Seeing the hobgoblin go for some kind of vial, Ira's face twitches and he lashes out with his sword, patience expended.

"What did I just say?" He snaps at the unfortunate.

Venture Lieutenant, Play by Post (online)

The hobgoblin goes down under Ira's sword. The shopkeeper, Vane Oreld, flinches and begins to beg for your aid. "Please help me. This javelin wound in my gut is about to end me. I can't even make it over to the shelf to get one of my remedies."

Female Lizardwoman NG Medium Female Lizardfolk 7th level cleric of Gozreh/1st level Skald

Valasca mutters a few words of prayer to Gozreh under her breath as she presents the symbol of a Dripping leaf.

Korvak will help Vane draw the javelin from the wound and help him back to his feet.

"Friend Vane, gather what you can, we have other villagers outside and we are doing a quick sweep of the village and then hopefully getting out from this attack, is there anything useful we can grab from the shop?"

Lillie goes back to the door and keeps an eye on the street, making sure that we are not surprised by a hobgoblin patrol.

Perception (+2 vs goblinoids): 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 2 = 9

"Related, is there anyone else hidden here, or do you know if anyone is hiding nearby?" Arcavic asked Vane. He'd always rather liked Vane, as he could sell his alchemical concoctions through the man and make a small but decent living.

Venture Lieutenant, Play by Post (online)

"Thank you for the aid." Oreld tells you. "I hid some townsfolk in the cellar, together with food and supplies. I also trapped the doorway to the back room to keep them safe."

Arcavic nods as Oreld tells him. "Very good. I am not particularly skilled with traps. Could you please assist me in disarming it so we can get the people to safety?"

Valasca does a quick search of the Hob and the room in general for anything of particular use casting detect magic

While she's rummaging about.

We'll cover you to the tree line then I'll need you to get the villagers to my camp which is to the West and slightly south of the village on the edge of a small orchard. Take this Goblin's weapon

Male Wyvaran Slayer 2 | HP 17/19 | F +4 R +6 W +1 | AC 18 T 13 FF 15 CMD 18 | Init: +3 Perception: +6 Fly: +10

Ira kicks the dead hobgoblin. "I gave you a bloody chance, you can't say I didn't," he muttered mostly to himself. He seems irritated about the situation and spends a minute informing the corpse of what an idiot it was for making him kill it, then turns to set about the business of looting the shop for their more righteous cause.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

Korvak will help gather and then help Vane get to the people downstairs and carry help what/who is needed.

Venture Lieutenant, Play by Post (online)

Oreld touches a hidden area on one of the shelves, and tells you the trap is disarmed. Those of you who go with him find a workroom (which appears to double as a clinic) and a small, neat bedroom. He leads you down into the cellar, where you find three villagers hidden. You also get 7 provision points worth of food and drink.

For those who are searching the shop, you find some unspoiled alchemical supplies, which Oreld insists come with so he can use, and 3 vials of antiplague, five bottles of bloodblock, a bottle of fire ward gel, and two flasks of defoliant. The hobgoblin was carrying food (3 provision points), 16gp, 2 potions of cure light wounds, a potion (unknown), alchemist's fire, antitoxin, oil(5), smokestick(2), tanglefoot bag(3), and thunderstone (2), in addition to his normal combat gear. You also find notes about an explosive 'stump remover' Oreld is developing.

Don't worry about any gear you don't want to use. I have a house rule that gives you gear at level up, so only worry about things you want to carry now, provision points, and followers.

Male Skinwalker (Coldborn) Barbarian (Invulnerable Rager) 1

"What's this 'stump remover' you're working on, sir?" Cnut says, curiosity piqued when he runs across the notes.

Venture Lieutenant, Play by Post (online)

"It's an explosive designed to be used to remove tree stumps from fields. Unfortunately, it's too strong for that use. I still have a few batches I've made, but I don't know what it could be used for."

Male Wyvaran Slayer 2 | HP 17/19 | F +4 R +6 W +1 | AC 18 T 13 FF 15 CMD 18 | Init: +3 Perception: +6 Fly: +10

Ira goggled at the man, "Don't know indeed. Reckon our dead friend knew just fine."

Male Skinwalker (Coldborn) Barbarian (Invulnerable Rager) 1

"Maybe we could bring down a building on some of the hobs, if we can catch a group inside? Is it that strong? It could definitely come in handy, regardless."

