Amari Al'Fahd |

oh, not hitting on a 18 in a surprise situation. Damn Small creep!
Without thinking, Amari sends two more arrows against the small target before he can get behind cover again.
Flurry!: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Flurry 2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Last one should hit - please?: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Shadows of Sand GM |

Yeah Amari... Not everyone can be caught flat-footed... and there's partial cover from the little filing cabinets and desk. But the 25 hits even through the cover!
Amari's third shaft draws a yelp of pain and a small curse in some language you don't recognize.
Zed: -9
Sure!
The commander introduces Zaza to Emir, the man who lost his keys. "She is here to inspect and investigate. We of course will cooperate with all of her questions and orders." Emir bows respectfully in greeting. Before you stands a junior officer without a single hair out of place, his uniform perfectly arranged with wrinkle, not a speck of dust upon him, and his weapon clearly well cared-for.

Shadows of Sand GM |

Lo and Agaban still up in combat.
The officer blushes deeply but maintains his perfect posture. "Ma'am, I had the keys on my person early this morning but could not find them a few hours ago. Of course I filed a report immediately. I cannot think how I could have possibly lost them..."

![]() |

Signing quickly back to Amari before he enters the room.
<Catch or kill??
After getting the response he draws his weapon and readies his shield.
Once he hears the crash in the room he rushes around the corner and moves to box in the thief.
Will draw my light mace if we are attempting to catch or a dagger if we are looking for a more final solution. Also, my vote would be catch unless we all don't have the equipment to attempt non-lethal damage.

Shadows of Sand GM |

Stealth: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (4) + 22 = 26
Perceptions: 4d20 ⇒ (8, 8, 1, 7) = 24+9, +4, +8, +5
The dark figure ducks behind the desk. You don't hear or see anything else.
Party up. Note that I am employing hard corners rules regarding these boxes of important papers. This is actually helping you guys out a lot here.
The officer replies "I suppose the most likely moment would have been when I was inspecting the lock to the office, ma'am. I inspect it every morning for signs of tampering. Ironic. I remember having my keys before the inspection then I went to check guard rotations and it was during that inspection when I noticed my keys were missing..." He blushes deeply again at having committed such an error.

Amari Al'Fahd |

Amari leaves his high position and rushes through the room, to close the circle quickly.
On his way, he passes Agaban and whispers: "Small. Caster."
If he sees the small one after cornering the desk, he will get into kick distance.
Double time! Noted my path with small lines on the map.
It most likely is a caster.
And wants to get away...
Do we have something to uncover invisibility...?

Shadows of Sand GM |

Amari, I'll assume you're keeping your eyes open. Nice tracing!
Amari perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Amari doesn't notice the small figure anywhere behind the desk.

Shadows of Sand GM |

Serenity moves around the desk to attack the humanoid hidden under it.

Zatinya |

Shadows of Sand GM |

The officer nods. "Yes ma'am. I mean headquarters." He defers to the commander for the follow-up questions. "The gate is the only conventional way in and out of the fort. I suppose one could climb the wall or let oneself down over it. Of course, ma'am. A careful watch will be set." He confers with his officers about setting such a watch. The wall is 20 ft tall and made of stone but it's certainly not perfectly smooth.
Lo and Agaban still up.

![]() |

Just curious where Serenity is showing the little guy is located. Odds are I will move to the middle of the room and cast Bless, or channel energy in the middle of the room if he hurts the cat and to potentially revive the fallen guards. It depends slightly where the companion is attacking and if there isn't a good position for him to reach to continue to box in the opponent.

Lo'Laan Jin |

Claw: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Claw: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15

Damage: 1d2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Ready Action Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Lo'Laan awaits for the figure to show itself before attacking.

