Marnir and Markizio combine to cut one Sahaugin to pieces.

Jane finishes making dinner. "I'll head to bed early and catch the early morning shift." she says before departing.

Are you sure you want to do that?

Night falls quickly with the Drake surrounded by cliff walls, it's very dark in the cove with the overhanging vines and the crew gives uneasy glances over their heads as they eat the evening meal, take their grog and retire below in pairs and groups.

Only an hour later, still evening rather than late night there is a howl from the deck, and the alarm bell is rung desperately.

Cove Beast map up top. The green lines are the overhanging vines. The Beast of Mancatcher cove is currently 20 feet above you.

You race on deck to see - What at first appeared to be nothing more than a tangle of thick, twisted vines growing among the canopy above has suddenly coiled itself into a large mass dangling high above. A large beaklike maw emerges from the center of the fecund mass, numerous thick, grasping vines whipping through the air.

The creature has reached out and grabbed one of the watch in a vine and is dragging his struggling body towards it's beak.

Knowledge (Nature) to identify the beast.

Party actions first, then the beast will kill it's first victim.

Hurrying out of her cabin, Ghilda casts Weapon of Awe on Brine's Sting upon realizing the horror on deck after hearing the commotion.

Round One

- Standard Action: Cast Weapon of Awe You transform a single weapon into an awe-inspiring instrument. The ringing of the bell rouses Marnir from his cabin and he races on deck. Seeing the huge maw and the sailor being dragged towards it he uses his magic to coat the grappled deckhand in a film of slippery grease, hoping that the man will be able to escape before he is eaten.

"What is that thing?!" he yells, looking around for an answer.

Move Action to arrive on deck, Standard Action to cast grease on the grappled sailor to give him a +10 circumstance bonus on Escape Artist checks and combat maneuver checks made to escape a grapple, and to his CMD to avoid being grappled.

GM, could we reach this thing's main body by climbing up a mast?

Kung is unsurprisingly unaware of what the beast is. He looks at it almost in wonder; a lifetime spent on ships, mostly fighting beasts on shore or in the water, has left him largely unprepared for a mysterious hanging plant beast.

He anxiously looks around for a way to get to the beast, looking either low-hanging vines from it, or the ships rigging itself. Kung is pretty much out of ranged attacks after our last beach battle; he is looking to bring the fight to the Mancatcher beast itself.

Are you sure you want to do that?

Climbing the mast and out onto the yardarm will get you close to the beast, however it has 10 reach and 4 tentacles.

Climbing is better than nothing then. Looks like we'll have to brave the AoO.

Will climbing the mast/yardarm get us close enough to make a melee attack, regardless of any AoO that we might have to brave to get there?

Markizio nodded, "Yeah, ready."

He turned to Ghilda and Lane, "Cover us with missile fire."

Markizio puts a hand on the captain's shoulder, "Wait, captain. Maybe we can even the odds a little."

He then pulled sand from his spellpouch, fine, very fine sand and he blew it towards the beast as he infused it with magic. The fine sand exploded in a cloud in front of the tentacled beast.

1st round:

Markizio blasts the beast with arcane missiles.

The beast discards the captured sailor, his desiccated body slamming onto the deck, shriveled from the loss of all his blood. It scuttles along the overhanging vines towards more food. The vines sagging lower under it's weight until it hangs 10 feet from the deck.

Victim: 1d3 ⇒ 3

A vine lashes out to attack Kung
Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26 Hitting.
Grab: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (11) + 23 = 34 VS Kung's CMD of 24.

The vine wraps around Kung tightening painfully and dragging him towards the beast. damage: 1d8 ⇒ 6
The pain gets worse as the beast begins draining Kung's blood through his skin. Kung you also lose 1 point of strength from the blood drain.

2nd round.

Markizio casts his spell on the beast.
Will save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11 Crapcakes!

The beast thrashes about in surprise as it is now blinded, and is outlined with glowing light.

Ghilda cast Prayer on the party. - You and each of your allies gain a +1 luck bonus on attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saves, and skill checks, while each of your foes takes a –1 penalty on such rolls.

The beast is now 10 feet over you, Kung is grappled and being lifted up towards the razor sharp beak snapping greedily in the beasts center.

Party actions can now go.

Sorry Marnir, your man was dead the moment he was grabbed.

Marnir growls in anger as the corpse of one of his sailors thumps to the deck. His growl loudens to a roar of rage as the beast lifts Kung from the deck and begins to crush the half-orc in it's tendrils.

Marnir moves towards the mainmast and begins to pull himself up the rigging towards the yard as a flashing cloud of sand explodes over the creature and it starts thrashing about. Marnir grabs hold of the yard and pulls himself up, axe ready to hack at the creature. "Hold fast Kung! We're coming!" he shouts.

It looks like a double move to get to the mast then climb up far enough to be able to attack the thing, so I'll just Climb at normal speed rather than take the -5 to increase my speed.

Climb, prayer: 1d20 + 11 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 11 + 1 = 14