M Half-Orc Monk 1 (MOMS), HP:13/13|AC:16|T:15|FF:10|CMB+4|CMD:16|Fort:+4|Ref:+4|Will:+5|Init:+2|Perc: +7| Stunning Fist 1/1 SPD: 30 foot;

Korvak will take as much of the alchemical stuff as he can, using any cloth and such to pad his page.. as it all seems very useful.

After we have got this stump remover thingie.. it sounds useful..

"We have one last place to investigate for gear and survivors and then we should probably make our ways out of the village. To the trading post"

"Actually, we need to collapse the bridge to delay the hobgoblins from pursuing us. Perhaps Oreld's stump remover wold be powerful enough for us to take the bridge out? Regardless, we should take it with us so we can deny the hobgoblins its use."

Arcavic's eyes glow as he scans the unknown potion, seeking to read the magical auras it creates.

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

"that 'stump remover' is safe to transport? It won't spontaneously go boom? asks Lillie with worry and excitement in her voice "just how strong is that stuff and could it be applied to an arrow "

Venture Lieutenant, Play by Post (online)

Arcavic, the potion is invisibility.

"It can be moved as long as you're careful. One use is about the amount a generous mug of beer holds. It would probably do a good job with the bridge."

M Half-Orc Monk 1 (MOMS), HP:13/13|AC:16|T:15|FF:10|CMB+4|CMD:16|Fort:+4|Ref:+4|Will:+5|Init:+2|Perc: +7| Stunning Fist 1/1 SPD: 30 foot;

"Well friend Vane, your the most qualified, howabout we get you to hold it until we need to cross the bridge..

Venture Lieutenant, Play by Post (online)

Are you sending this group ahead to meet you at Valasca's camp, or keeping them with you? Also, Valasca, which side of the bridge is your camp on? Is everyone ready to move on to the final location in town?

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32

I was picturing far side of bridge near a fruit tree or two. We're talking a lean-to next to a fire pit and a nice tent.

I think we're ready to move on to the final location. I haven't seen this as being a slog at all.

M Half-Orc Monk 1 (MOMS), HP:13/13|AC:16|T:15|FF:10|CMB+4|CMD:16|Fort:+4|Ref:+4|Will:+5|Init:+2|Perc: +7| Stunning Fist 1/1 SPD: 30 foot;

This has been reasonably smoothly run, maybe even cut-down a little.. but well done.

Female Lizardwoman NG Medium Female Lizardfolk 7th level cleric of Gozreh/1st level Skald

If the store is on the way I'd say we'll cover the group and sort fo stick with them, if it's not and there's a treeline we can escort them to and have them circle around we'll do that and have the Alchemist set up to blow the bridge.

I'm back on..

Venture Lieutenant, Play by Post (online)

I can only get on the website on my phone, so I can't do a big post that moves the story forward. I will keep checking on the website from my computer.

Same issue, no worries. I got on in the afternoon EST yesterday on a Mac at work. Maybe you'll have luck later today?

Venture Lieutenant, Play by Post (online)

You move on to the trading company. There are three hobgoblins in the yard, and the building is on fire. the red diamond on the map shows the area where the roof has caught fire. The doors are all tightly shut, perhaps barricaded by people taking refuge. There is no sign they are aware of the fire.

initiative rolls:

Cnut init: 1d20 ⇒ 6
Lillie init: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Arcavik init: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Valeska init: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Korvak init: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Ira init: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
enemy init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

You may all act before the hobgoblins.

Sighting a pair of hobgoblins standing together, Arcavic grinned and cast a spell to create a pool of grease beneath them, hopefully causing them to fall.

Casting grease on the two standing close together lower on the map. DC 15 Reflex saves or they fall prone. They must succeed at a DC 10 Acrobatics check to move in the grease.

M Half-Orc Monk 1 (MOMS), HP:13/13|AC:16|T:15|FF:10|CMB+4|CMD:16|Fort:+4|Ref:+4|Will:+5|Init:+2|Perc: +7| Stunning Fist 1/1 SPD: 30 foot;

Korvak moves to the non-greased hobgoblin... and attempts to kick him

"I'll keep him busy, someone tell those inside of the fire."

