all unarmed combat applicants.

The brief is that you will be admitted to the monastery and go through a series of training exercises. You will initially be competing against your fellow party members, as well as other members of the monastery. Then certain events will unfold that will unleash you upon the unsuspecting world in search of answers.

I will be selecting 4-5 characters for this PbP. My focus will be on variety, and the potential for lyrically descriptive combats. Standard expectation of roughly a post a day.

Apps will remain open at least throughout the weekend into next week with an aim to make a selection late next week.

Application Requirements:
1. Stat breakdown
2. Class and Level breakdown
3. Skills and Feats summary
4. Basic backstory
5. A descriptive example of your combat style

Character Creation:
1. Must have unarmed combat as primary focus
2. 4th Level
3. 20 point buy
4. Two traits
5. Standard wealth by level
6. Core races
7. HP max at 1st and rounded up average thereafter
8. Sources – Paizo published only
9. Alignment – non-evil

Any questions, pop them up and I’ll do my best to respond.

Sovereign Court

Just curious are we allowed to mix in casting classes, so we can weave spells and such in our unarmed style?

Intrested indeed.

Casting classes and spells are fine - as long as the focus of the character is on the unarmed combat. I'm interested to see how creative people can get.

In a similar vein - I would consider weapons like the Cestus as an acceptable interpretation of 'unarmed'.

OH Thank you Thank you Thank you Voice. I've been dying to try an unarmed fighter with Master of Many Styles dip. I'll come up with further things soon, but consider me full on submitting in a bit.

The Exchange

I am idly curious about monster feats like "improved natural weapon" and the what not, how do you feel about those?

@ PirateDevon - in what context? It's easier to respond coherently if you are able to proffer specific details.

It occurs to me that half orcs can gain natural weapons via racial traits, additionally the use of claws by things like a dragon disciple might make sense to enhance in this context. Obviously Ultimate Combat ha many non-monk options but I was wondering about more bestial options. It was a loose idea so I am short in specifics, sorry.

@ PirateDevon - in principle I would be open to consider that style of build.

While I was trying to hold out and let my PbPs dwindle as PbPs (unfortunately) have a tendency to do, this... this I cannot pass by. Pencil me in for an Elven Flowing Monk, though I won't be able to get the rest up until Saturday.

One other tidbit of info is that I'll be running the monastery in a similar way to the magic schools in Inner Sea Magic, with fame and PP rewards to suit.

The Exchange

I can't get the Jean Claude Van Damme movie "The Quest" out of my head. It was a bad movie but seeing all those fighting styles in one place was so cool. I am totally jazzed about this concept, I just need to actually pick something to build...

Submitted for review.

I need to go back and fill in the text on abilities but I believe everything else is there...let me know if something is missing.

PirateDevon / Kaisen - noted and everything looks in order in the profile.

'The Quest' was indeed a bad movie if you watched it all in one sitting. But the last 30 minutes or so were pretty cool.

Holy crap! I can't pass this up. Two concepts come to mind. I'll flesh them both out over the weekend, and if you like either one, Voice, you can let me know.

Should have a character up tonight/early tomorrow. Working on it now. Monk 2, Unarmed Fighter 2.

EDIT: DM Voice, what's your stance on Cesti/Spiked Gauntlets/Brass Knuckles doing monk unarmed damage? Allowed? Not allowed?

@ Eben - I'd ask you to pick only one concept that you like the most and run with that.

@ Ryuko - I am open to allowing cesti / other fist type weapons to work in with monk unarmed damage, and other feats / abilities that rely on unarmed strikes. It may be tied into a monastery prestige type reward.

Ryuko here. Got this up. Any comments, thoughts, anything else?

Ryuko / Nisk - looks ok so far, only thing I see missing is the description of your fighting style.

Ah, sorry, didn't mean to leave that out. Also, do you mind if I reflavor my cestus a bit into bone spurs lashed to several parts of my body (elbows, knees) I was considering a very Muay Thai style and since that's very full body I'd need that. Or just keep the gauntlet and attack regularly since it doesn't really matter.

Ryuko - Cestus re-flavor to include elbow and knee based weapons is fine, and yes I can see how you'd need it for a muay thai style.

Alright, updated with one snakey styled Muay Thai description.

One last question: Would you say that the 1.5xSTR bonus that Dragon style gives me on my first attack would make my power attack with unarmed use the two handed power attack tradeoff (-1/+3)? I have it written as allowing that, if not it'll be easy to fix, I'm just not certain how those would interact.

