Falgard Dalvik |
"If you sluggish lot are finally ready, let's move before the mountains erode to naught but plains." Falgard says, obviously tired of sitting around. Quickly hefting his pack, he starts off towards the Gate without waiting for the others to follow.
Falgard will take the lead.

Falgard Dalvik |
Ah, my bad. I guess I saw
he gives his kin some distance, a few strides, and follows
and assumed you guys were taking up the rear. I suppose Falgard will go second then, behind Riuk and ahead of Morg. He doesn't trust the new guy enough to let him be in front.
Morg "Tinker" Blackflame |
Morg takes up whatever position makes the bristly warrior happy. There was no need for admonishment, but it wasn't the time for a lecture.
He wanted to warn the fool, not to let anything happen to brother and badger. But there was no point to that, either.
The narrow framed dwarf considered his options and silently took up rear guard.
GM Sarpadian |
The party successfully navigates their way out of the market district, through the outlying clan warrens, and into an old, abandoned mining tunnel that leads towards the South Gate. Several hours later the tunnel opens up into a cavern that reaches almost to the edge of your darkvision. Perched on a ledge overlooking the tunnel that exits the other side of the cavern is a creature resembling a dwarf-sized crab. It doesn't seem to have noticed you.
[spoiler=Mattock]You recognize this creature to be a cave fisher. It shouldn't pose much of a threat to the six of you. You know that spells designed to influence a mind will not work on cave fishers; they don't have a mind to affect. Also, glands in its torso are sought after for crafting sticky magic items.
Riuk Blood |
Riuk stops he sets his pack down slowly...
Wispering to the group
"stop there see that crab nasty thing, should be easy for us to take...come on tinker let's see what you've learned in the mountain. .."
Riul draws his bow and takes aim at the crab
ready action if i can...to attack once it moves and if the party decides to attack. I'll fire as they move up to do so...

I'll have you know that is my brother your taking about. He's young and kinda impulsive but he means well...^_^

Falgard Dalvik |
Though he is thoroughly annoyed at the interruption, Falgard stops in his tracks. Letting out a low sigh, he grabs hold of his hammer and assumes a defensive stance.
Alright, whelp. Let's see if ye can do anything other than make a fool of yeself. I won't be holdin' my breath, 'f course.
Ready action to attack the crab if it draws near. He'll hold back and give Morg a chance, but if the situation gets hairy he won't hesitate to interfere.
I'll have you know that is my brother your taking about. He's young and kinda impulsive but he means well...^_^
Oh, of course. But my grumpy old drill sergeant doesn't much care for "young and impulsive" :)
Ulfgar Helmhammer |
Ulfgar takes up a position in the middle of the pack...
I better be able to reach each of them quickly in case they need saving...
When Riuk and Falgard stop and point out the fisher, he stops as well and slips out of his pack. Whispering, he asks "Can you use your ranged weapons to draw it down where we can engage it?"
Riuk Blood |
"I can but I want to see what my brother can do to it first. .."
Riuk whispered back
I like that even though your character dose not like him he understands the need to test morg and see his worth ^_^

