Here and ready! If you need any help navigating the online world of this we can definitely help. Also, are you familiar with using google maps for battle? If not, that's something I can help you with, which could include some map creating if needs be. I have the AP and will definitely not meta-game, but I know I like the added dimension of actually seeing your battles laid out.
Here's an example of what I'm talking about: MAP
This is a little scrape my pc's are about to get into in my Carrion Crown game.
If you already know all about this please ignore everything I just said, except the being willing to help part!

Johnny Porters |

Does anyone have a fourth in mind. I know a guy good post rate and roleplay.

![]() |

Hello, and welcome. All help is welcomed, I 'll ask if I got stuck in something.
Starting with... There are no thread, subforums nor pages, right? No way to store images "in-site"?
About the fourth player.. Invite him. By the way, I am not against a 6-8 characters group, expecially at this adventure path.

Johnny Porters |

No images in site most people use google docs or some other storage area and link to it using campign tab. I also have a way to put battle maps on google docs I can show you if you want. I can send you the instructions when I get home tonight.

Garion Erada |

I store everything in Google Drive. Similar to my map, I keep my player stats, maps, images, etc in there for easy access. And in Drive you can set certain documents and maps to be able to be edited by anyone who has a link, just viewable, or just keep it private to yourself. This way with a battle map everyone can move their tokens. And since a lot of stuff gets lost in the forums, like something they researched like 5 pages ago, which happened in real time a few weeks ago and no one will remember that bit of info, I keep a document open for everyone to access that has all the stuff they researched on there as well as anything else I can think of. I set it to where they can edit it as well, this way if they think something is important they can add it. Google Drive is an awesome tool!

Garion Erada |

And as far as answering some of your questions about the characters, I don't necessarily try to think mine too far in advance. I like to see where the AP and the party takes him. Obviously I have some ideas due to his background, but I generally put my characters in a position to really become anything they want to be, within some of the confines of race/class and such.
Garion was an orphan with no particularly large ambition. He's spent most of his life just kind of living moment by moment. He's worked hard to make a way for himself, but up until this point he never thought he would do anything big. He enjoyed the life of guiding and hunting, helping the orphanage, and the friends he had made. This is the biggest step he's ever taken and he's figuring out at each step what this will make him. He's CN alignment, so the right amount of push in one direction or the other could give him a dark thirst for power or a righteous call to the greater good. I like to play pc's that lean in the good direction, so that's more likely for Garion, but I also like the moral struggle and can't say that he'll always stay on the straight an narrow.
I hope that's not too vague for you, but I just don't like the people who have a strict plan for their characters from level 1-20 and don't want to deviate too far from that. The closest to a plan I've though of is that I might like to make a pure ranger, no archetypes, no prestige classes, just go through the whole AP perfecting a range fighting ranger. But, like I said, that may change depending on what else happens. So, I hope that answers your questions! If you've got any more feel free to ask.

OK, so for storing stuff everything is off site...
About the carrer path for Garion, it's simple and flexible, and that is good. We got and orphanage, and that is better.
We can start with that.

Garion Erada |

Do you mean Garren?

Johnny Porters |

Johnny will be able to post later tonight kids have track meet baseball and other assorted stuff but short he is running from the underworld from port ice they wqnted him to pay theives tax but he didnt want to so he ran off with Garren

![]() |

Background is nice, but I want to know your ideas for Johnny 's future too.

Garren Kodlak |

What do you want for your character (love, fame, fortune)?
Garren wants to aid the community. He wants to foster whatever developing communities he can. We'll see what role he can play in the greenbelt as time goes on.
Do you have some plot points, themes or npcs to appear (find his father, fight the opression, a nice bartender)?
Nope, Garren brought most of his life south with him. His friends and family walked into Oleg's with him.
Some magic item you want to try out, or your character will need in the future (a nice flaming sword, something to raise the wis, etc)?
Generic cleric gear. +wis items, +diplomacy items, stuff fitting Erastil. Some kind of magic bow
Which progression path are you thinking? Some arquetype? Some school of magic, some church branch?
Cleric. That's about it. Garren's going to be a cleric of Erastil from now 'til the day he dies. If they put out an Erastil specific PrC, maybe I'll look into that.

![]() |

Hey! I think Garren invited me to this thread, so tagging it. :) What kinda characters do you need, if you still need?
Welcome!
Well, we have a Rangel, a rogué and a cleric, so right now there are no magic users nor melee characters. But don't let that stop you!
If there are no magic users, I will make a campaign where magic is few and dangerous(a favorite of mine). If no melee characters the encounters will be designed to be resolved with strategy and diplomacy more than str and con.
So, feel free, and the Stolen Lands await!

Really nice! Thank you very much. Feel free to créate a PrC for Erastil if you want, just show It out to me first.

