"Uh oh," Exiel mutters as he kicks off the ground and launches himself into the air, weaving a pattern in the air with his rapier to disperse the blasts of cold as he tries to twist his body out of the way.

"Brrr! That's COLD!
To be honest, I'm not too sure what to do. Depending on the amount of damage dealt, I'm most worried about Purs. And I think he might be the only one amongst us who can actually cast breath of life? Wait, iirc we got some special ward after we retrieved the first story-item?
Might be a good idea for Purs to pull back and get some cold resistance up, and for Amsheagar to turn into an ice elemental or something?
Would Earl be unaffected since he has not attacked yet and probably would have been gliding under the earth? Really wish I'd picked up a wall spell or other...
"Facing all four of them at once will be difficult. Purs, Amshegar, can either of you put up a big enough wall to let us divide and conquer?"
Exiel summons light from the celestial planes once more, fashioning it into bands that he then casts at the undead ice-queen in front of Rhon.
Might enable Rhon to get a coup de grace on her/it and keep her out of the fight for a turn or two.
If Purs goes unconscious but is still alive, Exiel will fly over his unconscious body and prepare to protect him from more AoEs using emergency force sphere. If not, he will fly up next to Rhon.
Bonus action crane style.

Complaints notwithstanding, Exiel manages to completely avoid all the cones of cold, but Amsheagar finds himself in a bind as he catches two of the blasts sqaure in the face! He quickly moves to Purs to administer some healing to the both of them.
I will roll the save against Exiel's spell now so that Rhon can decide his actions in light of it.
1d20 ⇒ 10
Meanwhile, Exiel casts his own spell at the ancient crone queen, and for once it is a spell of light instead of a dark necromancy spell. The crone queen almost manages to evade the magical chains, but ends up being tightly bound by them and trussed up helplessly before Rhon.
Exiel evades.
Amsheagar takes 172 cold damage. The 18s were fails but the 22 was a success. You cast your healing spell this turn, and heal back 32, so that is a net loss of 140hp. Now waiting for the rest of the party to take their turn.
Rhon and Purs and Purs' dog and Earl still need to make FOUR reflex saves each against the Cones of Cold.
Rhon and Purs are still up.

Purs takes 144 cold damage, which triggers the contingent breath of life that Baba Yaga had granted to each of you after you retrieved her athame.
breath of life: 5d8 + 25 ⇒ (8, 7, 6, 6, 1) + 25 = 53
Purs is blasted by the cold, and for a moment he feels like he is about to be overcome. As darkness begins to cloud his vision however, he feels something tugging at his soul, and some warmth returning to his body. It is not like the warmth of his own healing magic, however. It feels... somewhat polluted in a spiritual... but still preferable to the cold embrace of death.
Purs you are still alive but your special ward has been expended. You still need to roll for your dog, which was not given a ward. You took 144, healed 53 from a contingent breath of life and another 32 from Amsheagar's spell, for a net 59 hp lost this turn. You can also still act this turn.
Rhon still waiting for your saving throws and actions for this turn.

Purs' hound fares better at avoiding the many blasts of ice and cold, and manages to escape unscathed. Evasion is nice.
Undaunted by the danger, Purs gallops into battle and releases a burst of healing, determined to keep his friends alive at all costs.
Rhon still needs to make saves for himself and Earl.
Rhon is still up for actions this turn.

![]() |

Eeek! Well, you'll probably survive thanks to the same voodoo that saved Purs, but that appears to be a once-off. Dang, we need to buy some time to put up some resistance spells. Purs did a 25hp channel, so there's that... Do you have any way to get cold resistance or a reflex-save boost? Or just spam heals on yourself and hope for better rolls next time! Worst case, I'll try to shield Purs so he can BoL you.
GM is that door open or did it shut behind us? I may need to d-door us out of here to heal up.

![]() |

I can BoL as well, if need be. I have First Aid gloves (all 10 gems are still usable) and a scroll of BoL if needed.

