If it's where Thistle is then getting from there to where the weapons are, whileavoiding the draconians, looks to be about 22 squares of movement. Which is aprox 2 rounds of double moves or one if running x4. Does it sound plausible to run (i.e. move x4) over there?
Caitlyn Weissman |
OK that sounds awesome Tania. Now the question is does that happen before or after the surprise round? Actually that might be a little moot since she doesn't get iteratives yet.
With a feral cry, she snatched up her weapon and ran straight at the entrance thrusting powerfully forwards with her weapon. Maybe it would hit the lock, or maybe Thistle had already opened it. Either way the shock of impact against the cage or lizardman face would hurt terribly but she was beyond caring.

The weapons will arrive on Tania's initiative this round. So Caitlyn will have hers to declare with.

Sorry, though I'd answered these. The door is facing away from the bronze guy and the cage provides cover to those within. Either way, running to get to the arms is fine.
Resolution coming in the morning.

Sorry for the lengthy delay. Been a weird week and I lost track of the fact that I had all the actions.

The Big Rescue, Round 1
Jakun flew into the wicker dragon and began to fiddle with the pulleys. The dragon's wings moved as he did. The minotaur spoke into the horn almost unintentionally, "YOU'LL FLEE IF YOU KNOW WHAT IS GOOD FOR YOU!"
All reptilian eyes flew to the dragon, entirely missing Thistletorp's advance to the cage. Likewise undeterred, Mariel pushed closer to the fray.
"Heads up, Caity, I think this is our exit," Gavin said, looking about for the chance to act.
Caitlyn nodded in agreement, "Aye about time. I think I saw your hammer to the east, second hut."
Still invisible, Tania outright ran across the plaza with a passel of Gavin's and Caitlyn's weapons, pushing them through the cage's bars. Doing a double-take, Caitlyn seized her hammer and went to work. The door, unlocked by Thistletorp, flew open before her and she struck the patina-brass lizardman with the full might of her rage. The business end of her hammer planted itself firmly in the lizardman's face.
The dumbfounded reptilians, barely distracted by Caitlyn's attack, turned and fled into the swamp.
You can chase them if you want, but they're not stopping for a while. :)

Tania, remembering the nasty ambush they were just in, carefully aims a parting shot at one of the casting dracoids, hoping to send it to the underworld. Pausing long enough to catch the rhythm of the dracoids' stride and spot an area where its scale seem softer, just at the base of the skull, Tania lets her arrow fly as she suddenly reappears.

Might work as the dracoid is flat-footed...
Caitlyn Weissman |
Arms folded with a deep scowl on her otherwise pretty face, Caitlyn watches the lizard men flee. "Was that Jackun up there?", she asked Gavin, pointing to the fake dragon.
Not waiting for his answer she softly tells Tania, "I don't fancy going on a merry dance through swamp running after that lot. Instead I think we should search the camp in case they left anything interesting behind. Oh and thanks for getting our weapons back, that was quite the trick you picked up there."
She starts searching the camp for any clues or tracks (other than the obvious ones).

Tania and Gavin both swiftly dispatch fleeing lizardmen while Caitlyn begins to search the huts and lean-tos. She finds little beyond scattered weapons and camping supplies, and rather few of the latter. In looking about, she sees an extension of the island to the north, with a bridge on one flank heading east and a huge, fallen obelisk stretching over water to the northwest.
Thistletorp Babblebrook |
Hiya, guys!. Thistletorp waves at Caitlyn and Gavin. Im glad to see you're not dead! We should explore this island more, it's pretty big and we really should find out what the lizard-guys are trying to do. We should also..oooo shiny!. Thistletorp says all of this in a single stream of words as he wanders into and out of the huts, following e
Jakun Stormhoof |
Jakun rises out of the Dragon and flies down to meet the others.
"Well done, you got them all to flee!"
When they mention what he did Jakun looks sheepish, "I should like to take credit for having done that intentionally but it was my bad habit of talking to myself out loud that assisted us there.
Should we push forward to the ruins?"
Jakun considers the fleeing creatures, "Those were the strangest Lizard men have any of you ever encountered their ilk before having lived in this area your entire lives?"
Caitlyn Weissman |
Caitlyn shrugs, "I've never heard of lizardmen before, let alone those. I did notice there appears to be some sort of hierarchy. The bronze looking one seemed to be in charge and spoke broken Abanasian. The others all spoke some rough guttural tongue. We've only seen a handful of them, I wonder if there are more types?"
Caitlyn notices Mariel looking at the obelisk and wanders over saying, "Now that's passing strange. What's it doing here?"
I think the ruins are the next logical place to go, assuming there's nothing of note at the obelisk.
Tania Teg |
"Well, there is this village were in, and where a tribe was able to capture most of us. Old stones won't go anywhere, but the lizards may... I'd also like to know how is it that Jakun was able to put the fear into them so effectively. Jakun, did you use some powerful incantation on them?" asks Tania as she inspects the remain of the casting dracoid she's brought down, satisfied at her arrow's placement.
Search the body.
Jakun Stormhoof |
"No, just some horn in the control area at the top of the wooden contraption. I suppose they are a simple superstitious folk who never saw the thing move and speak before! Dragons, ha! I wonder who built it, placed it here, and for what purpose?"
Thistletorp Babblebrook |
I could climb up? I should climb up! I'm going to investigate the dragon. There could be a real dragon in there!
Thistletorp heads towards the giant contraption.

