Kyra is also set up to where he's not useless outside of Leviathan. He's handy with a blade. Using the cascade fighting style for kendo.

Very nice. =) Vade Mecum is a neat book. :)

Its neat reading over these books again and getting myself back upto speed. It's also fun building a character for a different system, keeps things fresh you know?

The cascades though are really neat, i'm still trying to make sure all my stuff is legit but I took the Handgun fighting style and stuck with the standard issue firearms the military provides.

I went with the civil defense militia partly as a concession to genre. If the game comes to a point where we all need to work together on the battlefield, I could see my character in a Crusader escorting civilians to safety or holding a last-line of defense (or possibly in a Saber doing spy stuff, but that seems a bit unlikely). I also took a proficiency in drone piloting. I figured that mostly applies to surveillance drones, but the military may have armed drones as well.

@DRA: I'll have an IC post ready in the next day or two. Dies Irae set a high bar, I'll have to think about this... :)

Just bought the book today. I'm reading as fast as I can to try to figure out the system.

Expect a rough character build tomorrow night and polish to come by the end of the weekend.

Sorry I'm dragging behind.

@Doomed hero: No worries man! No need to apologize either. =D Take your time and rock that character out at your pace, besides DRA I am sure isn't in a super rush. I shouldn't speak for him, but he is a cool guy and he'd rather you have fun making your character and not feel rushed.

I'm looking forward to what you come up with!

Your gonna be the safest guy amongst us, you'll be at your house sipping on your coffee as you fly your drone in to support us. When your drone gets shot down you'll just seend the next one. XD

Is the Akira ZX available? It does say as middle class we have access to a personal transportation. The bike fits Kyra's cocky self-confident attitude.

Edit: The safe thing is definitely true seeing as I am asking about a bike that goes 180mph...

Edit 2: Profile is up history and personality not up.

Nice profile. :)

Mine is wayyyyy to detailed but that was only because I will forget half of the extra notes about the various specifics.

I need to grab another couple pieces of equipment but for the most part my char is complete I just got to put the associated stat with my skills. Thanks for the reminder Havok!

Also I would assume that you'd own a resident and a form of transportation, so if you rather own a motor cycle instead of a car. Then I think it would be plausible. ;)

Famous Incident (1)
"Though a hero among the NEG Infantry for his daredevil driving and willingness to enter "hot" LZs to drop off reinforcements or evacuate isolated infantry squads..."
Can't be a hero without a "Famous Incident" to go along with it can you?

Ally (2)
The Ranger is statted out as requiring a 2 man crew. Turret Gunner is a thankless position and frankly, having done time as a vehicle MG gunner, if I didn't have some degree of intrinsic trust in the driver's ability not to get us both killed, I would probably have asked for a transfer. Taking my Turret Gunner as my Ally to represent that trust. Approve?

Dark Secret (-1)
The military assessors would likely have failed him out of basic military training entirely without some palms being greased along the way. He's a good tanker, but he never wouldn't have gotten the chance if he hadn't first bribed his way into an aptitude test. Not exactly the end of the world if the truth got out, but many would probably frown on the act on principle.

Short [Skinny Flaw] (-2)
Didn't find a "Short" flaw. Reskinned Skinny as Short. Approve?

Most traits are angled towards staying in line with the Chang being a wiry little Asian salary-man. (I reserve the right to laugh at people of my own nationality and race.) Both Ineptitudes are to keep in line with the whole idea that Winston couldn't punch his way out of a paper bag, which is why he failed his Infantry and Mech qualifiers. Most of the other traits such as the University Degree and Business Skills are to reflect his history as a corporate desk jockey.

That Ap Cannon is a cool idea Kyra, I may steal it as well since I can't find a different suitable weapon. The lightning gun seemed cool but unreliable. :P

Also don't forget to add your Nightvision to your sheet as Nazzadi natural have Nightvision. =D

Nice Character so far Winston!

I thought it would be q bit much to use the linked laser cannons for small targets. So a hand-held assault rifle seemed perfect for those occasions. And I will be sure to add my nightvision to the sheet.

