Weapons may have deadly or hideous effects, but they acquire moral character from the actions of those who use them. Whereas these projects are indelibly stained by a patina of ancient evil...
I *love* Stross!
I hadn't heard of Gorey, I'll have to look him up. I have a copy of Asylum too, if you like that aesthetic then you might also like Broken Spirits, another coffee table book featuring still life photography arrangements of various dead, broken, or discarded things.

DM Downrightamazed |

@Loimprevisto: Edward Gorey's stuff can be whimsical or willful sometimes, but works like "The West Wing" are loaded with weird existential dread. In his abecadarium, "The Gashlycrumb Tinies", he uses the 26 letters of the alphabet to come up with 26 ways to...well, but you'll see.
@Deis Irae: Those photo galleries were great! Right up my alley, you were correct.

@Khaladon: I don't mind talking about the IRL campaigns, that's cool. :-) The third campaign hasn't affected anyone else too much yet. It's a low-level, beginner's game I'm running for a friend and his two kids, who are like 9 and 11. Mercy (my best half) also plays to round out the party. It's very interesting running a campaign for young kids.
Rhon and Eru have been NPCs from the word go, although Rhon is close friends (since childhood) with Minathiel (a PC), whom the Skyknights met in the jungles south of Hallas, and Eru looks up to Mina as the ideal princess-type she wants to be; out adventuring with friends instead of being all but cloistered in the city of her birth, even if that city is a metropolis like Mamban. A conversation with Nurianna (also a PC) inspired Eru to follow her path of becoming a paladin (or cleric, she's still not sure) of Sarenrae.

Aahhh, thanks. And cool! That's around the same age I first started with D&D i think. Brings back memories that does! What part of the Land are they running about in? And what kind of PCs did the kids pick?

Ok, I've been reading through the book and trying to figure out how to make my concepts work. I'm still fuzzy on the numbers but in terms of concept I have some thoughts.
On the right side of page 27 of the core book it talks about a project in development to make self-willed, trained Engels. What if I was a prototype of that concept. A human sized Engel, made that size for ease of training and control, successfully raised to fight on our side. The next phase of the experiment is ready to go, but they were at a loss as to what to do with me.
Turns out, a human sized Engel might be a natural Tager, and would probably make one hell of an Engel pilot.
The problem is, I'd need your help to come up with a "race" template. I have no idea how to build something like this.
If you think the concept wont work, then I'll go with my Whatley Wizard idea.

Chainmail |

I have read the quickstart guide and it seems to raise more questions than it answers. I know I want a parapsychic Nazzadi with the Nightmare Tager souped up to scare and intimidate -- I know I want to carry a cool hologram-computer generated metal type picture that has my Nazaddi with various aspects from Nazaddi to hybrid to tager form to help trigger his transformation.
I wanted to make a physically weak character with no physical skills but a solid ranged weapon and massive occult/arcanotech skills. He was to be an occult badass who had to step over to the bad side a little to save the world. Harry Dresden meets the wolfman. When pushed he changed into the Nightmare--the name says pretty much says it all.
Anyway, if everyone else is good to go--maybe you go without me. The game system is somewhat intimidating.

Sorry, Christmas and New Years got kinda hectic. I'm interested, but I'm thinking I don't have enough time to learn a new rules set unfortunately, as much as i like the sound of it.
Have fun with this one guys, It looks like a really nice system.
Bummer, man, but I of course understand. Feel free to check in on us and hang out; I've been following your game and like your style. ^_^

DM Downrightamazed |

Baby step here. I just picked up the book a few days ago. What scale is Behemoth? Is there a chart somewhere?
I dunno off the top of my head where a chart may be, but I do know that if you look at the little mecha data sheets that start on page 150 (I think), in the "group shots" of all the mecha (or engels or tagers, etc.) in a group, they usually have a little outline of a human next to the pics of the mecha to give you an idea of scale. I don't have my book handy right now, but when I get home tomorrow I'll try to find something more precise for you, unless someone else comes up with a size chart before then.

Totally your call, sir, though I'm willing to start with the others and then let you do a delayed entry if you want. I think we could make your idea work, the only part I'm really having trouble with is that in order to be a Tager you kind of have to have some solid physical skills and attributes just to be able to use that side of yourself. Tagers (as I understand them) are mostly built for up-close combat and intimidation, scouting, etc., and as such work best with a decently physical build.
Maybe, since we're starting at first level and this will be a long campaign, you start by focusing on the tager or occult or arcanotech aspect, and then add the others as you gain experience? That way we can watch the transformation and you can RP it out, and when you have enough juice as a PC, you can unload from the perspective of having to have done "very bad things" in order to pull through. Something to think about, and something that would make your build easier to get going. :-)

DM Downrightamazed |

Okay! So. So far, ioemprevisto, havoc/cyra, corerue, and Dies Irae are all in. I'm willing to take two more, even if it means a late entry. So Chainmail, Doomed Hero, and Khaladon, please keep working up your concepts. I have no problem at all introducing you in another few days or a week or however long it takes for you to get your concept solid. In the meantime I have a good crew ready to go, so I'm going to get them started.
ioemprevisto: I didn't see a name for your PC. Did I just miss it, or had you not picked one yet?