A moment after they fall dead, both Tania's and Caitlyn's victims flash to stone, their flesh instantly transformed. Caitlyn's reflexes alone kept her blade from being trapped within.
Investigating the Obelisk
Mariel and Caitlyn found the obelisk laying beside a broken pedestal. Unfamiliar, spidery script covered its face. It must have stood a remarkably height in better days, but now only stretched across a broad pool of swamp water, easily wide enough to walk across.
The inscription reads:
Cov poj nroog ntawm Xak Tsaroth
Uas nws zoo nkauj puag ncig koj
Hais lus rau qhov zoo ntawm nws cov neeg
Thiab lawv lub siab dawb siab deeds.

The Great City of Xak Tsaroth
Whose Beauty surrounds you
Speaks to the good of its people
And their generous deeds.

Further investigations
Save for the obelisk and bridge, the island holds nothing of note save that found about the square.
The Wicker Dragon
Thistletorp had no trouble at all clambering up the dragon and getting inside, where he found a tremendous mass of ropes and pulleys, as well as a large horn, all within the dragon's throat.
I think I got everything...
Thistletorp Babblebrook |
Thistletorp giggles as he pulls on the ropes in the dragon, amusing himself by making the dragon seem to come alive.
Then, he slides down and runs over to the stone lizardmen. WoooOOOOOoooow! That's amazing. He picks up a stick and pokes it at the stone lizard people. Poke. Poke poke. Poke poke poke.
Caitlyn Weissman |
Caitlyn bends down to examine the obilisk, which is covered in faded runes, "Funny writing. Can you read it Mariel? Pretty sure Jackun would be interested."
She looks around for the minotaur and spots him, seeing him in the distance she shouts, "Oi Jackun! Come over 'ere! There's something you'll want to see."
Jakun Stormhoof |
The Minotaur heads to the Obelisk and peers at the language, "I fear languages are not my strong suit but I will take a look".
Linguistics 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Jakun shakes his head, "Sorry I can't make heads or tails of it".
Mariel Uth Kaldar |
She will relay this to her companions.
The language is one that I am not too familiar with but I am able to make out the words, beauty, gods and deeds and also the name of the city. We are indeed near the city of Xak Tsaroth.
Caitlyn Weissman |
Caitlyn smiles briefly before saying soberly, "It looks very old Gavin, for all we know these runes are directions to the local bordello or alehouse." She looks around and points out, "But now there's nothing left but ruins. I think Jackun has the right idea, we should explore them. We'll need to be careful, a place like this will be home to something..."

Perhaps even draconians who worship Kissyfur. :) So, if you want to keep dry you can use the obelisk as a bridge and head northwest or take the bridge and go about due east. If you're up for a swim, you can go in any direction. The kender works as a flotation device.
Samnell |
Can we make sure the obelisk is safe?
It looks pretty safe upon close examination. Big, sturdy hunk of thick rock, decently wide, and no apparent tripwires or other mischief. The bridge, though not solid stone, appears similarly without peril.

Crossing the bridge, where the companions find neither fleeing lizardmen nor desperate villagers, they find themselves on a small island with two more such bridges. The first heads to the southeast, the second northeast.
The SE bridge is a loopback. You can assume you checked it out and determined as much. No sense spending a round of posts on it.
Taking the northeasterly bridge, the companions find themselves at the jungle's abrupt end. A thousand food cliff terminates the island at a rocky promontory. To either side, rivulets of swamp water crash noisily down to the New Sea below. The waters shine in the moonlight.
You can RP here if you like; there's nothing going on but the view. When you're all set, the path left is the obelisk:
Backtracking, the Innfellows make their way across the fallen obelisk. It proves just as safe and sturdy as they thought. As they cross it, the noises of the swamp die away. They come off into a small stand of trees that soon gives way to a broad, cobblestone street running south to north. A roadway branches to the west, where the fluted columns and relief carvings of ruined buildings list wearily. A cobbled courtyard lays to the east admit crumbling structures. Beyond it stand four tall, free-standing columns. Before them, a huge well plunges into the earth. Vapors rise from within. Just north of the well, a single building remains whole despite the clear weight of time bearing upon its outer walls.

Tania mentions her appreciation with a soft whistling: "Ok, so we've reached our destination. Now what? I thought we would find help here, no?" she asks.
"The Forestmaster said only to be here," Goldmoon said, frowning. "I thought, perhaps, something would await us." She held the Blue Crystal Staff thoughtfully.
Caitlyn Weissman |
With a mischievous look in her eyes, Caitlyn drawls, "As great as the amazing view was over the promontory was, I can't believe that's what we where sent here to do... No as Mariel says, the only thing still standing is that building, that's where we need to be."
She claps Mariel on the back, which probably hurt although that wasn't intended, and starts walking.

The Innfellows made their way across the square, near to the huge well. Foul air rose from it, making its stench known well before one drew near. Thistletorp passed and Tania was just drawing near when a rush of cold wind burst from the well, followed an instant later by the long, lean figure dragon with scales almost invisible against the night sky darted into the open air, unfurling its wings and wheeling to face the companions. Long neck bent heavenward and jaws large enough to swallow a kender whole opened to release a mighty roar. For the first time in thirteen centuries, the air rang with the call of a dragon.

Round One
The onyx dragon fixes its baleful gaze on the party, eyes fell green pinpricks against the night, and the stars went out. Torches followed, leaving the Innfellows lost in absolute darkness.
"This cannot be what we are here for," Goldmoon said. "I will not believe it!" A pale blue light kindled in the dark, just enough to see her staff by. Above, the dragon's great wings still beat the air.
You're in the area of a darkness spell, but it's the party's turn now.
Jakun Stormhoof |
Jakun is stunned by the appearance of the creature of Legend. "We must take cover and let this thing come to us, we cannot beat it in the open".
Jakun will grab whoever is closest to him, likely Goldmoon, and run to the closest cover he remembers seeing before the darkness covered the group.
