Working on Sparky, hoping to get him done tomorrow. Excuse me for asking a stupid question, but where in Golarion are we?
Not stupid at all. the Red Redoubt is actually about two miles north of the edge of Absalom on the Isle of Kortos. So you will have a handy metropolis nearby for all your loot-selling and gear-purchasing needs. Plus, there might also be Intrigues and Politics involved...

Also, have you considered the storm lord druid archetype? The extra domain and the electricity/sonic resistances could well come in handy, as well as being really well-suited to the trait you picked...
Sylvalia Tesseril |
I have made some further adjustments. I have swapped out the Absalom trait (which was nice but didn't feel like it fit) with Extremely Fashionable (to get Diplomacy as a class skill).
I'm also not sure at what stage we're to begin, so I haven't yet purchased the equipment for the expedition. If you want me to go ahead and buy things like rations, a bedroll, and other basic exploration equipment now, I will. Otherwise, I anticipate going shopping before we set out.

I'm here, and ready to choke some people out.
I don't think you can start with Snapping Turtle Clutch. You get Snapping Turtle Style for free and don't have to meet its prereqs, but you have to meet the prereqs for the rest of the martial arts feats you take, and STC has a BAB prereq of +3.
Macawi Farstrider |
I need to re-write Macawi's description. He's going to be a bit more simple in his interactions and a bit more native (and naive), I think, than originally planned. Hide armor, a totem spirit painted on his shield and fetishes hanging from the edges, fluff like that.
Mechanically, do I have the i's dotted and the t's crossed? I didn't know if you had looked yet or were waiting because you thought I was not done.
Oh, now that I say that, his ACP hasn't been figured into his skills. OK, other than that...?
Mala |
She needs a modifier for her Knowledge (psionics). It's a Knowledge skill like any other, and all her usual bonuses apply.Unless I'm doing my math wrong, it doesn't look like you've included her stat modifiers for being middle-aged.
I had just thought of the knowledge psionics today, but thanks for pointing that out.
I actually did include the middle aged modifications to her stats. At least I'm 99% sure I did. But I'll look those over again too.
EDIT: Yup. Her starting stats were
str - 11
dex - 17
con - 9
Int - 13
Wis - 11
cha - 13
Which should come to 20 points. A +2 to Cha and Con and a -2 to Str, and then a -1 to the physical stats and a +1 to the mental ones gives her the current scores.

why not? is says i get IUS and any single style feat as a bonus feat. if you look at the style feat section, one of the feats listed in that section is snapping turtle clutch. i read it as "style" feat in the same way that normal fighters get a bonus "combat" feat. not as "style" feat in the sense that it has to have the word "style" in it. am i wrong about that?

Snapping Turtle Clutch is classified as a Combat feat, so it would qualify for the fighter's bonus combat feat, but it is not classified as a style feat. It just meshes well with the style feat of similar name. At least, that's how it appears to me.
The feats with "Style" in the name are also classified as style feats.
My 2 cp, Shisumo's opinion is what decides it, of course.

Yeah, it really is a Rules As Written thing. The feats with Style in the name actually have the Style tag (Snapping Turtle Style is [Combat, Style], for instance, while Snapping Turtle Clutch is just [Combat].) You're supposed to be able to start the tree with the free feat, but you can't continue it without meeting the other requirements.

heh. That's funny. I had her at Str 10, Dex 16, Con 8, Int 14, Wis 12, Cha 14 before racial adjustments, which is also 20 pts but gets you to the final result without the age modifiers. Still, your way works as well, and if you're happy with the final result, I have no complaints. ;)

Oh ok. Gotcha. I was looking at the table, and they are all classified on the table as style feats. Shoulda checked the actual text. Instead of s.t. clutch as my bonus and style as my regular, I'll take s.t. style as my bonus and dodge as my regular. The net effect will be that I will have one higher AC, but won't get to do a "reactionary" grapple.
I'll change it when I get home. Also, as to shopping, I already put in all my adventuring gear and whatnot (although I probably should have included clothes), but if we are not shopping until right before we leave, we can assume I don't have all my gear, and I'll buy it when we shop. Doesn't matter to me either way.
mbauers |
Okay, so it looks like Garrick, Mala and Sylvalia are completely done, Macawi is almost done, Sparky is still coming together and mbauers is hopefully going to have his character done tonight. That seem right? I'd like to start the game thread tomorrow if we can make that happen...
Yep, I will definitely post my character before I go to bed tonight. Today I cut the grass for the first time at my new house :-), setup chairs, a table, and a bin, got a grill, etc, etc. In a couple minutes I'm about to be the grillmaster for the first time in my life, so that's pretty cool, hehe.
Asim Chigaru |
As promised, here I am. The only thing I didn't type out in the profile is the background, and that's because I wanted to see a little bit more about how this starts out. Basically he is a reformed criminal/thug who now follows Sarenrae. I think he probably would have been a gunmarshal in Alkenstar as part of his reformation process. I see him as really trying to do good now, but still being impatient/frustrated when people annoy him.
Not sure why he would go to Absalom, so that's about the last thing I have to work out with him. But everything else is done and ready to go.
Shisumo |
I got a rudimentary sketch of Sparky together. Don't want to stall anything, but am a bit pressed for time right now.
I don't plan to start by rolling initiative (though the idea does have a certain grim appeal [heehee]), so a rudimentary sketch is good enough, I think.
DM Shisumo |
There is indeed a bonus language available for most ethnicities. Reading Garrick's background, I'm not sure which ethnicity applies to him, but depending on which way you go, you might well pick something up. The two most common ones are Chelaxian and Taldane, however, and neither of those gets a bonus language (as their native language is in fact Common).
Macawi Farstrider |
Based on the background that's developing for Macawi, I'm claiming that Common is his second language, but his first (native) language is a pidgin of Giant and other regional languages from a remote part of the Mwangi Expanse, so the chances of someone else knowing the language are so small that I'm not claiming it. He hasn't used it for more than 25 years, himself.
Just in case anyone's looking at his background and thinking I'm trying to sneak a second language in that he's not eligible for since half-giants only get Common by default.

