BLOCK M HISTORY
This stocky fellow is a Dwarf who found woodworking jobs on the crime-infested docks near Absalom, installing traps and false floors on merchant ships . While there, he learned a lot of roguish skills, and made a bad decision to steal a local merchant's ham and eggs because -- quite frankly -- he was tired of eating sewer rat.
He was exiled to Sandpoint, where he used his woodworking and trap detection skills to help catch the killer known as Chopper, and this ingratiated himself to the townsfolk of Sandpoint.
He's ashamed of his past and wants to start a new life in Sandpoint.

PH Dungeon- My character is basically finished. I need to calculate how much money she has left, and I'm not sure if their is Speed penalty from wearing scale male, but other than that I think she is good. If someone wants to look her over to make sure I didn't make any mistakes that would be helpful.

This is my character (TheHairyAvenger) I think Ive done this all correctly just thought I'd make it as an alias. Grateful if someone could check it over to be sure.
Oh and you can choose what you wanna buy, BB just gives suggestions that your character should have to make it simpler when you first start, Im guessing its easier if you just choose your stuff for the 70 gp limit then post and someone can say what's in and whats not but the BB has most of the necessities.
Can Clerics use swords/pointed weapons is PFR?
They could only use blunt weapons in 1E, but this is a different game of course.Between your magic missiles and my crossbow, we may have a good range attack.
The character looks balanced to me.

I don't see any mistakes.
She's a walking fortress! That should be very useful.Cool backstory, too.
BTW, how do you calculate Critical Threat and Attack Bonus?

P.H. Dungeon |

Clerics are trained in simple weapons, so they can't normally use swords without penalty. However, you could purchase a martial weapon proficiency for a cleric, thus allowing a cleric to train with a sword. Since elves are trained with longswords, an elven cleric or wizard could wield a sword without penalty. Similarly, dwarves are trained with axes, so dwarven cleric could wield a battle-axe without penalty.

Thanks for answering my questions above!
If you want to know a little more about the Dwarf Family that my character belongs to, click on my profile. I'm trying to flesh out the family history so that the (as yet) unnamed Dwarf Rogue's journey will have context. After all, it's pretty weird to have a Dwarf leave the Land of the Five Kings at all, much less travel from there to the Isle of Kortos, and then wind up all the way across the continent.

Tippo Dakar |

Okay, I am home finally, and my son is in bed. I've got the books in hand, glasses on, and a cold diet coke. Let's see if I can answer any questions that still remain:
Clerics and Swords:
Clerics aren't prevented from using swords (like in 1st edition), they just have no training. However, when you choose a deity for the cleric to worship, the cleric gets the benefit of the god's holy weapon. The three deities are Desna, Gorum, and Sarenrae.
Desna's holy weapon is a starknife, Gorum's is a longsword, and Sarenrae's is a scimitar.

Tippo Dakar |

Maya Harlech:
I'm not sure if their is Speed penalty from wearing scale male.
The BB rules don't fuss much with encumbrance but, from the Hero's Handbook (page 47), "Medium and heavy armor slows humans and elves to 20 feet." So yes, there is a penalty to your speed when wearing armor.
I calculated your gear as costing 136 gp, leaving you with 39 gp change:
Scale mail - 50 gp, Heavy steel shield - 20 gp, shortbow, etc. - 30 gp, longsword - 15 gp, dagger - 2gp, warhammer 12 gp, and adventurer's kit 7 gp.
Starting gold - 175 gp
So note the speed adjustment for wearing armor and your character sheet looks good to go.

Keith the Thief
BTW, how do you calculate Critical Threat and Attack Bonus?
Attack Bonus:
Each character class has a "Base Attack Bonus" (BAB) that increases with level. Your first level Rogue (thief) has a BAB of 0. For Melee attacks, you add your strength bonus (+1) and Ranged attacks benefit from your character's dexterity bonus (+4).
So for your Dwarf, his attack bonuses are:
- LIGHT CROSSBOW +4 (+0 BAB and +4 dexterity bonus)
- LIGHT MACE +1 (+0 BAB and +1 strength bonus)
You also add your strength bonus to any damage you do with a melee attack. Your mace does 1d6 +1 (your strength bonus). You'll be doing
Critical Threat
The critical threat is part of the weapon description. For example, your light mace (page 45) has a critical threat ("crit") of 20 x2. The first part, 20 is the number you have to roll to make a critical threat. The second number is the damage multiplier you win if you confirm the critical threat as a critical hit. You confirm the critical by rolling a second attack which, if successful, lets you apply the damage multiplier by rolling the weapon's damage the indicated number of times (for your mace, twice). If the second attack isn't successful, you just do the normal damage. (See page 59)
An example:
Your Dwarf (YD) (have I missed his name somewhere?) is fighting a goblin and it his turn to take a swing. The goblin has an armor class of 13. You roll your 20-sided die and get a 10. With your attack bonus of +1 you have an 11 which is under 13 so you miss.
The goblin attacks and misses because goblins are crap fighters.
You attack again. This time your die roll comes up 20 (before you add your bonus). Whoo-hoo! A critical threat. Tension mounting, you roll again. The roll comes up a 12, now add your attack bonus of +1. It is a 13, a hit! You roll your 1d6+1 two times, add them together, and you've probably dropped a goblin.
That's probably all clear as mud and more explanation than you needed.