Just wanted to out an Easter egg in. The artstyle Kyra uses is a manga/graphic novel style. He is working on a series called The Legacy of Marianasu: Tales of the Skyknights.

Yep I'm a nerd due to this rp I have changed my phones alert to the gundam radar alert...

lmao...

Yeah, if you want to see nerdy look what I did to my character sheet. I added a residence! I also copied some of your sheet to make mine a little cleaner~ Thanks Kyra/Havoc.

Also if we get selected maybe you could be my ~Rival~ from my Drawbacks, since we both fly behemoth Engel's and yada yada.

It would make a neat RP~

I need to get some ringtones for my phone :(

And yes before anyone says it, the stuff I added to the sheet is over the top. But I had to try and follow my assets and it just kinda spilled out, I was also really REALLY bored as everyone in my house is sick and I had nothing better to do.....

Funny I was actually thinking about that. In a friendly sort of way, like challenging Alastair to sparring matches since they both carry a sword and tracking kills against one another. And Kyra definitely fits the less resources part since your a billionaire.

@Havok: It would be awesome! =)

@ Havok: Ambidextrous (2)
Ambidextrous Characters do not favor one hand over the other
and can use either equally well. This eliminates the Off-Hand
Test Penalty for using two weapons if the Character has an Agility
of only six or seven.

I thought since you had an Agility of 8 - you could find another Asset you could grab for equal points. Just a suggestion.

Also as an Engel Pilot this is a requirement.
Required Qualities: Authority (3), Duty (3), Engel Synthesis Interface
(1)

You could trade out Ambidextrous for the Authority (3) and have an extra skill point~ ^^

Please let me know if you see anything I can improve upon as well. Not trying to be an a** so please forgive me. ^^;

There now have authority and rival so it matches up now.

heheh nice, =)

Glad I could help some and now you have even more points! >.<;

It is definitely interesting learning a new system. I like how there isn't any level per say, but you use experiance to level up skills and such. It really neat. =)

Hmm what to do eith my extra point thought about bumping observation up one but since I'll be using Zero's(yes I changed my Chasmal's name after seeing its an enemy Mecha type bonus if you guess where I got the name from) radars and scanners.

Sounds good! I won't be making any final party decisions until the weekend, so you have some time to work with. And thanks for taking the time to do an IC post, I appreciate it! It helps me out a lot.

Kyra codename Viper XIII wrote:
So I'm trying to figure one thing out. Ranges are written in what distance. Like the laser cannons is that 30 yards/feet/miles what? I'm thinking either yards or feet.

I've found that both ranges and bonuses are a bit inconsistent, so it's something to watch out for. As a rule of thumb, ranges are yards, as Corerue pointed out, and bonuses are measured in dice. So if you have +2 armor, it means you roll 2d10 and subtract that much from the damage you would have otherwise taken, likewise a +2 firearm adds 2d10 to the damage you do, etc.

Again, though, this is just a rule of thumb, and there are definitely exceptions, so if there's ever any doubt, be sure to bring it up.

No worries! Like I said, I won't be making any final decisions or starting things up until this weekend, so you've got some time to work with. And Corerue is right in that I'd rather you have a chance to build something you love than rush ahead to meet an artificial deadline. :-)

Absolutely. I assume you'll give him/her at least a name and callsign? I have no problem with you writing for both of them IC if you want, and just treating the gunner like a "follower" in the PFR system, or some other kind of mostly-there-for-fluff NPC. Conversely, if that's too much of a hassle, I have no problem hand-waving it and just writing him/her strictly as a rare story point. You mind if we up the ante just a little bit? I'd like to make the person he bribed have influence and connections to certain Dark Forces. @Alastair: Holy crap, you're huge! 0_0 It's fine, it just took me by surprise. Man it'd be interesting for Alastair to meet Winston. ;-)

As for your question:
I have no problem with him being rich, the drawbacks you took and the background will help balance it all out. That's pretty gutsy taking a 4-point quality! I love it!

Lots of posting going on, so here's another reminder of my adjustments to character building rules:

1. Point buy for Attributes is 38 as opposed to the 35 listed in RAW.
2. In addition to the couple of free skills every character already gets, you also get Hobby at the Student level and one Combat skill of your choice at the Student level for free.

