A night of revelry at the Formidably Maid sees four unlucky patrons become the latest additions to the crew of the Wormwood. Will the newcomers thrive in their new positions or become food for the sharks?

A Question for Our Awesome GM:

You stated earlier what attracted you to Jasmine and Seijiro, but what was it about Allysen and Amerdan that made you pick them out of so many submissions?

I liked Amerdan's connection to the Master of the Gales, Golarion and Tempest Cay in general. I also like the weather theme going on there, not only will it be useful, but it's neat. He also has the whole "hermit guy on an island" feel.

Allysen's down on her luck, things always go wrong, feel mixed in with a lifelong sailor just fit the "oh, yes, OF COURSE!" feel of being press ganged to the Wormwood. There is also a slight Arya Stark feel to her from the tomboy angle (as was mentioned before).

Admittedly, I'm somewhat displeased there was not a tatoo of the weather vane rooster on his chest. LOL. Hey, Jasmine has a kink for ink. LOL

Game Master

In adventure 2 there's a great pirate captain whose nickname is "Inkskin".

She has calligraphy craft skill for a dual purpose: being a scribe or inscribing tatoos.

Pirate Slang:
  • Adrift: Floating loose at sea. Can also mean someone who has run away or gone missing.
  • Anchor: A person who wears heavy metal armor.
  • Besmara’s Fingers: A-cat-o’-nine-tails.
  • Binnacle: A glass-topped box fixed to a stand on the deck. The binnacle houses a compass.
  • Bubbles: A person who can’t swim.
  • Cannon: A spellcaster with flashy offensive spells.
  • Captain’s Dance: When two ships meet in open water and wish to parlay, each ship sends out a boat. The two captains meet on one ship; the two first mates meet on the other.
  • Chase: A ship that is being pursued by pirates.
  • Coaming: A raised lip around a hatch to keep water from spilling belowdecks.
  • Fancy Jacket: Someone who dresses and talks like a pirate but has no real sailing experience.
  • Fast Colors: A country’s flag. Privateers sometimes fly pirate or merchant flags to lure pirate ships close, then raise their true flags when combat begins.
  • Fishslicer: A small blade, like a dagger.
  • Following Sea: Waves going in the same direction as a ship.
  • Frenzy: A fight, particularly a tavern brawl.
  • Gallows Jumper: Someone who has died and then come back to life, such as through a raise dead spell.
  • Holystone: Bars of sandstone used to scrub the deck.
  • Jack Tar: A pirate.
  • Lights: Lungs. (The “lights” in famous exclamations like “I’ll have your liver and lights!” actually refers to lungs, rather than eyes, as landlubbers often imagine.)
  • Lubber: A clumsy or stupid person, often a “landlubber.”
  • Paying Cargo: Passengers.
  • Running Lunch: A rat or large insect. Sailors sometimes joke that a new crewman must “catch himself a running lunch.”
  • Scaly: A fish. Can also refer to a sea monster.
  • Sea Legs: The ability to maintain balance on a rolling deck.
  • The Sweet Trade: Piracy.
  • Windbound: Unable to set sail because of wind conditions. Can mean any situation in which a person cannot act because of outside
    circumstances.
  • Windspinner: A spellcaster, specifically one who possesses weather magic.
  • X-er: A treasure hunter—someone always looking for “the X that marks the spot.” Can also mean a Pathfinder.

How are you going to handle XP and eventual leveling up?

Game Master

I'll dole out XP when the adventure gives it in an OOC comment on the gameplay thread. When you guys finally hit the magic number to level, you can just do so. I'll just remind people to level up their characters when you guys reach that point. The only houserule I have with HP is that you choose either average, rounded down (1d6=3, 1d8=4, 1d10=5, 1d12=6), or you can roll (re-roll 1s), but you choose beforehand.

As a d6 character it is a no-brainer, especally if 1's are redo's.

Game Master

Oh, and Amerdan, you'll be meeting your familiar tomorrow so don't worry about not being able to memorize spells. I just need to know if you prefer the otter being already your familiar, or if you lost your old familiar and this one replaces it.

There are no penalties or costs for either choice.

The hatred for Plugg and Scourge is incredible. What is cool is there is hint of CoC in the game with the psychological build up and feeling being helpless. I like it...very edgy, I enjoy the RP and intellect. Don't get me wrong, I like creating damage and havoc too but that will come.

Male Human Sea witch 1, Init +2, AC 12, Fort +1, Ref +2, Will +4

Ooh, I'll go with a new familiar. Amerdan adopted Bethesda's raven familiar after she passed, but the same day the northern wind came calling, the bird had flown from the driftwood cottage on Tempest Cay and the empathic link had mysteriously dissolved.

Good thing I'm already an ass to my characters, otherwise I don't know if I could play Allysen for too long. Good stuff so far.

Game Master

The first part of the adventure is really CoCesque in that regards. It puts PCs in a position that they're not used to being in: unable to just bash a problem down into goo. That comes later. :D

I gotta say, it's a good thing that I'm playing a witch. As a player, I've got a mean retributive streak (I tend to over-react and whip out a flashy evocation when provoked), so I'm lucky that my lack of blasting is preventing my natural instincts from getting me killed.

Game Master

Ohhhh... maybe.

But not anytime soon.

To let you a bit behind the screen, Scourge is a fighter 2/rogue 2 and Plugg is a fighter 5; so yes, so very dead.

Game Master

For certain! For Skull & Shackles I think a very diverse party is the best way to go since everyone was a victim of impressment and the press gang didn't exactly walk around asking for people's character sheets. It also allows a huge range of RP possibilities with the NPCs and ways to approach problems depending on personality/alignment and whatnot.

Ah. Well I must be a right bastard. I have two groups running through a Homebrew, and they're having to fight 10 or 11 Rogue 1s and a Ranger 3/ Rogue 1. Not at the same time but back to back. Well one group is fighting 11 rogues, the other managed not to alert the others by letting one of the rogues from the first fight escape. They got to knock drunk rogues further into dreamland.

For me this is the first PbP that hasn't disintegrated after the first 50 posts due to absentee GMs, so this is my first real online game as well. That being said, I get the sense that I'm in a totally different time zone than everybody else (I'm PST).

EDT-

I run two games in RT, one just finished acutally after 5 years or so, the second one is a kingmaker (almost 2 years going). I play in a Deadlands game, and the game that I DM'd for 5 years someone else is picking up the time for bit. Right now we are playing a little CoC. Fortunately, I'm in great gaming group.

CST for me, so not too bad.

I am bit of a PBP addict. 17 different characters that have at one point or another been in a PBP game. That's not counting the aliases for the Homebrew campaign.

Interesting. There's a comic/game store down there now called "Comic Quest," over where Lake Forest turns into Laguna Hills, close to where El Toro passes under the 5 South. Same location, different owner?

Male Human Sea witch 1, Init +2, AC 12, Fort +1, Ref +2, Will +4

I must say, I'm surprised by how taken I am with PbP. Part of the attraction for me at least to tabletop gaming is the narrative element, and with the variety of text options that are available on the messageboards (speech vs. inner monologue vs. ooc, etc.), the storytelling aspect is really magnified. Gameplay is surprisingly swift too.

Nope - we closed our store rather than sold it when the marine base closed - we just lost too many customers. Maybe if we sold comics too, that might have made a difference, but we were strictly a game store.