Shadows of Sand GM |

Alright, Agaban. Let's say you cast bless.
Even aided by Agaban, Serenity can't manage to land a blow. Frustrated at being found, the small assailant steps out from under the desk and strikes twice at Serenity.
Attacks: 2d20 ⇒ (11, 11) = 22
Dam: 2d4 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3
Though Serenity isn't surprised whatsoever, she is still struck hard on the jugular twice, leaving her dazed and nearly unconscious (13 non-lethal) as the small figure strikes her twice with small blunt weapons.
Party up!

Amari Al'Fahd |

Amari quickly steps around the chair and throws himself against the smaller opponent, trying to tackle him to the ground!
Grapple + Bless + Flank: 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 1 + 2 = 17
Ahhh, I don't think that will be enough for a lvl 4+ guy, even if he's small...

Shadows of Sand GM |

Amari can't quite get a hold of the small attacker as they duck under his grasping arms!
Lo and Agaban still up.

Lo'Laan Jin |

Bite: 1d20 + 9 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 9 + 4 + 1 = 32 Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 Trip: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30

Outflank AoO, Bite: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17
Lo'Laan moves to flank the small figure as they continue their coordinated assault.

![]() |

Seeing Serenity taking the blows from the thief, he moves forward to be in a position to keep the guy contained while grabbing the spiral hanging off his belt. He whispers a quick prayer for the cat while readying his mace if the thief attempts to escape near him.
Attack: 1d20 + 1 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 1 + 3 = 22
Damage (NL): 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Shadows of Sand GM |

Dang that crit! :)
Serenity trips the foe with her bite, allowing her to land follow up attacks with her claws. Lo'laan then moves into position and the tough half-orc brings his weapon down on the operative with a crash. The dark figure staggers for a moment then slumps to the floor, unconscious. You pull of the mask to reveal a young adult male goblin.
Combat over. Wow guys... that was really lucky. Serenity's scent ability really nerfed this rogue too, who had a +22 to stealth. His sneak attacks were going to leave at least one of you unconscious nearly every round... Ah well. 400 xp each to the three of you. What now?
A belt.
A small bag that somehow has 4 bear traps in it, a 10 ft pole, 4 waterskins, nice-looking thieves' tools, and 10 days rations.
A shiny metal shirt.
2 saps that look nice.
Keys to the office.
Some of this stuff can be appraised. The rest will require detect magic+spellcraft or something of the sort to ID.

Amari Al'Fahd |

Amari will search the man (?) really carefully (take-20 carefully [29]) and removes anything that even remotely looks like it might be a weapon, anything with a sharp edge, which might be magical, containing poison or looks suspicious before tying the little fellow up with lots of rope.
<Someone check the safe.
Agaban, can you wake one of the guards?
We could need a runner to the Commander and Zatinya.
They need to know what has happened here.>

Shadows of Sand GM |

Amari finds one small blade tied into the goblin's hair.

Amari Al'Fahd |

Grinning inwardly, Amari cuts the braid containing the blade and stows it in his small pack.
Shadow scouts and assassins are trained and equipped in similar manner as this goblin.
He ought to have something like that on his body, in the hope that it would go unnoticed and would allow him to escape imprisonment.

![]() |

Make sure you have him bound tight think it may just be easier to channel a little energy to try to heal both guards and Serenity but haven't figured out how to limit who it impacts.
Taking a step towards the center of the room, he chants a brief mantra before raising his holy symbol and blasting out a wave of energy.
Channel: 1d6 ⇒ 6
After waiting a second.
Well done everyone glad we were able to catch him but now the hard part of getting a hardened spy to talk...Amari wasn't this guy traveling with a companion and/or bird...do we think there is another in the fort or watching from above?

Shadows of Sand GM |

One of the guards gets up, bewildered at suddenly coming to consciousness. But he thanks you and goes to get the commander and Zaza when you ask. They soon arrive at the scene with a pair of other guards.