Silver Crusade

What about the 'free-handed-fighter' archetype for the Fighter? Combination of off-handed trickery and a weapon of some kind?

I already have a character made-up along these lines. *wiggle eyebrows*

@ Nisk - the area is slightly grey, but I wouldn't see any real harm in allowing the increased power attack tradeoff. Though more from the 'natural weapon that adds 1.5 times str bonus' angle.

@ FuriaRi0T - only if the main hand weapon is either his fist, or essentially fist-like (such as a cestus or brass knuckles or a claw). I appreciate that it is a very narrow and specific request, but that is the flavor of PbP that I want to put together.

Silver Crusade

I'd most likely swap out his current Bastardsword for a fist like weapon, which is completely doo-able and matches the character in RP style. What about the Ultimate Combat's 'Scizore'?

@ FuriaRi0T - feel free to put it forward if that's what you think fits in with the brief that I originally requested. The concept would be evaluated against the others that are put forward, and I'll decide which fit my intent for the campaign.

Keep in mind that your character is seeking tutelage in an Irorian monastery under a master that is famous for unarmed combat.

This is definitely interesting, I'll see what i can get together!

I have a GREAT concept for an unarmed Halfling Monk that I'd love to try out, if I could!

Fancy!

I wants me some!

My current concept is the street-brawler who got some real training and became obsessed with creating and improving his own style. He goes from school to school proving his abilities by pummeling the tar out of anyone who will accept his challenge, and when he gets beaten, he stays for a while to learn what they have to teach, collecting a new style. He also collects banners, taking the plaques or flags from the school and keeping them with him.

Twist: He's a dwarf.

I'm likely looking at either the master of many styles, who adapts his fighting style to his opponents with feat-chains supplemented with a few levels of unarmed fighter, or the Maneuver Master, who will simply overwhelm anyone with a dirty form of combat that leaves people wishing they'd chosen a different vocation.

Glad to see some interest in this :) All you need to do to be in the running is pop up a concept in line with the guidelines. Recruitment will be open till probably Tuesday.

Bandogrim Cotton chuckled to himself as the lumbering half-orc stumbled from the ring, still groggy from his brief unconsciousness. "Typical brutish brawler," the little halfling thought to himself. "Speed and strength and flailing limbs will fall prey to a wise plan, every time."

Bandogrim thought back on his youth, when the human boys would prod at him and embarrass him on his way to and from the market. It was on one of those days that the kindly herbalist from Minkai had come to his rescue, scattering the boys with a flurry of smacks and trips. The old man spoke little of the Common tongue, and Bandogrim knew nothing of the Tian languages, but the two became fast friends nonetheless. The halfling boy followed the old man about, learning all that he could-- about herbs and the martial arts and the secret power within oneself.

The poor, old herbalist was passed on, now; but Bandogrim Cotton's journey had barely begun. He had come here, to this monastery dedicated to the god of self-perfection, in order to further his own skills and knowledge."

Bandogrim Cotton stands 3'3", and weighs a slight 33 lbs. His wood-brown hair is full of rings and curls, and his bright blue eyes are always friendly. A jovial fellow, he is rarely seen without a warm smile on his face.

I've never played in a PbP, though I've been playing tabletop RPG's for most of my life. Would you like me to post my character breakdown right here, or would you prefer I e-mail it to you?

Thanks!

@ Joe - easiest for me is to throw up the details in a spoiler in this thread. The reqs are up in the first post.

How do you feel about a Druid with level (or two) dip in monk. The concentration would be on weaponless fighting in whatever form. Sound interesting

@ Joe - easiest for me is if you post up the character details in a spoiler on this thread. Reqs are in the first post, and don't worry about it potentially being your first PbP - I won't hold that against you.

@ Vesta / Tiny Coffee - I think going to a wildshaping druid is probably a step too far for this campaign. I don't disagree that it is a potentially cool concept, but maybe not for this PbP.

Alrighty. I'm also curious how quigon monk works mechanically. Maybe one of those.

Cool beans!

Bandogrim is a thoughtful fighter-- he's not so quick or so strong as other monks and brawlers, but he loves to outwit his opponents with well-placed strikes and painful blows. He's also good at analyzing the weak points in his allies physical abilities, helping them to improve their own efficiency, both in and out of battle.

