Mattock of Torhold |
Mattock drops his pack.
"Last watch for me and a second dwarf, if you please, Falgard. I'll need an hour or so to study my spells in the morning and I'm typically not very alert to outside stimulus while I do so."
Struck a day's rations from Mattock's sheet. Still in heavy load with the pack, but after tomorrow it will be medium.
Falgard Dalvik |
Breifly pausing from setting up camp, Falgard looks around at the assembled Nalbrin.
"Right then. I'll take the first watch, I suppose..."
He begins to motion to each dwarf in order
"Trask, ye'll be next, followed by Ulfgar, and after that, Riuk. Mattock, ye'll be with the whelp. Make sure he doesn't get into any trouble" he says, ending the last sentence with an air of disdain.
"Any objections?"
Falgard
Trask
Ulfgar
Riuk
Mattock + Morg
Morg "Tinker" Blackflame |
You all awake or come out of your studious trance to the sound of trickling water and the sight of Morg's back as he sways back and forth.
He looks over his shoulder.
Top of the morning to ya. It's good to be alive! Any ideas?
Mattock of Torhold |
"Aye. We've another long day of marching ahead." He makes it sound like a lifetime prison sentence.
Mattock closes his heavy volume, winds it with string, and twists a small stick in the string to make sure the book can't accidentally open.
Then he helps with breakfast preparations.
Riuk Blood |
"yes, yes food. ..but what would be the best way to get down...."
Riuk said a loud as he thought
"well how much rope do we have...two could go down and then we can lower our gear and supplies with the rope, and then we all follow we might loose the ropes but I think it the safest way."

Ulfgar Helmhammer |
"There shouldn't be any need to leave gear behind..." Ulfgar offers, "we just need to find a natural pilar or a strong stalagmite... we can wrap a rope around it and drop both ends- we each climb down holding both ends as one rope then from the bottom we can grab one end and drag the whole rope around and down."
Riuk Blood |
" but you see the only issue with that is, the people that go down at the same time need to be equal weight and move in unison or else one snag and there there you go."
Riuk scratches his beard
" so I still think if we can get two of us to go down first and then we lower the gear to them with the ropes ,we can all then climb down with ease."

GM Sarpadian |
There's a narrow ledge that crosses the canyon. From your perspective it looks like a slight slope up from the end of the mining tunnel where you're standing to a peak that's over the middle of the river. If you want to use the ledge to get down to the riverbed, you'd be walking out on the ledge until you reach the middle of the river, and then dive off the ledge into the river. Theoretically, you could jump before you got to the river (and that's what will happen if you fail an Acrobatics check on the way), but you're more likely to get hurt that way.
Mechanically, what you're looking at a series of four Acrobatics checks to get to the diving point over the river (unless you have an ability that lets you use Acrobatics at full speed), and then an Acrobatics or Swim check for the dive itself. If you fail one of the first set of Acrobatics checks, you fall and take falling damage (as per normal rules, you get a DC 15 Acrobatics check to turn the 1st 10 ft. of fall into nonlethal damage). The falls associated with each check are all 20 ft., except for the last one (which is 30 ft.). If you make it to the diving point, succeeding on the final Acrobatics or Swim check allows you to completely negate the falling damage; if you fail the Acrobatics/Swim check, you'll take some nonlethal damage.
Does that help?
Mattock of Torhold |
Mattock slips a flask out of his pocket, and takes a long sip while he peers over the edge.
"That's a long way down."
Climbing seems more sensible than ledge-walking and diving. Unfortunately, I don't know spider climb. I like Nate's twisted rope plan, if we have enough rope. Sarpadian, how long is the climb?
Ulfgar Helmhammer |
Ulfgar ties his 50' silk rope to another and secures them around a large stalagmite relatively nearby. He gives the two trailing ends a few twists--enough to make them easier to hold as one, but not so many that it will be difficult to untangle them when the time comes to drag them down--before dropping them to the creek bed. "I'm not a strong climber... so I'll go first, that way if I fall I won't land on anyone..." he says before begining his descent...
climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
still 10' from the ground he loses his grip and plummets; falling back on his training he attempts to land safely...
acrobatics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Riuk Blood |
i am sooooo going to fall
Riuk looks over the ege
"well here goes nothing , climbing ive never been good at this..."
climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 1st check...
climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16i knoow ive have already fallen 2st check...
climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18no way that im here yet 3st check...
climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12look im already on the water why am i rolling... 4st check...
edit
SEE I TOLD YOUUUUUUUUU...thats the sound of me falling
"CCCRRRAAAAPPPP!!!!"
