Kurasu attacks the tiefling. Fervor attack hits but she seems to have resisted all of the electricity damage and all of your damage physical. Her skin also seems to be stone like.
The first attack crits and she takes some of the damage.
The second, third and fourth attack all miss.
Human (yellow) 5 ft steps, does a swift action then full rounds Sol AC 31
Melee seven-branched sword ki attack: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17
Melee seven-branched sword haste attack: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
Melee seven-branched sword attack 1: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
Melee seven-branched sword attack 2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Miss
The crowd cheers as Kurasu crits the tiefling. It seems their attitude is picking up a little.
Up next, Sol!
Sol Drakescale |
Using blessing of fervor to gain an extra attack, power attacking.

Claw: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (6) + 18 = 242d6 + 17 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (4, 5) + 17 + (5) + (1) = 32

... 11 misses in a row. The ruby phoenix tournament is truly the pinnacle of martial skill. :D
Also updated stat bar at the top for raging and using a different blessing.
GM Deadly Secret |
Sol kills human (yellow) and the crowd boos again.
The tiefling with her hand glowing with a pale blue radiance tries to deliver it Touch AC 26+4
melee touch: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Miss
She puts her hands up and says, "We forfeit!"
Out of combat!
The monks usher you out of the fighting arena and they rush in to pick up the two dead men. The announcer begins to announce the next combatants.
You are informed to stay in the area, exhibitions will open up soon and you're welcome to enter. What would you like to do in the meantime?
Sol Drakescale |
I’m a bit confused. I missed last round with a 26, and the highest I rolled this round was a 24. I only continued to roll because I thought that my attacks were missing.
Sol Drakescale |
Sorry if this wasn't clear, I have the merciful enchantment on my natural weapons, meaning they do nonlethal damage. From my understanding of the rules he should not have died until he had taken damage equal to twice his health + constitution.
GM Deadly Secret |
Say sorry to the poor monk, not me lol
Feel free to do any healing or casting of spells. You are informed you will have your second match tomorrow. For now, would you like to participate in a breaking competition.
The Emissary’s monks need time to set up the elaborate fight stage between matches. He amuses the crowd during these intermissions by hosting tests of skill, strength, fortitude, and will.
In this challenge, items of various hardnesses are placed on stone pedestals positioned about the arena. Competitors must race about the ring, and using their bare hands, feet, and heads, smash as many of the objects as possible. Objects must be broken with a single attack, and objects that are damaged but not broken are replaced with new materials after each attempt. If a contestant fails to break an object, he takes damage instead.
Who wants to join? There are 8 items to break.
Radrick Anon |
The primary lack in my build is high damage. Breaking things is not my thing.... I'm more likely to break myself trying.
Kurasu |
Kurasu drops his stance as the opponents surrender, witnessing yet another mauled monk the Tengu thought; "Mental note to myself, never get on the bad side of Sol. Ever." , leaving the battlefield with an sympathetic nod towards the Tiefling.
After the match Kurasu checks his teammates for injuries and offers to lend Radrick who seems to be the only one physically harmed a healing hand.
Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 Spontaneously Casting instead of 1 Divine Favor
Knowing Sol most likely didn't intend to put the two monks out for good the Tengu would try to offer his teammate some consolation;
" Hey man, that didn't go quite as planned in there...but they knew the risk they were taking. I suppose the least we could do is to apologize to their companions later." Kurasu says with his most soothing tune he could muster.
"I would like to attend the breaking competition that is about to start, do you want to join with me to get some distraction or are you not in the mood?" the Tengu would ask Sol.
Kurasu would like to enter the breaking competition, the few moments in the spotlight being enough of an incentive for the attention seeking Tengu
Radrick Anon |
Hearing that the contest is over, Radrick helps his opponent to his feet and motions to the man's dropped weapon. "You got me with the reach of that one. I'll remember that next time." He moves over to pick up his own dropped weapon then watches as they set up for the contest. Hearing the details he shakes his head and backs out.
He accepts the healing from his comrade and notices when he signs up for the contest. "If I understand what they're saying it is without weapons, but if they'll allow it I've got a potion of Bull's Strength you could have. ??"
Kurasu |
"That sure is a generous offer Radrick and I'd be glad to accept it, however I fear that this potion would have no effect on me since the belt I am wearing is bestowing upon me the strength of a bear already. I appreciate the thought though." Kurasu answers with a smile on his face to Radrick.
EDIT Does magic in this contest have the same rules as in the main tournament? 10min/lvl upwards spells are allowed before starting the contest; spells or abilities with lesser duration can be cast freely during the challenge, but would set me behind in the race since there is a time factor from what I did understand? Is that a correct assumption?
I ask because if allowed I would plan to cast divine favor/ use my Blessing of Destruction during the challenge to give me some extra damage if needed.
GM Deadly Secret |
When you are ready to enter the contest, you may wait in line. Other contestants race around and some break items and some don’t. The items are replaced with new ones and it is now your turn.
You must break in this order:
- Coconut
- Ice Block
- Metal bar
- Quarterstaff
- River stone
- Staked boards
- Staked bricks
- Stacked clay tiles
Kurasu, you're up! A single melee unarmed attacks only or Str check to break per item!
Kurasu |
"Alright, let's do this!"
Kurasu utters a short prayer to Hei Feng to gift strength to his fists as he approaches the first object.
Kurasu uses a point of Fervor to cast Divine Favor on himself in a swift action, granting him a +3 luck bonus to damage rolls for 1 minute. He's using his unarmed strikes to attempt to break the objects.
Coconut: 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
Ice Block: 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
Metal Bar: 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
Quarterstaff: 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
River Stone: 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Staked Boards: 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
Staked Bricks: 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Stacked Clay Tiles: 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
GM Deadly Secret |
I forgot to mention you attack each thing with a specific body party that is labeled for each item. Your rolls stay as is, it's just flavor.
Kurasu does not break the Coconut with your hands and instead takes 1d6 ⇒ 6 damage.
You do not break the ice block with your arms and instead takes 1d8 ⇒ 1 damage
You do not break the metal bar with your head and instead takes 2d8 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5 damage
You do not break the quarterstaff with your feet and instead takes 1d8 ⇒ 2 damage
You do not break the river stone with your fingers and instead takes 1 Dex damage
You do not break the stacked boards with your hands and instead takes 1d4 ⇒ 1 damage
You do not break the stacked bricks with your hands and instead takes 1d6 ⇒ 2 damage
You do not break the stacked clay tiles with your hands and instead takes 1d4 ⇒ 1 damage
The monks usher you out of the ring to prepare for the next guy.
You were kinda close on 2 of them, but not so much the others.
Any one else want to give it a try?
Kurasu |
Ouch, well that didn't go too well. I should proably stick to poetry and dancing, but no one can say I didn't try. Kurasu thinks with a smirk on his face.
Kurasu would heal his wounds after the challenge.
Lesser Restoration: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Fervor: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 3, 5) = 16
Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 instead of 1 Divine Fervor
Radrick Anon |
Radrick watches Kurasu, nodding at each failure. He easily accepts that he would have done no better.... "Maybe Sol could do better?"
Danh Long |
Danh Long watches Kurasu's performance, cringing slightly at each each failed attempt. Then he shrugs.
"I'll give it a go I guess," Dan Long says stepping up.
STR checks
Coconut: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Ice Block: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Metal Bar: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Quaterstaff: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
River Stone: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Stacked Boards: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Stacked Bricks: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Stacked Clay Tiles: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Radrick Anon |
I see +5, for Strength. Doesn't the +1 ability check for the luck stone apply?
GM Deadly Secret |
Dahn breaks the Coconut with his hands.
You break the ice block with your arms.
You do not break the metal bar with your head and instead takes 2d8 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3 damage