Isn't that known as Polyglot?

Polyglot wouldn't normally incorporate any elements of Giant, but I'm completely unconcerned about the idea of Macawi being a broken character because he can speak Polyglot as well.
Sylvalia Tesseril |
Why, yes, I do have a query, if it pleaseth thee, Shevala. What is the purpose of purging the Redoubt of dangers before testing the skills of thy recruits? Would that not negatively effect the reliability of the examination? How canst thou accurately judge the capabilities of the recruits with a sterilized testing environment? Also, thou sayest that outside contractors -- in short, we -- wouldst be reviewed for Society purposes. Would this not be a more effective way of ascertaining thy recruits' skills?
There is no hint of anything accusatory in Sylvalia's tone. Her questions are purely analytical.
She taps her fingers against her cheek, musing, Unless of course, we are the recruits thou hast considered for the testing, and this employment be merely a ruse to produce a more reliable result.
In any case, I accept the task, as I have long wished to see personally the inside of the Redoubt. Thy dissertations have been fascinating, Captain. But to actually venture beyond the walls of Absalom and enter a place of such mystery... She gets a far-off, hungry look.
Sylvalia Tesseril |
Shevala's eyebrow lifts, but her expression does not otherwise change. "We want controlled dangers, dangers the Society itself will arrange. What you are likely to find there is... not controlled. It is your task to give us the blank parchment on which to write our preferred challenges."
I see. In that case, how much time has elapsed since the Redoubt was last purged? Also, how did the most recent expedition fare? Did they eliminate all prepared dangers? If not, hast thou any record of what may have been left behind?
There is no sense of trepidation in the elf's voice, just scholarly interest.
Mala |
Mala is already bouncing in her seat before the Pathfinder is even finished talking. This sounds like just the thing to help her, and she knows that's why Shevala is asking her. She's such a good friend. Mala beams up at the woman with wide eyes. Taking one of the wayfinders she immediately starts to examine it, her fingers running over it carefully as her eyes squint down at it. She doesn't even seem to notice that Sylvalia is asking questions, her mind bent entirely on the shiny thing in her hands. I wonder how it works? Or if I could take it apart to find out? Or if I really should? Or what kind of crystal that is? Or how they made it? Or what they hope to find out? And just how are they going to get any information if they aren't there? Is it some kind of recording device? Is it going to track their movement? Is it going to explode? Could she make it explode if she had to? What else could she do with it?.... And well... you get the idea.
DM Shisumo |
The wayfinders work the way such things usually work - at-will light (CL 5th) and a magnetic compass that aids in navigation. Shevala explains the command word for each one as she passes them out.

"Seven months. The last group was thorough and effective, and what little they did not deal with was removed by my agents after the training was over. However, seven months is more than enough time for a new round of dangers to have accumulated; it seems at times as though the Redoubt attracts such things. What exactly you will find I do not know, however. I look forward to your report on the matter afterward."
Sylvalia Tesseril |
She nods politely. Very good. I shall not disappoint.
Turning to the others Sylvalia has not met yet, she bows in greeting. It appears we shall be working with each other at this task. I am pleased to make thy acquaintances. I am Sylvalia Tesseril. I am schooled in the arts of wizardry, conjuration and summoning, and have studied underneath Venture-Captain Shevala. Aya o alvaestel
Macawi Farstrider |
The tall black man smiles hugely and tries to mimic the wizard's bow.
"I am called Macawi. Happy to meet," then slowly and carefully, "Sil-vale-ya." He looks to see her reaction to see if he got the name right. "Macawi hunts, Macawi fights." With a firm nod, "Macawi protect friends."
He's not an idiot, but he's had no formal education and he's way out of his element standing in the venture-captain's office.
Macawi Farstrider |
Macawi's shopping has been completed. I discovered that he could afford the armor I originally intended to purchase for him, so his AC is a point higher than previously.
Am I correct in my reading of the Armor Expert trait when it says that his ACP is better by one for his armor, that does not impact the ACP for his shield?

So I don't put this off and forget to do it altogether, I need to let you know that we will be taking our annual fall trip to not-here. I'm not certain how much Internet access I will have, so I may be unusually quiet from Sept 10 through Sept 17. Please feel free to DMPC Macawi as necessary. (He's just going to be the strong, silent, protective fellow in the corner, anyway.)
