Well to throw another worry to us...would we have been able to determine the type (flying/grounded) bird that is leaving the scat...cause now I am worrying that there is a chance they know they are being followed due to "eyes in the sky" and that likelihood will increase as we get closer to them.

I think we might just take a break then, we're too far from making it.

It's up to you guys. It's not necessarily all or nothing in terms of whether or not you catch up. Might be a matter of when and what's happened in the meantime.

I am too in favor of stopping for today.
Having overmarched 3 hours will bring us 3/8 of a normal travel day closer to them and we were only about 2 days behind.
I sure would hate to run into them fatigued and with expanded resources o.O

The Shadows stop to make camp in the lee side of a dune, exhausted.

Any particular preparations for night? Should you get in a good night's sleep, you'll be all ready to go again in the morning.

With Lo'Laan keeping watch, Zaza is content to get a good night's rest. Before doing so, she will heal anyone who needs healing. I think Lo'Laan has to be at least at 5HP after Agaban's channel.

Hmm...just wondering/future reference with us bedding down for the day think Agaban would have used his other spells converting them to CLW for the group before resting for the night to have a full compliment for the next day...or is that too risky considering we can be attacked at night?

After passing the last pile of bird scat.

Looks at Amari attempting to determine how fresh it is Agaban seems to be hit with a small case of divine inspiration.

Amari can you tell the type of bird roughly that left this...cant remember if you said before but is it one that can fly...would hate to think they have it circling overhead and see us as we close on the group.

If you want I can roll CLW and use my last 2 1st level spells for the day but wanted to make sure before I use them that we aren't just taking the wand charges to heal?

Current Date: Gozran 25th Amari Maze Hadha Maze Zaza Maze

It's up to you guys on the CLW situation. Amari did recognize the scat as that of something like a hawk.

DC 28 retroactive survival:

The scat's age matches the footprints closely enough that Amari thinks the bird stayed with the Taldanes. Given the dunes, it could only see up to 2 miles back very clearly.

Waking refreshed Agaban takes a quick moment to cast Create Water in the waterskin before following a quick devotion to Pharasma.

Feeling like there he had a quick burst of insight from his prayer.

Amari at this point do we think they will deviate from the direction they are heading, and is there maybe a quicker way to close the gap at this point.

Looking around.

There isn't much in landmarks or cover and probably a riskier proposition but agree that it is better to reach them before they link up with the other 2 members

Just wondering with a new day do you think it would be worthwhile for me to use a spell slot for Deadeye's Lore. I would have +8 to survival while it is in effect and we could move at full speed while tracking for 2 hours.

I'll assume you move at full speed for a while now.

You follow the tracks rapidly until they lead you to Fort Ya-Aldin. Both are then obscured as they merge with a great amount of foot prints in front of the fort, apparently heading into it. Several guards keeping watch hail you as you approach.

"Hold! Who are you and what are you doing here?"

Turning to Amari.

Two clarifications: 1. Everyone should feel free to talk to NPCs. I won't punish a low charisma by requiring a roll unless you are trying to get the NPC to do something or allow you to do something. 2. This fort is essentially just a military installation with barracks and other essential facilities. Carry on.

Forgot to mention, I put back 2 charges on the Wand.

"We are tracking a group of Taldanes. Have you seen anyone come this way from our direction, about two days ago? Possibly a gnome and a druid, along with a bird. Perhaps something unusual happened at the fort recently. There was a break-in at Fort Hashbaz and longbows of a new design were stolen."

Current Date: Gozran 25th Amari Maze Hadha Maze Zaza Maze

The man looks quite alarmed. "How disastrous! No there has been no such unusual appearances here. I don't know why you would think there had been. But you are free to investigate my premises or logs as you wish!" He points you to some papers which include a duty roster that tracks the movement of his men, a detailed inventory of the fort, and his recent reports.

You can attempt checks on these if you wish. You can check one thing with no penalty but checking more than one splits your attention (-2 to the check for each additional resource of the three you wish to check). Linguistics, profession soldier, or K local would be appropriate.

DC 30 survival on the packed earth inside the fort!:

The small set of footprints sticks to the sides and shadows then splits off from the main traffic and slips behind a building. The medium set of footprints is not distinct enough to track.

Zaza continues her conversation with the commander. "Thank you. Who comes in and out of this fort regularly? It seems like there is quite a bit of traffic around these parts."