How did you create the alias?
Click on the My Account link at the top of the page. It might ask for your password, but ultimately you'll end up on a page where you do things like change your password, etc. One of the headers on this page is MESSAGEBOARD ALIASES (in the left-hand column). Under this header is a link Create new messageboard alias. Follow this link to create an alias. You can put in your character information here.
Once you've created an alias, there'll be a Post As drop-down menu under the field where you type posts. You pick the alias name you want to assign your post to from here.
And I may need some help understanding how the Skills system works. That's been a stumbling block here at home.
Is there something specific about the Skills system that is giving you trouble, or is the whole thing?

This post should be from the Keith the Thief's younger brother alias, Trapper.
I'm thinking of changing Trapper's FEAT from DODGE to something else. These three seem appealing since I'd like to have him use his crossbow as effectively as possible.
* PRECISE SHOT (Hero's Handbook, pg 43)
* QUICK DRAW (pg 43)
* DEADLY AIM (pg 41)
Do any of you have any recommendations?
And I'm open to other feats, as well.
Whatever will help the party.
thanks,

Question, since I am a Kellid(Subrace of human) do I get the starting language Hallit per The Inner Sea World Guide?
My character is now done except for a few background tweaks. Let me know Tippo if this is good to go. Thanks
This seems like a great party so far. Great backgrounds for everyone.
Rather cool coincidence: Your character is searching for a Sandpoint Devil and my character witnessed one when he arrived in the area. Maybe this and the mutual hatred of orcs and goblins will ease Bone Splitter's distrust.

I believe you need Point Blank Shot as a prereq for Precise Shot. I would recommend Point Blank Shot, Weapon Focus (Crossbow), and Precise Shot.

@DM Tippo Dakar: What about my familiar? I can keep track of his stats(I was already go to). But can I have the cat? If so, do I get the +3 Stealth skill bonus?
Jobba, The BB rules don't account for familiars and I've been trying to adhere to them as much as possible but...
A wizard without a familiar is just wrong, so go ahead (including the +3 stealth). This takes the place of the Arcane Bond. There might be some editing needed to the familiar rules and the cat's stat block to bring it in line with the BB rules but we can work that out later.

Question: When it says, "Your touched ally...", does this apply to you yourself? I seem to recall reading that it does somewhere in a FAQ, but wanted a DM ruling.
My instinctive answer is yes, it does apply to yourself even though this seems to be contradicted by some spell descriptions which specify 'touched ally' and say nothing about yourself.
I'll rule 'yes' tentatively retaining the right to say 'no' when it makes no sense. For example Rebuke Death only works on a character unconscious and dying, so you can't use it on yourself. Let me know if there's a specific spell or power you have in mind and I'll let you know now.

The Bane |

Thanks for the ruling. I was just wondering because I was messing with the Free Hero Lab program for PFBB and was messing with ideas. Amazing program by the way, and free. I mention it because it might help those who don't have the BB books.
Another question: In the Hero Lab program, it has Conjuration as a specialty, but I don't see it in my copy of the HHB... Is Conjuration acceptable within your campaign?
The Bane

Tippo Dakar |

John Doe
Conjuration is fine. It is actually part of the downloadable expansion.
I agree about Hero Lab. I got it for making Mutants & Masterminds characters and I have the Beginner Box dataset but haven't used it. The group I play Beginner Box with are all RPG novices so I've been having them manage their characters by hand so they understand the nuts and bolts of it. But you've given me the idea of, once everyone is done, entering all your characters so I can keep track of them. Not sure what I'll do about your familiar though...

The Bane |

John Doe
... Not sure what I'll do about your familiar though...
I was not following that PFBB utilized familiars. My concept, which I think is a stretch for PFBB, does not necessitate one, though I could probably work one in. Are you allowing familiars from the core?
Keep in mind that I have played some 3.5, but never PF Core or as a Wizard back then. I usually played Fighters, Rogues, or occasionally Clerics then. I went back to old school "Basic" D&D when 4th was released, and want to see how PFBB holds up to actual Role-Play, so don't expect a min/max character from me. ;)