Valasca swift action enlarges(I have 4 rounds left after this one) and walks up to the edge of the grease spell and uses her spear on the hopefully fallen hobs. Since grease is a 10ft radius and my reach enlarged with a longspear is 15' this should work.

spear stab: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 192d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 5) + 6 = 17 If one of the Hobs in the grease is on their feet I'll stab that one first, as only I and Lillie can target them inside the grease.

With the demeanor of an executioner, Valasca enlarges and grimly stabs down with her spear with deadly force.
"Best to do this quickly before that fire spreads.

hobgoblin reflex save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
hobgoblin reflex save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

Both hobgoblins fall prone in the puddle of grease. Valasca's spear strikes one, hurting it very badly. Korvak swings his fist at the hobgoblin not in the grease, but his fist passes by the side of the hobgoblin's head.

I've added the greased area to the map. It's the lime green rectangle.

Female Lizardwoman NG Medium Female Lizardfolk 7th level cleric of Gozreh/1st level Skald

Adjusted for Valasca's present size and position on map.

Male Skinwalker (Coldborn) Barbarian (Invulnerable Rager) 1

Cnut moves up next to the grease spot and attacks the still-standing hobgoblin.

Attack: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 2 = 6
Damage: 1d10 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 7 + 2 = 14

However, putting a foot in the grease, he slips and misses his attack.

Lillie moves closer, takes aim and shoots at the prone and injured hobgoblin, hoping to finish it off

attack vs prone: 1d20 + 6 + 2 - 4 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 2 - 4 + 1 = 11
damage: 1d8 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 1 + 2 = 10

Male Wyvaran Slayer 2 | HP 17/19 | F +4 R +6 W +1 | AC 18 T 13 FF 15 CMD 18 | Init: +3 Perception: +6 Fly: +10

Are any of you wearing a cloak? I'm going to fly up there and beat at the flames to try and put them out, a cloak would help.

Venture Lieutenant, Play by Post (online)

One of the hobgoblins in the grease is dead from Lillie's arrow.

Waiting on Ira's action, but I think he's wanting input from you guys first.

M Half-Orc Monk 1 (MOMS), HP:13/13|AC:16|T:15|FF:10|CMB+4|CMD:16|Fort:+4|Ref:+4|Will:+5|Init:+2|Perc: +7| Stunning Fist 1/1 SPD: 30 foot;

Korvak has a cloak, if you mention something he'll gladly hold it up

Male Wyvaran Slayer 2 | HP 17/19 | F +4 R +6 W +1 | AC 18 T 13 FF 15 CMD 18 | Init: +3 Perception: +6 Fly: +10

"Bugbear! Your cloak!" Ira shouts, spreading his wings and taking off from the ground with a powerful swing of them. Grabbing Korvak's cloak, he pumps his wings and darts up toward the roof. Landing next to the crackling flames and the reptilian figure begins beating at them, trying to slow or extinguish as much as possible.

Moved on the map.

Venture Lieutenant, Play by Post (online)

Ira, I like your idea, so I'm going to say that you succeed in keeping the flames from spreading every round you keep this up. You notice that you are not able to shrink the flames, and think that water is needed to put it out. There is water in the animal trough on the map.

The hobgoblin in the grease tries to get up.
acrobatics check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
He gets up, triggering an AoO from Valasca and Cnut.

The non-greasy hobgoblin swings a longsword at Korvac.
attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
He finds that his balance is off, and almost drops his sword.

Party is up again.

Arcavic stomps on the ground again, sending a Tremor towards the uncreased hobgoblin in an attempt to knock him to the ground for Korvak.

Tremor: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

attack of opportunity: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 42d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 3) + 6 = 10

stabbing firmly the air 5 feet to his left.

With a frustrated growl Valasca stabs again,

attack on turn: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 182d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 2) + 6 = 14

The hobgoblin rocks on his feet from the tremor, but remains upright.

Male Wyvaran Slayer 2 | HP 17/19 | F +4 R +6 W +1 | AC 18 T 13 FF 15 CMD 18 | Init: +3 Perception: +6 Fly: +10

Ira leaps down, casting his shadow over the brawl as a couple of sweeps from his wings drop him just within reach of the trough. Hoping to whatever gods would pay him any heed that Korvak's cloak would be waterproofed enough for this to work, he dunks the cloak into the water and grabs the four corners, trying to use it as a leaky if temporarily serviceable bucket.

Moved on the map.
