"That Android has good kinetic plating. Perhaps I can find a laser around here somewhere... " Kalkan heads through the junk yard, looking for laser parts. Tesla coil, check. Copper wiring, check. Super cool spoiler? Maybe next time.
Since everyone is scouted, is there any point to a second roll?

Round 3
Having previously been more focused on finding something useful to Laboni and her racer, the large orange and blue scaled Vosk had been too subtle when attempting to engage Lemgem in conversation.
This time was different. Still wearing the majority of her armor, sans helmet, Haastaskin approached the blue haired gnome racer and stood over the smaller being until getting her attention.
"I see we have a likeness for the same color. But I am curious, what do you look to get from this race? You seem to have enough wealth."

GM Cellion |

Because socializing takes a bit of back and forth to resolve, I'll give an update on those now:
GMRoll: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Twik:
Orsis flips his hair back and sniffs condescendingly at Twik as the halfling approaches. "You're one of Laboni's mechanics, aren't you. You should know then that my machine is far superior to that claptrap Laboni assembled. Fabulous condition is right, this racer I've brought is a work of ART!" His fans cheer and he smirks. Despite his words, its clear you've managed to stroke his ego.
"Now I'm all for racing fairly, so there'll be no agreements or alliances, as much as your girl desperately needs them. But! To make this racer a little more interesting, and to give your team a fighting chance, I'll give you a few pointers." He smiles confidently at you before winking at his fans. They erupt into another cheer. Orsis' tips, if you're willing to use them, grant a +2 insight bonus to piloting checks during the race. You can pass them on to whoever is driving the vehicle.
Haastaskin:
Lemgem is hard at work welding some kind of spiraling tube to an aperture on the side of her racer as Haastaskin approaches. Red and purple fluids stain her overalls (and the floor and walls of her workshop). The rest of her pit crew is staying well away from her. She releases the welder, raises her goggles and grins maniacally at the approaching vesk. "HAH! Blue totally rocks!!! Though I was thinking maybe upgrading it before the race to something a little more like *pshooooom* *crackle-crackle*???" She makes sounds effects as she mimes out some kind of electrical explosion. "Or maybe not!!! SO many options and SO little time to try everything!"
Once Haastaskin manages to get her question in about Lemgem's motives, the gnome responds immediately with "It is AWESOME out there!!! Ratrod has made a TOTALLY SICK track and I just LOVE taking out my best new experiment and frikkin SMASHING IT AGAINST THE CHALLENGE!!!" Her eyes gleam with excitement.

"Success!" rings out within the minds of anyone close enough to the formian when she finally finds adequate material for plating. Once she has delivered it to Laboni, she returns to the scrap pile to find more.

Ella nods. "That is a reasonable agreement. If your craft is faster, then you can target the other racers better. I am willing to help you. Please allow me access to your tools."
Ella begins working on Velocity's vehicle, trying to increase the base speed. She works to maximize the air intake manifolds and optimize the fuel combustion.

Round 3
Satisfied with the response from Orsis and figuring that the Lashunta is too clued in to put up with more, Twik joins Haastaskin to talk to Lemgem.
Waving a hand at the matching blueness of his colleague & Lemgem, Twik begins to appeal to her..."My blue friend here is a good match for yourself. Imagine it - two blue racers finishing first and second! Sounds wonderful right? Whaddoyasay? An alliance! Just think! The people will line up for your augmentations when they see how amazing they are! The best way to do that is to do well in the race! But not too well. Unfortunately, the time round Laboni needs to win but there will be a next time I promise!"