You break the stacked clay tiles with your hands.
The monks usher you out of the ring to prepare for the next guy. Unfortunately you did not win either.
Danh Long |
"Eh... not too bad. Smarts though," Danh Long says, rubbing his hand as he exits the arena. "Want to give it a go, Sol?" he asks the nagaji.
Sol Drakescale |
Sorry for the slow post, been having some internet issues.
Sol nods at Danh Long's suggestion. "Yeah, I'll try."
Coconut: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Ice Block: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17

Stacked Bricks: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
Stacked Clay Tiles: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Danh Long |
Oops! I forgot the STR from my belt. Doubt it changes much, but I should have had +6. The cracked version doesn't affect ability checks, Radrick.
GM Deadly Secret |
Sorry that +1 didn't help.
Sol breaks the Coconut with his hands.

Anyone else?
GM Deadly Secret |
Interspersed with dozens of bouts between the other contestants hoping to move to the next round of the contest, the Emissary offers exhibition matches between randomly chosen combatants and either noncombatants or captured monsters, some in the Grand Pavilion and others hosted elsewhere. Your team receives word that they have been selected for one such exhibition, to be held in a small fighting ring a short distance from the Grand Pavilion.
Do you accept?
Radrick Anon |
Practice is always a good thing. Radrick says yes.
Kurasu |
"Fighting for the amusement of others? Hell yea, count me in!" the Tengu says.
He would offer his team healing for the coming exhibition match.
You will have to make due with the Dex Dmg though...
Cure Light Wounds on Sol: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 (-1 Protection from Law)
Cure Light Wounds on Danh: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 (-1 Divine Favor)
GM Deadly Secret |
When you arrive, you find Kiang Zhen waiting for them with a large, closed sack at her feet. As several dozen onlookers watch eagerly from the stands, the oni directs them into the center of the ring before chanting something quietly over the sack and motioning in the PCs’ direction.
A large being begins to rise from the bag.
This hulking headless corpse clutches a massive axe in each fist. A grotesquely skinned face stretches across the creature’s chest.

