Shouldn't be too hard to do so (for me, anyway). This campaign strikes right to the heart for me; I'm a student of history myself, and though my focus is a few centuries later (and a country or two north), I am heavily into the pagan Europe as a whole. I'm something of a "philosophical heathen" and I write a considerable amount of poetry on heathenism and the subjugation of such cultures/abandonment of such customs and ways of life, so this campaign is cutting right into it as far as I'm concerned. I guess all I am trying to say is thanks for starting it and selecting me and I hope it lasts a good while!

The Saxons of the 5th century and the Vikings of the 7-10th weren't all that different from what I've been learning lately. I'm more of a panentheist myself in real life, but I certainly appreciate the animism and visceralness of the old ways. I'll keep it going as long as real life and players allow! :)

I know some have already said they aren't metal fans, but with a title like this I couldn't resist:
And here is some heathen mood music I listen to if anyone is interested. Some tunes I have going when I'm writing up posts (most below isn't metal):
'Runes Shall You Know'
'Nighttime in Sonnenheim'
'Sowilo Rune'
'Pantheist'
'Black Lake Nidstang' (super epic)

No, nobody got to purchase gear. You have a Seax. You have a set of armor if you want it (believe you took hide which is fine). You can have a bedroll, waterskin, etc. (basics) Anything beyond that you want, ask and I'll tell you if you can have it. Remember, there aren't really any stores or anything. There is the occasional trader, but the economic/technology level at this time and place is basically subsistence farming and raiding.

@ Berengar - No problem.
So to avoid cluttering up the gameplay thread too much I'm gonna go over a couple things for overland travel real quick.
-Not gonna worry about getting lost. You guys are skilled enough to get around
-I'm fine with you guys having a week's worth of rations. While you are in Saxon lands you should be able to find farms to stay in most nights, so you only need to use half rations for those days.
-I'm thinking we skip going day by day with all the details. That doesn't mean that you can't roleplay with each other during the trip, it just means I might post something like "day 1-3 was uneventful but then on the afternoon of day 4 blah blah blah"
-I'll draw a dotted red line on the campaign map as we go to track where you're at
Questions, comments, suggestions?

Yeah same here. I teach kids and it's our summer camp time so my work load is much higher than normal. My posting time has been small lately. I'll try to get something up today, either later this morning or before I go to bed tonight.
Jelani |
Ordric, this is to let you know that if I don't see a post from you by the time I go to bed tonight (6-7 hours from now) I'm gonna GMPC you for this round. I expect everyone to post basically every 24 hours when we're in combat (48 hours outside combat, or at least check the thread). If I don't hear from you, I will be taking your action for that turn. I will take the best action I can see that's available. If you know ahead of time you'll be offline/busy just pop a post here in the discussion.
It's not a punishment, it's just that if PBP games slow down too much they tend to die. So I like to keep mine moving.
Isegrimm |
I'm visiting friends, so my net access is limited the next few days. I'm going to go ahead and say that Ise and his men will head to the left to try and nail the guys on that flank when our init comes up. Ise in particular, will focus on trying to disarm/subdue one - the others, though, can just get ganked.
Jelani |
Oh, I interpreted back as back the way you came. I was wondering why you wanted that. So you want to move off the map? That's fine, I'll put you there instead. It's not really gonna make a difference in what happened though, longbows have 110' range.
In the future tell me either N->E->E->NE->whatever or say I move to square K14 or G11 or something and I'll put you exactly where you want to be. North is the top of the map unless otherwise stated.
Jelani |
I don't want to keep posting for people. Do we need to put the game on pause for a few days? Am I going too fast? Are people losing interest? Everybody please chime in if you're still around.
Odalric |
Additionally, I leave for work in about 5 hours and it looks like we are nearing the end of round 1. If we haven't moved on by then, let me know if you want me to post my actions for round 2 since I am at the top of initiative, that way if round 2 starts while I am at work I won't be holding things up.
Jelani |
I'll just relax my strictness a bit. It's only purpose is to keep the game from dying because one player is not posting enough or something. If everyone is really busy at the moment that's okay. I'll just wait for people to post unless it is taking excessively long.
Odalric, hold off on posting ahead. It's okay.
Jelani |
Yeah, that seems to be the case. I will try to be strict without pushing it too far and playing everyone's characters for them. Let me know if I'm stepping on anyone's toes. This should be about fun after all :)
Jelani |
Odalric, I'm not sure if you took weapon focus as a prereq for something else, but if not I'll let you trade it out for Power Attack. In case you haven't noticed yet, under the armor as DR system it's easy to hit, hard to do damage. Up to you, just throwing it out there since it's a new system to most people (including me).
Odalric |
I plan on picking up Dazzling Display, actually. Oh, also, I was wondering if you might be open to working up a custom barbarian archetype? I really want to emulate a bard/skald through future ranks in Perform (Oratory), so I was thinking maybe we could cook up something such as perhaps getting Inspire Courage and losing Trap Sense, possibly staggering the levels that it would improve as the bard's Inspire Courage doesn't increase as quickly as Trap Sense. I understand if you aren't open to the idea, but just thought I'd ask.
Jelani |
Is everyone cool with me just rolling your AOOs for you?
Also, Ealdfric is full up on games at the moment so that's out. I'd say since with the gedryhts it's already a lot of people to keep track of that it might be best to stick with four for now. If you guys start to get overwhelmed or feel like you really need the help I'll recruit another PC.
Isegrimm |
Normally I'd be cool with you rolling attacks of opportunity for us, but Ise will probably want to use one of various combat maneuvers to maintain an advantage over enemies (trip/disarm). Can I just post my intentions in the discussion thread/ooc part of my action?
And four players sounds fine.
DM Jelani |
I guess the best way to do it is to just post out of order if you can when you get an attack of opportunity. In cases where it might kill the enemy or seriously effect other people's turns I'll just pause combat until the person taking the AOO can post. It might slow things down a bit, but it will cause the least amount of possible retcons and confusion.
Ruhas |
I'll be gone for a few days starting tomorrow and I'll be back on Monday.
If you get to npc'ing Ruhas, he'll try to get distance between him and the wolves without exposing his horse or his cousins. If possible he'll shoot his bow, otherwise he'll opt for the saex. Similarly, his horse will attack the wolves, though not the big one as it scares him.
In addition Ruhas will be making ride checks to avoid damage to his horse from the big wolf, or the others if the big one missed anyway.