A leader with a shady past.... Love it,,, lets see what Johnny wants for the future.

Garion Erada |

Welcome lexibean! I know we are creating a new game, but the other three characters were built on this skeleton. If the DM wants something different I'm sure he'll tell you. This is the thread that was our game before the DM split. Anyhow, any questions let us know! Looking forward to it.

Garion Erada |

Yeah, I believe that's what he meant. The 1/2hp was just after leveling, you start with full. And yes, we all have three traits which includes one campaign related.

Johnny Porters |

What do you want for your character (love, fame, fortune)?
Johnny had a terrible childhood between an abusive father and no mother be ended up on the streets fending for himself. He wants a place he can call his own. A home a wife kids that sort of normal life. Do to his troubles with the underworld he left and turned all his extra money into gear.
Do you have some plot points, themes or npcs to appear (find his father, fight the opression, a nice bartender)?
He is looking to prove to himself he can be good. it was just the situation not the man that caused him to be who he is. So he is more apt to try and save a scoundrel as to just kill him / her.
Some magic item you want to try out, or your character will need in the future (a nice flaming sword, something to raise the wis, etc)?
Johnny doesn't personally know about magic items a lot he has seen them and even toyed with them when he stole... uh procured them but he has no grand desire for them.
but as a player I like shinies.
Which progression path are you thinking? Some arquetype? Some school of magic, some church branch?
Figured straight rogue maybe two weapon fighting at some time but I think he will evolve.as the stiry does.

Johnny Porters |

Hey Lexi welcome aboard. Witches are fun especially slumber.

About the character creation:
- 3 feats, one campaign related
- HP: FULL EVERY LEVEL.

Nice, liked what you wrote... a safe heaven for people trying for a new beginning... nice.
About that, and asking all of you...
What about romance and even, god forbids, relationships in the game?
Got any problem with that?

Johnny Porters |

Johnny would like to have a relationship but feels he would have to be established before he could start anything serious.

Garion Erada |

I'm ok with pc's having relationships with NPC's. I'm having a very bad experience with two of my pc's in a game that are a couple in rl that are basically forcing their pc's together. They had it planned out before we even started and I've decided in future games I dm I'm probably not going to allow that. It needs to feel organic, and their relationship feels nothing but. So... that's how I feel about that.

Garren Kodlak |

I certainly don't mind my PC having a romantic relationship, as long as it seems organic.
I'd prefer certain aspects of that relationship remain offscreen, but I think that's stated somewhere in the forum rules so we should be fine there.

![]() |

Mmkay here is Veroca ... working on a bit of fluff now!
So we have a changeling here... Hope you don't mind me messing a little bit with your character...
I guess Veroca has heard the call, and she will be going to the stolen lands following it, right?Your patron is weird for your arquetype... And I like it that way, because I am going to use it as a plot point in the future :D
I think your attacks, the ranged ones, are off...
Give me some time and I will recommend other languages

Garion Erada |

Dang, I've always wanted to play a changeling! I even have the crunch worked out for one. I don't know how to play magic users that well, so watching you will give me some good experience. I'm probably a little too excited for this, but yeaa!

Veroca |

Yeah, I wanted to play her as a full on creepy changeling seducer enchanter - I know its wierd for Dreamspeaker, though I'm not really sure why, since Changelings seem to be focused on control, and Enchanting is a good patron for that...
I was actually thinking she lives out in the wilds somewhere. There wasn't really a trait reflecting that. :(
Anyway, mess away! :)

![]() |

Yes, that's what I ended up taking. :)
I still see the "Melee Crossbow" as out of place... :P

![]() |

Sorry, I have not advanced in putting this baby on the road as much as I wanted. I hope to do it today.
Don't be discouraged.

Garion Erada |

The fact that you're still posting and responding is all the assurance I need. I'm not discouraged!

![]() |

Well, I must confess this is my first time mastering play by post, so i have some fears and doubts... What do you think of this:
- There should be a schedule. You must always know you have x hours or day's to post before i move forward. That way you can plan your times and posts.
- i should not ask for you to roll and choose every single thing. That will make the game too slow. I must only requiere your input where its meningful... So, long posts for me, meningful choises for you.
- talking of which, combat... How to do It fast? Let you roll all the combat off-line? Sing. You for a bunch of rolls at a time? Asking you for gidelines and then doing IT all miself?
What do you think?
- side quest and cutscenes... One advantage i see is that you can "split the party" without much consecuence, dm master wise... Why don't have cutscenes and sidequests "extra" for the ones that want/can, beside a the Main adventure?
- Other site... I miss the subforums, and the abilitity to have pages for npcs, places, info... What about using other side besides/instead of this...
Well, tell me what you think, all your experience will help me