As a reminder, you can not leave the white box. Literally…. There is a wall of force. You may deal lethal damage and cast spells. Remember to play to the crowd if you want those sweet bonuses and avoid penalties. You will not know what these bonuses are, but I will give you hints by how the crowd is reacting to you each round. You may cast spells on yourself that last 10 min/CL or longer, anything that requires 1 min/CL or rounds won’t be allowed until round 1.
Up first, Radrick!
Radrick Anon |
Radrick remembers saying 'yes' to this exhibition, but wonders if that might have been a mistake.... Whatever the beast was it certainly wouldn't care about playing to the crowd! He steps forward and does an elaborate dance with his pair of Kama, pretending to trip phantom enemy while calling out at times matching particular strikes. When he reaches the point ten feet ahead of the party he freezes in place. "Let it come to us and use magic or ranged attacks. That giant's certainly got the reach on us...."
Moving forward 10' to G5. I'm assuming from the description and picture that it's some sort of giant undead thing? Would Knowledge:Religion or History help to identify it?
Does the Magic Vestment from the previous combat still count? Duration is 1 hour/level.
Know-Religion: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19
Know-History: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (15) + 16 = 31
Performance: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Sol Drakescale |
Sol nods at Radrick's suggestion, waiting to use his inborn rage until the undead creature is closer. Instead he casts a spell, causing his image to shimmer and then split into Mirror image: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4duplicates.
Moving forward next to Radrick, then casting mirror image
Kurasu |
Kurasu uses his Blessing; "Destructive Attacks" (granting +5 morale bonus on weapon damage rolls for 1min) on Danh. Then the Tengu moves to Sols side, planning to bless the Nagaji next. E4
He utters a short prayer to Heif Feng for protection. (Using 1 point of his fervor to cast Shield of Faith upon himself in a swift action granting him +3 deflection bonus)
Danh Long |
Dahn Long shouts some quick instructions to his companions on how to make the most of an opening in their foe's defenses (swift action to grant Paired Opportunists with Tactician for 8 rounds) then steps behind Radrick (move action to G3) and focuses himself, becoming one with his gun (standard action to gain Improved Critical with his pistol).
GM Deadly Secret |
Even without its head, this undead stand over 8 feet tall. Cords of thick muscle twist beneath the creatures’ hairless gray corpse-flesh. Their skin is cold to the touch and their wounds do not bleed. It carries little else except for its weapons and the heads of its victims, strung together by their hair and hung from its belt.
The undead moves forward and his appearance is enough to scare you. [b'Everyone roll a will save;[/b] fear based as you are within its aura.
DC 22; Fail and you are panicked for unknown amount of rounds (I keep track). Succeed and you are shaken for 1 rd.
The creature then casts a spell.
Spellcraft
Sol 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
You do not know what spell it is.
The area around the undead begins to dim and is now considered low-light.
Round 2
The crowd is waiting in anticipation and doesn’t seem to be cheering.
Up next, Radrick
Radrick Anon |
Radrick Will Save: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 29 feels the fear radiating from the creature. He is able to resist it but is still concerned. Why didn't the behemoth attack? He moves slightly and calls out "Spread out. It may have a magical attack. Don't give it an easy group target!" while activating his bracers and doing a sweeping maneuver attack.
5' step to H6. Free action to activate the boots of speed. Swift action to activate the longarm bracer. Sweeping Maneuver lets me do two combat maneuvers as a standard action.
Trip Attempt: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (16) + 25 = 41
Disarm Attempt: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (17) + 23 = 40 If successful I take one of its axes from it and drop it behind me. If the roll is 10 more than needed, I take both. Not likely!
CRAP! I forgot to ask. Is it large? Or bigger. I cannot Trip more than one size up (large). Well, if it is, I tried and failed....
Radrick Anon |
I forgot to add in (subtract) the modifier for shaken and now it won't let me edit....
Kurasu |
Kurasu notices the Nagaji flee in terror. Knowing they will need their scaled teammate in order to stand a chance the Tengu retrieves a scroll from his belt pouch and activates it.
Move action to grab scroll of "Remove Fear", Standard action to use scroll on Sol, supressing the fear effect for 10min
Afterwards he assumes a defensive fighting stance, changing his position slightly.
Swift action to activate Crane Style, 5ft step to D4
EDIT I forgot to write this in the initial post, but I think I also grant Sol a +4 morale bonus on saves vs fear effect for the duration of the spell.
Kurasu |
Oh sry, I did think the area for the dim light and the fear aura were the same. My bad.
Will: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19
Well, ignore my last post then.