Sorry, I messed up that last post. Riuk was entitled to two pieces of information, which I forgot to include (by the way, Mattock, your information is in Riuk's spoiler; I messed up the spoiler code and didn't notice until it was too late to edit it.) The actions that you're posting right now are your surprise round actions, but I'll go ahead and roll for initative and put it in a spoiler at the top of the page.
Mattock of Torhold |
I guess that leaves Mattock bringing up the tail end of the group.
When the party stops, Mattock's hand lands heavily on Ulfgar's shoulder. The wizard dwarf wheezes, "A cave fisher! Take care. They're too stupid to do anything but get mad."
He pushes forward into the center of the group.
Ready action to activate Protective Ward. +1 Deflection bonus to AC to all allies within 10'
As a standard action, you can create a 10-foot-radius field of protective magic centered on you that lasts for a number of rounds equal to your Intelligence modifier. All allies in this area (including you) receive a +1 deflection bonus to their AC. This bonus increases by +1 for every five wizard levels you possess. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Intelligence modifier.
GM Sarpadian |
As Mattock pushes his way into the center of the party, a slight shimmer covers each of them. Morg's crossbow shot glances off an outcropping in front of the cave fisher. Trask readies his drum and calls out, "Watch out! These things can spit filaments that will drag any one of us up there with it!"
THat's the surprise round. Falgard and Mattock are up for Round 1.
Mattock of Torhold |
Having done what he could to bolster the party, Mattock shrugs off his pack and swings his crossbow forward so that he can step into its stirrup and lever back the cord. He places a quarrel in the slot and raises the weapon toward the arachnoid threat.
Two move actions there. Next round he can fire, if it's still alive. What's the range to the fisher?
Falgard Dalvik |
Right then. So much for giving the whelp a chance.
Now that the cave fisher seems to have noticed them, Falgard steps to the front of the group and prepares to strike when it draws near.
"Stick together, men. Riuk, draw that thing down here. Maybe ye can actually hit the thing" he says, sending a quick glare at Morg.
Without a map, it's difficult to gauge where I go, but I use my move to step to a convenient location and continue to ready an action to attack the fisher. If it's far enough away, I'll instead use my turn to get close enough to attack next round.
GM Sarpadian |
I understand the frustration with no map, and I'll usually make one, but my skills aren't up to a 3-D fight like this one. The cave fisher is 60' ahead and 30' off the cavern floor. Are you wanting to try to climb up there, Falgard? That's the only way you'll be able to get into melee range under your own power.
The cave fisher moves forward a little onto the edge of his ledge and a sends a filament in the direction from which the bolt that awoke him came. It strikes Morg squarely in the chest and pulls him off his feet and towards the gaping maw of the cave fisher.
Morg is now 10 ft. ahead and 5 ft. in the air. Party up.
Riuk Blood |
did i still have my ready action? i had my bow drawn ready for attack if it came forward..ill play as if i did not
as his brother is stuck in the chest Riuk fires his bow his hands are a blur firing two shots within the blink of an eye
Flurry bow 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Flurry bow 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
in his shock of the event Riuk fires short and wide if the Cave fisher
"TINKER!!!"
Riuk screams as morg is puled towards the beast
"XO!! cut the line!"
Riuk commands his badger and it runs forward and jumps to cut the line with its teeth
attack on the line: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
GM Sarpadian |
Yes, Morg, you missed a flat-footed creature who was laying down and therefore had partial cover; the bonus for partial cover outweighed the penalty for flat-footed, as it happened. The badger needs to make an Acrobatics check to even reach the filament. Morg's feet are 5 ft. off the ground, and the filament is at least 2 ft. up from there. The DC to jump 5 ft. in the air is 20. If the badger makes it, then he can climb up Morg and attack the filament.
With a bounding leap, Riuk's badger vaults onto Morg, climbs up his legs, and sinks his teeth into the cave fisher's filament, but he is unable to completely sever it. Ulfgar runs over and grabs Morg's feet.
Morg, you may try to get loose by either ripping the filament free (Strength check) or wriggling free (Escape Artist check).
badger's Acrobatics: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23badger bite: 1d3 ⇒ 2
Mattock of Torhold |
Watching the cave fisher snag Morg, Mattock sucks in a hard breath. Better make this count.
From the spoiler at the top of the page:
Falgard 21
Mattock 21
Cave Fisher 18
Ulfgar 14
Morg 11
Riuk 9
Trask 4
Ulfgar's grabbed Morg. Riuk's fired his arrows. You and Trask're up.
Edit: Ninja'd by your edit.
Riuk Blood |
by you It mean me?
Riuk's hands are a blur as he fires two shots at the beast
bow flurry: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
bow flurry 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
The arrows strike home
bow 1: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
bow 2: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
GM Sarpadian |
The filament, which is the only thing you can reach, does have DR. Falgard PM'd me about switching to a bow shot, so I'll roll for that, and I'm going to bot Trask so that we can keep moving.
Falgard's bow shot strikes the creature. Morg's fists bounce right off the filament. Trask begins beating on his drum.
Trask is beginning a raging song.
Indicate in your post if you're accepting the song or not. Falgard and Mattock are up for the beginning of round two.
Falgard Dalvik |
Ye sure are good at gettin' yeself in trouble, whelp
Falgard sighs and yells out "Someone cut that fool loose!" before stepping forward and firing off another shot at the creature.
Bow Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Move 20ft forward
Don't accept raging song
Thanks for rolling that for me, GM. Wasn't able to get to my comp for a bit.
Mattock of Torhold |
Mattock feels the mental pull of the drum. It is so easy, so inviting to lose himself in the angry beat, to slip the bonds of memory and take his axe....
He pulls himself back with a jerk and exhales, long and slow while he drops the nose of the crossbow down unto the fisher. He squeezes the trigger...
Crossbow v Cave Fisher: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 ... damage: 1d10 ⇒ 2
"Stop that devil-cursed drum! How can a dwarf aim with that beat."
No, real criticism meant. Just some RP frustration. That's a pretty good melee buff.
GM Sarpadian |
Not sure how to handle this with Ulfgar holding Morg's feet. I think I'll give Ulfgar and the cave fisher opposed Strength checks. If the cave fisher wins by 5, he manages to pull hard enough to rip Morg loose; if Ulfgar wins by 5, he can rip Morg free. If the difference is less than 5, the struggle continues...
Falgard's arrow glances off the creature's chitinous hide, and Mattock's bolt strikes the ledge below it. Mindless of the projectiles being directed at it, the cave fisher continues trying to reel in its meal, but Ulfgar is able to keep a grip on Morg's feet and keep him from going anywhere.
Riuk already posted an action, but Ulfgar, Morg, and Trask are up.
GM Sarpadian |
Nice roll, Ulfgar. If you'd hit 20, the filament would have snapped whether you wanted it to or not :)
Ulfgar drags the cave fisher off the ledge, and it lands on its skull, which caves in with a SQUISH sound.
Combat over. You each receive 100 XP.
Str check (cave fisher): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9falling damage: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 1) = 8
Riuk Blood |
Riuk looks to ulgfar and claps him on the back
"nice work my friend impressive, now you!"
Riuk said as he walked up to his brother yanking him to his feet
"so...that's what you've learned, I said don't don't get too close to it and this will be easy pray for you...ooh you have some way to go boy. At least you're alive...thank you Ulgfar for that...well let's continue then shall we"
Riuk picks up his pack why you give him a chance and this...I can't let that happen again...oh what would she do if I came back and he was dead...
Riuk looks back the way they came ...to late to send him back though best press on he thought to himself
"come on men that won't be the last issue we will face in the coming weeks. ..not by a long shot..."
Riul takes the lead again
"come one xo"
He called to the bagger and she ran up next to him