Zatinya |
"Well, well. Look what we found here! Did you only catch one? I'm glad we caught him in the act."
Zaza makes sure the gnome is not dying. After that, she takes out her smelling salts and waves it under the other unconscious guard to wake him up.
"The gnome is one of the Taldan spies we've been tracking," Zaza tells the commander and others around. "He is not alone, though, so we should be vigilant. There is a bird that has been traveling with them, so we should have the guards keep a lookout."
Still with the smelling salts in hand, she approaches the gnome (will disarm him if needed). "Should we wake him for interrogation?"

Shadows of Sand GM |

XD I know you guys concluded a long time ago that the small guy must have been the taldane gnome sorcerer but it was the rogue. That's why you have an unconscious goblin here on the floor, not a gnome.

Shadows of Sand GM |

The commander of the fort looks to you deferentially "Ma'am, you have more experience in these matters than I do, but I fear it will take some time to get answers from one such as this. And in that time, the other could escape. What can you tell me of this other?" He looks very concerned at the presence of not one but two Taldane spies in his fort all of a sudden! This was not what he expected on parade day.

![]() |

Hearing Zaza talking about a gnome, Agaban looks uncertainly around.
<Is there a gnome here???>
Not seeing anything forthcoming he turns back to Zaza.
Also, Zaza do you think you can detect any residual magic since we know they used a spell at the last fort but I didn't see anything being cast when we came through the door or during the fight.

Shadows of Sand GM |

Zaza can cast detect magic in here if she wants or walk around the fort keeping detect magic on. Is that what you want to do?

Shadows of Sand GM |

The bag and the belt detect as magical, as does the captain's armor and the lock on the safe.
Spcrft check to ID the items.

Shadows of Sand GM |

You don't know what the bag is besides that it seems to hold more than it should and has an aura of moderate conjuration. The belt grants its wearer increased dexterity (+2). The armor is +1 and all you know is that the lock has moderate abjuration on it.
The commander looks at all of you. "We didn't see anyone matching that description. What should we do now? I fear a general order that alerts the fort will only send a professional such as this running very far and very fast."
Appraise would be appropriate on the goblin's armor. I decided it was fairly obvious the saps and thieves' tools were masterwork.

![]() |

Appearing even more confused Agaban goes to the guard Zaza just woke and takes the time to look him over and will check the other guard if/when he returned with the commander.
Will take either 10 or 20 on heal check so 18 or 28. Depending how interesting the conversation goes.
Normal sized gnomes...is there another species that was common where Zaza is from that has them regular size...guess it doesnt matter.
Turning briefly to sign towards the group.
<Zaza did you get any more information on the recruit/soldier that returned early from leave/training...and is he in here when you casted Detect Magic...wondering if there could be an illusion on him to either scout or help our friend here enter the fort.>
Pausing after this he then seems to think a little harder.
<Zaza do you think we should separate you from here before we wake our friend so he isnt able to identify the whole group...doubt it would matter since we haven't located his accomplice but cant change that fact.>
Taking a moment after looking over the wounded. He then takes the armor and looks it over with something catching his eye.
Appraise: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Zatinya |
Hm, did I misunderstand what we were tracking? I thought there was a pair of medium sized tracks, small-sized tracks, and the bird.
Zaza checks if the goblin has Emir's keys, or if they are still missing.
She signals back to Agaban as he offers his plans. <Good idea. You folks interrogate the goblin. I will check if the soldier who came back early is really him.> Zaza hands her smelling salts to Agaban.
She then addresses the commander. "You make a good point about not alerting anyone. Perhaps we should go back to our drills while my colleagues perform their work here. I know you pointed them out earlier, but I want to check again on Alni Porrot, and talk to his Sergeant."
Zaza would like to detect magic on Alni for magics, and also just talk to someone who knows him well to see if Alni is acting strangely.

