Hey everyone, sorry I've been silent lately, times have been weird but I'm still around! Unfortunately I was just offered a last minute job out in the middle of nowhere for the next 4-5 days, so I expect to be gone until Thursday this week...

Yes, Javell, it's fine to improve your shield.
As a general rule, I'm fine if people update their items by paying the difference in prices.

As for the ambush...
With the Survival roll, Karl locates exactly the location he wants about a half mile away from the gatehouse. I assume the intent is to lure the trolls and trollhounds into an area in which they can easily be attacked while offering some protection for the group.
I'm going to create a map, but in the meantime, could everyone please roll Initiative, followed by three attacks. These could be attack rolls, spells, etc. Also remember that the trolls are large and have reach, so to get the most out of the ambush, I highly recommend ranged or thrown weapons.
The general idea is that you get the first round surprise attacks, then because of the ambush location, you get another two rounds before the trolls and trollhounds are able to act normally and actually attack the characters (possibly because of the terrain, or simple traps that Karl sets, etc)
So we'll have:
Surprise - Characters only (enemies flat-footed)
Round 1 - Characters only
Round 2 - Characters only
Round 3 - Characters and enemies
Does that all make sense?

Javell DeLeon |

Okay, I'm gonna have to go into melee. I have zero ranged capabilities. You'd think I would've had something. Don't know why I don't even think about these things. :p
So, after haste, I'll move into melee. But I'm not sure how to go about all that until an enemy appears. About the only thing I can do ahead of time is drink a Potion of Protect from evil.
So do I just delay until the bad guys show up?

Professor Rokannon |

Also, Professor Rokannon offers to cast Dancing Lights in the form of "one faintly glowing, vaguely humanoid shape". He can move it out up to 150 yards away and move it at up to 100'/round, as long as it is in line of sight. This might be enough to lure the Trolls/Trollhounds into our killzone, and he can cast it without voiding the Invisibility Sphere.

DM Haldhin |

Posted a recap of the ambush - your group almost got all of them.
Morbury, apologies if this setup didn't work for you. I wanted to provide some additional benefits beyond the usual single surprise round for planning and enacting the ambush. Based on the skill check results, I gave the group the surprise round, plus two additional rounds, before the trolls were able to respond. Maybe I should have explained all of this before hand, but honestly, I just didn't think about it. :)
Again, sorry if this created some chaos, that was not my intent.
As for the current battle, let me know what you want to do with the last troll. I have a map I can post on short notice, but with only one remaining enemy, I'm not sure if you need it or not.

Javell DeLeon |

@Karl: I was wondering what kinda weapon you were using so I checked out your character sheet. I noticed an "Enchanted Whetstone". Man that is just a freaking cool item!
Was it a custom item or is it found in one of the Paizo books?
Does it stack if you make the sword magic?
Quite the handy item, I gotta say.

Karl the Bastard |

Hey Morbury (I always have to check, I can never remember who your alias is.) It was the reward for finishing the first book of the AP. I'm not sure if it was part of the original book or a nifty homebrew creation. Darren got something too, as did the rest of the party members who finished off the adventure.

Javell DeLeon |

Spoiler=Karl]"Could be dangerous to have Alpon with us. Loyalties here can switch quickly if his master has a staff with a skull..."[/spoiler]*facepalm*
Yeah that's why I always preview before I post anything. And like a million times too. You just never know. :p

Javell DeLeon |

I notice that seems to happen fairly often among posters so I'll ask you, DW, 'cause I'm really curious.
So when you post, do you just hit submit and immediately close out the window? Put your computer to sleep? Get up and run away vowing to never return! Well, until the hour is up anyway. :) This is strictly curiosity. I've always wondered what reasoning there may be behind it. Mainly because, I HAVE to ALWAYS see what my post looks like and see if it's right, like, ALL THE TIME. Yep, all the time. Because if something goes wrong like that for me and I don't catch it, man that just bugs the crap out of me. I've gone back and noticed I spelled a word wrong, after it's way too late to change it, and THAT bugs the crap out of me. Yeah I know. Way too... something. I can't think of a proper word for it.
Heck, if this is happened to any of the rest of you, I'd like to know what it was you did as well to not catch it. I'm interested.