She then notices her partner's signs.
<I can distract the soldiers while you investigate.>

She starts looking at the duty roster.
K. Local: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

Then, regardless of whether she sees anything helpful, she asks. "Commander, would you be willing to have your soldiers do a drill? It would be extremely helpful if you pointed out the identities of some of these men on this roster."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26

Current Date: Gozran 25th Amari Maze Hadha Maze Zaza Maze

The commander answers Zaza's questions, clearly eager to help and impress whomever on Earth you work for. "The men stationed here enter and exit on drills, patrols, and troop movements quite often. There are also suppliers who visit occasionally." He nods at the suggestion. "Yes! Yes! A demonstration!" He begins calling men to attention at the gate, creating a massive diversion.

Anyone in particular you want him to point out? You don't necessarily need to provide a name but can ask for him to point out troublemakers, new recruits, whoever watched the gate 10 weeks ago, etc.

From the duty roster, Zaxa notices the following anomalies and points them out to the others:
1. There are two soldiers (Alnir Howat and Mochbed Delar) have never been placed on the same duty together in the past two months.

2. The number of men aiding in food preparation has drastically increased in the past week.

3. Yesterday, an officer of the guard was reprimanded for losing his keys to the headquarters building.

4. A certain Alni Porrot is listed as on guard duty but is also listed as having left on a three day training mission yesterday.

Amari is pleased that Zatinya got his idea from the few signs he made.
Once the commander calls his men to the drill, Amari will stay back and carefully analyse the tracks.
Finally finding clues on the small footprints, he follows them carefully to a building.
Anything special with this building?
Armoury? Headquarters? Kitchen? ..?

He does not press further though but quickly returns to the other Shadows to inform them of his findings.

Zatinya follows up on all the leads, though she spaces out the questions between his demonstrations as to not overwhelm the commander.

"Is Alni Porrot here? Why is he listed on guard duty and also away on a training mission?"

"Who is the officer who lost his keys? Should we change the locks?"

"Is there a reason why so many men have been needed to make food?"

"Do Alnir Howat and Mochbed Delar not get along? They're never on guard duty together."

You determine the tracks headed north between a building and the inside of the fort's wall. Looking at them in very close detail, you realize that the small humanoid who made these tracks was faster than most, as fast as a human. You also determine these tracks were made some time yestersay.

The commander answers Zaza's inquiries ad they arise.

"That is odd. He shouldn't be back from training yet. Apparently an officer found him unoccupied and sent him to guard duty on the south wall."

"Ah yes. Emir. He is normally very responsible. But I do not think we need to change the locks. There are very few thieves out here."

"Yes they are preparing rations for a troop movements."

"Yes for the last month they have been on very bad terms. I do not know why."

While Zaza looks over the roster and Amari follows some trail it appears in the dirt. Agaban seems to have an idea though little unsure how to poise the question.

At the other fort they found a way to go after blueprints for a new type of bow...wonder is there anything located at this fort that would be an obvious target beyond troop numbers/readiness/movements.

After Zaza points the anomalies and starts to question the commander during the drill. He reaches again for the logs and starts to look over them to see if there was anything missed and is willing to take the time to really do a detailed search.

Taking 20 on Linguistics for a total of 25.

When Amari returns Agaban turns his back on the formation and signs quickly in front of his robes.

<Wonder if the commander knows of any high reward targets for them to steal/destroy to impact the readiness of this fort and border? Do you think we can possibly pass this drill off as a snap inspection/audit from central command?>

Amari return in time to hear about the safe.
Hastily he signs to his fellows.
<I have found a trail to their small member.
He is quite fast and loose in the fort no longer than a day.
I would guess they are trying to get to that safe.
Maybe we can set up a trap for them there.
Or ... They are acting NOW.
The drill may have opened the way for them just nice.
We should check it out.

"Hm, doesn't the fact that Emir is responsible make you more suspicious? Only a single thief is needed to cause problems. Which one of these men is Emir? Also, which one is Alni, and who would know him best?"

Given the chance to sign, she will mention to the others.

<We should make sure nobody has assumed Alni's identity. And hear from Emir about how he lost his keys.>

Current Date: Gozran 25th Amari Maze Hadha Maze Zaza Maze

The commander points out Emir leading his platoon through part of the drill. "Perhaps. But even responsible men get lazy or sloppy at times. As for Alni, he is still keeping guard on the south wall according to the log. He is in... that sergeant's unit." He points out a short, broad-shouldered man who is leading part of the drill.

Will have a map of the fort up in a few hours since that might come in handy.
