Raven Hawthorne |
Let's just say Raven was so stunned by the near-death experience, that he skipped a round. As for his other action...
Scenting blood, Raven gingerly floats into the room, moving up to the Uninjured creature (Immediately south of it), and takes a swing!
Claw: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16, for 1d8 + 12 + 2d6 ⇒ (2) + 12 + (2, 1) = 17 Magical, Good, S/B damage.
Yep. Pretty useless :-/

Boom. He's dead.
Kinda funny to be outside 1 range increment and yet still within Point Blank range.
Immediately following the fight, Rotann rushes to the side of his nearest companion, Rost, and applies a use of his Wand of Fiendish Healing.
Rost'Nomn Azahithael |
@ Rotann - How much does that heal?
Rost shuddered back to consciousness and felt pain like he had never felt before. His skin seemed to burn still and felt tight and stretched across his slim body. He groaned and fumbled his way through a spell to add further healing to his wracked body.
Cure Moderate Wounds: 2d8 + 6 ⇒ (2, 1) + 6 = 9
Rotann |
While a single touch of the wand starts to heal the burns, and returns some colour to the healthy parts of his skin, where it is in tact, Rost still appears a mess, and gravely injured. When it is clear that he is alive, and that he will survive, Rotann moves over to where Darnak fell. A glance is enough to tell that he was not as lucky as his peer.
"Darnak is dead. He was close to the creature, and took the brunt of the flame. He was burned to a cinder. Peace, fine warrior. May Pharasma judge you well and conduct you to the halls of the Builder. "
Afterwards, he will move back over to Rost, where his furst touch of the wand is now wearing off. He touches him again, activating the spell a second time. Gain another 10 HP. While Rost is healing he will collect what can be used from Darnak's body. "We will complete this challenge, friend, yesss! Your belongings will be returned to your kin, but for now I hope you will allow us to make use of them, and thus complete what you have helped us start!"
Rigor Rictus |
The team wraps Darnak in his cloak and uses it to carry the frighteningly light remains outside. The heat seems to have robbed the dwarf of half his weight or more.
The crowd is quiet as they see the body brought out; the mood a bit somber. The mood does a complete flip as the dwarf in the contest, a fighter named Knur, comes running out of the Hall of Summoning, as fast as his short legs can carry him. His cloak is smoking and he has two flaming arrows actually sticking out of his armour in the back. In his hand he carries a glowingkey-light, like the seven we now bear. The crowd goes wind at the sight of him.
However, it goes dead silent again as one, then two, then four figures fly from the entrance to the building with blinding speed. They are vaguely human looking, but each bears a pair of inky black wings and a bow of fire in its hands.
One of the winged creatures flies around the dwarf in a tight circle, it being obviously far faster and maneuverable than the man on foot. It throws out a rope that lashes itself around his ankles, and sends him sprawling to the ground. The key-light is dashed from his fingers as he hits the ground. Knur looks up, and tries to scramble back up to get to it. However, this is when the barrage of arrows begins to hit. They hit him, one, two , three, four, and more, pounding into him with force and a whoof of flames with each impact. Knur grunts and reaches out towards the key-light, and then screams as the arrows continue to rain down. Within seconds he is peppered with what must be ten arrows. Although he is clearly dead by this point, the flying figures continue to rain down fire upon him. By the time they finish just a few seconds later (2 rounds total), he has been pierced by some multitude of arrows. The creatures circle up into the sky, and then vanish in a mystical shower of sparks. The key-light flashes once, and then vanishes as well.
By the time you approach the body (which is on the way to the hall of wards), only charred bones and armour remain. There must be two dozen arrows now burning away, and it appears that not one missed.

Rigor Rictus |
The team bypasses the smoldering corpse of the dwarf and moves on to the doors of the Hall of Wards. The key-lights are passed around so that each person has one in hand. Placing the key-light on the eastern entrance to the hall causes the door to creak ominously open, revealing roiling darkness within. Moving together, the group approaches the wall and holding their key-lights, walk through it as though it is not even there.
There is an odd sensation as you move through the doorway and its inky black wall; as if a sameness you had grown so used to that you couldn't even tell it was there anymore is suddenly gone. Gone, and replaced with something...different.
You appear in a stone room that is nearly empty, save a sourceless, orange ambient light and a small table full of empty, stoppered crystal vials with peeling, faded labels. The outline of a door can be faintly seen in the wall behind you, though the wall is solid and seamless. A heavy iron door to the south looms ominously; a man’s horribly mutilated body lies in a patch of dried blood on the ground before this exit.
Angelo Fortunato |
"Rotann, sssee anything trap wissse?" Angelo asks. If he receives an all clear he will approach the table with detect magic focused and look at the potions.
Rigor Rictus |
There are no magic auras on the table, or visible anywhere in the room.
The vials on the table are all empty, and their lead stoppers are still tightly sealed. Each has a discolored piece of parchment peeling from its side; most are completely illegible.
Rigor Rictus |
The body is that of Maganrad; one of your co-competitors. The cause of his death is not evident, but from the nature of his wounds and the manner of bleeding, it is evident that his body was thus mutilated after death had already occurred. The damage was inflicted by claws from massive five fingered hands. Other than his tattered robes, he has nothing of interest or value.

