History:

Vinter remembered his parents. From his mother he got his height. She was a Northlander, and a fine herbalist. Though she took some time to learn the herbs, and plants of the Wastes she was a quick learner, and spread her poultices and potions to help all the neighbors.

His father was a Nurian spice merchant who had traveled to the North to bargain with the people, trading southern spices, for northern mosses. He was severely mauled by a Rogue Polar bear, and nursed back to life by his Mother. They fell in love during this period, but realized that they would never fit in, in either culture, so they packed up there things, and little Vinter and headed for the Western Wastes to make their home. They built a small farm with hardy goats, chickens, and a large herb and spice garden. It was not a bad life. While living there Vinter had 4 siblings born. Two girls, and twin infant boys.

Vinter's mother learned much of her lore of herbs and plants of the area from an old man who lived in the hills above the farm. Vinter loved the old man's visits, and began to tag along with him for short day trips when he was only 7. As he grew older, he began to spend longer trips with the man. At first his father approved, but as Vinter grew older he began to expect him to help on the farm more. This caused conflict between him and his father, but as the siblings grew up and were able to help out more around the farm, Vinter was able to spend more time learning about the Wastes from the man. It didn't hurt that the things he learned, particularly about weather, and natural hazards actually helped around the farm as well.

Finally the old man mentioned that he was taking a long trek to see some "Old Ones" in their eternal battle. This was a week trip there and back, and Vinter begged his father to let him go. He finally relented as a "name day" present to his son, and Vinter traveled with the old man. It was the most glorious time of his life, and he learned much of the land and it's people. The time to return home came to soon.

As the two travelers got about a day from home the old man begin to show nervousness. He became much edgier, and told Vinter to keep a sharp eye out, as something was not right. The animals that gave him their information, were not acting as normal. About noon that day they were ambushed by a band of Dust Goblins. With the Bow work of the old, man, and some handy help from his yellow dog, the bandits were finally ran off, but not before Vinter took an arrow in his arm. They doubled the effort to get home, and traveled deep into the night before stopping. The next morning a few hours before sunrise they crested the last hill before home. Vinter was being very brave about his wound, and though it was painful he couldn't wait to show his family what he had been through. Unfortunately he would never get the chance.

They crested the hill, and terror filled Vinters Heart. Before him was the blackened, and still smoking ruins of the Farm. The house and all the outbuildings had been burnt to the ground, the fields trampled, and even bloated livestock lay where it had fallen. Running down the hill Vinter was devastated to find the bodies of his parents, and his two oldest sisters among the dead. Hacked, and stabbed by the familiar Dust Goblin weapons. Vinter buried his parents, and poked through the remains looking for small reminders to remember them by. The next day he informed the old man that he was going for revenge against the tribe. The old man called him foolish, and refused to accompany him. He called the old man a coward, and told him that he was going to save the twins, and take revenge for his families murder.

Tracking the marauding tribe was no problem, and at dawn the next day he charged into the camp, screaming in rage. Though he took many down, he was finally brought down by their overwhelming numbers. Since they still had a few goats to eat, they tied him up, and caged him, saving him to eat another day. Beaten and injured he waited for his death. Once he saw his twin brothers being led around shackled, and cried out to them, but they seemed not to notice them. That night as he lay in a fitful slumber, he felt a cold nose against his cheek. It was the old man's yellow dog. Tied around his neck was a familiar flint dagger belonging to the old man. As Vinter used it to free himself, chaos broke out in the camp. Fire arrows rained down on their shelters, and the old man ran charging into the clearing hacking left and right at the confused goblins. He caught Vinters eyes, and yelled at him "Run you fool". Vinter in a panic took off into the darkness. He fell into a ravine, and was knocked unconscious. Feeling his cowardice he backtracked to the campsite to see the site deserted. Of the old man, or his brothers there was no sign.

For the next five years he traveled the wastes looking for signs of the band that had turned his life to one of hate and vengeance. He put to use the skills that were taught to him by both his family and the old man. Thought he would never give up looking for them, he knew he had to go on with his life. He began to work as a scout leading hunting parties from the cities, or individuals that wished to study the Old Ones. Soon he became known as a reliable and knowledgeable guide, and developed contacts, and friends in all the cities of the Wastes.

His favorite though was Barsella. He bought a small cottage near the docks, and sold his guide services to ships arriving from other lands. He'd been to several Islands beyond the western shore, and knew the wastes as well as any man. Now he was back in town, waiting for his next job. Maybe he'd take that pretty Arabelle the Wainrights daughter to dinner tomorrow night. He still had a bit of coin left, but he knew he must find a new job soon, as his purse was light.