ROUND 3:
Twik and Haastaskin join forces to talk to Lemgem, who, upon hearing Twik's additional offer responds at the top of her lungs with "WHAAAAT! TEAMING UP WITH LABONI?!? She's a total drag, real boring. She needs some color in her life!!!" She dances to the side and picks up a spray can. Shaking it rapidly she says "You two seem cool. How 'bout this. I help her out today, but only if she lets me give her a bit of an... UPGRADE!!!" She sends a jet of luminescent pink spray paint out in an arc, grinning crazily. "No more boring lab coat! Bring in the FUN!"
To keep the rounds moving: Laboni acquiesces to this offer, looking uncomfortable, when you bring it to her. "If it'll help us win..." is her only response.
When you return to Lemgem, she had painted the whole of her racer in luminescent pink with lime green stripes. "ALRIGHT! I'm gonna keep that Rat-rube off her tail for you two!!! Oh and did you know that guy has special tech??? When you shoot him with lasers they're all *woooomf woomf* his racer just eats 'em up!!!"
---
Meanwhile Kalkan scrounges up an almost-pristine tesla coil and enough wiring to get it hooked up to Laboni's racer. With some quick work, he integrates the new weapon. (Yep, with all scouting checks successful, there's no more benefit to additional scouting)
Ella spends the hour working on Velocity's racer as the android hovers around her, mentally taking notes on the improvements made. As she wraps up, he leans in and says "Excellent. Ingenious even. I would never have considered removing the thasteron-derived components from the fuel. Are they truly of no use in engines of this scale?" He revs the engine in place and checks the readouts from his equipment. "This is... beautiful. Thank you. Was it LA64397F? Would you consider working entirely in my pit crew next race?" (You've secured the alliance with Velocity for this race regardless of your answer)
Round 4:
Solenopsi returns with even more armor plating, earning an excited "Perfect!" from Laboni as she quickly welds it to the less defended side of the vehicle.
Arnold keeps up his own diligent work on the racer, this time giving it a coat of red paint!

![]() |

Kalkan admires the new weapon and smiles. He thinks to anyone nearby, "The symmetry on this machine is so bothersome. To many engines, not enough firepower. Be right back."
Engineering: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17 Kinetic weapon this time!
He runs through the scrapyard, aware that time is running out. Gatling gun, gatling gun, gatling gun, gatling gun He finds an old engine belt, some PVC piping and a high powered motor. "No promises, but I might be able to do something with this."

![]() |

The formian stares at the junk racer. "It appears unlikely to explode," her comment intrudes upon the Starfinder pit crew.

GM Cellion |

Kalkan pulls together some promising, if well-worn, components and spends his last hour in full MacGyver mode. At the end of the experiment he's 43 paperclips poorer and the proud owner of a new compressed air gatling cannon!
It's a simple matter to get it hooked onto Laboni's racer and ready to fire.

GM Cellion |

A loud, squeaky voice calls out through the loudspeakers set around the junkyard "A-HEM! 30 minutes until race start time. That's 30 minutes until you can see ME, RATROD, paste that snotty Laboni into the GROUND! RATROD OUT!"
I'll assume Ella, Hastaskin and Twik take no action for the final round if I don't hear from you in 24 hours.
--------------
Once the last improvements are made: You congregate back at Laboni's workshop to admire the fruits of your labors. The newly upgraded racer is a well plated, speedy machine, with three weapons sticking out of apertures on its surface. It looks far more deadly than just four hours prior.
"This is... AMAZING!" Laboni grins from ear to ear "You guys managed something crazy here! And I hear some of our opponents might be going light on us too? The only thing it needs still is a name. And since you all worked so hard on it, it's only fair that you name it!"
As you guys discuss the name, she hesitantly adds "Now there IS one more problem, though I think I have a solution for it..." She picks up what looks like a set of joysticks from the nearby workbench.
"You see... I'm not actually a very good driver. Actually, I'm a total amateur. So I put together something a little special to make this work. A remote control system!" She grins a little sheepishly. "I'll be in the racer, but I'm hoping that the rest of you can control the steering and weapons remotely. It's a little unorthodox, but it's the best chance we have for winning!"
"Please, I'm counting on you all!"

![]() |

Twik wanders back to Nyizin's base to try and convince the ryphorian to help out.
"Hi friend, I couldn't help but notice on my previous visit that you seem desperate. Well, we are somewhat desperate in some ways as well. Perhaps we can help one another?"