Dreaming Warforged |

Hey Javell, you kind of put me on the spot here...
I'm sorry if what I did irks you. I must say, it's a mix of trying to post as regularly as I can, and being too lazy to take all the time the tools use imply.
Usually, I preview my post, but mostly when I gm and they're a bit complicated. If I don't preview them, I still look at them to see whether there is something wrong with the formatting, but not normally checking for typos.
The exception is when I'm trying to sneak a post in when not at home. This is usually done using my phone, which doesn't lend so well with previewing, editing, etc. I also don't have much time to post when I use the phone, so I'm not likely to even just check at the post...
You make a good point though, and I should take just a wee bit more time, especially when I put a spoiler tag.

Javell DeLeon |

No, no, no! An issue like that doesn't bother me when it's somebody else. I only hate it when I do it.
I was just curious as to how something like that happens. Because that tends to happen to a lot of different folks so that's why I asked.
It's truly nothing more than curiosity.

DM Haldhin |

Not a problem for me, I can't count the number of times I've typed a post, previewed it, made a few edits, previewed it again, then hit submit, only to find a spelling error when I look at it the next day. As the DM, that's a real facepalm moment, especially when it's something trivial or simple.
After years of it happening, I've learned to think of these little blips as "features" of the PbP medium. :)

Professor Rokannon |

It's not precisely the picture I have in my mind (he's a bit younger and more distinguished), but pretty close. I wish I could find one of him smoking a pipe. (Stupid modern political fads...)

DM Haldhin |

Hi everyone,
So I’m alive and doing reasonably well. Sorry for disappearing; as most of you know, my schedule has gone through some massive changes over the past few months. I won’t get into details, but suffice to say, between changes at work and my son’s new/revised/ever-changing sleeping schedule, the 2+ hours of free time I typically had at night has all but vanished. I have tried to keep up, but my efforts have more often ended up with me asleep at my desk rather than producing anything for my games. After some retrospective consideration of what’s been going wrong for me, I’ve decided that I’ve been trying (in vain) to maintain a posting pattern that just doesn’t work with my current lifestyle.
All that said, I sincerely enjoy running my games, and I really want to continue DMing. I am therefore going through a (hopefully short) process of examining my new daily schedule to try and carve out new pockets of free time I can use for updating game threads. To try and better focus on the games I run, I have also resigned from all the games in which I was a player.
Hopefully, my efforts will result in a more consistent updating schedule, and we’ll get some solid momentum back in the games. I want to thank everyone for their patience – I know it’s not easy being on that side of the computer and wondering what’s happening.
I will make every effort to post an update tonight, then again on Friday.
Feel free to post questions here or send PMs as needed.
Thanks,
Andrew/Haldhin

DM Haldhin |

All, finally have some free time to spend on updating my games. My son was very sick last week, and anybody who has children knows what kind of chaos ensues when that happens. Sleep and free time have been precious (and rare) commodities around my house lately.
But he's feeling better, my wife is baking cookies, and everything seems to be settling down once again.
To Javell's point, I understand that the holidays can be hectic for people, so I will do my best to respond promptly to any questions or situations that arise in the game. To that end, I'll have an update today, and we'll kind of play it by ear for the rest of the year. After we get through the holidays, I should be good for a more consistent posting schedule on a daily basis during the week.

Javell DeLeon |

My posting will be more normal after Christmas. I've managed today off, but I have to work Sunday. We NEVER work Sunday. This has been the worst peak season for me ever. I've managed one post in like 3 or 4 days in one game of mine, and that took like 20 minutes for a measly three lines. I could barely stay awake to write it. 12 hour days will do that to you.
Will be glad when this holiday is up work wise. Personally, I love this time of the year; just not when it comes to work.