BYE!
riuk screamed as he fell
acrobatics: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Riuk Blood |
You only get an Acrobatics check to fall safely if you're falling on purpose. Riuk, where was your badger during this excursion?.
[dice=Ulfgar's falling damage]d6
[dice=Riuk's falling damage]2d6
she as a climb speed of 10' so its going slowly down to the bottom ^_^
Ulfgar Helmhammer |
technically the DC for climbing a rope against a wall is only 5, and you have to fail by 5 or more to fall... 4 or less and you just make no progress... I thought maybe if we were gonna be extra lethal with the climb checks we could be a little flexible with acrobatics? If we stick with RAW all around very few party members are capable of falling...
Falgard Dalvik |
"Oi, I hope those falls woke you lot up from your morning slumber. Did ye forget to grab the rope on yer way down?" Falgard taunts at the Dwarves below
Falgard should just be able to take 4 10s, unless the DC is higher than 17 (which I highly doubt). I'll roll anyways, just in case.
Climb: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Climb: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Climb: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
Climb: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Mattock of Torhold |
Mattock watches uneasily as the others take their turns on the rope.
On his turn he takes another sip from his flask before grasping the rope and shuffling slowly backward over the edge.
Climb, the first: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Climb, the second: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Climb, the third: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Climb, the fourth: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
I hope the DC is really 5 and that 1s are not autofails.
Riuk Blood |
Riuk gets up and moves to the side
"ohoh that could have been better"
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
oohh max!! ^+^
"ok lets not take up to much time ill scout ahead if you hear a cry of pain come quick..."
so riuk walks ahead of the group and moves down the way
Morg "Tinker" Blackflame |
If I took falling damage, please roll or let me know how much and I can. Hustle is descriptive, he walks.
Someone take the rear... Hold on, brother.
Morg hustles after Riuk.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Stealth: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Riuk Blood |
oh forgot the perception and stealth
perception riuk: 1d2 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 1113 to notice unusual stonework
perception Xo: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Stealth riuk: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
Stealth xo: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15
edit
well Xo nor I can see anything but I am a shadow ^_^
Ulfgar Helmhammer |
Ulfgar grumbles as he stands up and knocks the dust from his clothing. Then watches as the others follow him down with varying degrees of success. Those who fall he helps to their feet.
After everyone is down and more or less intact he waits for some separation from Riuk ond Morg, then begins following them.
GM Sarpadian |
Standing at the top of the cliff, the party redistributes their gear so that everyone can climb down safely. It takes a while, and some of the less athletically-inclined Nalbrin have to pause occasionally to steel themselves to the task before resuming their descent, but eventually the party reassembles at the bottom, none the worse for wear. Morg and Riuk scout out ahead, while the rest of the party follows behind them. The day passes uneventfully as the party strolls along the side of the underground riverbed. As the party pauses to eat dinner they notice landmarks that they've been told are just over a day's travel from the South Gate itself.
Mark off a day's rations. You've made eight hours of progress for the day at this point. One forced march check, today or tomorrow, will put you at the cave exit tomorrow night. Otherwise, you can exit early the day after tomorrow.
Mattock of Torhold |
As at every stop, Mattock shrugs off his pack eagerly.
For dinner, he rummages in his pack for food.
What do you guys think about pushing on. Mattock may complain, but I'm agreeable.
Riuk Blood |
im fine with it and i have a spell keep watch so i can stay up and still count as rested ^_^
GM Sarpadian |
That's four votes for pressing on, which is a majority, so I'm going to move things along.
The party decides to press on for an hour after supper in order to make the South Gate by tomorrow evening. By the time the party reaches a suitable campsite, Riuk and Trask are huffing and puffing.
Watch order? If you want to keep the same one all the time, that's fine with me, but I didn't want to assume that.
Morg "Tinker" Blackflame |
Whatever the reason for the order, probably still holds true. Mattock spell prep and Morg being a softy.
Seeing the two winded, Morg starts to set up camp, tents, etc... If is was easy, they wouldn't have picked us, brethren.
Riuk Blood |
"wow that was harder than i thought not used to having this much weight on me..."
Riuk said out of breath
and then he cast a spellKeep watch
"Oh great Easivra keep my eyes strong for the night so i may not let harm fall on my companions..."Riuk said a prayer
"ok,i should be fine with watch all night you all get some rest.."
