Hey Kirth, I dropped a question about the whip in the Kirthfinder Houserules thread. Aside from an answer there that may change Jym's weapon selection, I think he's ready to go.

Feedback would be appreciated.

Sent you the copy that I was sent, Derek.

Sorry -- I'll look into it when I get home, wife and baby permitting -- I evidently also need to email rules to Derek, and so on!

No sweat. Whenever you can.

My wife is out of town for a few days. I'm watching the 6 month old and the 3 year old by myself! I pick them up, go home, fix the 3yo's dinner, give the 6mo a bottle, play with them for a bit, and then try to put the 6mo to bed quickly so that the 3yo isn't by himself for too long. When that doesn't happen, I hold the 6mo to sleep in my arms while I play with the 3yo and then put him to bed. The 6mo is asleep by that point. Then, I prep bottles for overnight and the next day, fix lunches, wash dishes, and finally collapse into bed.

I go to work to have some free time!

I've already done that. I'm amazing!

Whip as a martial weapon should not have the -4 nonprof penalty.

Then I think Jym is done. Feedback is appreciated, including any suggestions for improving the format.

Jym looks good! A few minor nitpicks:

Intuition save = +2 class, -1 Wis = +1 total.
Sling = +0 BAB -1 Wis +1 halfling = +1 (1d4-2/x3).
With magic stone: +2 (1d6-1/x3)

Formatting:

To make things easier for myself during play, I always like to include the Concentration checks for casting defensively, spell DCs, and pretty much everything else right in with the spells list:

1st (3/day, check +8)--hypnotism* (DC 14, 2d4+1 HD max)
0 (at will; check +10)--dancing lights, message, ...

Check = +8 (Concentration) +2 (focus instead of materials) - (2 x spell level).

  • You don't need to waste a spell slot on read magic anymore; it's covered under your Knowledge (Linguistics) skill.
  • To keep hypnotism viable past low levels, we've houseruled that the total HD of target are 2d4 +1 per rank in Concentration you possess, rather than a flat 2d4. I totally spaced out on updating that in the document, however. Bad Kirth! Bad!

I very much appreciate how you've laid out your skills, BTW, so that the total bonus is obvious and the number of ranks, etc. are shown.

When DMing, I always make a note to myself what the LW/HW thresholds are -- not that dividing by 2 is all that complicated, but in the middle of play when I'm looking at 2 other things, it's nice to have it right in front of me: e.g., hp 10 (LW 5/HW 2)

  • M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

So, Tombrose and Jym are pretty well done! Uro and Rose Twilight are coming along nicely -- the core concepts are in place, but just need tobe fleshed out in some particulars. Derek, how are your thoughts coming along?

    Grand Lodge

I need to really dig into the feat and spell options, and then grab the couple pieces of equipment she'll start with. (Scythe and armor mostly.) I'm working on a background out of the Champion district as well.

Oops. That line was originally for handaxes or some thrown weapon. I forgot to change the attribute for the attack roll when I went with sling.

Also, 0 -1 +1 = 0, but if you factor in +1 for being small size, it does end up being +1.

Anyway, I added a line for throwing the Magic Stone, since aside from a shorter range, that's going to be more effective.

All of your suggestions have been incorporated. Thanks!

How do you guys feel about getting started around Thanksgiving? (I can't stand American football, so this will give me something better to do!)

    I'm good to start whenever!

    Mutated Animal Turtle Smasher 10

Sure, that would work for me. Although, I will be tied up with family on Thanksgiving itself, I'm sure I could sneak a post or two in..

    M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

    Derek, you still out there?

    Liberty's Edge

Yep. Just starting my guy now. Going with the elite array instead of my rolls, and thinking fighter. Human probably.

    Grand Lodge

    He/Him Human

I'll see if I have time this weekend to finish up my character. Thanksgiving should be a good time for me provided I deal with my coursework like I need to.

    M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

    Cool!

    Liberty's Edge

    Male Human Commoner 2

Well, working in retail makes Thanksgiving time... interesting ..... for me, but I should be able to post before or after work each day.

    Grand Lodge

    He/Him Human

Just realized the PDF I was using is from last year. Are the up to date rules the individual files you sent in May?

TOZ, I just sent you a copy of the PDF that Jam sent me at your eponymous yahoo address.

    M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

OK, for those planning to participate, by Monday please have at least a working character! Backstory beyond a couple of words (district, profession, family if important) is optional. (Tombrose and Jym are (and have been) ready!)

If this isn't do-able, please let me know and we'll collectively decide how long to postpone.

    Liberty's Edge

I've had a rough week, I might have to bow out, my character is only half made.

    Grand Lodge

    He/Him Human

I'll see what I can do. School has been stomping my face.

    Mutated Animal Turtle Smasher 10

Yeah, sorry for the delay on my part. I was out sick from work most of last week and had a lot of catching up to do. I should be able to get things going soon though.

    M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

No worries -- if my home computer hasn't started functioning by then, I might have to delay as well.

    Did somebody say hero points?!

(Yes. It was me. I said it just now.)

    M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Yes, you start with one each.
Oh, you mean extra ones. Meh. Someone once told me "you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar," but honey on fish and chips is disgusting.

Because it's lunchtime, your un-appetizing food metaphor has distracted me from pursuing extra hero points.

    You win this time, Gersen.

