Hello, everyone! I am opening recruitment for another PbP adventure here on the Paizo boards. This will be a little different than my other games, as it will be a player-driven sandbox adventure in the rich Varisian region (that's pretty fun to say out loud).

I'm looking for 4-5 players, but I'm open to more if there are some great applications.

Application
To apply, please complete the steps below.

1. Build a character using the crunch below.
2. Share how often you can post/contribute to the game. I don't want to put unrealistic expectations on the group, but I'd like to shoot for one post per day on weekdays. If we go faster, I'm down with that.
3. Share how many other PBPs you're currently playing.
4. Share why your character is in Varisia and one great example of his/her adventuring past (aka your backstory - more on this below).

Character Creation Crunch:

CRITICAL NOTE: This game isn't designed for uber-optimized characters and I'm not looking for the best min-maxers; I'm looking for the most interesting group.

1. All characters begin at level three.
2. 20-point ability buy. There WILL be penalties for low ability points.
3. Non-evil alignments.
4. All Paizo-created races are acceptable, but core races are preferred. No custom or third-party races are allowed.
5. Paizo-created classes and archetypes only. No samurai, ninjas or summoners.
6. Two traits. You may pick a campaign trait from any of the APs that take place in Varisia (RotRL, CotCT, Second Darkness, Jade Regent and Shattered Star) or the traits in the city guides. Try to pick traits that align with your backstory, not just add to your character's stats (or figure out how to add stat-boosting traits into your backstory).
8. Level 3 starting gold. If you take a crafting profession, you may craft at 1/3 of the items' prices, but only if you've taken three skill points in that profession.
9. Max HP at level one, roll or 1/2 HD + 1 thereafter.
10. A super-secret bonus/penalty to be applied if your character is selected.

About Your Character
As this isn't a traditional AP, your background can be wide open, but here some things to keep in mind:
- Your character needs to have some interest in adventuring. They can be a shopkeeper or banker, but they need to also crave leaving their shop and home to do epic things.
- Your character, being level 3, has done some epic - or at least interesting - things already. I don't need their entire life history documented in recruitment, but include at least one example of an amazing feat or challenge they've accomplished or overcome.
- This is a player-driven campaign, which means I'll be looking to your characters for motivation on where to take the story and adventure. Your character should have a reason to be in Varisia and some purpose, goal or destination in mind. What is it? (Let me know if you have any questions about this piece).
- The adventure will begin in a small roadside tavern (surprise!) in Turtleback Ferry called The Turtle's Parlor.

Recruitment will run until I have enough applicants to choose a full party. So get those apps in quickly.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I look forward to the applications!

This sounds like my kind of campaign - I love sandbox adventures! The only problem I see is that if you want a player-driven story, us players would need to agree on some rough common-shared goal :)

Varisia eh? An alchemist, sorcerer, wizard, bard or magus who hails from the Theumanexus of Korvosa sounds like a fun set-up. I don't know how you look upon randomized characters, but a DM I know has had great success with rolling some random characters for his parties. If you want, I can share his method - are you open for that?

a couple of questions

a) Are you shooting for strictly Varisian characters, with ties to the land, or characters from anywhere in Golarion who happens to be in Varisia?

b) Does the sandbox nature of the adventure means that our backstories should provide you with specific hooks and goals?

As for my character, I'd love to play a dwarven merchant from Janderhoff. Unsure yet what class I'd want, but something with skills and synergy with int/wis seems in order :)

Sounds interesting, I will have to see if can come up with something. First thoughts that come to mind are either a Shoanti barbarian from the Sklar-Quah clan or perhaps an Elven Ranger (Falconer).

Lantern Lodge

Dotting for interest. Will develop a concept later tonight after work (maybe a couple if I have nifty ideas I can't decide between).

I haven't played a rogue in awhile, so that may be in the stars.

@Krass - I should clarify. Player-driven may be overstated. Your character's motivations and goals will guide the adventure, but I'll be providing hooks and nuggets to help point you in specific directions. Of course, you're welcome to ignore those hooks and nuggets all you want, I suppose.