Garren Kodlak |

I'm going to start with this: everyone on these forums should read this thread.
-The paizo forums are some of the only forums I have access to at work. If you move to a different forum, I'll only be able to post once every 3 or 4 days with any kind of regularity.
-I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the schedule. If I haven't responded within 24 hours, assume Garren said something fatherly and attempts to keep the party on track.
-The only issue with running characters on side quests is posting speed. If Johnny runs off to the bandit camp and spends 3 days being all diplomatic while we manage to spend a week exploring, he's now stuck 4 days in the past.
Splitting the party is still bad, its just for different reasons.
-My recommendations for combat:
1) use the onboard dice roller. At least partially becuase I can't access dice rolling sites either.
2) You roll initiative. We act in bundles. If three of us are in the same "initiative clump" we can go in whatever order.
-Rolling stuff: You know our skills and such. If you need us to roll perception, do it in your post behind a spoiler. Then make other tags for people that see stuff.
Garren's Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
Johnny's Perception: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (16) + 17 = 33
Garion's Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (20) + 13 = 33

![]() |

Good to know you have limited access. Me too. ;) I would think to keep the "main" gaming sessions here, but use other places for reference material and side quests.
I mean that. When I said: "A couple kobolds push the rock over the cliff towards you: What do you do about it?" I'll add: You have until tonight at 21:00 to post. So you know that even if all the rest post their actions, jyou still have until 21:00 before beign "left behind". Maybe I should add the exception that if everyone posts before that we can move on... Or set a fixed time? What fixed time could that be?
Side quests: What about seeing them as "cutscenes". You all are going in the "main" adventure. But on the side (sidequests, get it) you are doing, on your own, other stuff. And I mean in other times. Johnny is dealing with the bandit camp six months in the future... alone...
Slip the party is bad... well, normally yes, but you can do it, if the situation presents itself... Not as a "normal" procedure. My point is that in "face to face" games I don't allow it.
Use the onboard roller... ok. Roll for you intead of waiting for all to roll a Saving throw or a perception check.... excellent idea.
Good nice recommendations, thanks... for the rest, any others?

Garion Erada |

In my game I have a bigger party, so I use a 4/6 rule, when four out of six people indicate they are ready to move on, we do. Maybe you can do a 3/4 or 2/4? I only make these exceptions for parts where I need to get everyone's input.
Battle can happen two ways in my opinion. One being the standard everyone follows initiative. I think with a party of four that we will have little problem getting everyone's posts in. The other way is allowing people to post out of initiative but in round order. I think that works when you have a much larger party. There are always the exceptions, and if a member hasn't posted in what I consider to be a reasonable time I just skip their turn in initiative or I bot their character with what I would assume they would do in the situation. No one should get offended by that in my opinion because everyone wants the game to move forward. I will sometimes allow them to act after the fact. I guess the key with pbp is to be loose with some of those things understanding that we're posting on a forum and real life happens, so some days work/family/life in general can keep you from posting. As long as its not days in-between I don't penalize anyone for missing a day here or there.
As far as splitting the party/cut scenes, where I think this is a neat idea for home games, the reality of pbp makes it more difficult in my mind. If a pc is already struggling to keep the pace of the main quest and also trying to post in a side one then burn out is inevitable, or at the very least one or the other or both story lines will suffer with mediocre responses. And as a DM I can say I don't like it when my parties decide to split because running two quests tandem is a pain in the @$$ and for instance right now my split parties are on two different times of the day and I'm going to have to just mash it together and make it work.
When it comes to rolls, I roll all major perception checks, initiative, saving throws, etc in a spoiler like Garren showed. Basically anything I need the whole party to do at once. Or if my poisonous spider manages to land a bit I'll roll that persons saving throw to say whether or not they're poisoned. At the same time I tell people to roll whatever rolls they find appropriate for the moment, because it can never hurt. It allows me as the DM to have some control over the pace while allowing the pc to have some choice as well. Of course, all battle stuff is the pc's roll unless I decide to bot someone through a turn.
Other sites - the only site I use outside of this like I mentioned before is google docs. I just link the map to the forum post and this way the pc's can click on it right from here. When making maps it's important to remember that you need to set the documents share setting to editable by anyone with a link. I don't know if I shared them before, but here are links to a battle map and then a reference doc that everyone can access that has to deal with research the pc's have done:
Battle Map
Feel free to play around with it, move the pieces so you can see how it works, they aren't currently using this one.
Other than that everything happens in this forum. I keep a spreadsheet in Google Docs to for all my need-to-know stuff as well as a template for any battles and rolls that I need to make. This way if I need to make perception checks I just copy/paste them into the forum and *poof*, there they are. This way you're not writing out [dice=Garion}1d20+5[/dice} and repeat for four characters including your bad guys every time.
I know this was a lot, but I hope that it was helpful!
