I'm just commenting too; I wasn't meaning to sound like I was directing my suggestions on motivation to Nighteyes specifically. Just kicking around possible motivations for *any* of the characters/players who aren't feeling particularly sympathetic towards most of the locals. As a player, I'm also not particularly concerned about what the other players' PCs do or how they feel about certain things as long as everyone is having a good time :)
On a totally different note, those song lyrics are not mine but they seemed appropriate for the occasion. I don't have much talent for writing my own song lyrics on the fly, sadly...

Jaru and a 23 save vs fear... like a boss!
I'm surprised you guys flubbed your Knowledge saves...
Anyone wanting to do a Journal entry can get a re-roll on the knowledge checks.
The fear saves? I'm not going to allow a belated journal entry roll - there is story elements afoot that make your failed saves part of the greater tapestry.
Oh and Jaru?
This is holy ground... a site consecrated to the rest of those who lay here and under Pharasma's hand. This sort of thing with glowing stuff rising from graves? Its not a case of 'shouldn't happen'. Its a case of it 'can't happen'... something is VERY VERY wrong here.
I can't emphasise this last bit enough Jaru. Unmarked graves, un-sanctified areas? It can happen. But here?! On this plot of land??
There is no stability loss here but the implications are horrifying. Express it how you will.
You will need to know more before you can do more than guess.

The original cache was all arrows... which made NO sense to me given that bows are normally not usable by priests.
It did make sense to have some arrows - Inquisitors use them and priests have allies after all as well but changing some to bolts made sense. I've also added one or two other things that I think are appropriate to such a cache.

GM Helaman |

"And these-"he holds up a vial. "A haunt siphon. I am uncertain of the exact use, but they could prove very useful. In fact, the strange orbs we encountered outside were very likely haunts- a minor part of the spirit left behind. In my culture, there are as many as five or eight parts to the soul. Those could have been the sheut or a fractured ka," he adds reflectively.
Love the inclusion of the Eyptian/Osrioni flavour

For fun, I've been trying to think of good atmospheric music that I think might suit this game. Since I tend to prefer instrumental tracks versus ones with vocals for PF games, I'm inclined to dig through my folders of video game music to see what might fit. Maybe some Silent Hill or something...
Just rambling, while I wait my turn :)
Also, rereading the combat and damage rules again and it kinda reminds me of stuff found in Vampire and Dark Conspiracy - in those games, you really really really want to avoid combat if you can because taking damage ain't no joke. Of course those games (that I've played in, anyway) were basically set in the present-day or near-future so there's no magical healing. You take shrapnel/bullet/knife wounds? Have fun taking several weeks or months to heal that up.

![]() |
If you want I can start adding music - I've made folder of tunes to use.
As for damage, I was, and am, a huge fan of the Call of Cthulhu rpg. The whole game you suck wind and and pray for a lucky break because the law of averages will kill you or drive you insane eventually. HPs are a HP a week to heal. 2 with medical care. IF you were lucky you MIGHT get a good first aid roll initially but after that you adventured wounded or you didn't adventure at all.
That doesn't really work in a fantasy setting and its dull to sit things out. We haven't seen any REAL injuries yet but we will sooner or later.

Elidal Zemiel |
You know, I've never played Call of Cthulu but my older brother has and he's told me some entertaining stories. I'd love to give it a try, one day. Never could get into playing Vampire much, but I love love love Dark Conspiracy and I wish our RL group played it more often than once or twice every few years. And no, that sort of injury system doesn't make much sense in a fantasy setting, but the emphasis on 'wounds SUCK, avoid when you can' made me think of those other games.
Nah, I don't necessarily mean music to use in-game (unless people wanted to), just music that might fit certain characters or scenes. Possibly even for things that won't happen until later books. This sort of thing is mainly a just-for-fun exercise for me, though I do know some GMs do use music to set the mood for their games. And now, just for funsies, some music!

And from one of my favorite zombie movies ever and totally not fitting with the serious tone of our story at all:
So yeah, there's plenty of creepy dungeon/place ambient-type music, some "people be acting/going crazy" music, a few sad-type pieces and even a few action pieces. I was kind of at a loss for specific NPC/character themes and stuff like that, though.