Round four
After leaving Twik to complete the agreement with Lemgem and the details afterwards, Haastaskin quietly slips away. Heading back towards Leboni's pit, she performs one more search for something to help improve the control of the human woman's racer.
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14 Check to improve piloting

![]() |

Noting that Ratrod has a single energy weapon, Ella takes some of the improvements she saw on Velocity's racer and applies them to Laboni's. She is able to find some spare reflective paint to coat the armor in.
Engineering: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17 Improve EAC

GM Cellion |

During the final round of improvments:
Haastaskin does a last minute search for components that would improve the controls of Laboni's racer, and though she spots one or two promising items, they don't prove particularly effective. Unfortunately failed to improve
Ella spends her last hour painting the racer (to a more reflective shade of red, after Arnold does his work). As the last minute call rings out on the speakers, she wraps up her work, standing back to admire the new reflective coating. Improvement succeeded!
Twik stops by to speak with Nyizin. He finds her in the cockpit of her racer, meditating. She seems to ignore him when he speaks, but peels one eye open to regard him balefully. "There is no desperation here little one, though your human girl certainly seems to have sullied Ratrod's honor with her claim. I will not ally with one with such lack of respect for her elders." She runs a finger along one of her scars "I am here to win in honor of my partner, who fell in battle not three moons prior. I will do whatever it takes to achieve that goal."
Her strong desire to win will likely stop her from allying with you, but it may be possible to get some other aid from her if you play your cards right. To wrap the round up, feel free to give me one more interaction.
--------
EAC 11, KAC 14
Piloting +3
Ranged Attacks -3 (Energy Weapon (Artillery laser), Energy Weapon (Tesla coil), Kinetic Weapon (Gatling Cannon))

GM Cellion |

In that case: Nyizin remains uninterested in your offers of alliances, and soon you hear a loudspeaker announcing the imminent start of the race.
When you all return, Laboni goes through the spiel detailed here.

![]() |

So how does this work? ... Do we need to choose a pilot and 3 gunners from among us? Or can one person do multiple things?

GM Cellion |

I think there's nothing stopping one person from taking multiple roles, but its more fun if more people get a chance to roll something, so I'd suggest splitting it up.

![]() |

Kalkan rolls his eyes. It's things like this which make me wish I hadn't left Verces. He sighs and speaks aloud. "Stop. You mean to tell us that you challenged one of the greatest racers on the station? Despite not being a real racer..." His mandibles shake with frustration.
He backs up and turns to the Starfinders. "Well, we best make the best of it. Three guns and one steering wheel. Any volunteers?"
I have Piloting +7, +3 to hit.
Can the other two players assist, or is it just four people who can play?

![]() |

Solenopsi blankly stares at Laboni with her multifaceted eyes for several moments. Eventually, she forces her thoughts into your minds, [i]"I have never had a reason to pilot a machine, but I can aim."

![]() |

Twik bounces up and down with a big grin on his face. "I'll help. I'll help"
+11 Piloting, +7 to hit (assuming it works like Starship Combat)

GM Cellion |

Laboni looks down at the ground, ashamed, as Kalkan criticizes her. "I know, I was out of line. But that Ratrod really made me mad, and I just couldn't help it!" She brightens at Twik's bouncy enthusiasm, looking at the rest of you with relief "Phew, glad you guys are willing to help! I was worried for a moment."
Each round of the race, each pilot will attempt to drive forward at their maximum speed using a piloting check. This piloting check is based on the pilot's piloting skill check plus the racer's piloting modifier. (For Laboni's Racer, this is a +3) Failing this check means they can only drive at half speed for that round.
Each racer can also fire any and all of their weapons at other racers on the track each round (weapons can target any other racer and are not limited by range). They do so by choosing targets and making ranged attack rolls with each weapon against the enemy racer's EAC or KAC, as appropriate. The ranged attack roll is based on the gunner's normal ranged attack roll (not using Starship rules), modified by the weapon's ranged attack modifier (For Laboni's racer, this is a -3). With three weapons, this means you can make three attacks every round. A hit against an enemy racer applies a penalty to that racer's pilot's piloting check for that round. Multiple hits from different weapons stack their penalties!
To answer your questions: Unfortunately you cannot assist on these piloting or attack rolls. People aren't necessarily locked into their roles during the race. If you want to switch who is firing guns or acting as the pilot mid-race, you can (and if we're waiting on someone to post, you may as well). And firing weapons here works like normal ranged attacks (not like starship combat).
Feel free to suss out who is taking what role to start with, along with your racers name. Next post I'll get the race started.