Still hate the avatar but at least its head kinda looks like my chasmal.

EDIT I hope we get picked. I've wanted to play in a mech game since oh...for freaking ever!

Indeed! I don't know how well they will get along but it would be interesting! I have tried to avoid reading anything more then stats but I am really enjoying it so far and look forward to seeing doomed hero, Addict and...

Yeah, I tried to dumb it down (although it doesn't look like I did) but I found it hard to condense it any further, I will continue to refine it as I go along. xD

Now besides the main book (and Possibly Vade Mecum) what other material do you use DRA?

DRA:

I mainly took it as a way to explain his being a part of the Scions of Forever, he's been around for close to or over a millennia, that's a long time to watch how the world works and learn to adapt. Granted he has had to adapt again and again, losing what skills he attained as times continued to change around him. No matter how often

He also sees his existence as a mistake still, Brid instilled that in him a long time ago. I left the nightmare of his death upto you if he is selected, I had envisioned it to have something to do with the Migou. Hence why he fights them so hard and why he aims all his strength directly at them.

But I look forward to how this all ends. I'm glad you enjoyed and sorry for the length. lol =)

Utilizing my patented Flip-Coin-For-Character-Gender technique...

Pvt. Chelsea "Airfix" Scarlett
Before the war, Chelsea Scarlett used to make her living in the advertising industy as a promotional model. Finding the work unfulfilling in the least, Chelsea, like many others was swept up in the glamour of enlistment at the declaration of the 2nd Aeon War and enlisted with the NEG Mech Corps, hoping she would never have to model again.

To her horror, the past has a way of catching up with you. Never quite able to escape untoward attention from those she served alongside, even her callsign of 'Airfix' was a subtle jab at her civilian record by a spurned officer. After finally choosing to forcefully refuse his advances, Chelsea was convicted of assault, the court preferring her superior's version of events.

The sheer pragmatism necessitated by war left the NEG unwilling to simply wash a trained asset out of service. Instead, demoted and reassigned to armor corp as punishment, Chelsea was bounced from unit to unit, unable or unwilling to fit in.

Assignment to the 172nd Armored Cavalry was Airfix's last chance.

When she first arrived, she wasn't quite sure what to make of her driver; the perpetually polite little Chinese man a good fifteen years her senior with eyes that spoke of loss and pain. Thrown together by their shared outsider status, Gatecrash and Airfix have worked in tandem for the last five or so years.

Over time, the stocky Asian has begun to display an almost paternal affection for her, fussing over her accomplishments like a proud parent would over their own child. Though she finds this displaced concern overbearing on occasion, Chelsea has, over the years, begun to warm to this treatment, reciprocating by treating Gatecrash like one would a close uncle.

In combat, Airfix prefers a measured approach, picking a target and then methodically dismantling it with laser and rail-gun fire, a style reminiscent of her duelist approach to mecha combat and one rarely consistent with Gatecrash's seat-of-the-pants driving. Though the two have argued on this to an impasse on more than one occasion, their "I don't tell you how to shoot" and "I don't tell you how to drive" agreement has worked out satisfactorily for the most part.

SUBJECT: PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE OF PATIENT #1276B

VITAL INFORMATION
Patient presents as a 65 year old male human. Bioscans have confirmed humanity to 99.999% likelihood. Note that patient's chronological age is 71, he does not appear to have aged since his disappearance in 2177. Elevated levels of stress hormones and neurotransmitter re-uptake activity are consistent with recent exposure to physiological and psychological trauma.

{ATTACHMENTS: Initial neurological workup and bioscan, comparative DNA profile}

BACKGROUND
Patient was found within the containment perimeter around The Zone and apprehended by the 181st Mechanized Regiment. Initial interrogation ███████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████ ███████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████ ███████████████████████████████ non-responsive to arcanotherapy. Patient exhibited Class III catatonia for 107 hours after evaluation. Subsequently he was administered ██████████ and ████████████████ in accordance with the Czeny protocol and was declared lucid ██████████████. Initial psychological evaluation indicated profound memory loss and empathy scores barely within acceptable parameters. Patient had documented knowledge of first-order scrying magick and access to restricted occult texts as part of professional duties. No prior derangements were noted during routine psychological evaluations.