•Feats: Dodge, Mobility, Deflect Arrows, Improved Reposition
History: It was a whim when he started. Initially, he found work in a fighting salle, and was intrigued by some of the methods that he saw demonstrated. So he decided to explore the methods that he had seen, with the simplest concepts. If he was fast enough, understood the idea enough, but there was only so far he could go on his own. There was refinement he needed that he could not see. So he had to find someone that knew more.

Two steps brought him closer to the first of the trio from his side of the table and the sloppy punch was easily avoided, making it all the easier to return him to his seat. That his face was the first thing that contacted the seat was his fault, really. It would take him a few seconds before he could see well enough to do anything again. Three steps took him through the now-empty space Punch-drunk had been in and to the second of the trio. Number two tried to pull a dagger, and Cass was lucky enough to manage the disarm he had seen a soldier practice for a week straight. It didn't change the fact that he still swung a punch that landed, but Cass was not planning on sticking around.

Four steps brought him to the door, swatting away the crossbow bolt that would have hit him in the shoulder from Number three. The bolt still hit him, but sideways was not the way crossbow bolts were supposed to hit. A half-second later, he was out the door, leaving behind the card game.

Joe and Me'mori - apps look fine, I don't need any more detail at this point.

This is FuriaRi0T - I chose a different path than the fighter, as I wanted to do something different than most everyone else!

4. Basic Backstory:
I apologize for the RUSHED background - I wanted to get something down before going more in-depth, and will perfect it later.
Vandrill 'Stonefist' Ag'roe is a somewhat well known fighter in the underground boxing scene. He's known for his versatility and, erhm... 'Dirty' fighting style. Many don't expect a magic user to step into the ring with the burly muscular folks that typically inherit the fighting styles, but he chose to. He was always taller than everyone, but scrawnier than all of his opponents. Most bet against him when he steps into the ring, that is for the ones who didn’t already know of him.

Well, Mr. Stonefist earned his name in his most recent fight. He knocked the opponent after his Cestus covered fists had been encompassed in stone. Around the fighting groups, there was a location in an Irorian Monastery somewhere around that would train fighters in unarmed combat. As always, he was intrigued to better himself in combat, so he sought these masters.

5. A descriptive example of your combat style:
He utilizes his intelligence, dexterity, and magic to gain advantage over his opponents. He does not wear any form of armor - just uses his magic as his defense. He was trained as a boy in the Elven magic’s, however he learned fist-fighting through many many years of hard work, and small, unsanctioned bar brawling fights. His fists were never very useful in a fight, so he chose the Cestus as his choice of weapon. His last fight earned him the nickname ‘Stonefist’ – after knocking his opponent out utilizing the stonefist spell.

If you click on my name, the first 4 questions you asked are also recorded there. Again, I apologize for the rushed background - I wanted to get my submission in quickly. I will perfect it by Tuesday. All I have remaining to do is purchase my equipment and items.

Nisk wrote:
Ryuko here. Got this up. Any comments, thoughts, anything else?

Forgive me if this is unwarranted or unwelcome, but I was looking at Nisk and saw one thing which kinda popped out.

Quick comment on Nisk:
You have him listed as a Monk (Martial Artist, Master of Many Styles), but those two archetypes can't be combined, as they both replace Perfect Self, at 20. However, since you only took a 2-level dip into monk, I'm guessing that your only reason for wanting Martial Artist was to get around the Lawful requirement? If you're not planning to grab more monk levels, this can just as easily be explained by an alignment shift once he stopped being a monk to become a fighter.

For Nisk's history, he may have been Lawful while training with and learning from Stalle, but something pushed him away-- be it his earlier life on the streets, Stalle's death, or what-have-you.

Kung-Fu Joe here. Compiled all the relevant info on Bandogrim Cotton into his profile (this Alias thing is fantastic!) and added some further description of his fighting style, along with a link to a video which demonstrates that style particularly well (thanks to Ryuko for that idea!)

Also, corrected a small mistake I made in my Ability Stats. CON should be 10, not 12.

Collating Apps thus far (apologies if I have anything incorrect):

Complete:
PirateDevon / Kaisen Osk - Human Martial Artist
Nisk / Ryuko - Half-Elf Unarmed Fighter / Master of Many Styles
Me'mori - Elven Flowing Monk
FuriaRi0t / Vandrill Ag'roe - Elf Kensai
Kung-Fu Joe / Bandogrim Cotton - Halfling Ki-Mystic / Sensei / Qing-Gong

Incomplete:
Roidrage
redclover
Purplefixer
Tiny Coffee Golem
Eben TheQuiet

Recruitment is still open, and shall remain so until Tuesday my time (roughly 48 hours from this post).