And I'm open to the random character method - is it DM Azure Zero's? I like that method and think it's a fun way to come up with some interesting characters. I won't require it, but you're more than welcome to use it if you'd like.

@Airon - a) Either is fine. b) That's my hope.

I've got a clonemaster Alchemist I've been itching to play. I'll work on the official application today.

I present Malcolm Cavendish for your consideration, Paladin Warrior of the Holy Light, worshiping Abadar and hailing from Magnimar.

I'd love to play! I am thinking a Crossblooded Kitsune Sorcerer that focuses on Enchantments. If you are okay with that, if not I can focus on something else.

Indeed, it is Azure Zero's. I'd love to have fate guide my character in this. Inspiration and ideas come easy for me, but boxing in the class, race and archetype can be hard for me *laughs*

Assault: Cavalier, Alchemist
Skilled: Rogue, Inquisitor
Divine: Oracle, Druid
Arcane: Wizard, Sorcerer
Races: Dwarf, Human, Undine, Sylph

Next post I'll do the rolls.

Assault: Cavalier, Alchemist
Skilled: Rogue, Inquisitor
Divine: Oracle, Druid
Arcane: Wizard, Sorcerer
Races: Dwarf, Human, Undine, Sylph

choosing type and class: 1d4 ⇒ 21d2 ⇒ 1
choosing race: 1d4 ⇒ 3

Undine rogue! Okay, that's different. He'll most likely hail from Korvosa and be a proficient trader and sailor. There's plenty of water and wealth to be found in Varisia, so that should form a a proper core. If the combination (or race) isn't to your liking, feel free to replace undine and sylph with something of your liking and reroll it for me :)

I assume guns follow the "emerging firearms" rules?

Pathfinder Rulebook Subscriber

@Katcando - I'm good with it. Roll it up!

@Airon - That is correct.

@Krass - I'm good with it. Are you going to add in some random archetypes or just let it stand as is?

Ah, I had forgotten all about that. Let's see how much further I can dig my own grave with this random stuff! *laughs*

Archetypes: Charlatan, Spy, Poisoner, Sniper.

Archetypes:Charlatan, Spy, Poisoner, Sniper.: 1d100 + 1d100 + 1d100 + 1d100 ⇒ (66) + (89) + (23) + (39) = 217

Spy it is. Now I need to tie in for what organisation/government he'd work :)

Grand Lodge

here is my random roll for class

Combat: Paladin, Ranger, Gunslinger
Support: Inquisitor, Bard, magus, rogue
Arcane: Sorcerer, Witch
Divine: Druid, Oracle

Class: 1d4 ⇒ 4 shesh i get more divine

Fluff: Cynthia is an expert, an expert in languages and old history. And she has been fascinated about the old Thassilonian empire. Needless to say it became her prim focus of study.

She actually gained some fame by partaking in an expedition that allowed to recover parts of an old thassilonian rune magic ritual. Not only was cynthia the one who deciphered possible location of the missing piece of the scroll, but she was also the only one that was able to decipher its formula.

(She actually used some insight as she remembered one of her past lives as an agent of Emperor Xin)

ps i hope you are ok with someone who will focus on summoned creatures for help.)

Dotting this with this character...no where near done yet but it's a neat idea I've had bouncing around for awhile. Plan on focusing on knowledge, rogue-y stuff, and general adventuring skills so hopefully I'm not stepping on your spy's toes too much.

And to answer #2 and #3...I'm in two games at the moment. Once a day is perfectly fine with me, I usually check the boards once a day anyway. Realistically, I'd say 10-12 posts a week is probably the absolute maximum I could do on a regular basis.

I'm losing trap sense and trapfinding and got a penalty to strength, so in that sense there's way more room for another rogue'ish type. I checked your character and the two should make for a lovely duo, unless your character hates the color blue.

Grand Lodge

oh and DM i play regularly in 6 PbP and post multiple times / day

I have Gunslinger/Bard (archaeologist) who just begs to be called Oppara Jones (I won't do it, but the temptation is there) - another skill-focused type, I'm afraid.

