I decided to do a little bulleted timelime this go around:
Bright Past
- Descendent of one of the original architects who built Winged Wyvern bridge in Neverwinter
- Classically trained in Neverwinter in the arcane arts, and particularly developing a specialty in the history of Earlann
- Led a comfortable life in the Blacklake District
Recent Tragedy
- Daughter had rare terminal illness over the course of years
- Turned to the Shadow Thieves in desperation, was bled slowly of her family fortune for a monthly cure
- Husband died pushing himself too hard to make money in rough jobs
- In the last few months of her daughter's life, she did not have the money to pay and went into a very high debt
- Fled to Waterdeep to hide from the Shadow Thieves (who are currently banished from the city), under a false identity.
My main goal as a player with this character is to focus on her in game personality (moreso than the background) and geek out absurdly heavily on Faerun lore. Check out my AL game, and/or Lost Tamoachan game for examples of my writing style (I am proud of those).
Personality Traits:
1. Teetering on the somber edge of the madness of despair, often manifesting the image of her dead daughter subconsciously in her illusions.
2. A paragon of intellectualism, but wracked with irrational fears and paranoia.

Reynwyn |

Okay, Faelyn here with my half-elf warlock (Raven Queen patron). I hope the background is not TOO long and I can even flesh it out more if you'd like! You can find it at the bottom of his profile.
If selected, I'd like to have Reynwyn pick up a book to learn Deep Speech (which I selected as one of my languages from the Inheritor background) and then slowly deciphering his uncle's journal and then translating it from Deep Speech into Common so that he can delve further into the secrets of the Raven Queen.
I left a little twist in uncle Jareth's letter that could be used to introduce other meddling entities that perhaps picked up on the Raven Queen's sudden meddling in the Realms. I think agents of Shar would likely have been tracking Uncle Jareth and may be searching for the recipient of his journal after his untimely death. Let me know what you think!

GM Hewy |

scranford here.
Vinter is a mercenary fighter and former member of the Zhentium. Following is his background. If chosen I'll update the profile for this character.
Hi scranford, looks good so far, but can't see your background there anywhere (I imagine you've picked one, as you have a bunch of skills). If you pick some personality traits, an ideal, bond, and flaw, you'll be pretty much sorted :)

GM Hewy |

mishima: That's a pretty sad tale. If Nilelane were selected, it might be nice to find her a solid friend among the other party members, she seems pretty fragile right now (not a negative thing at all); perhaps another PC could be shepherding her, playing the role of protector - or not, just throwing ideas around :) All in all, looks good, although the choice of charlatan background surprised me. I guess that's reflecting her life since she went on the run?

GM Hewy |

Okay, it's already going to be really hard to pick only 4-6 of these characters, and I imagine there'll be more to come, so I'll stick to the one week recruitment and establish a hard cut-off time of Wednesday 11th at midnight GMT. I might stop dots and expressions of interest before that. List of current dots, ideas, and submissions coming shortly.

GM Hewy |

Alrighty, here's what we got so far. "Complete" doesn't necessarily mean totally done, but mostly so. They're all great!

Okay, I've decided I think, on a dwarven cleric (tempest domain) Haven't quite decide on sub-race yet.
Background: Sailor
Feature: Ships Passage When you need to, you can secure free passage on a sailing ship for yourself and your adventuring companions. You might sail on the ship you served on, or another ship you have good relations with (perhaps one captained by a former crewmate). Because you’re calling in a favor, you can’t be certain of a schedule or route that will meet your every need. Your Dungeon Master will determine how long it takes to get where you need to go. In return for your free passage, you and your companions are expected to assist the crew during the voyage.
Personality traits:
My friends know they can rely on me, no matter what.
I stretch the truth for the sake of a good story
To me, a tavern brawl is a nice way to get to know a
new city
I never pass up a friendly wager.
Ideal:
Freedom. The sea is freedom—the freedom to go anywhere and do anything.
Aspiration. Someday I’ll own my own ship and chart my own destiny. (Any)
Bond:
Ruthless pirates murdered my captain and crewmates,
plundered our ship, and left me to die. Vengeance will
be mine
Flaw:
Once I start drinking, it’s hard for me to stop.
My pride will probably lead to my destruction.
Strange for a dwarf, he was always more fond of being in the open air, particularly the sea.

Vinter Klodge |

Grrr... Hero Lab doesn't output the background, and D&D Beyond doesn't output anything but a pdf Character sheet. Looks like as much as I've spent on CG programs something would work. Now I have to do the old fashion thing and type it in :-)

Right, mainly because part of the Charlatan BG is the False Identity feature. She has the forged documents and disguise and such to truly appear as another person. The difference I suppose is she is doing it for safety rather than monetary gain.
A sad tale indeed, but hopefully not a depressing character who is a chore to have around. I want her to be eccentric and a little bit mad (Mad Hatter mad) from the death. A definite fey streak to her personality. Definitely game for partnering up with a 'protector' of sorts, cool idea.
I might also swap Investigation for History, an earlier build had her as half-elf and forgot I had to drop the additional skills.

