It's been a tough 26 years for the new colony of SouthWelshland. The magic that makes life so easy in Londinium does not seem to function the same way twice in this strange land. Continual flame street lamps blowing up and almost burning Sydinium to the ground in the first year. Teams of unseen servants set to work the land going wild and even attacking their masters. Even the great sky ships come crashing to the ground randomly without any known cause!
The solution was to build the colony on the back of prisoners, a solution that is also helping to clear out the streets of Londinium without the pressure of adding extra dementional space to the prisons!
In 1813 a path was found over the great mountain range in the west. Lush grasslands were found on the other side and Governess Maquarie ordered a road built to the other side and the first inland town called Bastion (Bass-Tee-on) to be founded. In 1814 thirty-four convicts set out to build the road under the whip, which brings us to our story...
Four convicts sit in the shadows of the great mountains watching the sun fall in the west. Caught for crimes real or imagined, chained together and forced to build a road, Bralla, Bruce, Roland, and Rueben.
Today is the anniversary of the founding of SouthWelshland and 8 of the guards are celebrating over by their own bonfire about 65ft away. Two guards are posted near you (about 15ft away) to watch over the convicts but they've snuck a bottle away from the party and as the darkness deepens you watch them drink themselves into a stupor. Perhaps tonight is the opportunity for a daring escape!
The four of you are chained together by the right ankle and the chain is bolted to a stake in the ground. You also don't have your gear, except for perhaps one secreted item as small or smaller than a dagger (slight of hand DC14)
The camp is surrounded by bushland except for the area you've been clearing for the road. Ghostly white trunks of gumtrees sprout out of the thick underbrush. A couple of miles to the south on a hill, you can see the lighted window from a house of some kind.
Ruben "aces" Payne |
Ruben..or Aces as he is know to his friends and sometimes adversaiers looks to his compainions.
"well it seems tonight might be the time we finaly get to roll the dice...whos up for a gamble?"
Roland "Rev" Graves |
Rev tugs his leg, testing the strength of the chain and how well it actually is driven into the ground.
"If I have to hear Bruce snoring for one more night, I might just flip out. Let us get the hell away from here."
Bralla |
"Hmph. Tools or arms? Help me pull this stake out. Then we kill guards, yes?"
Stength check 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
"Maybe tools then..." The half-orc takes off his boot, and spills the contents in front of him. He choose a few small tools and sets to work on the bolt containing him and his friends.
Disable Device 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Squinting at the immobile chains, he says to the other three, "Maybe you do it."
The Bruce |
Slowly rising from the dirt with an absent grin, Bruce makes his way over to the stake. "Heh, I help" he says happily. Gripping the stake with both hands, he heaves.
Strength check 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Ruben "aces" Payne |
"Ah Bralla sorry I dont seem to have the skills for that but lets see if we all cant work together to try and pull out this stake...I have no plans on getting stuck here tonight"
Assists Bruce 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (2) + 0 = 2
Slight of hand 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25 to find the blade hiden in belt
"we will have to go quite for the guards....and see if we can make them meet the great dealer in the Sky"
Roland "Rev" Graves |
Rev reaches over and takes the lock picks off of Bralla, giving him a quick nod of thanks.
"By Gods, what are these things made of?" He says, handing the tools back to Bralla and glaring at the lock around his ankle. Pulling the dagger out of his boot, Rev starts chipping away at the dirt at the base of the spike to help the others.
Kip84 |
After a few minutes of hushed conversation and picking at the locks of your linked manacles, Bruce gives one last massive heave on the chain while Rev loosens the dirt around the stake with his dagger. The two foot long stake comes free all of a sudden and Bruce has to take a quick step back to steady himself. You can move about now as a group ( your all still linked together at the right ankles )
The two guards nearby are now slumped against a felled tree with their backs to you. You hear the loud snoring of one but the one on the right is humming softly and every so often breaks into a fit of giggles and murmuring. Maybe he's dreaming but you can't be sure without seeing his face.
60ft away you can see three guards still up, silhouetted against the fire but it looks like most of them have turned in.
Roland "Rev" Graves |
Roland deftly spins the knife in his hand after the stake is out of the ground, stopping it so he is holding the handle out towards Bruce.
"You'll put this to more use than I. I think our next step should be sneaking up on the two that are meant to be watching over us, and take them out quietly and brutally. Mayhaps they will have keys, or even more usefully a gun."
Bralla |
Bralla motions for the dagger from Ace.
He whispers “Yup, me and Bruce can make sure that they tell no more lies.”