![]() |

Exiel is right. Rhon survives thanks to Baba Yaga's ward, but it is indeed a once-off. Only Exiel and Amsheagar still have the ward active now.
Rhon also takes the full force of the cones of cold, for a moment he too feels like he is about to be overcome. As the cold begins to fade and he begins to drift towards the warmth of Torag's forge, he feels a tug, and then another and another, like greasy coiling ropes around his soul that pull him back into his body even as a cloying chill fills his wounds as it mends them ever so slightly. His eyes open once more, and he sees Earl crumbling away.
But Rhon Delver at least lives to fight a little longer.
breath of life: 5d8 + 25 ⇒ (7, 8, 2, 4, 6) + 25 = 52
Rhon failed all the saves and took a whopping 228 damage! But his contingent breath of life triggered healing him for 52, and Purs' channel healed him for another 25, for a net loss of 151hp.
Rhon can still take his actions this turn. Keep in mind that after this, it will be the crone queens again.

"It appears these things prefer cold. I wonder how they would fair against fire?" Rhon calls on Torag's forge fire to bind his wounds before once more turning his axe loose against the queen (blue) before him.

Sorry to be a pain GM, but just 'cos this seems like it's gonna be a difficult fight and in light of the unique challenges of pbp games, would you say that Purs should have an opportunity to have used his Unity ability to help Rhon or Amsheagar pass one of their saves?
Could I also change my movement again? If I saw that Rhon failed all his reflex saves before my turn came, I would probably have flown to his side and cast a quickened resist cold on him. Amshegar can then cast his resistance spell on himself and Purs next turn if we all survive.
Also would like to know about whether those doors behind us are open or closed. =D

![]() |

Purs: "Unity (Su): At 8th level, whenever a spell or effect targets you and one or more allies within 30 feet, you can use this ability to allow your allies to use your saving throw against the effect in place of their own. Each ally must decide individually before the rolls are made. Using this ability is an immediate action. You can use this ability once per day at 8th level, and one additional time per day for every four cleric levels beyond 8th."
Based on your character sheet, it would work for other types of saves. Could save a PC from death, but you could only have used it on either Amsheagar or Rhon, not both. Who will it be?
Exiel: Ok, but no more changes. And the inner doors are certainly open since you just entered through them. I think you would have closed the outer doors though since you were sneaking past the giants outside and would not want them to be alerted.

![]() |

I'll make an executive decision and say that Purs used it on Rhon since Amshegar still has his contingent breath of life and a better reflex. Hope that is enough to help you all survive the next round...
Rhon carves into the paralyzed crone queen as Exiel flies up behind him to grant him some resistance against the next onslaught. The axe cuts deep but the crone queen proves remarkably resilient, even when helpless.
Enraged by your impudence, the crone queens channel their icy hatred again, this time unleashing orbs of force that each explode in a massive radius, chilling you all to the bone.

1d20 ⇒ 3
The fourth crone queen remains bound by Exiel's spell.
Pathfinders each need to make 3 saves against the freezing spheres. This might get deadly. I believe the current hit points are:
Rhon: 94/185
Amsheagar:67/207 (did you roll your temp hp for heroes' feast?)
Exiel:102/102 (did you roll your temp hp for heroes' feast?)
Purs:62/112
Pathfinders are up if you survive this round.

GM, a little bit of creative thinking here. Did the spell that was cast have a projectile that had to fly to a destination before exploding (like a fireball)? If it did, and it flew close enough to me, would I have been able to use EFS to catch the orb in my EFS so that is explodes inside my EFS affecting only me?
Holding off on my action pending your decision since it will determine whether or not I need to dismiss that sphere on my turn.