The Bane

Talberon never fancied the blade as his father, Bydern Toil, had hoped he would. He had no desire in his early years to follow in his abusive father's footsteps as a hired blade.
Talberon preferred to stay at home and help his mother, Annalyn Toil, with things in the tannery shop, and read. The adventures in the tombs of books he read interested Talby, as his few friends called him, more than any actual adventures his father professed to have when he was in from travelling.
It was early on that Annalyn, his mother, suspected his penchant for magic and gave him his grandfather's, on his mother's side, ring. She only described it as a family 'heirloom' and nothing more, not wanting to rile her husband's dislike of the craft, and the repercussions that would follow if he found out.
It wasn't until Talby's tenth summer that he discovered the possibilities of the gift his mother had given him, in the shape of an ordinary ring. He was working in the tannery when a couple local bullies came in to pick up some hides for one of their parents. As bullies do, one pushed Talby and he fell into an acidic soak tank for bleaching animal hides. The liquid splashed up his arms and onto his face.
Without thinking, Talby rose and unleashed something channeled through himself, and the ring, at the bully, knocking him flat where he stood. The other boys fled in a panic. Annalyn found her son straddled across the bully with a maddening gaze in his eye. She pulled her son of the other older boy, and dismissed him with a wave of her hand, before she confronted her son.
She doctored Talby as best she could, but the accident left his forearms and half of his face bleached nearly white. Scaring and disfiguring him for life.
When Talby's father came home, the altercation was explained as a simple fight that resulted in an accident, with no mention of the use of arcane arts by Talby. Bydern insisted that Talby pick up a blade and tried to instruct the boy in its use. Talby played along whenever his father was in, not wanting to incur his wraith. His interest had been peeked instead, by the events of the altercation, and he began to delve into tombs of arcane study, which his mother had hid from his father.
It was Talby's sixteenth summer when his father never returned. His mother took the disappearance hard, and the following year Talberon Toil set out on his own, with his meager spell book and one of his father's swords…

Edit: I have changed my profile from John Doe 498 to The Bane... I finally got ten posts here so it finally let me.
Edit 2: Found the dice format, now to try it out...

At the bottom when you post, click the [Show] next to the "How to format your text"
It basically is the following, but with square [ ] brackets instead of round { } brackets: {dice}1d20+2{/dice}
Hope that makes sense Varrian...

The Bane |

I have never been in a pbp. Are there any special rule on when, how many times, how often, etc... to post? How in depth do the posts need to be and anything else? Thanks for any assistance.
I can't speak directly for Tippo Dakar (DM) but I do recall that it was requested to do daily posts with the DM NPCing the character to move things along should you not reply after a couple days.
Some standard rules, that I am sure Tippo will address, are; tense and person that posts should be made in, ie: first person past tense, third person present tense, etc. Syntax for speech and thought, and the ever popular - don't control someone else's character, ie: don't speak or act for them.
As for me personally, my posts very depending on time constraints, actions, etc. I usually try to put as much detail as I can into a post through the five senses...
Possible Example of what I might post:
------------------------------------
The Bane knocked an arrow to the string of his shortbow as he watched the Goblins charge from the far door. A small bead of sweet trickled down the side of his face, between his ear and eye, and dropped quietly on his dark tunic, causing a dark spot of moisture to appear where it landed.
'Mother would not approve of the current company I am keeping,' he thought as he raised the bow and pulled back on the string. The arms of the bow struggled against his strength and bit into his fingers through the string as the bow came to full draw.
'Thwang' went the string with the release, the arrow darting across the expanse of the room, on a collision course with the lead Goblin.
"For Aleria!" he screamed as he pulled another arrow from his quiver and brought it down to knock it...
OOC: To Hit and Damage Roll follows.
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 91d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
------------------------------------
Just a quick post of something I might write in a combat round with some of the syntax/formating that might be required by the DM as an example. OOC being Out Of Character and might be required in a [spoiler] tag. I also always try to start my posts, whatever tense/person is required, with the character's name. I find it helps to quickly associate the action with the character and not with the player. I also try to alude to what my next action is going to be. In this example, another bow shot, so the DM can NPC me should real life rear its ugly head. But again, the DM will probably explain how they want it all formatted...
Best,
The Bane

![]() |

I agree with PH. Trapper, the best route to go would be point black shot, weapon focus(crossbow), and then precise shot.
Trapper's Feat = point blank shot
What is weapon focus?
Is that the same as weapon proficiency in BLOCK E, or is it the weapon you choose in BLOCK G (referring to the character sheets in the BB).
Everyone has great backgrounds. I am really impressed with the in depth information.
I agree. It's a blast to read these.
Pathfinder's Inner Sea is a very rich setting, which makes it easy and fun to develop characters.
Talberon Toil |

Hmmm, I seldom read other's backgrounds before a PbP game unless someone wants to tie characters together before play begins, figuring it is more fun to discover the other characters through play, but I may have to break my rule this once with all the comments on background write-ups...
Specially since I am starting to wonder if mines falls short in comparison.
Best,
The Bane

Gozer "Bone Splitter" |

Tal I think your background is rich and informative. I especially enjoyed the story behind his scarred visage. I always did like adding physical characteristics that stand out and help bring a character to life.
Thank you Tal for the example, very informative and helpful. I am not sure if I will be able to pull that off at first but I will work on it.
I see what you mean by the different formatting. For example the bold for talking, the italicized for thought, and the regular for action, along with the ooc for out of character. I haven't tried the spoiler tag yet i'll have to later.