Aces hands the knife to bralla..."I hope your work is good, I will help the best I can"
To the group "Lets go quietly now, I will hold one quiet as you finish him"

Aiding Bruce with his attack.
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
The Rev deliberately scuffs his boot just as Bruce lunges at the Guard, hoping to draw his attention.
Kip84 |
Due to their alcohol induced stupor the two guards don't notice the low clink of the chain as you cross the empty space towards them nor do they notice the scuff of The Rev's boot as you go for the kill
Aces reaches over the log and grabs the humming guard over his mouth and pulls the chin back while also arresting his right arm, Bralla is then able to make short work of this guards jugular. coup de grace extra dmg 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
While Bruce makes easy work of the sleeping guard shoving his dagger through his eye with both hands up to the hilt! coup de grace extra dmg 1d4 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Ruben "aces" Payne |
Aces wipes his now blood staind hands on the guards uniform and begins to search the body for anything usful.
" nice work lads now lets see if we cant get free, but keep and eye out for any other guards"
Aces takes one of the rifles and loads it handing the other to "Rev"
Aces wispers to Rev "shoot straight friend, just dont roll the devils eyes"
Bralla |
Bralla wipes the blood from the dagger on the ground and tucks it into his trousers. He is a deeply happy man at the moment.
He quietly takes the keys from the dead guard and begins going through them to find the right one. Eventually the half-orc unlocks the small group, and they murmur together debating what to do next.
Otherwise: 1d20 ⇒ 19
Roland "Rev" Graves |
Rev surveys Bruce, a wry smile as he watches him. He reaches across, straightening his tricone and doing up the buttons to make him look like an actual guard.
Disguise Check if he needs one with the Uniform; 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

Rev turns and secures himself a Knife from the other fallen guard, tucking it into his newly released boot.
The Rev will also keep an eye out for the guards and any approaching noises.

Aces doesn't manage to find anything on the guard he thinks will be useful
Bralla has no trouble unlocking the chains around your ankles
Bruce looks spiffy in his slightly tight guards uniform
Rev the three guards that are still awake are still drinking and laughing. They don't seem to have noticed your escape yet.
Bralla |
Picking his way carefully, Bralla heads to the left of the guard’s tent. He skirts round the long way to the side opposite those guards who are still awake. He stops to listen carefully at the tent before slicing a vertical line into it.
The Bruce |
Bruce settles a mean expression on his face as he picks his way noisily to the opposite side of the clearing to Bralla and Rev, keeping a surreptitious eye on the guards.
Once he reaches the opposite side of the clearing, he begins urinating noisily on a tree and moaning gratefully
Ruben "aces" Payne |
After a quick whisper about the plan aces takes the other rifle, slinging it onto his back loaded and ready..he tucks spare dagger into his belt.
Looking across to the camp Aces moves slowy to take up an overwatch position
Aces reaches into his pockets searching for his lucky charm a card an Ace of Diamonds, tattered and worn...he kisses it for luck and looks down the sights lining up one of the guards.
Damage 2d6 ⇒ (5, 2) = 7
Aces will then grab the other rifle readied for another shot.
Roland "Rev" Graves |
Roland follows behind Bralla, keeping close and quiet with his knife now in hand. He tenses himself, readying himself if he sees any movement in the tent to quickly strike out at them. (If there is none, he will charge through the new doorway and bring his knife down into the first guy he sees.)

Bralla you rush into the tent and jump on the guard to the left, you bury your dagger into his belly and give it a savage twist. His eyes pop open wide and he let's out an ear piercing scream that fades into a low gurgle as he chokes on his own blood!
Outside the tent all the guards turn their heads to the sound of Bruce relieving himself one of them jumps up "Bill? Jake?" he turns to one of the others "Better check it out."
They get most of the way (about a ten feet away) across the clearing towards Bruce and then they whirl around in response to the blood curdling scream coming from the tent.
The guard that was left behind at the fire jumps up grabs his gun and makes for the tent only to be shot in the shoulder by Ruben. The guard spins around to look for the source of the shot and starts walking up the hill towards Ruben.

And there are Five in the tent, two now dead.
The other three are still asleep, or are they awake and this a Surprise Round for them, or ???
Bralla |
Thank you, Kip – you have a big job to cover everything, it’s always going to be very difficult to get it all in on one post.
Bralla quickly moves to the nearest guard and gives him a dagger-load of love into the side of his neck. The orc kisses the guard’s forehead as he wrenches the dagger free.

If your opponent is trained in Sense Motive, the DC is instead equal to 10 + your opponent's Sense Motive bonus, if higher. If successful, the next melee attack you make against the target does not allow him to use his Dexterity bonus to AC (if any). This attack must be made on or before your next turn.

This is my copycat ability; Works like mirror image but I only get one figment. This is a move action.
"Whenever you are attacked or are the target of a spell that requires an attack roll, there
is a possibility that the attack targets one of your images instead. If
the attack is a hit, roll randomly to see whether the selected target
is real or a figment. If it is a figment, the figment is destroyed. If the
attack misses by 5 or less, one of your figments is destroyed by the
near miss."