think I'm dead. :(
Purs & Exiel I will allow Exiel's idea to catch one of the freezing spheres in his emergency force sphere on condition that he foregoes his save against that sphere (since he is locking himself in an enclosed space with an explosion). We're outside the strict operation of the rules on this one, so I'm exercising GM discretion. I trust that is ok since it will avoid some deaths.
The freezing sphere that was completely negated was sphere number 1d3 ⇒ 1.
As the freezing sphere from the Northernmost crone queen streaks past Exiel towards its intended point of detonation, the canny sorcerer calls up his emergency force sphere, trapping the projectile inside the dome of force, along with himself. The projectile strikes the inner wall of the dome, and immediately explodes and saturates the space within with rime and frost, leaving Exiel no opportunity for or possibility of evasion. The walls of the dome rattle as it strains to contain the icy blast, but it holds.
Meanwhile, the other pathfinders are affected by the other two freezing spheres as normal. Rhon partially evades one but catches the other on the full, while Purs partially avoids both. Rhon is surprised to find that although he has been warded by Exiel, the numbing cold is so great that the resistance is only partially effective.
Steeling himself against the ice and pain, Rhon heals himself as he swings at the paralyzed crone queen before him, finally hacking through her withered chest with his last swing. She explodes in a shower of ice and dust, falling to the ground as the blue glow in her eye sockets rapidly fade to black.
Rhon takes 24 cold damage from the first blast and 11 cold damage from the second blast, then heals himself for 35 damage for no net gain/loss of hp.
Purs takes 46 cold damage, and is conscious at 16hp.
Exiel takes 49 cold damage.
Pathfinders you have discovered that their ice spells partially ignore cold resistance!
Amshegar still needs to make 2 reflex saves.
Purs' dog still needs to make 2 reflex saves.
Exiel is trapped in his own force dome.
Amshegar, Exiel and Purs are still up for actions this turn.

Exiel dismisses his force sphere to partake of the healing channel, then flies up to the pair of undead former-queens to the left. He takes a deep breath as he prepares to intercept more projectiles, or otherwise present a more (deceptively) apparently vulnerable target for the enemy.
"Come on ya witches. Neither of you have actually hurt me. Or don't you want a piece of the one guy here with the strongest link to your dear grand-mammy Baba Yaga?"
I think I have the most number of Mantle of the Black Rider boons in the party?

![]() |

Purs' dog evades the icy blasts once more, but Amshegar does not fare as well and is frozen to his core. As his consciousness slips, he too feels his soul being tethered to this plane and drawn back to his body as Baba Yaga's dark magic courses through his body and knits his frozen-snapped sinews, flesh and bone back together.
Exiel dismisses his sphere just in time to receive some healing from Purs. As Purs asks whether the party should retreat, Amsheagar moves up to him to cast his communal resist cold spell, as if to indicate that they should fight on!
The crones consider their options, and ultimately decide on divide-and-conquer. One of the crones to the West raises her arms, holding aloft her icy staff as she raises an immense rampart of ice to cut Exiel and Rhon off from Amsheagar and Purs. The other 2 crones fire rays of intense cold at Rhon and Exiel.

The crones prove to be remarkably accurate with their aim and have no trouble hitting the paladins (unless Exiel uses his force sphere again).
Amsheagar takes 71 cold damage before he is able to cast his resistance spell. His contingent breath of life triggers, healing him for 55hp. He then heals 31hp from Purs' channel for a net gain of 15hp this turn. Current hp 82/207.
Purs heals 31 hp from his channel. Current hp 47/112
Rhon heals 31 hp, then takes 44 cold damage (net loss of 13hp), and 4 dexterity drain! Current hp 81/185.
Exiel heals 31hp, then takes 61 cold damage and 2 dexterity drain, but can block it with EFS. Current hp 84/102 if you use EFS, or 23/102 if you don't.
Pathfinders except Exiel have cold resist 30.

The crone queens continue to call upon powerful ice magics to confound the Pathfinders. One calls up a storm of ice and hail that envelops Exiel and Amsheagar. Another crone queen conjures yet another wall of ice to cut off Exiel and Rhon from their healers. The last one fires another polar ray at Rhon, seeing that he has no viable defence against rays.

Rhon continues to hold on just as stubbornly as any dwarf. He focuses himself to his cause and attacks the crone with a renewed vigor. He maintains his defensive stance while using both the strength of the living rock and Torag's forge fire to aid himself.