Mattock of Torhold |
"I'd guess nothing ushful. It's too stupid t' collect anything, but there might be some poor soul's remainsh up there. "
Mattock limbers his axe as he strides up to the cave fisher. "WHAT they have got is glands useful for spell components and whatnot."
He drives the axe into the middle of the fisher's dorsal carapace and pries it apart.
out of ti
me.
Morg "Tinker" Blackflame |
I may not have been able to digest certain... gear.
Morg produces his any-tool, ensuring it is formed into a grapnel. Threading it with rope, he tosses it and begins to ascend.
climb: 1d20 ⇒ 17
DC 5, rope w/wall? We can hand wave this, just a "sideways" thought.
Falgard Dalvik |
Falgard nods approvingly at Ulfgar before turning to Morg and whacking him upside the head.
"Ye call yeself a member of the Nalbrin?! Ye're lucky ye have Ulfgar here to save yer scrawny excuse fer a body. And missin' a sleepin' target! Ye couldn't hit a giant's thigh if it were an inch in front of yer face! If yer gonna be shootin' a crossbow, ye'd damn well learn to use the thing first! I pray the day never comes when I need rely on ye to save me life, fer that be the day I die!" Falgard screams in the young dwarf's face.
Pausing for a moment to compose himself, Falgard puts away his bow and takes a deep breath.
"If'n ye want to continue with us, ye'd best get a proper head on yer shoulders, whelp. We may not always be able to save ye, nor should we need to."
He gives Morg a final whack for good measure, before turning to the rest of the dwarves.
"Right then, let's continue on."

As falgard is yelling at morg
"now you see here, that's my blood and the one to correct him will be me! Yes he has some way to go but if I correct him. That's family. ..but if your lay a hand on the boy, he nor I will jump at the your side when you need it...is that clear! Having almost died one dose need to be attacked by the very ones that are supposed to help him, who dose that help, seeing as you did nothing to help the situation did you ..don't do that again..."
Turning to Morg
"get to the front you, you still got some way to go let's go"

Morg "Tinker" Blackflame |
Morg winces with each whack, but holds his tongue until the grumpus is finished.
I though letting it draw me up would be faster than climbing. Did you notice how my shot ever so cleverly, made it choose me?
And Riuk, let him do as he please. I think folks should express themselves. I think he's starting to like me.
Morg moves to point.
perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
GM Sarpadian |
The party resumes moving. You travel along the abandoned mine shaft for several more hours until it plays out into a large cavern. A broad underground river flows along the floor of the cavern (about 30 ft. down), approximately in the way you want to go, with the plenty of space on either side for the party to walk abreast. To reach it, however, you will have to either climb down the cavern's side or carefully walk down a narrow ledge that forms an archway over the river and drop down into it. Needing a rest, the party pauses at the mouth of the mining tunnel and contemplates the next move.
At this point you've made your 8 hours of progress for the day. If you want to keep going, you'll need to start making forced march checks; alternatively, you can camp here for the night. Whenever you decide to head down, you'll need to either make a Climb check, an Acrobatics check, or come up with another plan I haven't thought of (which I encourage, by the way).
Mattock of Torhold |
Mattock slumps against the side of the tunnel. "The lad's right. We've done enough today, and we can face the climb or the bridge tomorrow morning. This position is defensible from the river and we've only the tunnel to protect on the other side."