** spoiler omitted **

Ah... that's a good point. Didn't see that they both replaced. You're right about avoiding alignments, but that works well as a backstory reason for alignment shift. So I'll go ahead and make him an ex-monk and lose martial artist, thanks.

Just thought I'd add a Roof Running Rogue to the mix. He's more about attacking first; preferably while the enemy doesn't know he's there yet, or better yet during the surprise round with a charge, or else grappling. Later on, stunning fist will be added to the bag of tricks, as will the advanced talent that allows you to add sneak attack to a full attack once per day.

Backstory:

Jarquin never did like keeping his feet on the ground; even as a child he climbed as high as he could up anything he could. His family lived in a human city, and this gave young Jarquin a veritable playground. He quickly noticed that almost all of the locks in a building tend to be on the ground floor; getting in through a second or third floor window was much easier - and much more fun. He never took anything too expensive, unless it was from someone he thought didn't deserve it, and if he was seen, he'd be out of the window, onto the roof and jumping between the buildings as if he were more at home there than on the street.

He never carried a weapon; he wasn't there to kill anyone, and he always believed that carrying a weapon makes you far too tempted to use it. Having said that, he was more than willing to beat someone up, or put someone into a choke hold until it knocked them out - or, if someone was really persistent once on the rooftops, he'd make sure that they fell before he did. Recently, however, he stole something from someone quite prominent in town, and he needs an excuse to get away for a while. He's been hearing rumours about some guy teaching martial arts; perhaps that's the ideal excuse to give his parents...

Combat Style:

Jarquin grumbles as he looks at the man in front of him; the man who's about to draw a shortsword and raise the alarm. He runs up to the man, punching to wind him before he can cry out. The shortsword is drawn, and after a slash at his torso, Jarquin grabs the guard's arm and begins to twist and contort it. Not long after, there's a sharp snap as the arm breaks. dropping the shortsword, and Jarquin runs for the window, deftly avoiding the clutter that was knocked to the floor during the scuffle. He climbs out and onto the rooftop and runs as fast as he can for home, leaping between the rooftops as he goes. Good job it's night time; fewer people to see him, and he can move fairly quietly even at speed.

Basic Backstory:

Level 1: Rogue 1
This blonde-haired boy is a disappointment to his father. "Shape up!" he says. "Practice your drills!" he says. "Do honor to Torag!" he says. The Khagan clan goes back into antiquity as proud warriors and strong smiths, the first born inheritor of each generation learning history at his grandmother's knee and the art of war at his father's hip. Not Khaddar. Khaddar likes the lewd carvings his friends make. Khaddar likes the combustible beer his uncle brews of the mushrooms and cave molds that thickens to mud if left in the open air for too long. Khaddar likes to skip his dreary drills and head down to the badger burrows and bet on the darkest streaks and the biggest claws. Khaddar gets beaten up, Khaddar loses money, Khaddar comes home poor and bruised and his father says to him "Shape up! Practice your drills! Do honor to Torag!" but Khaddar doesn't care. He wants to be left alone with his dirty sculptures and his lazy friends. Khaddar wants to have fun. There'll be time to be serious when he's older.
See Khaddar be lazy? See Khaddar be disinherited? See Khaddar's younger brother sadly hug him and say that maybe father will change his mind? See Khaddar swear his blood oath and don his shameful beard-clasp and run far away from Highhelm? Run, Khaddar, run.

