Background

Maya is a young woman who grew up as a weaver in the war torn River Kingdoms. One fateful day when she was 14 her village was conquered by a neighbouring lord. The attack was led by band of seasoned mercenaries called the Bloodravens that the lord had hired to aid his banner men. The captain of the Bloodravens was a man named Frandor Harlech. Frandor originally hailed from the far away town of Sandpoint. Since Maya was attractive, and he was a decent man, he took her as his wife in order to spare her from being raped by his men. For the next couple of years she travelled with him and his company. He taught her to wield a sword, and she proved to be a natural, demonstrating skill but also uncanny strength for a slender young woman.

When she was 17, Frandor was badly wounded in battle. Afterwards he decided to take the money he had earned over his years as a mercenary captain and move back to Sandpoint to retire. Maya moved with him, and she and her husband spent a year in Sandpoint. Frandor used his money to purchase a home on the outskirts of town. One dark night in the middle of the winter their home was attacked by a particularly blood thirsty band of goblins. Frandor and Maya did their best to fend them off, but Frandor died in the skirmish, leaving Maya a young, childless widow.

Maya has since buried her husband and taken up her blade. She intends to use her martial skills to gain experience, build a reputation for herself, and eventually return to the Riverlands to rejoin the Bloodravens.

Maya hasn't been living in Sandpoint long enough to really consider it her home yet. She still thinks of the River Kingdoms as her home, and she still has family in the village where she grew up, though it is now ruled by a new lord (thanks to Frandor and the Bloodravens). Her years of travel at her husband's side have instilled a lust for adventure in her, and she has no interest in becoming a home maker or going back to being a weaver.

For now she is content to adventure within the Sandpoint region, but as she gains experience she will want to travel further afield and see more of the world. One of her primary goals right now is to have her revenge on the goblin tribe that killed her husband, even though part of her is secretly grateful that he is dead. She cared for him, but he was much older than her, and she never truly loved him. Furthermore, she wasn't interested in settling down and starting a family. She had come to enjoy the mercenary life, and was eager to continue to live as warrior. With his death has come freedom. The freedom to make her own way in life with no pressures or expectations from family.

She keeps her husband's sword, armour and shield on display in her home in his memory. The weapons that she carries are ones that he had forged for her during their time with the Bloodravens. They hold sentimental value to her as well, and she still wears her Bloodraven tabard over top of her armour. Her shield also bears the insignia of the mercenary company.

Personality: Maya is an optimistic individual who values personal freedom. She is courageous and a risk taker. Consquently, she will happily throw herself into battle perhaps partly because she thinks she has something to prove in a world where female warriors are relatively rare.

Her experience with the supernatural is quite limited, so whether her courage holds up against some of the more terrible things the world has to offer remains to be seen. Varisia is a foreign land to her, but she likes its frontier mindset, and thinks she will fit in well- at least until such a time that she returns to the River Kingdoms to seek out the Bloodravens and become their commander or perhaps form her own mercenary company.
