The dragon’s attempt to mollify the treant diverts the direlock momentarily before Sir Jack transforms into an avatar of carnage. Errisaigh follows suit, his raiment radiating hopelessness and horror as his fearsome flail shining with dark promise strikes toward the treant in two swift arcs.

Swift Action Activate Inimica: Weakened Resolve.

Weakened Resolve:

Oh. I hadn’t thought of surprise/initiative. As for proximity, I understood us to be fairly close given the treants just stepped out of the trees to our left. I guess they could be any distance from us though...

No idea. I'll let Shadow sort that out. If Jack doesn't get initiative on the Treant, that post can be my round one action.

Oh, in case it matters for Errisaigh's abilities, if I get within 10 feet of the treant it takes a -4 to any fear related saves.

Seeing three of his companions making for the largest foe, Havelyn turns his attention to one of its fellows. He strikes one gauntlet against his shield, letting a dull, ominous clang ring out, iron on iron. "Let us see what mettle you have!" So crying, he launches forward, bringing the shield to bear and slamming it forward toward the treant.

Swift action to issue a guardian's challenge; the treant has a -3 to attacks against anyone other than Havelyn, but gains a +2 bonus to attacks that target only him. Then charging as a full action, using Power Attack and getting a +1 to attack and damage from his Sentinel ability.

Additionally, if the treant does attack Havelyn, he'll use his active defense to increase his AC by +3, making it 29; he can do this up to 4 times, since they cost attacks of opportunity to use. Any misses provoke free shield bashes but I can roll those after the fact, just let me know how many.

Alice casts a spell that may well turn the tide of battle.

Havelyn meanwhile charges at one of the flanking Treants and strikes it, just missing a vital root, splitting a sizeable lower limb from its trunk.

The tree remains silent and swings back at the Fallen Knight, the first blow lands solid but the second misses, freeing up a counter strike opportunity!

Havelyn, take 14 damage and take that free shield bash.

Meanwhile, the second guardian stalks towards Grumble and rains a series of blows upon him, both hitting the mark. Finally, opponents worthy of the Ogres' rage!

Grumble, take 31 damage.

Aurex roars tearing into the Treant, its tough hide though is formidable! His bite manages to penetrate the steel like bark of the creature causing the creature to rustle in pain as the Dragon feels sap on his lips.

Nathaniel fires an arrow at the treant who brushes it aside as if a fallen stick from its own substantial girth.

Errisaigh's abilities force the treant to turn to the warrior whose flail puts sizeable dents into the trunk of the treant.

Despite the injuries, the treant elder stands stalwart, "Death before I let another living thing enter this unholy place, die foul creatures!" The treant slams both the Direlock and the Dragon with its massive fists.

Berserk soaks 8 HP again. Took 18 real damage. Down to 12 before I dip into my Deathless (negative) HP. With how hard these trees hit I'm getting a little worried.

Using an Immediate action when the lead treant falls to activate Savage and regain my Martial Focus.

Grumble was battered but refused to flag. He rounded on the treant that had just struck him and threw himself at his foe with unbridled savagery.

With a sound of serpentine pleasure, the cacodaemon sucked out Jurak's soul.

Into the Wilderness - Battle

Errisaigh presses the attack against the already severely damaged guardian treant. Like its Elder, it too falls.

The rest of the group then focus their efforts on the lone forest defender, claw, fire and ogre rage stagger the creature but do not lay it low.

It speaks, "Your own souls are forfeit entering this place!"

Havelyn brings his weapon to bear against the last defender.

Full Attack 1: 1d20 + 10 + 1 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 10 + 1 + 1 - 2 = 18

Damage: 2d6 + 6 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (1, 1) + 6 + 6 + 1 = 15

Still, it manages to keep its "trunk" and swing attempt a last desperate stand!

It swings its mighty fists at Grumble who dealt it the most damage.

tSH ONLY:
Treant vs. Grumble Slam 1 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (18) + 17 = 35 Damage 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (4, 5) + 9 = 18 - Slam 2 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (10) + 17 = 27 Damage 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (3, 4) + 9 = 16
Treant HP = 14/115

Both fists hammer blow Grumble and bring him low! Let's see if I dd the calculation correctly, Grumble takes 26-8=18 bringing him to -6 HP.

