ROUND NINE (cont'd)

As the four of you begin to debate your approach to the wererat problem, your foe on the ground snarls at you defiantly. "Oh, you'll talk to Girrigz! And he will answer you with steel!" Standing up, he scrambles away from you and into the next room.

He provokes attacks of opportunity from Lantressa and Selawyn (though he has substantial cover from her) as he stands and moves away, if you want to take them...Also, Teo can insert himself back into initiative before the wererat goes if he wishes. Party's up!

Selawyn looks at Lantressa disbelievingly. "Of course I would act differently! If someone came to me and asked to talk I would talk with them I wouldn't just attack them, regardless of how threatening they were! I'm also not planning to try and start a war! We have tried talking to these were-rats and they haven't listened to us. At what point do we accept that they won't listen to reason and use force! Is it after they start a war and slaughter innocent people?!?" Selawyn doesn't attack the were-rat as it moves away just in case she might accidentally hit Lantressa. Instead she barrels past the tiefling and quickly takes up a guarding position as she looks into the room ahead. "And now is not the time to be getting into a debate about morality!"

Moving into the room ahead and based on what's in there readying an attack if anything approaches threateningly.

Lantressa glared at the ratman as he rose and fled but let him go, it's not like they didn't know the group was here already anyway. "Really? If you had been hunted by those who persecuted you, those who had shown nothing but violence and hate towards you, you mean to tell me you wouldn't try to drive off those individuals if they tried to come into your home uninvited?" She shook her head and let it go for now, "Fine, we'll discuss this later, for now no more killing if the wererat isn't a threat anymore like that last one, I don't want to see you murder another unconscious person, particularly since we gave our word that we would try to avoid killing them if we could." With that, Lantressa carefully entered the room with Selawyn.

Updating the map and giving a room description, Korriban and Teodor still have actions. :)

Several pieces of broken furniture, dried hay, and fragments of lumber burn in a small fire at the center of this open, ruggedly carved cavern. Short alcoves filled with filthy, oversized rats' nests line the walls, and the disgusting drip of polluted black condensation echoes through the chamber. A thick flow of sewage spreads across the western edge of the chamber, flowing from a crack in the western wall to another in the south.

The two wererats you're pursuing are standing on the far side of the fire, near another crevice in the wall, this one barely more than a crack--it looks too small for any of you to move through easily. They turn toward you with fear and hate in their eyes as you enter the cavern.

Map's been updated!

Korriban scoffs back. "I'm not ordering you to do anything. I'm just trying to prevent our group from falling apart." He rolls his shoulders. "As for the healing, I'm good." He moves into the room and stares at the wererats. He spreads his arms in an aggressive manner.

No, Korriban, only if you're double moving or attacking. Moving forward? Ish?

ROUND TEN

As you all step into the next chamber, the wererats back up toward the far wall in fear. Just then, though, you see a small shape dart out from the crack in the wall. Suddenly the shape is shifting, and within bare seconds another wererat--this one lithe and armored, carrying a silver rapier--stands among them.

"This is what you called me for, you fools?" he spits at the other two. Perhaps it's the flickering light, but you're having a hard time focusing your eyes on him--his outline seems to blur and waver, as though you're viewing him alone through a heat wave. He turns to you and levels his rapier at you across the fire. "I should have known that some fool would alert the scum aboveground of my plans. Know that I am Girrigz, chosen of Murnath, and I will lead my people to greatness! This is your last chance to flee before I execute you." The two wererats behind him don't seem nearly as confident as he does.

The party's up!

Teodor:
Girrigz seems pretty set on killing everyone on the upper world, to you. He's clearly driven by rage and hatred, not righteous anger.

Girrigz, outline still rippling, stares at Teodor incredulously. "So you've, what, come to join me? Why then did you slay my men? Who are these 'real oppressors' you speak of?" He gives a hollow laugh. "If you'd like to embrace lycanthropy yourselves, that I'd be more than happy to supply you with!" He bares his teeth in a feral grin.

Knowledge (Arcana) DC 21:
Girrigz appears to be under the effects of a blur spell.

Lantressa looked around the column she was hiding behind to this new speaker and said, "We didn't come her to fight you, we came here to talk. We killed your men because they forced it by attacking us. I came forward, alone, to try and parley with you but they refused me entrance and started to attack me, what we did we did in self-defense." She moved to stand nearer to Selawyn so that she could be seen more clearly, "This 'real oppressor' that my friend mentioned is something that he and the others can detail better, I'm a newer part of this group and,' she glanced at Selawyn briefly, "a difficult one at that." She let her tail swing freely where Girrigz could see it better, and made sure to stand so that her cloak was pushed open better, so that he could see she was most certainly not human, "and as you can see, even if my friends accept your offer of conversion, I can't as you can't infect me, my demonic nature will win out if you try." Lantressa gave him an imploring look as she said, "Please, speak with us in good faith about your grievances and I promise to do what I can to see them addressed."