I also have a very solid Cavalier, less Hollywood, but maybe more boring.

The choice is hard.

Hammas is a female half-orc, though it would be hard to tell by looking. Pig-like tusks, enlarged ears, and strong coloring leave her looking full orc, and a bestial one at that. Flaring nostrils and twitching ears further cement her status as a wild creature, almost a beast herself, in the minds of those who meet her, at least to those who don't know the wild.

To those in the know however; she appears very much like any other successful trapper who would brave the wilds of Varisia alone and, since that is the company she keeps, that is what really matters.

Height: 5'10"
Weight: 208lbs

At the end of the river the sundown beams.
All the relics of a life long lived.
Here, weary traveler rest your wand.
Sleep the journey from your eyes

personality/background:

Some become trappers because they just can't stand civilization, or civilization can't stand them. Some because they are hiding from something. And some because they'd just rather be there than anywhere else. Hammas falls into the last group, and perhaps, if we're being completely honest, a bit of the first as well. Varisia is reasonably accepting, but that doesn't mean the people don't share a preference for those with white, or at least non-green, skin over the more olive flavored.

This became more apparent as childhood turned to adolescence. Not that those around her were cruel, but children will play with the girl who can find the ripest berries and men will drink with the hunter who can follow a wounded deer on a moonless night, but suitors don't bring flowers to the girl who's green, and that hurts.

And so, Hammas drifted more into the company of those wild men and women who roam the dark forests and wild moors. Her talents made it easy. Hunting brought in meat and money, both of which are always needed in frontier families, large half-orc ones especially, and earned respect from everyone, though no offers to join at the Rose's alter.

Ah, you're right, her family. Yes, that is important. Two half-orcs met and, like what happens to most of us, decided that they rather enjoyed one another's company and enjoyed it enough to not kill each other or the squalling brats when they inevitably came along. Being in a village that, like most villages, followed Erastil and put great stock in such things as 'commitment' and 'tradition' the two got married. More children came, and more children, and some how a few more snuck in, which Hammas' father is firmly, or at least loudly, convinced that someone simply dropped off and forget to return for, surely he wasn't responsible for all of these. To which her mother would loudly reply that yes he was and had he forgotten how it came about. Ah well then, perhaps you could remind me how its done, and, inevitably, soon after another child would sneak, or rather come lustily wailing, into the house.

And no, they are all, well most of them anyway, alive and doing well. Stop assuming that everyone's families had to have died or that their home life was terrible. Hammas' was quite good and if you visit her home you'll see that they are still doing well and are well liked by their community. Few things cement a family's place in an Erastilite community like a near dozen healthy children, orcs tend to large families, though having someone willing to take all the night guard duties doesn't hurt. That's what her father is by the way, the night watchmen. Her mother raises children.

As for her personality, you're about to meet her, so why not ask her yourself.

Answers to questions

1. I typically post 2-3 times a day. Before work, during lunch, and before bed.

2. Three. One updates multiple times a day, the other once a day or so, and the third every few days. I can handle any schedule, but prefer 1/day or more.

3. Character is in Varisia because she grew up here. Overall motivation: see new things, gain wealth, find love, settle down, etc. Quite normal actually. Current goal: Learn/obtain magic. Having recently obtained a minor magical item from a Shoanti shaman, payment for killing a troublesome pair of ogres, Hammas is fascinated by the idea of finding her own magic. In the meantime, other's magic, in the form of items, will do, especially if it allows her to change shape.

From the Ultimate Campaign Background Generator, I have learned that...

Hammas is the middle of triplets with three older siblings and four younger siblings.

She has tried, and failed, at serious romantic relationships several times.

Anyone who is interested, I can use the background tables in UCamp, to generated a background. It's pretty interesting.

Lantern Lodge

I introduce Captain Castellus Cale for consideration. He's a character from a Serpent's Skull home game that I will be playing my last session with tomorrow. I'm soon-to-be moving and my GM is helping send him off with a bang. It's ironic that we just hit Lvl 3 as well.