{ATTACHMENTS: GSA personnel file, initial psych workup}

DIAGNOSIS
Patient is highly-functioning with no disorders requiring continuing medication or priority therapy. Patient may be at greater risk for development of personality disorders if exposed to prolonged stress. There is a <2% chance that the patient will regain full use of his memories, although #1276B may be a good candidate for experimental arcanohypnotic therapies such as ████████████████████ or ████████████████.

{ATTACHMENTS: Current neurological workup and bioscan, current psych profile}

PROGNOSIS
Return to service with limited duties is recommended, along with continuing psychological evaluation. Patient reports physical discomfort that we have not been able to isolate or treat; a physical therapy referral is recommended although it is possible that the pain is psychosomatic in nature. Patient demonstrates sufficient physical and cognitive faculties for independent living and outpatient psychiatric care. Recommend reevaluation for return to full duties in 6 months.

Had a dream about Lynn and the kids. They were young, I think it was during the vacation to the Alps back in the '60s. We were tossing snowballs and laughing, Lynn was waring that puffy purple jacket and earmuffs like I saw in the photo album. God, I wish more of the dreams could be like that!

My knee was bothering me again during PT, I called it quits after 2 miles and told the boys I had to get to the office early. Swapped messages with Anna about the activity in Cordillera de Mahuidanchi, she thinks I might be onto something and passed it up to the imagery team. Shared a coffee with Ruth, we chatted about sports. I haven't followed football in 20 years, but I know enough to fake it- it just felt good to talk about something besides work.

No hits on the usual arcanotech datahavens, everything seems quiet... I'm not sure if we're actually making a difference in the cults or just driving them further underground. I have a persona going as a trust-fund U of H grad student whose clearance is taking a long time to process; "They won't give me access to the restricted texts in the library and my education is on-hold until the paperwork goes through, but I can pay well for early access from someone with copy to the uncensored texts..." too obvious?

...and a technical question, what is the role of the pilot skill in this game? Operator Extension Side Effect seems like it should be mostly unnecessary for single-pilot vehicles, but I saw that it is suppressed in commercial vehicles due to motion sickness among passengers. Is it only necessary for vehicles that are remotely piloted and those that have OESE suppressed, and perhaps the rare vehicle that isn't powered by a D-engine?

Pilot is for operating anything that isn't vaguely humanoid in appearance. Or for things that don't work for humanoids. Flying a mech/engel. Pilot. Landing an A-pod. Pilot. Etc..

Nice work, Ioimprevisto! Love it! I also particularly like the SCP-style text redaction/expunging you've got going on. Very rad!

caffeine_addict and chainmail, you guys all still interested? I know Doomed Hero has his core book and is working up a concept, but I wanted to check in with you guys as well. :-)

Does anyone know if the chasmal can stand upright? All the art I've seen so far suggests no, but I'd like a better idea. If he can't I can't use the hand-held ap cannon, since it requires two hands to use.

If it can't I have an idea for an alternative ap cannon or attach the RMG-10M. An anti mech rail gun that does hybrid damage.

SCP is spiffy, I'll have to read up on that site...

Thematically my biggest source of inspiration is the Laundry series by Charles Stross. Outside of Lovecraft, can anyone recommend fiction with a similar feel to CthulhuTech?

Oh, and it's "LOIMPREVISTO". The lowercase throws people off sometimes...

Well... it's more of a TO WATCH rather than to read list, but given that quite a bit of Cthulhutech was primarily drawn from a pastiche of Mecha anime/manga, I guess it's probably for the best to go watch/read Superdimensional Fortress Macross (Zentraedi / Nazzadi), Biobooster Armor Guyver (Guyver / Tager, Zoanoids / Dohanoids) and Neon Genesis Evangelion (EVA / Engel).

If facing a time shortage, I recommend watching Macross: Do You Remember Love, the first two Rebuild of Evangelion films and possibly Guyver: Out of Control (the live action film is horrible).