Exiel tanks the damage and hopes that Amsheagar is able to remove the new ice wall so that Rhon and himself can get some of Purs' healing.
Seeing that the witches are determined to give Rhon a hard time, Exiel casts Chains of Light on the witch next to Rhon and then calls out to Rhon more words of encouragement. If Amsheagar is able to remove the wall of ice, Exiel will also include Purs in the effect to further protect him from the onslaught of icy spells.

Amsheagar grumbles when he sees the new wall crop up.
"Annoying." Amsheagar mumbles as he sees the new wall.
"Well, Time to move with the flow. Don't resist the pit." he tells Pur as he creates a Roaming Pit only 10 feet deep.
He uses a move action to move the pit, and them attached, 20 feet towards Rhon, just under the ice wall.

As the Pathfinders are pounded by the icy storm and separated by yet another wall of ice, Amsheagar comes up with a creative solution to circumvent the obstacle, calling upon the very earth beneath him to bend to his will and transport both himself and Purs beneath the icy wall so that they can come to the aid of their allies. Purs channels positive energy once more, healing the party.
Exiel continues to perform his role as arcane spellcaster, bolstering the party's morale as he tries to bind Rhon's opponent with magical chains of light.
Much to the crone queen's chagrin, she fails to avoid the chains, and becomes easy prey for Rhon's axe, though her unnatural constitution keeps her undead form intact for the time being.
The other 2 crone queens advance towards Exiel, but are not quite able to reach him yet. Glowering with ill intent, they call down more ice and hail upon the Pathfinders, this time managing to catch all of you in their dual-ice-storm!

Meanwhile, the crone queen held by Exiel's spell tries to break free, and gets very very close... but the sorcerer's spell manages to hold her for now.
Pathfinders each heal 38 damage, then Rhon, Exiel and Pursp gain temp hp from Exiel's imitation-bard-song. Then all of you take 25 bludgeoning damage. You each also take 5 points of cold damage which bypasses your resistance, except Exiel who takes another 11 cold damage instead.
Pathfinders are up! You are all also currently in difficult terrain due to the ice storms.
I'm a little swarmed by work at the moment, will post an update on your hp later. But I'm sure none of you are in danger of dying at the moment.

Exiel sees that the party is finally back in close proximity to each other and takes the opportunity to cast haste on the entire party. With his swift action, he goes into crane style stance to prepare for melee battle. He also takes the opportunity to fly back a little ways just in case Amsheagar has plans to charge at the approaching witches.
Haste is up guys!

"Blasted cold! Bah." Rhon spits and sees it instantly freeze on contact with the ground. This crone must die now. He maintains his defensive stance while using both the strength of the living rock and Torag's forge fire to aid himself. Rhon whirls his ax and brings is crashing down on the former queen (green) with as much power as he can muster.

Purs the conditions of their physical bodies do not seem viable for sustaining biological life.
Rhon hews into the hapless undead former-queen, but her cold flesh seems oddly resilient to even his holy weapon. Perhaps there is some other condition for bypassing their resistance?
Exiel pulls back to hasten the party while Amsheagar changes his shape into a huge ancient beast. Purs channels positive energy to bolster his friends for the anticipated melee.

Amsheagar where are you getting damage reduction from and which damage resistance are you hoping to stack it with? I don't think damage reduction is a technical game term, so they may both be damage resistance (not stacking)?
Please also check your location. It looks like you may have wandered into the AoE of your own hungry earth spell? If you move there you may need make a roll a grapple check for your spell against yourself.
Rhon and Purs are still up.

Double check the area, I will have to move north and attack the Green foe instead.
The Damage Reduction comes from the Celestial Template from my Planar shift.
Defensive Abilities The creature gains damage reduction and energy resistance as noted on Table: Celestial Creature Defense.

![]() |

Sorry, the correct term for the ability is damage reduction. I don't think there is technically an ability called damage resistance, and any reference to damage resistance most likely refers to damage reduction. So if an attack against you does cold damage and physical damage, your cold resistance will apply to the cold damage and your damage reduction will apply to the physical damage.