Background (Minor spoilers for Serpent's Skull):

Captain of the Fury's Gambit, his crew mutinied when they were led to believe by Cale's traitorous first mate, Balthier Kreiss, that their captain had been holding out on them and not giving equal portion of all loot obtained to them. Cale was keelhauled and left floating lifeless in the depths of The Shackles.

Besmara smiled down upon him, however, and Cale was somehow brought back - coughing up salt on the shores of Mediogalti Island. In a scheme to get his ship back (and as revenge against his former first mate) Cale sought the services of the Red Mantis in exchange for the location to his former crew's (and his as well) cache of hidden treasure (one wrought with ancient treasures). The Red Mantis sent one of their apprentice assassins along to ensure the validity of Cale's statements. They boarded what would be a doomed merchant vessel known as the Jenivere and were marooned on a tropical island settled by cannibals and dangerous indigenous life for weeks.

How he escaped the island is a matter of contention still. Numerous tales abound, but what is known is that when Captain Castellus Cale was next spotted, it was en route north for Varisia - claiming Riddleport as his destination. Concluding mysterious business in the City of Cyphers now sees the pirate captain traveling through a small town known as Turtleback Ferry where our adventure begins...

This character is a sword-and-pistol build that I've already statted out to Lvl 20. I enjoy him very much and hope that if I'm chosen to participate in this Varisian campaign that I am able to share some wonderful stories with my fellow players as well.

Thank you.

*Note* I copied this from my Hero Lab file, so if I missed editing something, please let me know.

well I'l toss my little hat into the fray for this...

the alias has the story and character crunch for level 1

Behold Fulito Ferrywarden, Bard of the river Kingdoms, harmonica player extraordinaire!

The back story places him heading to Sandpoint, but given his knack of getting lost he could have stumbled into any Varisian town or village

Okay, so I'm starting by doing things out of order! I have a character concept that I really like, and have tried to use in PBP a couple of times, now, but which is sitting idle yet again.

Human Varisian Wanderer Rogue named Gudada Purrun. I will need to tweak his build for your character creation rules (last campaign attempt was a 1-for-1 attribute purchase), but the concept and background will remain the same. As I said, I like the concept. I won't post here using the alias until after modifying the character sheet on the alias itself.

I can post every evening during the week very easily. I can not post from work, so my posts shouldn't be expected through the weekday. I can post pretty often on the weekends, if there is cause.

My most recent PBP games attempts are effectively dead at this point. The most recently deceased hasn't had a post from the GM since 1 May. The next one back hasn't had a post from the GM since 1 Apr.

4. Share why your character is in Varisia and one great example of his/her adventuring past (aka your backstory - more on this below).

'Dada is in Varisia because it's where he's from! His "middle" childhood was spent in a street gang of Varisian youths, while his "late" childhood was spent as part of a Varisian trading caravan. 'Dada wants to experience new things, see new places, and learn more about the world around him. Conversely, he doesn't realize that he's looking for a family, a sense of comfort, ease and community that he hasn't truly known since his mother's illness and death. All of which is in the write-up already on the alias, whether obviously so or not.

Something memorable from his (short) history? I'll give some thought to that and expand upon the backstory written for him at level 1, answering this specific question later tonight.

I do apologize. I failed to note the response regarding posting availability. I can post multiple times per day as I have a mobile hotspot an I am not currently involved in any other play-by-posts.

Hello Gudada, nice meeting you again.

Noro will not be available for this journey but I will have Fulito instead...

Krass here.

I made my character (or roughly how I want him to be! I'd love your feedback, Tallgrass) and copy-pasted it into my profile.

Q Share how often you can post/contribute to the game.
A Multiple times a day. I'm stuck behind my computer all day for my studies right now.

Q Share how many other PBPs you're currently playing.
A One - Shattered Star with DM Biggrin.