Selawyn decides that she couldn't take any more of this 'diplomacy' that her companions were trying so she simply went into the other room to wait until either they had succeed or asked for her help. As she walked away she simply looked over her shoulder at Korriban. "Do you want to wait over here while these three get to talking?"

Korriban looks back at Selawyn and smirks. "Oh? You want to spend some alone time with me?" He chuckles. "Sorry to disappoint you. But, I might want to aid the diplomacy here. But, don't worry, Sel." He smiles and winks. "After this, we can spend time together if you want. Just the two of us." He gives a good natured laugh.

Korriban turns back to Girrigz. "Listen, Girrigz. All of this started because of some misunderstanding. There's no need to kill everyone on the surface. Let's just talk this out and we can work out some compromise, like she said. Also, no thank you on the conversion. I couldn't survive the life of a wererat." He chuckles.

Sorry for the delayed post; I was away from my computer last night and had to think through what Girrigz's response to all this would be, to boot! :P

Girrigz laughs--more genuinely, now, it seems--and lowers his blade. What he says, though, makes it clear that you're still far from friends. "Ha! You speak of compromise, of airing grievances? I am not some mealy-mouthed advocate for the downtrodden. I do not seek a redress of grievances. Our LIVES are grievances! The very nature of our existence in this stinking morass of human so-called civilization...we are smarter, faster, fiercer than any human, the favored sons and daughters of the great Horned Rat, and yet we scavenge on the fringes of society for SCRAPS! Scraps, and even that your ilk would deny us.

"Let me tell you a story. Mere months ago, I went to the surface world, seeking as usual some solace and the chance to vent my fury. I found a woman--a street-walking tramp--and offered her pay to sate my desires. This whore, the lowest scum of the city you dwell in, refused me, and when I went to teach her a lesson in humility, I earned two silver bolts from a Guard for my pains! Your world cares nothing for us--the most worthless human life is prized above one of ours. I heard Murnath then, as I fled with the bolts burning in my shoulder. He showed me the way forward. Chaos and destruction are not my goals, they are my tools. We will overrun your city, burn and slay those who resist, and bless the rest with the gift of wererat form! This city will become a haven for my people, and we shall multiply and be fruitful, and the spawn of Murnath shall cover the earth, and mothers who began their lives as humans shall weep to see what we make them produce!!"

He turns partially back toward the tunnel, almost seeming to forget that you're there. "You've set my plans back, but your foolishness amuses me. Leave, and spread your chaos, old man, and weaken this foul city ahead of our advance. If you would strike a blow against the rich scum you revile, bring them here to me and so replace the men you've slain. Now go, and leave my realm. I'll look on your faces no more."

Perception DC 18:
Girrigz's form seems to have stopped flickering and wobbling as his speech wound down--whatever was going on there, it's not happening anymore, as far as you can tell.

Perception DC 25:
The other two wererats, clearly afraid of both you and Girrigz, are flattened against the wall, but you can hear a brief, whispered exchange between them as Girrigz's speech goes on.

"Ugh, I hate the story about the prostitute," one says as he clutches a glaive wound. "Girrigz is a visionary, but it just feels a bit misogynistic."

"Dude, there's definitely a reason we haven't been able to recruit any ladies," the other mutters morosely, watching Girrigz carefully as his leader rants.

female | tiefling (pitborn) | sorcerer 8 |HP: 48/50 | AC:14 [17]; T:12; FF:13 [15]| CMB +4, CMD:16 | Fort:+6; Ref:+6; Will:+8 | Init:+2; Perc:+0 Volatile Conduit 1/1 | Beguiling Voice (dc 17) 3/8 | Fascinate (dc 20) 2/2 | Spells: lvl 1 7/8; lvl 2 4/7; lvl 3 3/6; lvl 4 3/4

Lantressa was intrigued by this story about the prostitute and couldn't help but ask, "What exactly did you want her to do anyway? I know my sisters and it must have been something very...different...to have her refuse you?" she had a realization then and said, "Or did you approach her as you are now and have her refuse because of her own prejudiced revulsion?" She considered that possibility a brief instant and then said, "If the latter was the case then she was a fool."

Male Human (Varisian) hp 45/56 | AC 22/T 17/FF 15 | CMD 22 | Fort +4 | Ref +7 [+8 v traps] | Will +2 | Init +6 | Perc +13 (+15 to locate traps) | SM +17

Korriban listens to Girrigz as he goes on his villain speech. The grip on his rapier tightens a bit as the wererat talks about killing the surface. He is interested in the part about the prostitute. When Lantressa asks about it, Korriban chimes in. "I'm curious as well. What happened with her? Also, who is this Murnath guy?"