False Crypt Cache:
12 silver tipped arrows of strange make,
10 other arrows,
4 sun rods,
6 flasks of holy water bearing the seal of Pharasma,
5 bolts in one group
2 other bolts,
5 potions of cure light wounds,
2 potions of lesser restoration,
and paired scroll cases.
Darkwood case decorated with a scarab and eye containing
6 haunt siphons
1 ouija board
Small wax sealed box with two powder packets
leather coin pouch with 50 gold
I don't think we completed detecting for magic properties.

GM Helaman |

Hopefully the combats in the last 24 hours of game time have given you all something a bit different to the normal pace of investigation... starting with Zombie Lorrimor and ending with the centipedes and the spirits.
Later when you are more combat intensive I hope to have some investigation stuff still continue to provide contrast.
The spirits form a valuable learning bridge for you to look into and something I added to the game for story telling reasons as well as for the learning experience.

Looks like either Elidal or I can use the scrolls. Nearly everyone has a crossbow as well.
Nighteyes could use a bow maybe. also, I don't know that we need much more holy water with 6 already, but I don't mind making more.

GM Helaman |

Going to give everyone the next 24 hour or so real time to RP unless I see it flagging as you prepare for the day, eat breakfast and decide on the distribution of the items.
I was going to go into a dream sequence for a bit with you guys playing it out but we've a good flow on the story happening here I changed my mind and decided to close it out - still served the necessary narrative purpose without pulling you away from the story... for now.

Elidal Zemiel |
I will be; I sometimes keep odd hours when I'm not working so I just got up >.>
And the dream thing was funny because there was just enough of a gap between posts that I had time to think of all sorts of theories as to why we were suddenly waking up in a dungeon/cell. Everything from Jorminda drugging us to someone using some sort of enchantment, it was great. Of course I just figured we'd somehow managed to land ourselves in the local jail; the prison never occurred to me until the "wake-up" post.

Jaru Toth |

how do we want to break up the loot?
Jaru might be interested in the darkwood case if only for the motif.
though that might be something for Simeon to use.
Elidal can use the scrolls.
Nighteyes is the only one who can use the arrows, I believe once he gets a bow. ghost salt might be a good one for him as well.
bolts and potions for Lament?

Elidal Zemiel |
My thoughts on the loot:
Arrows - No problem with them going to Nighteyes, assuming he wants to have a bow as a backup weapon. Everyone else seems to carry a crossbow.
Sunrods - Normally I'd suggest these going to those that can't see very well in the dark, but I think everyone that fits that bill has access to cantrips or spells that shed light.
Holy Water - There's enough for everyone to have one flask, if we want to include Vigilance in that. If not, someone will have an extra one.
Bolts - These should probably go to whoever will be primarily relying on their crossbow; Elidal can use one but I'm planning to build her as a primarily melee combatant so these going to Lament or Jaru would make more sense.
Cure Potions - We can split these up or we can let the characters who don't have any healing capabilities carry them, I'm fine with either one.
Lesser Restoration Potions - Same deal as the cure potions.
Ghost Salt - Probably best for Nighteyes; they could also be used to coat arrows instead of a sword.
Scrolls - Elidal can take them all or we can split them up between her and Jaru, either one works for me.
The haunt siphon and the ouija board would probably hold the most interest for Simeon and Lament.

Baradlon"Nighteyes" Vontarfonel |

Holy water should go to skilled ranged attackers, as it's a ranged attack. I will take the arrows if we can secure me a longbow. I'm fine with everything else.
Not sure I'd get too much use out of the ghost salts, you probably need a fire source to apply them.

Wrath of the Righteous has a prominent NPC who is a transexual male to female, and married to another female NPC. I think in core Golarion, homosexuality is totally "normal" and accepted. I'm not sure about in Helaman's world though.
Homosexuality in the world of Golarion for GM Helaman?
Its not so stigmatised as it is in our world but assuming we use the same 10% figure bandied around on earth? Its not common but not uncommon either. In a small town like Ravengro? Yeah, it can be a little tricky and judgmental - current environment definitely makes it harder to gauge.
People may not be open in sharing their affiliation for one reason or another. Marriage in Golarion (of my campaign) is an important institution for inheritance, family alliances and lineage etc and depending on the Gods who are heavy into family, religion may play a part. You can't have a lasting merging of two families without offspring etc but just as hetro couples may have one party slip out for a bit of the 'strange' I can't imagine a spouse with homo tendencies not seeking a lover who caters to their preferences... again, much like our earth.
I go with the Tao of Harry Dresden on this issue. Boink and Let Boink.