Q Share why your character is in Varisia and one great example of his/her adventuring past (aka your backstory - more on this below).
A He hails from Riddleport. He grew up just outside the city in an Undine community. As a youngster - read, his fourties - he spotted a pirate raiding party heading for his community and not only swam back in time to warn them, but took part in the counter-raid to sabotage their vassals and set fire to their sails. Another one of his proud moments is the time he finally got the recipe for oil of tagging right and used it to poison the guard dogs at the Ellor estate. He then snuck in at night to liberate some silverwear from its tyrannical owners and used the proceeds to finance his alchemical business.
Right now, Alec needs to lay low a little because a certain deal went south. Alec swears he thought it was just a bottle of wine, but the local captain thought otherwise. The bri.. eh, payment for administrative expenses clearly wasn't big enough. Or perhaps he had overheard the wrong conversation by the captain and a local crimelord and was caught in the act.
Alec was lucky to get out on bail - that is, he managed to escape his cell and leave behind a sizable compensation for the captain and crimelord in the form of gold and even more poi.. eh alcohol! - but had to leave town for a while. Right now he's trying to hit the trade from other angles and heard there's a ripe supply coming in at Turtleback Ferry. Alchemist supplies, that is of course. And after all, what competition could there be in Turtleback? This ain't Riddleport, that's for sure!

I am involved in 10 PbPs and I am able to post multiple times per day. Malcolm is in Varisia because he was born there. He answered the call when goblin troubles plagued Sandpoint, but returned to Magnimar before venturing too far down that road.

Hey Azure-Zero...good to see ya again...it is Filios.

hustonj updating the application to both complete it and post as the character. The answers are abbreviated as they were previously provided in more detail.

Most of this answer is in the profile. As for an additional blurb from his past, I provide the following, about his time traveling with the caravan of people he had never met until he joined them in order to escape his hometown:

Shandor's caravan traveled through Varisia like so many others of its kind, trading, entertaining and taking from the locals as they went. In the small village of Kalbaek, 'Dada was performing with the dancers when Jofranka was grabbed by a Shoanti barbarian who was also passing through the village. The dancers stopped, the musicians followed, and the audience stared at the barbarian in shock. Gudada, however, simply kept dancing. Dancing around the Shoanti, who began cursing him and taking wild swings at 'Dada while clutching Jo tightly with his other hand.

After dancing around the barbarian three times, ducking as he did so, 'Dada started taking things from the barbarian and throwing them into the crowd. First, a sheathed knife and then a simple whetstone. The other young Varisians laughed and trilled in delight, while the older ones found weapons. When Gudada made his next acquisition, Jofranka was released and 'Dada punched in the jaw before the young man could tell what he had taken. The small purse of coins beat Gudada to the ground, but not by much. The locals and the older Varisians worked together to restrain the barbarian before he could do any real harm to anyone else.

One of the local young men asked 'Dada the next day if Jofranka was so talented as to be worth the beating. The young Varisian looked at him for a moment, smiled, and replied simply "She's family."

I'd be interested in playing a Witchguard ranger. Sadly there are no witches in the house :(

Grand Lodge

you could be Cynthia's body guard :)

Sadly the fluff is very much tied to Arcane casters.

GM Tallgrass, opps.

Forgot to update the level number. Everything is correct.

As we seem to be lacking arcane, would you like me to present a Slyph wizard(Wind listener/Diviner) for consideration? As you stated a preference for core races, she could be turned into a human winter witch without too much difficulty. That might help you out Alex Mack.

*edit The ranger's will save should be +3, instead of +2, but I think that's the only other mistake. mistake.

I am still picking traits, and working on my backstory, but here is most of the crunch.

I updated Fulito to level 3 and its all in the alias.

to some of the questions..
i usually post 1-2 times a day except weekends are not always a guarantee.

I am in several PbP but a lot I have listed in my alias are either inactive or I am no longer involved.

Geez. Where did all these rogues and bards come from? Where were you guys in every other game I've applied for? =P

I think I have everything you asked for finished. Background and crunch are done and in the profile. All that's left for me to add are a few finishing touches for my own amusement.