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27

Korriban notices the weakening flickering with his sharp eyes. He makes a note of this. He also hears the whispers of the two other wererats. He looks at them and gives a smile and a nod, showing that Girrigz appears to be misogynistic.

"You dare s*&% such hipocracy out of your mouth hole. Each living sapient is equally worthy: man, woman, wererat, tiefling, even our sex criminal with the rapier. You dare judge a life while complaining of inequality?" Rat the snake slithers up Teodor's neck and hisses into his ear. "I'm afraid you're right, my friend. This one's day has come. "Does it matter what I asked, or she replied?!" Girrigz cries irritably. "What matters is that the slime denied me!"

When he hears Teodor's declaration, the wererat's face darkens. "So be it. I'll send you straight to the Abyss! With me, brothers!"

One of the other wererats coughs delicately. "Uh, actually boss, we're pretty injured and you seem like you've got it GAAAACKGL!" His words are cut off as Girrigz's face darkens, and he whirls on the other two. His first thrust goes straight into the speaking wererat's throat; the second shrieks and barely avoids being skewered as Girrigz lashes out again.

COMBAT! ROUND ONE

Selawyn hears the gurgle and shrieks of the wererat, even if she doesn't hear Teodor's declaration.

Girrigz wins initiative, but spends his first action lashing out at his minions. Korriban, Teodor, and Selawyn are up first, then the wererat (though he looks likely to just flee), then Lantressa! I don't have stats just at the moment, so they'll be up later.

ROUND TWO

Teodor's holy symbol flares to life, flooding the cavern with brief, sickly light, and closing minor wounds, scrapes, and cuts on everyone present. Korriban dashes forward and stabs at Girrigz with his rapier, but the wererat deflects it with his own, laughing. Selawyn's javelin strikes a glancing blow on his shoulder, but doesn't appear to even break the skin. Girrigz cackles. "And here I heard something about much-vaunted silver blades!"

The other wererat, seeing an opportunity, darts away from Girrigz with a squeal, only to slip and fall in the grease that blocks the exit to the north. Lantressa slings a gobbet of acid at Girrigz, but he just ducks it.

Girrigz saunters closer to the fire. "My turn." He salutes Korriban sardonically with his rapier, and then lunges forward viciously, rapier darting. The first flickering stab catches Korriban in the side, but he manages to deflect the next and dodge Girrigz's gnashing teeth. The wererat scowls.

Korriban takes 8 points of damage, and Korriban, Selawyn, and Teodor are up! For spacing purposes I've decided to just count the central square of the fire (immediately west of Girrigz) as actually on fire. The map's a bit unclear...

Korriban grunts as he takes the damage from Girrigz's sword. However, using his training from Vencarlo, he deflects the other strike and dodge the teeth. He decides to try and stab him again.

ROUND TWO (cont'd)

Girrigz deflects Korriban's attack but howls as Selawyn's silvered guisarme slices into his back, and turns to her with a snarl. The other wererat, picking himself up, staggers across the grease and out of sight into the tunnel as the sickly light of Teodor's god fills the room.

Lantressa can see the tide beginning, perhaps, to turn against Girrigz...

Lantressa's up, then your foe!

Can't see the map just now, having trouble loading it. Fortunately I shouldn't need to for what I'm doing.

Lantressa noticed that things were turning their direction and so decided to help them along. She chanted and pointed causing a patch of grease to appear beneath Girgitz in an effort to trip him up and make him easier to deal with.

I cast grease on him so that it won't hinder us but will keep him from backing away and hopefully drop him on his ass. DC 16 reflex to stay standing. I'll draw it on once I can get the map to come up again.

Odd, map seems to work ok for me...I've put a template down on where I imagine you'll want it, but go ahead and adjust it when you can, Lantressa! :)

ROUND THREE!

Girrigz staggers as the grease appears beneath his feet, but stays standing. He glares hatefully at Lantressa. "I'll get to you in good time!"

For the moment, though, he seems preoccupied by the warriors around him--particularly Selawyn's silvered blade. He starts toward her, clearly intending to run her through, but slips as he thrusts and almost sprawls on his face, creating an ideal opening for Korriban and Selawyn's blades!

Great thing about grease? He can't 5' step, which keeps him from full attacking...and makes him vulnerable to an AoO from both Selawyn and Korriban as he moves to close with her! (Go ahead and roll those, I've got to run off at the moment.) Gonna take the wererat in the next room out of initiative, so the WHOLE PARTY is up!