![]() |
Well, with those modifiers, I am happy to just have this be the 'Twik versus the GM' show :-)

After Labori's last words, Haastaskin walks over to the human woman until the Vesk is standing directly over the human. Looking down into Labori's face Haastaskin's gaze is harsh, clear, and unblinking as she stares into the human girl's eyes. After a moment of staring at the human mechanic she speaks.
At first Haastaskin speaks to her in Vesk
Then in Common
“No matter if you win or lose Laboni, after the race you will publicly apologize to Ratrod. If you don't I will then and there challenge you to personal hand to claw combat.”

![]() |

Kalkan looks at Haast awkwardly. I mean, she's not necessarily wrong. Just a little harsh. The Shirren slowly turns and claps his hands together once. "Well, from the sound of that, Haast probably isn't to bad at shooting. Solenopsi can take the second gun. " He turns to Twik and bows slightly. "We would be honored if you would take the wheel and show us your famed skills. " Then, he turns to the remaining two. "Arnold, are you sure you do not wish to man a gun? You look quite capable. "
Arnold, you have a Dex of +4 (and a BAB of 1?), 2nd best in our group. I think you should take it.
He thinks to the android directly. "No offense, LA, but I think you and I are better suited for being the pit crew. "

![]() |

"Direct me to the targeting controls," the formian states imperatively with your minds.

![]() |

LA looks at the Shirren. "Why would I take offense at a statement which is true? The others are obviously more suited to this task than you or I. Our capabilities in this area are unremarkable." She smiles.

GM Cellion |

If Laboni seemed contrite before, she practically cowers when Haastaskin lectures her in both Vesk and Common. As soon as the vesk is done, she nods rapidly "I'll ABSOLUTELY apologize to Ratrod, I swear!" You all catch her sneaking glances at Haastaskin's claws and her own hands and shuddering.
Seeing that none of her intrepid pit crew seem to have an opinion about the craft's name, she enters the racer in as "Top-Gun". (Feel free to change it if you'd like!)
----------------------------
Before long all of you are in the track-side pit, looking out at the arrayed racers (including Laboni, strapped in and ready to "drive" Top-Gun). Lemgem waves enthusiastically to the crowd, then picks up paint guns in both hands and fires jets of pink and blue paint in all directions while screaming in excitement! Once the guns are exhausted, she leaps into her vehicle. Nyizin stalks over to her sleek looking giant skull of a racer and glares daggers at the crowd before letting out a fierce battle cry! Orsis wraps up a meet and greet at track side and glides elegantly towards his massive sphere of a racer. Velocity regards the crowd serenely, then gives a sweeping bow and enters their own bulky looking racer. Laboni closes her eyes as a chorus of boos from the stands greets her. Nevertheless, she manages to steel herself and she gives a short wave towards the stands. She sends a single wide-eyed glance at the group of you in the pit before focusing on the track ahead of her.
With everyone other than Ratrod ready to go, the crowd begins to chant for the host and champion to show himself. "RAT-ROD, RAT-ROD, RAT-ROD!" The chorus is deafening! In answer to their call, a red suited ysoki strides out, accompanied by a color coded pyrotechnic display. Ratrod waves and bows to the crowd and strides across the track to get into his hi-tech junkracer. He pauses just before entering, looks towards Laboni, and draws a thumb across his neck, to an explosion of cheers from the audience!
From the open air announcer's booth, a turquoise haired human girl leans over the railing with a microphone and begins to call out a welcome...