Despite all of his burns being healed; Rost could still feel the tightness of his skin and smell the char of his flesh. He shook the horrid thoughts from his white haired head and tried to focus on the task at hand but was having trouble. Something Raven said sparked his interest though.
All of the bottles have your name on them? Thats strange but probably just the tip of the iceberg for this place.
He got sidetracked again when he spotted the scrolls...whats this?... The young Aasimar absent mindedly cast a spell to detect any magic on them before unrolling one of them.
Rigor Rictus |
Rost: One of the scrolls is magic, and when you check the title it reads 'Break Enchantment'. The second one is not magical. It is covered in even rows of extremely dense, archaic looking writing. The fist it is written in is so small that even deciphering the language it is written in may be a challenge.
When Rotann opens the door, nothing happens. There is a hall beyond. Multiple doors end onto the hall, but all appear to be closed at the present time, and all appears quiet.
Raven Hawthorne |
How many doors, and where are they in relation to where we are now?
Rigor Rictus |
The hall is some 80 ft long, running east/west, and the room you occupy would appear to be the last room North of the hall on the western end. There is a door opposite this one on the southern side of the hall. Further down to the west there is a another set of doors facing each other, then further down past those another set of doors, these ones double sets. Finally, the hall terminates on the eastern end in a large set of double doors.
Rigor Rictus |
A: The first door (Labeled A on the map) is down the hall to the East, but still on the North side of the hall. The door is tall and wide, and covered in beaten copper. It is ornate without being too ostentatious. There are no signs of traps or magic on the door, but there is a curious sound coming from the room; it sounds like rustling pages, or flapping wings, or some combination of the two. It is quite loud, and most of the party can hear it without straining too hard to hear.
B: These wide double doors match the single door that was the last to be examined (A). The flapping/rustling sound also eminates from this set of doors, indicating that either the room on the other side is connected to the last one, or whatever was occurring in that room is occurring in this one as well. The handles are a touch more warn, which along with the double set entrance tells that these are probably the main doors to the room. There is no sign of traps or wards.
C: These massive doors reach some twenty feet tall and look like the entrance-way into some grand room. They are polished brass, and look very heavy. There is a worn spot where many, many hands have pushed at the door over the years, but it is about 8 ft off the ground. There is no sign of traps, magic, or wards on the door. Beyond the door, the sound of deep voices can be heard. Rotann cannot identify the language, but it sounds as though they are arguing.
D: The double doors leading to this room are made of wood, and quite old. They look like they were likely fine once, but are now beaten and dented in a hundred different places. The dents look as though carts or crates have been smashed into it a thousand times over the years. There is no sign of magic or traps on these doors either. However, there is a powerful mixture of smells emanating from the room; caustic, sickly sweet, foul, and ever sterile smells, all layered one over another.
E: This door is bound in iron, and looks service oriented as opposed to decorative like some of the others. There is no sign of traps. A sound can be heard, moaning as if in pain, accompanied by occasional sobs of tears. It is a woman's voice.
F: This door is fine wood, scraped here and there, but otherwise in good shape. All in all, it might the most unassuming of the doors. No smells, no sounds. There are no traps or magical auras either.
Rigor Rictus |
F: The door is not locked and opens easily.
This room resembles an academic’s office, albeit the office of a very messy professor. Tattered books and broken furniture lie strewn across the floor. Some long-congealed dark liquid pools on the floor beneath a solid cascade of the same substance along the south wall, and what appear to be bone spurs protrude from the dark wooden wall surrounding a densely packed shelf on the opposite end of the small chamber. Bones from dozens of creatures rest in neat piles on the bookshelves, with the skull from each sitting atop its stack, staring into the room with vacant, hollow eyes.
Raven Hawthorne |
"What charming decor this place has."
Raven gingerly searches the room.
Perception: 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (1) + 26 = 27.
He *is* distracted ;-)
Rigor Rictus |
Fortunately, there is no Auto-Fail rule on skill checks.
Searching through the bones and detritus, Raven spots a scroll hidden behind a collection on one of the densely packed shelves. With a little maneuvering, he works it free.
Checking the title, it is labeled as a scroll of Banishment
There appears to be nothing else of interest in this room.