So, he can be coup de grace'd, but that's a full-round action. BUT Korriban's attack most definitely hits, because he gets a +4 to the attack roll and Girrigz's Dexterity is 0. Which means... :D

Selawyn's blade takes a chunk out of the wererat's shoulder as he darts forward, and then he suddenly freezes, staring as though in horror at...something...something that you can't see. Selawyn thinks for a half-second that she can see a strange, ghostly moon hovering in front of Girrigz as Teodor speaks--then she steps backward, chopping into Girrigz's belly as Korriban rounds the fire and plunges his silvered rapier into Girrigz's neck!

The wererat collapses to his knees, blood bubbling from his lips. He lets out a single, dark laugh, and then collapses.

COMBAT OVER!

A strange silence descends on the cavern now, one you've not heard since you entered. As you're catching your breath, the wererat Girrigz stabbed slowly clambers up from the floor--you realize that he regained consciousness sometime during the fight, but had been keeping his head down.

"That was...that was awful," he says hoarsely. "It were like...goin' into a great void with stars and then...then the moon looked at me." He shudders. Then he glances down at Girrigz and spits. "Good riddance, I say. I suppose I'd best go see what's become of the others...thanks, by the by." He regards you warily. Lantressa was relieved to see the fight end and was more than happy to dismiss the grease patches on the ground. With that accomplished she looked at the body of the man they'd taken out, this leader of mice and men, and then began to check him for anything of interest as she looked at his newly awakened ex-minion. She spoke with sympathy and said, "I'm sorry about the others we killed, I truly wanted to avoid that but it seems that it wasn't meant to be." She gave the wererat a smile and said, "I'm glad you came through this alright and I hope you won't hold what happened here against us or the surface dwellers. I'd like to try and help with your people's problems int he city, if I can. I can't promise that I'll be successful, my own kind are generally looked down upon after all, but I can promise to do what I can."

Having finished searching for valuables on Girrigz body she rose and asked, "Did Girrigz have any next of kin that need to be notified of his passing, and do any of these things," she gestured at the items she'd recovered, "Need to be turned over to them?" Another thought dawned on her and she asked, "Also, the helpless one who my companion here," she gestured to Selawyn, "killed in the other room as an example have a family to notify? If so I would like to meet them, I feel something is owed to them for what happened." Her voice was sad as she finished, it was obvious the murder of the helpless, unconscious, wererat was weighing on her mind.

Korriban looks at the wererat and smiles. "Well, it's no problem. We got rid of a serious threat to Korvosa. Don't worry. We know all wererats aren't like Girrigz here." He then decides to check out what Girrigz had on him. He turns to the wererat and asks, "By the way, is there anything else here of interest?"

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20

When Lantressa says that she'll help the were rats, Korriban smiles and nods. "I'll help out too. Despite being wererats, you're still Korvosans. Good way to start a change in this city."

Male

The wererat blinks at Teodor's assertion and stands a little taller. "Well, I'll be. Never heard of anything like that before! ...Maybe we will talk, at that."

When Lantressa and Korriban offer their help, he shrugs. "Girrigz ain't had any kin, his parents died or run off when he was right little. Far as I know, you can keep his stuff--I certainly don't want that blasted blade." He kicks Girrigz's rapier contemptuously. "Most o' the ones out there didn't have much that way, either--life's short and hard down here, and most of us got dealt a worse hand than the others. Lots of acquaintances among our kind, but few close family." His lips twist. "Hopefully some of the others are still alive. If I do find any family of the ones you've killed, I'll bring 'em to you...if they're willing. Otherwise, who knows? Maybe if y'all succeed at your quest to change the people up there we'll meet in better times. But I got my doubts."

He heads toward the entrance chamber to check on the wounded there. "Not much else t'see, here. The north is just dens for the rats we kept here, but I think you already met most of 'em. Go through there and you'll find Girrigz's room to the east--we'd come and go through a crack in the wall right there, near you, but I think it's too small for any of you."

"I wouldn't go to the south, though, we trapped an otyugh in there."

Girrigz, when Lantressa investigates him, doesn't prove to be carrying much of interest: there are two empty vials that probably once contained potions in his belt pouch, along with 30 gold sails. When she detects magic, she discovers that both the wererat's rapier and the chain shirt he wears are magical: a +1 silver rapier and a +1 chain shirt, respectively.

Korriban doesn't notice anything off. He says, "Looks like you're starting a church there, eh, Teo?"

That's about 7 sails and 5 shields for each of us." He looks at the rapier in his hands. "I could really get some use out of this." He looks at the armor. "It's lighter armor. Selawyn shakes her head at Korriban's question. "I've got no need for a rapier or any type of light armor feel free to take them though I suggest washing them first." Then seeing that most everyone is on good terms Selawyn heads back into the room with the fallen were-rats and begins to tear off a few bits of cloth to help tie up any wounds that they might have. She also takes the time to drag them to a safe spot to rest while they recovered.