Elidal Zemiel |
Responding to Nighteyes: Yeah, one of my RL groups that I play in is on Book 2 of Wrath of the Righteous right now so I did think about that particular NPC when I was writing Elidal's response. I think you're right that in general Paizo-Golarion that it's not any big deal but I wasn't sure about Helaman's Golarion - especially considering the nature of the town/area we're in right now.
I could see it going both ways; it could be a big deal or considering that the town's got us to talk about, it could be considered small potatoes in the grand scheme of things.

![]() |
It comes up in a few of the other APs as well. Curse of the Crimson Throne is one. I think it MAY come up in Runelords too. In any case I will treat it respectfully - I thought it was an interesting spin on some of the background stuff I have going.
How your characters view it is up to you of course.

What's this? A letter?
Toilday, 25th of Calistril, 4714
Dear Adrian,
I'm sorry that it's taken me this long to sit down and put ink to paper. I know how much you enjoy my letters when I travel away from Vigil, but various circumstances have kept me from writing.
As I'm sure mother and father have probably told you by now, I was summoned to the village of Ravengro in the Palatinate of Canterwall in our neighboring country of Ustalav. (That's your geography lesson for the day, by the way.) At any rate, I was summoned to attend the funeral of an associate by the name of Petros Lorrimor. Professor Lorrimor was a man of intelligence and learning; a scholar and researcher whose expertise proved a great help to me once. Though I didn't know the professor well, I was very saddened to hear of his passing.
My trip to Ravengro was a long, but relatively uneventful one. Unfortunately, I arrived in town later than I expected and only just managed to make it for the burial ceremony. It was then that I discovered that the tales we've heard of Ustalavian secrecy and suspicion were no exaggeration. Some of the locals attempted to bar the late Professor's burial in their cemetary - they threw out accusations of witchcraft and necromancy, of all things. Thankfully, some of the others that were invited to attend the funeral stepped in and convinced the local Pharasmin church to carry on with the burial.
Afterwards, myself and several others were invited to the Professor's house for the reading of his will. There, I met his daughter Kendra as well as some of the others who had travelled to Ravengro for the funeral. A very colorful and varied bunch they are - Lament, a young halfling woman with a love of music and a talent for reading the cards. Jaru Toth, a Pharasmin priest, all the way from Osirion of all places! Simeon Plavini, scholar of the arcane, a strange but intelligent man; personal habits remind me of Etiel (you remember Etiel from down the street, yes?) and that's all I'll say on the matter. Vigilance Hall - cold, cold as ice, but extremely intelligent and observant. His heritage leads me to wonder if he hails from somewhere near the Worldwound, but I'd never dare to ask him. And finally, the elf who calls himself Nighteyes; obviously a seasoned warrior but extremely taciturn in nature. He reminds me of the old soldiers, the ones who've seen too much fighting - the way that they seem to look right through you and everything else as if it isn't even there.
At this point, I'm sure you've got many questions, the biggest one being - what was in the will? To make a long story short, I won't be able to return to Vigil for some time yet. Among other things, myself and the people that I mentioned in my previous paragraph have been tasked with aiding Kendra in setting her own affairs in order, for a period of one month from the reading of the will. At the end of that time, it has been requested that we deliver some old books to a colleague of the Professor's at the University in Lepidstadt. There will be some compensation for our time and effort as well, supposedly as much as 100 platinum pieces for each of us from the Professor's own funds! I'm sure you're thinking that it's an amazing sum for what seems to be a glorified babysitting job. Unfortunately, things here haven't turned out to be that simple.
It's at this point that I'm not sure of how to proceed. I don't know if outgoing correspondence is being examined or not and I'm unsure of how far the influence of certain forces can reach. Suffice it to say that things in Ravengro are not what they seem; there have been many strange events to take place since my companions and I arrived for the funeral. We have reason to believe that the Professor's death was not an accident, but deliberate murder - by who and for what purpose, we're still unsure. The more we dig, the more it becomes apparent that both the Professor and this town have points of darkness in their pasts. One thing I'm convinced of, is that the inhabitants of Ravengro as well as ourselves are in danger and something has to be done.
I'm sorry to worry you like this and I wish I could tell you more, but I'm afraid that sharing too much at this point might put both you and our parents in danger. Don't mention any of this to mother and father; they worry enough as it is when I have to leave Vigil for mundane matters. Pray to the Inheritor that my companions and I will be able to handle the situation that we find ourselves in; I'll write again in a few days.
Love,
Elidal

Dream vignette was nice. Any more honestly and it can get clunky. Also pacing is very good.
Since no one else seems to be jumping on it, I'll do another journal entry though Jaru isn't the best b/c he'll just be sticking with the facts and he missed the dust up at Zokars. Also he'll plain old gloss over b&e the crypt due to guilt and fear the journal might be used as evidence.

