I'm not sure if I've said this explicitly yet or not. But, I run condensed Space Combat, because otherwise it takes two to three weeks when running PbP. So, below is how I run space combat. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I'm happy to make alterations if it will improve the experience.
I'll ask for the scan roll as the group enters the ship. Then, I’ll roll the initiative at the start for all ships based on the respective piloting checks.
Then, once it reaches your ship’s turn, everyone will post* but I will resolve the actions in the Engineering – Helm – Gunnery phase order. As such, while you can declare your actions in the open, please have your dice rolls in spoilers.
*There are two exceptions to this.
(1) Gunnery phase might need to wait for all the ship movement to finalize to determine which weapons are available for firing. So Gunners might want to hold your posting until then or set up a series of contingency actions depending on the final facing and positioning. (2) If the Captain wishes to buff the pilot’s initiative roll, please indicate this and roll for this in the previous round, or state if that’s your default for start of combat (in which case I’ll roll that as well.)

Argon-42 will take a laser pistol.
Guys: even if you don't want the guns, if you have something that uses batteries you should use their batteries first. Always try to use up the consumable materials an SFS adventure throws your way.
Just a FYI to anyone who may not be aware: With regards to batteries, we can recharge them to full for free in the Lorespire Complex or on SFS ships.
Click for ruling description: Free battery recharging

Good to know!

Well... I guess this goes to show that I always need to double check people's sheets.
Hedd, where is your character sheet? Please put your character sheet in your profile. If you have any questions on how to do this, please ask.
Edit: GM HMM's PbP Character Template is a wonderful resource and makes converting physical sheets to Profile ones quite easy.

Should be added, with our current ship my Piloting is +9.

Argon, good catch! I'll correct that error in the future.
Alright, our 24 hour post limit is running out in a half hour. Normally I would bot those who are missing, but botting the pilot and both gunners sounds... less than ideal.
For today, I'll give those three players an extra day's grace. After this round, I'll be stricter with the 24 hour botting policy.
Finally, the ship gives two +1 modifiers per round. Where do you want to assign them? (This can change every round, but usually people don't switch them.) Argon suggested using one on the Pilot rolls, which many people do.

I'm guessing Hedd the pilot is currently waiting for the opposing ship to move first since Hedd won initiative with a +9 piloting? A 5 was rolled plus 9 is 14 (and possibly 15 with a +1 computer modifier?). The enemy ship rolled a 13.
And maybe the gunners are waiting for the movement to be resolved before posting?
As for the +1 modifiers, I'd suggest one goes to the pilot and the other to the turret gunner.

I was indeed waiting to find out where we end up, because with short range laser cannons that can’t fire to the rear, from where we are right now I can’t do anything at all. I can make a conditional post, but it’d be nice to at least know how many range increments away we are.
I agree with defaulting to modifying piloting and the turret weapon.

GM Ewok, just double-checking. You still want all rolls hidden in spoilers, right?

Just an FYI guys:
Holiday Plans:
This Friday (i.e. tomorrow), Saturday, Sunday, and Monday I have Christmas events to attend (and I may be busy Tuesday too). I will be travelling for some of that period. I still expect to have internet access and I'll try to get online in that period but my posting frequency may suffer. Wednesday night I will be back home and things will return to normal for me.

The spoilers are most important for the gunners. But if the captain hasn't posted yet, it is nice to post in spoilers!
But not the end of the world either way!
Thanks for letting us know, Argon! I'm going to post on the morning of the 24th, and the morning of the 26th. We'll see how far we get this weekend! If anybody else can't post, perhaps we'll just take the weekend off.

![]() |

I’ll also be traveling this weekend. I’ll have internet access but may be a bit slower to post over the next few days.
Happy holidays to all who are celebrating!

![]() |

I'll probably not be able to post over the long weekends (which includes the coming Tuesday).
Botting Domaya is really easy though. She's going to be encouraging the intiative check everytime attempting to hit Diplomacy DC 15 with a roll of 1d20+10+1d6. Please go ahead and do so.

The lack of non-skeletal crew is quite... convenient. The scenario offers no explanation. But, from what I've read, skeletons are little more than unintelligent lackeys. Meaning there had to be at least one more ghoul on board the ship, right? That or there are some smart skeletons out there.
I choose to think that the ghoul captain escaped to fight another day.

Did the party find anything of use while Argon was downloading files from the computer? I know Cora rolled a 21 perception when searching the bridge, and Arratoi expressed interest too.
I set the destruct to half an hour to give us time to do things if we wanted.

Doesn't Starfinder armor provide environmental protection for a number of days equal to item level? Wouldn't that be enough?
You're absolutely correct. If the atmosphere was poisonous, you could laugh it off and move on. However, the crystals are poisonous. If they found their way inside your suit somehow...

It occurred to me slightly too late that I should have made a Profession (cook) roll to see if the skreebara was edible/tasty. I guess I’ll assume it would’ve been a no. ;)

![]() |

Cora, it would have tasted like sand. And, if Anakin taught me anything, nobody likes sand!
Also, you are correct. Everything resets between quests, because they don't assume that you do them all in the same session. However, this quest pack does a great job of switching locations so that you would always get a night's rest between fights, anyway.

However, the far more important question, as pointed out by Argon, is how well does it enhance the flavor of tequila when placed in the bottom of the bottle???

![]() |

That would be a really big bottle!
In other news... we also have a mk 1 trionode computer now, so I propose we should decide again on a default set of roles to apply the bonus to.
Piloting and the two gunners? Piloting, main gunner, and captain? Would either science or engineering benefit more from a bonus?

![]() |

Pilot and two gunners sounds good. Argon has science covered and if we can keep winning initiative and staying on the pirate's weak sides then we might not need Engineering too much! Plus the DCs on Science and Engineering checks went done quite a bit since the Errata anyway.

![]() |

Argon- are you talking about the missile that was already fired? That hit an asteroid through STORY POWER!!! already.
For future missiles, you can't shoot them down. One thing you can do is stay out of their range and then outrun them.
Domaya- You are correct. The captain can act at anytime, including before initiative. For PbP, if you want to alter initiative, mention it the previous turn, please. So if you want to help initiative next turn, post it now.

![]() |

It's my understanding that you can't encourage the initiative check as the encourage action specifically says crew action and initiative checks, while piloting checks, are not crew actions, demanding and taunting are, however, written a bit more ambiguously, that being said I will move the ship in an hour or so currently mobile and can't get the maps to work right for it.