Yup. I'm not down though. I have Deathless (which functions like Diehard when I have Martial Focus). So I'm Disabled, but not down.

Grumblejack was too stupid and too stubborn to fall over. He was slower, and his breathing was ragged, but he kept swinging.

Holy shite, 113 is awesome! I want to be an ogre too. Though I think that is an attack roll of 28, and damage of 28. Is it still alive?

Grumble gives back as good as he gets it and snaps the trunk of the, now formerly, living tree.

Combat Over!

I will give Grumble the full 9 HP back from that Cure Light as combat is done putting him at 2 HP.

The forest goes quiet with the death of the Guardians. Now, nothing stands in the way of the Ninth Knot from reaching their objective.

Soren and Morana shift back towards the combat having been on the lookout to make sure no more of these living trees come from the forest to over run the group.

Soren grimaces, "If this is what faces us, we will need someone skilled in the healing arts to assist with the assault. Perhaps Morana and I should head back and see if the other Knot can spare just such a useful tool?"

Oh goddamnit. Sorry about the roll botch there. It was supposed to be 1d20+14 (rolled a 14, result 28), and 2d8+17 damage (I think the result was 23. Don't remember now)

Grumble huffed in ragged anger and brought his axe down on his fallen enemy one last time just to vent. Then he gave Nate a nod that looked something like a bull that had just tossed an unwanted rider. As far as gestures of ogre appreciation went, it was a pretty good one.

"Stupid trees," he growled.

He wouldn't say so, but it was clear he was in no condition for another fight.

Actually if the fight was over Nate wouldn't have gone over to heal him, but Aurex will growl and force him to :)

Once Aurex pressures Nate into getting Grumble off the edge of death, the dragon huffs with a look at the infernal ogre. His strength surpasses even mine. I must be careful to not betray him without an advantage. Like Grumblejack, Aurex is exhausted and leans against the largest treant corpse. "We need healing before continuing." He growls over the group.

Nate only has 1 more 1st level bard spell left, and I would prefer to save that for feather fall if I need it.

Soren nods, "rest here then and we shall return". Soren and Morana head back towards the city.

The entrance, obscured by natural vegetative impediments, must be close by...

Errisaigh nods as Soren takes her leave, then leans on his flail and breathes hard. Mopping sweat from his brow he assesses his companions.

They fight well, if a little unruly. Then again, I'm not the deftest of touches...

The direlock looks into the verdant underbrush, a creased brow betraying his distrust of the environment.

"Every tree could be one of these things." he mutters.

Is it possible for Alice to check out the treants? See if any of their parts can be harvested for magical creations?

At Last - The Horn of Abaddon!

Alice, assume that you are able to take what you wish, we can figure out the details later.

After an uneventful night though nerve wracking in that any tree could be another lurking foe, a man steps through the underbrush. In his hand he holds two wand cases. He nods to the collective party, "Greetings, I am Brian. I have been asked to assist you all in recapturing the Horn. I have with me two wands, one a traditional gift to cure wounds Cure Moderate (40) Charges and one gifted by the Dark Father Wand of Infernal Healing.

I was told that below this Horn are caves. There may be some way to gain entry there if this way is blocked.

Lead on my new companions..."

The entranceway looms before the group. The area is silent as a tomb. Grumble pushes away some debris used to obscure the entrance, clearly placed there by these now fallen trees based on how heavy the rocks were. Unfortunately, the door is not right here as the entranceway leads to a set of stairs up the side of the mountain.

Ascend these stairs or look for a way in below?

Aurex will need 5 charges from the infernal healing wand.

I say we try the stairs first, I'd hate to go looking around for a secret entrance if the front door is unlocked.

Grumble needs 6 charges from the infernal wand. We're going to burn through this thing fast.

Grumble gave some serious thought to killing Brian on the spot. He didnt like random nobodies showing up out of nowhere and knowing their plans. Besides, they really only needed the wands. After a brief internal struggle the ogre snorted and said "Heal me then."

Once the wand had done it's work, Grumblejack started stomping his way up the stairs.