GM Helaman |

I wasn't sure how you'd play it if one of you actually heard the kids. Sometimes I throw out what I think is good stuff WITHOUT thinking through where it it will lead apart from a larger plot point.
Inspiration on the scene with Simeon the Nekidman came from an experience I had doing some church work and visiting a trailer park. In trying to find the family we were to visit we asked a few of the kids there.
Boy did they have some fun with us - we were in collared shirts and ties and scrubbed up nice, and they knew they were on to a good thing. Led us on a merry dance. They also happened to be the foulest mouthed 6-8 year olds I'd ever encountered. Sailors would have winced.
I've taken the essence of that encounter and cleaned it up some - we can have horror on one scene and some light comedy on the other. Never hurts to have a bit of light jocularity if timed right.
Hoping Simeon will also throw in a Journal entry as his previous ones have been terrific.

Baradlon"Nighteyes" Vontarfonel |

Foul mouthed children are hilarious (at least to me). I'm a teacher and most of my students fall in the 3.5-7 age range. Cute little buggers, but they can be annoying.

24. Calistril 4714
Today has indeed been a day of dark fortunes. The Professor’s body has been found, though in a state of utter defilement- animated by necromancy. It knocked upon the door in the early hours and unfortunately, Kendra answered. I do not know if she will recover from the shock. Nighteyes cut the zombie down with his great curved sword, but he seems quite unhinged by the experience as well.
A crowd of townsfolk quickly gathered at the disturbance and it was only with great difficulty that they were dispersed once again. Simeon only riled them further by openly casting a spell. He should certainly have known better. The locals are all superstitious fools fearful of any and nearly all magic. I was able to keep them at bay until the Sheriff arrived to send them home.
Upon inspection with Simeon, we found that the corpse’s lower jaw crushed and missing as is the custom of the Whispering Way cult. Surely, this is more evidence of their presence. Father Grimburrow has taken the corpse for safekeeping though I begin to wonder about the local Pharasmite’s competence.
The morning brought only further disappointment and trouble. Nighteyes accompanied me to the Temple and Father Grimburrow cast a spell to heal his injured psyche. We turned up nothing further in the archives, however. Another bitter disappointment was Grimburrow’s refusal to let us personally inspect the false crypt mentioned in the Professor’s notes. Instead, he gave us some more information on the prison’s history and directed us to speak with the local smith, a dwarf named Jorfa that is the town's longest lived resident.
The dwarf did not prove interested in a social visit however and it certainly didn’t help that Nighteyes insisted on playing bogeyman with the smith’s young apprentice. Perhaps Grimburrow’s spell was not all that effective after all. The psychotic elf also kept incessantly insisting that we break into the crypt despite not having permission. I flatly refused. He was slightly assuaged when the acolyte’s let us accompany them to replace the broken lock on the crypt which I assume was the Professor’s doing. A glance from outside was all we received however, for the acolytes continued to bar our entry.
Our situation only grew darker with the return of the others. Elidal made no headway with the council and some strange occurrence- I did not get the full story- led to another confrontation with the townsfolk at Zokar’s. Gibbs was involved of course and made horrible threats against Lament. He seems too simple to be a member of the Whispering Way, but I sense something dark behind his constant provocations.
The only dim ray of fortune granted us this day is that Lament has befriended the local herbalist named Jorminda who is thoughtfully caring for Kendra, may fate smile on her poor soul.
There is something else that I will not write about at the moment, but needless to say that I feel we are much better equipped for any threats now. Also, I fear that either the local Temple has not been effective in securing the sanctity of the Restlands or that a growing dark power has stirred the spirits there. We all witnessed haunts rising from the tombs of graves dating from the fire.

Jaru Toth |

I'd say 2 holy waters apiece for the others. I already have one and plenty of other options. A clw potion each, one extra for Nighteyes.
The ghost salt can be used to pretreat Nighteyes and Elidal's melee weapons.
Nighteyes- All the arrows plus the gold and sunrods to sell for a longbow.
Simeon- Darkwood case stuff.
Elidal- scrolls
Lament- other potions and I'll split the bolts with her.