In the days of yore, before the Mighty Netheril Empire was ground to dust, there was a time of great knowledge. The Netherese were powerful magic users, and there was no source of magic that was beyond their reach: They could part the veil of time and space, travel to different planes, and even bring the living back to life.
One of the archmages made great strides into the creation of an entirely new servitor race: The Golem. They would be completely subservient to their creator, or those who had the control rod, and even the most powerful magical spells would not effect them.
As this Master wizard, whose name is lost to the ages, reached his waning years of life, he knew that he must do something to extend his time on Faerun, yet he was known to loath necromancy, as one of his most hated rivals was a Necromancer of no small power.
So this mage, who is known as the Golem Mage in honor of his contributions to the dweomercraft of Golemancy, performed a ritual that none have been able to even begin to duplicate: He used his soul to power one of his creations.
There was, however, something wrong with the ritual. While the mage's life force was preserved, it came at a terrible cost: All of his magic powers, and a great deal of his higher reasoning, were stripped from him.
When he rose in his new body, it is said that all of Faerun shook from the roar of rage that he released.
No one knows what happened next, but as the millennia grew, he became at best a footnote for the rare historical scholar. The world forgot his name, or even that he existed at all.
It wasn't until an adventuring company of renown, The Gilded Fist, came to explore and excavate his laboratory. There, on a table made of the purest crystal that was now cracked and blackened, lay what at first the adventurers believed to be an animated suit of armor, or a Golem.
Instead, as he stirred, he asked them who they were and what they were doing in his laboratory.
Wishing to avoid a battle if they could, and intrigued by his ability to speak, the mage of the group entered into negotiations with the Golem, who lacked a name. It was the Divine servant of the party who suggested his name, Piety (for he was devout in his worship of magic itself). Taking on this name, and having reached an accord, Piety escorted them through his laboratory complex, accessing areas that had long remained dormant.
Once the Gilded Fist has completed exploring the complex, they invited him to come with them, pointing out that he had nothing left here worth staying for. Piety agreed, and joined the Gilded Fist on several of their adventures before striking out on his own when the group broke up.
Now he wanders the new world, learning all he can about both the History of the world and the place his people hold in that history.

Ok so here is what i am thinking. Let me know if its suitable for play. May need to flesh out some more and go through stat points etc
Beerg
Half-Orc Paladin
Beerg was the by product of a town raid by orcs, and once born was left at a temple of Helm where he was raised by a priest named Attimus. Beerg was an exile at heart and often shunned by common people. Beerg left the temple of Helm at the age of 12 despite the loving nature of Attimus towards him. Beerg had an anger inside him that could not be calmed. This is what drove him towards the god, Torm. Since then Beerg has spent his time aiding those in need and performing acts of vengeance against evil. Beerg is now 15 and determined to spend his life traveling and finding injustices. He has preferred his own company for some years but has banded with small groups in recent times understanding that power in numbers can be of great assistance when goals align. None of these have lasted more than months.

GM Hewy |

So I'm just looking over some character updates and our new arrivals' concepts/sheets, and I'll comment on them all soonish. However, I just wanted to ask, how many people have played any of the adventures in Tales from the Yawning Portal, and if so, which ones? I was thinking of adapting one or two of them, but I wouldn't want to bore people, so let me know. Whether you have or not won't affect your chances of playing; if there are folks who end up in the party and have played the TftYP dungeon(s) I was thinking of maybe using, I just won't use them.
Anyhow, back to reviewing your excellent character ideas...

GM Hewy |

Critzible: All looks pretty good, just need your fluff and you're pretty much done. A couple of things though...
First, not sure why you have a feat, Skilled - in 5e, no one starts with a feat unless they take a variant human option. Of course, you could have it for a legit reason that I haven't noticed, but I'm guessing you were assuming it was like PF where everyone started with a feat and humans got two. If you've got it for a good reason, apologies.
Second, really minor, but you want an Ideal from your background (or make one up, but check the background ones to get the gist of it).
Also, great name! Look forward to hearing Joxi Wigglefits's backstory :)

GM Hewy |

ScrappyG: Looking pretty good, but can't see what your background is... Also, as you mentioned, you may want to flesh out your backstory a bit more.
Oh, also, there are no hard and fast restrictions by RAW in 5e for worshippers' alignments , but Torm is a LG god, as a CG paladin you're going to find Torm has issues with chaos. The old "one-step" rule would have meant you could be NG or LN, but not CG. I'm not going to enforce that (as in, disallow or strip powers), but it will add complications to your relationship with Torm and his other followers. So I guess the options are:
- Change your starting alignment to LN or NG
- Plan to change to NG in the course of play, becoming a "better" adherent of Torm
- Try to remain a CG follower of Torm, riding the complications this will cause
- Start a follower of Torm, but break with him in the course of play, taking up a new deity such as Lathander or Tymora
But looking good in general!