Is it okay to read the Sasserine guide in Dungeon 139 or is it spoilery?

Jam, isn't that the same as this one that you linked in the Recruitment thread?

Nah, it seems a lot more detailed. Not sure if it's too detailed though. The one that I linked does reference it though, on the first page.

"Further details on Sasserine are provided for the
DM in Dungeon #139, which also kicks off the new
Savage Tide Adventure Path. This campaign assumes
your starting character is a Sasserine native, and as
such you can expect to know a fair amount in advance
about the city. This booklet presents everything you’ll
need to know about your new home town, from an
exhaustive list of every major shop and tavern to the
names of famous locals and the rumors currently
circulating in the streets and taprooms."

    M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

It won't hurt to read any of the guides, as long as you stay away from the actual adventure text. Keep in mind that Sasserine won't necessarily be good for much more than background and 1-2 adventures, the way the AP is written.

Okay, cool! I'm just a little stumped on writing a background. I know pretty much nothing about Greyhawk, so I figured if I read a little more about Sasserine, I might get a better idea how an orc would fit in. Any suggestions from the referee on that btw?

Also, another couple of questions before I finalize some character stats: Is there anything in the rules that would allow a paladin to substitute wisdom as the primary stat instead of charisma? Maybe a feat or something?

Also, what are your thoughts on multiclassing between barbarian and druid? I thought it would be a cool character idea and would be fun, but I know you said that this campaign is pretty though and my optimization skills are nil, lol.

    Jam412 wrote:

I had a long-running 3.5 barb/druid. He was amazing at first because my DM let me use Shillelagh on a great club, but other than that, the two classes don't synergize very well in 3.5. I bet they'd do a better job together in Kirthfinder, though.

Actually, the character is still around, but we've converted to Castles and Crusades. Now, he's a Druid/half-class Barbarian

Yeah, I've been looking around for options that help synergize the two classes but work and my attention span have other plans for me. :-P

Maybe you come in from the jungle to hang around the Champions District, where they have a bunch of arena stuff that is always fun, and might allow you to pick up spare cash. If you have ranks in Handle Animal, I'm sure they're always anxious to acquire leopards or something for people to fight with, and said animals would need to be cared for in the meantime. Or maybe you just live there, but I figured we could tie in your favored terrain this way.

    Jam412 wrote:

The Serenity feat does exactly that.

It can work, especially if someone else picks up the heavy lifting when it comes to battlefield control spells, but it requires careful choices. If you want to focus on just becoming a bear and mauling people, it's easier to take the beast shape rage powers; if you focus on casting, your Cha probably isn't high enough to jack up your save DCs (barring the Serenity feat, as mentioned above), and it's hard to keep your Wis and physical stats high enough to cover all your bases.

    Andostre wrote:

In KF, you can pick up the Oakheart druid initiation, which gives you constant shillelagh and a whole collection of other perks on your club or staff, in exchange for wild shape. So if you want to be a druid/barbarian who beats the hell out of people with sticks, that's ready-made for you. Grab the spirit totem to keep up your casting, and you're good to go.

    M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Uro's looking pretty good, stats-wise. The only discrepancies are super minor:

  • His Int while raging is only 9, but that won't affect play so it doesn't really matter.
  • You have an extra +2 to your Intuition save from somewhere, but I'm not seeing where.

To make your life easier, you could list your raging saves in the rage section. For now they're all just +1, but when you start getting into odd attribute bonuses, it would be easier to have them precalculated.

  • Liberty's Edge

    Male Human Commoner 2

I should be able to get my character completed and everything tomorrow, having only a half day of work.

Male Halfling HP -3/6 AC 18 Init +3 Percep +0 Sorcerer (Deep One Bloodline)

I think Tombrose is done now, let me know if I'm missing anything or if I've got something wrong

    M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Tombrose: The following stand out at first glance (please let me know if I'm missing a feat, trait, or something else that covers the existing numbers):

  • Intuition save is +0 (level) +0 (class) +0 (Wis) = +0 total.
  • CMD = 10 +0 (BAB) -1 (size) -1 (Str) +3 (Dex) = 11 total.
  • 1st level spells Known = 0 +1 (bloodline) +1 (Expanded Arcana) = 2 total.

  • HP 59/59 AC 17 Per:10 Rage 0/12 AC: 20 DR: 4

  • Thanks Kirth, should be all fixed up. Sorry it took a while, I had some problems with the site not saving my changes and losing my posts and I got super irritated and rage quit, ha ha. I'm going to work on Uro's background today.

    LOL!!!

    M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Uro's AC while raging gets +1 for the Dex boost and another +1 for the Wis boost, for AC 15, touch 13, flat-footed 13 (+2 Dex, +1 insight, +2 armor).
Raging CMD is 18 (+1 for increased Str, +1 for increased Dex).

    M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

    Any progress on Twilight Rose?

    Shadow Lodge

    He/Him

I have been shirking my duties in favor of doing nothing. (Well, catching up on Netflix is something I guess.)

    M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Heh. Still have an old Jim Kelly movie to watch, myself.
Still, I'd like to get started pretty soon, if possible!

    HP 59/59 AC 17 Per:10 Rage 0/12 AC: 20 DR: 4

Is it okay to be a part of the Church of the Whirling Fury?

    M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

I have no problem with it.

    Excited to start!