Shadows of Sand GM |

Yes those were the tracks you were following. Presumably, the goblin left the pair of small-sized tracks.
The guards look ok. They were knocked out with saps but it didn't do any lasting harm. They have serious leg aches, however, from getting sap-sneak-attacked in the femoral nerve. Who knew that would knock a person out?!
The armor looks nice but Agaban doesn't have a lot to say about it.
Zaza indeed finds Emir's keys on the goblin. The commander then heads to the wall with her to speak with Alni.
The rest of you can wake the goblin whenever you want with Zaza's smelling salts.
The commander heads to the wall with you where you see several guards keeping watch. He points out Alni and you cast detect magic. Immediately, you detect illusion magic on Alni but simultaneously, he silently transforms into a leopard and lashes out at the shocked guards around him.
You won init. Map just for you. You and Alni are acting in the surprise round (round 0). The guards will then act at the bottom of round 1 as they are really surprised that their friend is attacking them as a leopard. It's 15 ft up to the palisade on the wall. There are stepladders at fairly regular distances. One new guard will come every round at the sound. The headquarters building is 1000 feet away.
Zaza init: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Alni init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Guards init: 1d20 ⇒ 16

Zatinya |
"He's a Taldan spy, skewer him!" Actually, is it a he or she?
Zaza assumes an aura of leadership as she draws her whip, moves forward and tries to blind the leopard.
Standard action: Inspire Courage. Move into melee. Swift action to cast and discharge Dazzling Blade from her cestus. Blinded 1 round, Will DC15 to instead be dazzled for 1 round.

Shadows of Sand GM |

Will: 1d20 ⇒ 4
Attack Zaza: 1d20 ⇒ 18
Attack guards: 2d20 ⇒ (14, 19) = 33
Dam: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 5) = 13
Grab: 1d20 ⇒ 11
The leopard blinks its eyes rapidly and growls at Zaza, shaking her light from its eyes. It lashes out at her and the nearby guards with tooth and claw.

Shadows of Sand GM |

It kills one guard with a blow from its paw and leaves a second nearly dead. Its jaws latch onto Zaza (9 dam) and grab her. Fortunately for the flame dancer, meat isn't on the great cat's mind. He immediately releases her and dashes toward and up the ladder, nearly reaching the wall already. The soldier stabs wildly at the beast but loss of blood leaves him too off balance to land a blow on the fast cat.
AoOs for Zaza and the soldier. Zaza, roll yours.
The captain rallies his men while drawing a longbow. "You heard her. Get it!" He fires while two of his men move into longspear range and two others hurl javelins. Another guard comes running up from along the battlement, drawn by the commotion. Thanks to Zaza's leadership, four telling blows are landed. The creature snarls in pain as its hide is pierced repeatedly but it seems focused on climbing the ladder the rest of the way up onto the palisdade.
AoO: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 3 + 1 = 10
Spears+4: 2d20 ⇒ (11, 13) = 24
Javelins+2: 2d20 ⇒ (3, 14) = 17
Longbow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Dam: 2d8 + 3 + 1d6 + 2 + 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3, 1) + 3 + (4) + 2 + (3) + 4 = 20
Zaza, GO!

Zatinya |
It would be a longshot, but Zaza tries to trip the leopard as it bounds away, even as she has just been wounded.
Trip instead of AOO: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 6 + 1 = 20
If that doesn't work, as the leopard climbs up the ladder, Zaza will improvise--by attempting to knock the ladder over!
Bull Rush ladder with charge?: 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 2 + 1 = 11
"Keep shooting, and someone pull that ladder back!" she shouts, hoping someone else could make her plan work.

Shadows of Sand GM |

Zaza's ideas are good ones but they don't pan out. Her whip snakes around one leg but the leopard's three free legs were more than enough to pull away. The bard then throws herself into the ladder but can't bring it down. The leopard snarls back, almost with a grin, and leaps easily over the rampart onto the ground on the other side and hits the ground running, taking off across the sand but leaving no tracks. Some men run up onto the ramparts and begin drawing their bows. The commander rushes up behind them. But the leopard is gaining distance quickly and will soon be out of range.
You're up, Zaza.
