I spent some time with my friend last night and had a trout-off.
Now that there has been sufficient time for those who needed to keep up to do so, well...

I have several possible theories what a trout-off might be.

Bard or cleric. Call it what it is. I win when my friends do. :) And keeping them alive and healthy is AWESOME.

Low levels. Then, by the time I'm at a high level, I feel I've earned it.

I'm rather partial to barbarians. I'd rank monks higher if it didn't come attached with all the silly mysticism and kung-fu business.

Math early on. As I got older I grew to appreciate history.

I assume you're talking about the tropes detailed here?

If so, I'd probably be a mix of the Explorer and Actor.

I have the most fun with lower-middle levels (but not level 1!). In my opinion the sweet spot for 3.5/SRD is 2-7ish. I put up with higher level stuff mostly because I get attached to the character. I'd really like to play in a E6 (or some variation) campaign but I've never been able to join one.

I've been through the tropes, got lost in them for hours. My attention was once called to it from a particular recruitment thread here in the forums, and it was a very interesting surprise. I ended up developing an anthipathy for the tropes in the end, because it seemed everything revolved too much around them (in the recruitment), and I wasn't picked after scavenging hell and earth for a compelling background [I'm done doing extensive backgrounds for my PbP characters btw :D] - in any case, Sergeant Rock definitely. My favorite RPG character of all times was a Sergeant, whom I played in a GURPS/Cyberpunk/Supers/Fantasy setting - and he was right on the money as Serg. Rock.

4.What are your preffered levels of play?

I am growing kind of weary of low level play - I would say that my current favourite levels would be 5-12. The characters start gaining options and mechanical capabilities, and the groups either turn up their A game or they just become disfunctional, with everyone playing his own character instead of their part in the group.

Of course, the last time I played around those levels, Feral kept saying we were overpowered, and insisted our group to be split in two to give our GM a chance :D

Yup. That's one things that becomes more prevalent at higher level play. With low level play if you have some optimized characters you can mitigate them by just adding more monsters or altering them in very subtle ways. The end result will still be satisfying for the players.

At higher levels the only way to mitigate optimized characters involves either directly countering them or raising the overall bar. Countering them leaves players frustrated. Raising the overall bar can exclude people that aren't interested in optimization and/or lead to a problem I call, the Deos Theory. Splitting the party was an bandaid fix for the overall problem.

I gotta say my character was one of the non-optimized ones - my familiar was nothing amazing, a big cat is all, but the group was really mowing them down like there was no tomorrow :D

Of course! But only one will connect to a campaign heading at a time.

That's actually not true Trout. You can connect multiple gameplay threads to the same campaign. That's what we ended up doing in the game I was in with Zeltor.

That was the idea. One group would stay at the 'base' and handle things at home while the other went out into the desert and handled the necessary tasks. Unfortunately the campaign died before we got much further.

That sounds like it would've been fun- Shame :(

Ultimately the campaign died because the DM's work life got too busy but the secondary cause of death was losing some really great momentum early on due to catering to the slower posters. We never really recovered from that.