Basically, she's a treasure hunter but she's more interested in knowledge and historically significant stuff instead of riches. She started off small in Taldor but grew frustrated when the people she worked for kept giving her tasks she felt were beneath her. She struck out on her own toward the Thassilonian ruins in Varisia but was eventually stabbed in the back by her partner. She survived and has taken up residence in Turtle's Parlor while she recovers and replaces the things taken from her.

I'm going to withdraw my application. I was playing with the build and it occurs to me I have no idea how to do it. I've been playing arcane casters too long. lol. If anyone has any advice here's the thread. Thank you.

I normally like rolling, but I am squishy as it is!

I will roll for my Companion though. Seems less risky lol.

1d8 ⇒ 8
1d8 ⇒ 6

Also, I can post 1-2 times a day minimum, and I am not in any other PBP games.

I am still working on my backstory.

Grand Lodge

Kaya's post reminded me that i forgot to roll for hp

Cynthia Doverspeak
HP: 1d8 ⇒ 81d8 ⇒ 8

I know this is iffy, but I figure I'd ask.
I really like to play a formerly drow owned slave who was an apprentice/assistant to a fleshcrafter. Obviously can't take that feat for many levels, but I really like the idea. Character would not be evil, but would be more of a Darwinist, looking to use biology to make the world and himself better. Thinking either an alchemist or magus (because i've never played one).
I can usually post every day, sometimes multiple although during weekdays more in the evening Pacific.
If that's too odd/off no worries. Otherwise I'll work up a character.

Assuming recruitment is still open.

I can't speak for anyone else, but when I first came to try Paizo's PBP fora, I overdid it, and chased myself out of games.

Since then, I am selective about which games I apply to and avoid promising more than 1 or 2 games at a time. I apply to games where something resonates, where there's a character I want to try or, like this game, where a character I like but haven't been able to use should fit.

Mostly finished

Grand Lodge

GM tallgrass FYI i am changing race for Cynthia Doverspeak from samsaran to Elf (Oracle archetype: Ancient Lorekeeper)

it doesn't change much of the stat block but if you want i'll re post it

Consider this my dotting.

Might try rolling up a witch or wizard, since you seem low for arcane caster options. I've never done a PBP before, and I live in Australia, so my posting times might not match up, but if that's fine, then I'll start working on one tonight!

Dotting interest will have a character up with other info tonight.

For your consideration: Mister Ragman

1. Character info is on the alias profile. Mister Ragman is a witch. He is heavy on the hexes.

2. I can post every weekday no problem.

3. This is my only pbp.

4.

Backstory:
Mister Ragman was once an ordinary boy in a farming village. One year the village was suddenly overrun by a swarm of crows, eating all of the crops. The villagers tried everything but they couldn't drive the crows away. The next year the crows returned in greater numbers and began attacking livestock. The villagers feared they would starve.

One day the crows abruptly flew away. A pair of men came to the village. One was a large silent man pushing a wheelbarrow. The other was a small, malformed man who rode in the wheelbarrow. He offered to make a magic scarecrow that would keep the crows away in exchange for one child. The villagers could see that the man had some kind of power over the crows, and in their hunger and desperation they agreed. They drew straws.

A boy was given to the pair and two days later they returned with a scarecrow. The scarecrow worked. In fact it was so effective no crow was ever seen again.

After several years a thrush moved in to the scarecrows hat. The thrush began to teach the scarecrow how to break free from it's enchantment. Eventually the scarecrow was able to free himself.

The years spent standing alone in the field left the boy, now a young man, a little unhinged. His only comforts were the thrush, the lessons in magic, and the promise of revenge. The thrush explained to him that the whole thing, the crows, the scarecrow, the mysterious visitors, was all a faerie practical joke.

He'd forgotten most of his life before the enchantment, including his name, so he adopted the name given to him by the children of the village. He decided that he was going to learn to be a human again. He would travel the world, practicing his art, learning as much as he could about the Fey, and one day have his revenge.

1. In the process of building it.

2. Usually look to post at least once a day. Been doing that and sometimes more with my own pbp.

3. Just my own Age of worms campaign at the moment.

Post of character crunch soon, and background to follow either tonight or tomorrow.