![]() |

"Hellooooo Absalom Station! Coming to you from Ratrod's famous racing circuit here in Botscrap, it's the idol dreaming of the stars, LYNN!!!" Her voice giggles out through the speakers and into the infosphere. "And we have some A-MAZE-ING stars here today and READY TO RAAAAACE!" Her voice resonates out through the loudspeakers with excitement.
"We have some favorites racing out here today! Five experts on the circuit and one girl with guts. But we'll get to her later. First, our generous host Ratrod!~ Thanks for inviting me back Ratrod, its always zetta fun!" She giggles into the mic. "This ysoki's a master of magic and tech, a demon behind the wheel, and knows the circuit like its the back of his furry hand! Can anyone even hope to beat the master at his own race? Lets find out!"
Lynn takes a deep breath and continues in a rush.
"First off, the gnome who never learned the meaning of too much, LEMGEM! With every upgrade this side of Bretheda, will this gnome bounce her way to victory, or is she bouncing right into a junk heap?" She softens the harsh words with a laugh and a "Third time's a charm Lemmy! I believe in you!"
"Next, the ryphorian with a degree in high-octane thrillseeking, its NYIZIN! That sleek fur is gonna have zero drag today, and that racer, whoa! This one looks even faster than last time! Will we see the magical energies of Triaxus at work this evening? I know I want to find out!"
"Lets not forget the lashunta with... OH that IS a lot of fans in the stands! Yes, its your favorite, ORSIS!" Lynn pauses a moment to let the crowd get some cheers out of their systems "Well if his racer could run using the love of his fans, he'd already be on the podium. Let see if that big ball of a junkracer can take him to victory."
"Always a crowdpleaser, its VELOCITY! This sleek android keeps their opponents in their sights and KAZOW!- takes them to pain town!" She giggles at the lame joke "That's right, Velocity is packing guns and a deadly aim, lets just hope they found a way to supercharge that engine this time!"
"And finally, the newbie on the circuit, representing the beaten but not broken Starfinder Society, its LABONI! She may be new, but she's called out Ratrod and she's not backing down. And her racer, TOP-GUN..." Lynn pauses for a moment "One, two, THREE! Three guns on that bright red racer! Looks like Laboni is not messing around!"
Lynn finishes with a flourish "Good luck racers! Race fair and make your fans proud! Hope no-one explodes out there!"

"Alright! Time for some fun! Let's win this thing....and trash Ratrod while we're at it! Don't forget that his racer absorbs energy weapon blasts. Best to aim the kinetic weapon at him!"
Piloting: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23
I assume that Ratrod is going to be our main competition here so my suggestion would be to have our best shot on the kinetic weapon aiming at him (or whoever else is the leader) the whole race.

After Laboni agrees to her conditions , Haastaskin steps away from the human woman and spends time quietly to herself alternating between eating, polishing her armor and praying.

As soon as the green light is given, the track explodes into tumultuous action! Each of the racers seems to be slamming down on their accelerator while firing all weapons systems as quickly as possible in every possible direction. Laser fire, plasma, steel lances, cannon shells, deadly projectiles of all types slam in equal measure into the track, the junk piles, and the racers!
Solenopsi's tesla coil blast arcs harmlessly off the tough armor of Orsis' sphere racer. Haastaskin's artillery laser has much better luck, penetrating the tough outer armor and sending a plume of smoke up from the burning opening! At the same time, the gatling cannon fires shell after shell at Ratrod's racer, forcing the ysoki into evasive maneuvers mere feet before the starting line!
Meanwhile, Lemgem's bulbous racer shoots out what look like streamers at Nyizin's racer. When those rainbow-colored streams reach the skull-ish vehicle, a massive current of electricity lances along them!
Orsis sends a steel lance from his sphere's cannon straight into Lemgem's machine as well!
Out of the madness, Lemgem's racer speeds ahead, paint-based booster jets spreading pink in a wave behind her. The steel lance hardly seems to bother her. Nyizin similarly seems to maintain control despite the beating, as does Ratrod. Only Orsis' sphere seems to be slightly manfunctioning, spending him briefly careening into a pile of junk before he recovers enough to bring up the rear.
As the smoke from Round 1 clears, Top-Gun is in the lead!