If we don't get a chance to enact THIS at least once, I will consider it a wasted opportunity.

That is funny! =) Which anime is that btw?

Macross : Frontier. Made a bit of a stir in 2007 in the Anime world when it was released. Recently cranked out a pair of brilliant 2 hour movies.

I enjoyed it thoroughly for it's Ender's Game vibe. And it's also what I end up drawing inspiration from whenever I imagine a Migou offensive.

The following clip is a bit more spoileriffic, and I don't recommend it for anyone who wants to take their own shot at enjoying the series, but it's another genre defining clip for me regarding a Migou infantry assault...

Spoiler:
The Death of Michael
At about the 3 min 18 sec point, several hastily suited up (and I mean hastily suited up - they're still wearing civvies under the exoframes) soldiers attempt to defend a military Macronization chamber (just go with the logic and treat the giant battlesuit pilot as fanservice) from an alien offensive leading to the death of a major series protagonist.

I recommend watching the entire 7 minute clip from start to finish however... It's one of the most raw and emotionally punishing moments from the entire anime series.

As for interacting with Alastair, it isn't like Vincent is all sunshine and roses either. :-P

I'm very familiar with the influences on the mech side of things, it's the sci-fi/horror part that doesn't seem to have any similar stories...

It's been a while since I re-watched Evangelion though, it's probably time for another viewing :D

Might I recommend Charlie Stross' novella A Colder War?

As for Evangelion, TV Series, Movie, Manga or Rebuild? :-P

The series!

Thanks for the link, that's a new one for me. I read the Jennifer Morgue last month and I've been meaning to catch up with his stories.

I'm not a fan, particularly, of horror per se, but I do dig the macabre and horrific and I tend to take a lot from China Mieville, Neil Gaiman, Edward Gorey, Alan Moore, and other sources that probably wouldn't generally be considered "horror" by most folks, but whose works tend often to have this incredible sense of...sacrifice for lack of a better word, everything is so very personal. Like, even though Gaiman's stories are often cute, he has a way of making the stakes for his protagonists seem very up-close, immediate, and terrifying. Mieville has a great touch for making physical deformities into cool assets and coming up with just the most horrid antagonists. From Moore and Gorey I like their sense of Megahorror and hopelessness, and the way they can put characters in situations where they're just completely effed and survival is their highest possible goal. I find it dovetails nicely with some of Lovecraft's grander arcs and ideas.

I also thoroughly enjoy perusing books of photos by urbexers and anyone else with access to modern-day ruins, abandoned buildings, wrecked urban areas, etc. I find looking at those pics gives me a slightly different angle of approach from which to find bits and bobs to employ. For example, this Christmas I received a book simply titles Asylum which is a coffee table book packed with monstrously beautiful photos of abandoned sanatoriums and mental hospitals all around the U.S. Love it. Fantastic source material. Also, a Taschen book on 20th century CCCP architecture. Amazing, amazing stuff. Really gets the imagination firing. :-)

Excellent!

Still VERY interested in this game but with other stuff going on haven't had time to even finish going through the quick-start guide yet alone buy and go through the Core book. If you're going to be making decisions by this weekend, I may just have to bow out. (on the plus side though, that would mean that I get to lurk and read everyone's spoilers! ^-^)

If selection might extend past the weekend though, I should have time to come up with something. Of course, knowing 'the hardest working DM in the business' as I do, there's a good chance he'll do something insane again and go with two (or more!) teams ; )

PS About Those Other IRL games in the Land you mentioned...:

If its none o' my bees wax, no worries, but now you have me curious. You said there where 3 IRL games. I know of the two groups the Marianau gang met-'Liberators of Manus' and the threesome they met in the jungle, but who's the third? Are Rhon and Eru in a IRL as well?

Figured you'd appreciate some of these shots then.

Lim Chu Kang Rural Centre
Lim Chu Kang is an old government housing estate which was re-purposed as a military FIBUA (Fighting In Built Up Area) training ground by the Singapore Armed Forces.
I trained there too. :-)

Old Changi Hospital
Short blurb located Here. Abandoned hospital located near my current place of work. Infamous reputation for being supposedly haunted.