Kyra codename Viper XIII wrote:I want to use my kendo cascade style I'm liking the three action moves. Happy I am.Even with the -4 that applies to all your tests? (Page 117, under Declare Combat Actions) ;-)
To execute your Cascade attack, engage in a Combat Contest, but use the listed Multiple Action Penalty instead of the usual
-2 for each Action (for two Action turns) or -4 for each Action (for three Action turns). If you successfully hit your opponent, you will determine your damage using the damage of the specifc move as opposed to the normal damage for hand or fst, or a modifed amount of damage in the case of weapon styles. Many moves also have special effects that accompany them and those rules are explained under each Cascade. The main advantage, beside the specialized fghting moves, is that by going with a Cascade, you essentially eliminate one Ac- tion’s worth of Penalties. If you are taking three Actions, you only suffer a total penalty of -8 across all Actions instead of the usual -12 (-4 for each of the Actions). If you are taking two Ac- tions, you only suffer a total penalty of -2 to all Actions instead of the usual -4 (-2 for each of the Actions).

Okay, so, I lied; both the OOC and gameplay threads are up, lemme know if you can't see the tabs, but they should all be linked to this recruitment thread. Those of you I've already selected, hop on in and start posting as soon as you feel ready. Let's have fun and tell an awesome story together! ^_^

OK, I can't take it, if I don't put in the effort and come up with a character for this I'm going to be kicking myself for months, this is too good an opportunity to pass up.
I'm thinking of going down the Tager route, but starting out as an initiate in the Eldritch society. If you're happy for me to write up my character concept first, and then fill in the character sheet as I have time to absorb the rules I can do that.

Good to have you aboard.
Personally, if you're intimidated by the Framewerk rule-set, I pretty much recommend reading or re-reading the Quickstart Rules again, looking up the sample characters and reverse engineering from there.
The Quickstart features sample characters utilizing all four of the Core Rulebook Tagers and as long as you stay at a Vitality (i.e. Non-Vehicle/Mecha scale), the 14 pages of condensed rules are a really good reference.

Sure, that's fine. I think we'll all still be absorbing bits and pieces of the rules, so we can help each other out. ^_^ Fire away!
With DM Downrightamazed's approval I'm thinking of spinning a character background that would need to RP out the rite of sacred union.
Sure, we can do that. Look forward to seeing the character concept!

Devereux Atkinson |

OK, (this is caffeine_addict) I think I've got the basic background sorted for him. I'm thinking I'll leave the Eldritch Society approaching him up to DM Downrightamazed if I'm accepted. I've taken the Asset Ally, which you can use, and we can RP out my integration into the secret society.
I'm still working through the rules, I've got some basic stats blocked out, I'm working on creating a soldier, sorting out skills and equipement of course is to come.
What are your thoughts, points I can improve on, expand on, etc? I've tried to work it into the framework of the story, including the timeline as best I can, there's a lot there, but I think it fits.

Devereux Atkinson |

'...And so, I am asking you to cease the fighting, think through these words I have spoken and ask yourselves, ask ourselves, who are we really.'
With the words of Field Marshal Vreta ringing in his ears, Devereux's whole world came crashing down, his beliefs, his honour at fighting for his god, everything he had ever been taught was a lie. Before, he had been the commander of his own unit, a loyal member of the military, had been awarded a medal of bravery for his role in exterminating the human pests. Now, he was just a copy of the creatures he fought to destroy, created by an alien race to do their dirty work, everything he had fought for was for naught.
For the next week he went through the motions along with the rest of his unit, and then Field Marshall Kyrsa replied and it was if a dam broke, all the pent up emotions broke free. He broadcast too his command that they were a free people, those who weren't with him were against him. Half his unit came forwards, the other half turned on them. The insuing battle was brief and bloody, he was the only survivor, left lying in a pool of his, and his friends blood, before finally passing out...
20 Years later.
Devereux has picked up the pieces of his life, and even though he still suffers from depression, the original feelings of betrayel burning strong in him, the faces of those he was forced to kill forever in his mind, he has reforged himself a place in the NEG Army, taking the fight to his allies enemies, working towards the day he can oneday take revenge on those who created him.
Devereux stands 5'11", and has bought fully into the custom of his people of expressing themselves through their tattoes. His skin is covered with intricate white lines, each representing a friend or family member who has died in the never ending war, each marking that is added feeding fuel to the ever burning flame of vengance inside him. His is bald, with a square jaw. But what nobody sees are the scars, his chest is covered in the remnants of that fight all those years ago, and he has a slight pained look everytime he breathes in. His clothes are neatly pressed, and he carries himself with an air of authority.
Despite loosing everything, who is has stayed the same, his strong sense of loyalty, his sense of duty, and his passionate defense of those he cares about. But through all this he feels empty inside, prone to bouts of depression and anger.
The fight all those years ago left more then just emotional scars, his insides took extensive treatment to patch together, and he is in constant pain, which is managed, but never gone.

Doomed Hero |

Real life is seriously cramping my style right now. I've been making little dents here and there in tackling learning a new system, but time constraints are making it very hard.
I'm still interested in playing, but I'm afraid I'm going to take a while getting my character done. Can I join the game late? Maybe in a week or two?