As the racers approach the first major turn, each of the pilots send a major wave of fire at each other, hoping to knock someone off the track!
Haastaskin's artillery laser strikes successfully again, boring another charred hole in Orsis' machine. Ella's gatling gun delivers a direct hit on Ratrod's racer as well, forcing the ysoki to eject a layer of his badly dented armor plating. Solenopsi's tesla coil strikes true against Lemgem, scorching her racer and sending the smell of burning marshmallows into the air!
Lemgem's rainbow taser strikes another hit against Nyizin while Velocity sends a hail of bullets into Ratrod's machine. Ratrod somehow managed to concentrate through this abuse (to the cheers of his fans) to fire his plasma launcher, scoring a direct impact on Top-gun!
Despite all this punishment, most of the racers manage to stay in control of their vehicles. Lemgem's paint boosters continue to blast away. The runes on Nyizin's skull racer glow with energy and massively boost her speed (Though from the way they smoke afterward, that may have been a one time deal). Only poor Orsis is sent into another junkpile, falling even further behind.

"Alliance? No one said anything about an alliance," the formian's thoughts bore into Haastaskin's mind.
I'm pretty sure we failed to win Lemgem over with a Culture check scoring 6.
She adjusts her targeting again as Nyizin pulls equal with Laboni.
Tesla Coil: 1d20 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (19) + 2 - 3 = 18

Twik continues to control the racer, his hands moving with precision, while the bottom of his body bounces up and down in his chair.
Piloting: 1d20 + 11 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 11 + 3 = 18

It was Nyizin that we failed the culture check with.
"Analysis of the situation dictates that we should focus the energy weapons on Nyizin, while we continue with the gatling gun against Ratrod. We can outrun Orsis easily, and with Lemgem and Velocity on our side, we have high chances to win."
LA targets Ratrod again and lets loose with a stream of bullets.
Gatling Gun: 1d20 + 3 - 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 - 3 = 5

In the second straightaway, the racers quickly re-arm and re-aim their weapons. There's barely five seconds of relative quiet before another wave of fire is exchanged, this time to FAR more devastating results.
Solenopsi blasts Nyizin with the tesla coil, the force of the electricity leaving the skull blackened and sending jolts throughout the vehicle. Ella's attack on Ratrod is foiled by the ysoki keeping his distance from the hail of metal.
Lemgem lands her own blast of electricity, delivered by rainbow taser, onto Nyizin's vehicle. Velocity in turn fires his chaingun at Lemgem. The bullets riddle the massive paint canisters full of holes and leave the gnome struggling to drive straight.
Orsis continues to fire his spear-thrower from the rear, this time landing a lucky shot on Top-gun! Ratrod similarly focuses on Laboni's racer, sending another accurate blast of plasma into its side.
This time round, Twik has a lot more trouble keeping the racer running at top speed. The impact from the plasma blast almost sends Laboni careening into a nearby junk pile, but a last minute correction saves her. Unfortunately, Top-gun is slowed down significantly this round as Twik tries to get back up to max speed.
Lemgem has her own problems. With her paint boosters still running but blasted with holes, her racer skirts left and right across the track erratically, slowing her down.
But worst off is Nyizin. The ryphorian screams in rage as she fights through smoke and a sudden fire in her engine compartment. Unfortunately, in her anger she doesn't see the upcoming turn, and she ends up slinging off the track and into a massive wall of used mattresses.
With his rivals struggling, Ratrod slips into the lead!