Level 2: Maneuver Master 1
Khaddar runs far. Khaddar runs VERY far! Khaddar runs south through the deep tunnels and surfaces in the great plains of Taldor. Khaddar makes noises and makes attentions and gets beat up still, but now he kicks hard, smacks people back, and learns that the Monks of Irori will take just about anyone who swears to scrub until their hands bleed, and wrestle until they fall asleep on their feet, and wake up to scrub some more. Irori is not so different from Trudd. Khaddar makes his promises, and for a while, is happy. One day, monks from another monastary come, these ones do not wear holy symbols and wrestle in armor. These ones are practically naked. Shirtless, puffy pants like Qadiran pirates, little slippers... They fight like DEMONS! They can't be held down! You knock them over and they rise to their feet again. They strike out with hands, and feet, and elbows, and foreheads, and one with his chin! For these fighting-priests, everything is a weapon. When they defeat the best warriors of Irori, they do not gloat, they do not laugh, they smile and thank the clerics for their enlightenment, for their hospitality, and for the competition and sportsmanship. These priests have HONOR! Honor that would do Torag proud!
Khaddar must know more. In the week these fighting priests from the lands far away in Tien Xia he learns all he can, picking up much of their language, much of their lore, and picking up stakes to go along with them. The most confusing part, however, was this 'Yaburi' they claimed to be on. The students would go from one martial institute to another, challenging the fighters of various styles, and testing their techniques. It was all in an honorable sort of competition, and rarely was someone ever seriously hurt. When they left, the priests were given a single simple request, for which they asked to have the banner at the front door. Their wagon was full of such banners! In this way, they marked their victories, in much the same was as the dwarven right of the Gladdringgar. An honor even dwarves could understand radiated from these monks, and Khaddar spent a year training with them, watching them move from place to place, until they returned to Minkai. He parted ways with them in Jamelray, where they suffered a defeat at an order of high-flying magical martial artists with radically different styles, and moved on to ship himself toward Absalom, but not before purchasing many scrolls of ancient techniques from Dwarven, Tien, and even Vudran styles of such unarmed combat. He had made a decision.

Level 3: Rogue 2
Through rigorous study, the once chaotic dwarf found his way back to the level, honorable behavior his father had always tried to impress upon him. He studied hard, and the scrolls he had available gave him great insight to fighting techniques seldom practiced by any. He learned a hundred places on the body to weaken and paralyze, to slow bloodflow, to cause intense pain. 'Pressure Points' the scrolls describe them, and the decision he made was to take this rare form of martial art and perfect it, to test it against all schools and disciplines, and to return home and apologize to his father, and regain his lost honor. There are many fighting styles in Absalom, and he began at the bottom, challenging small schools and being bested every time. Time after time, in fact, until he learned to scrub floors and cookpots and chamber pots until his fingers bled. He never complained, never gave up, and many taught him their styles of fighting.

Level 4: Unarmed Fighter 1
A new blend of style, the Dwarf is unshakeable. He can knock you down, stand you up, twist you around, tie you in scarves. He can place an elbow, or a knee, or a knuckle, in just one place, and cause excrutiating pain. He learns greater and greater techniques to paralyze and hamper, and end a fight against a single opponent. Today he travels from school to school, plying his martial skill against others, always seeking new ways to test the versatile skills of his improvised style, and subtly blending dwarven training techniques, even as he tries to ply lost styles of subteranean martial art, such as the Stance of the Xorn into his combat mastery. One day he will perfect his skill, one day no axe or club will touch him, and then he will return to his father, and make his apology. That day he will be whole again.

The Style
This style can mechanically be described as 'knock you down and beat the stats out of you'.
Flurry of Maneuvers to Trip, then grapple with a bonus, inflicting a -4 penalty on defeating my combat maneuver defense with your poor sad grapple check. Stunning may or may not be dropped in there, to add insult to injury, or to enable sneak attack against creatures like big furry elephants that I cannot knock down or grapple effectively.

Khaddar leaps forward and smashes his shoulder into his opponents knees, coming up rolling to land atop the poor sod with a hand gripping him on the neck. Trying to keep hold, he grins maniacally down at him and grunts. "One."

At the start of his next turn, Khaddar counts grunts and twists his oponent in the most unpleasant of possible ways, enabling a painful joint-lock while he unspins the scarf wrapping his left arm, used to keep the hold. While his opponent screams and wriggles, the dwarf deftly loops the nigh-unbreakable silk around and around, and knots it tight, snickering softly while he grunts "Two!"

Twisting the tied and bound opponents wrist, he waits until maximum torque without damage is reached, straining muscle and weakening grip as he growls "Aye, ye give up? Tha's three. Dun make me count four..." ((That last is an unarmed strike for sneak attack damage, and a new grapple for sneak attack damage. Each sneak attack is bonus 1d6, but more importantly, does one point of strength or dex damage because of Pressure Points.))

*Bows*

Sorry to be showing interest late. Are there positions still open?

How many people is the Dm looking for? I see seven already...

Much cheers to every one.

Edit: *Bows* Indeed.

Apps still open and I'm looking for probably 4-5. Selection and submission guidelines are in the first post.

As much as this game sounds fun, I'll withdraw my name. My concepts are fairly redundant to a few I've seen already, and I'm struggling to feel like I'll actually have time to give the game the attention it deserves.

Good luck to all the applicants. I"ll probably lurk if I can.
