The doors swing open and a dagger of force dances in front of Beleg poking at his defenses but failing to penetrate his armor.
Whatever purpose this vaulted, brick-lined chamber may have once served, today it is obviously the inner sanctum of some depraved cult. Unnerving, spiky runes have been painted on the brick walls with blood, between which dozens of mutilated birds—gulls, falcons, ravens, and a particularly large number of doves—have been impaled. The foul stink of rotting meat emanates from these grisly trophies.
Opposite the only visible entrance, a jagged boulder with a bloodstained cloth draped over it serves as an altar, several fly-covered, foul-smelling lumps of meat siting atop it. The wall just beyond the altar has been painted to depict a single curved white feather sitting in a pool of blood.
To either side of this symbol yawn archways set with barred doors, turning the alcoves beyond into prison cells. The southern cell’s door hangs ajar but the northern cell appears locked.
Behind the altar is the assassin from before. She appears to be snacking on a bit of flesh from the altar in front of her.
In the northern cell is a young, overweight man in tattered over-sized robes in Sarenrae's colors. He screams, his broken voice betraying his desperation "Thank the Dawnflower somebody is here! I've been here for weeks!"
The Assassin grins evilly, dagger in hand.

Sorry you had an emergency, but glad all is ok.

Beleg moves into the fog and casts shield on himself.
Mashita cuts a big chunk off the assassin's cloak, missing her unfortunately.
You can't execute an attack of opportunity against an opponent with total concealment, even if you know what square or squares the opponent occupies.
I don't see any rule prevent AoOs with normal concealment. Let me know if I'm missing something.
Kohaki moves up behind Maps who promptly runs up, vaulting the alter and grabbing at the assassin. She gives him a nasty gash in the arm for 9 which almost makes Maps loose his grip, but he manages to hold on.
The captured priest encourages Mashita. "Bring that foul woman the swift justice of Sarenrae's scimitar!"

Pirate, you are correct. Only full concealment prevents AoOs. However, I think the assassin still missed (For the AoO Maps AC was 29 - now that he's grappling it drops to 27, but the assassin suffers a -2 penalty to hit).

If your AC is 29 then miss and don't take the damage. I've got this bad habit of just looking at PCs stat bars and assuming they've updated them with buffs.

I think I only need to make 1 check (with a +5 bonus) to pin. Grappling has always confused me so I posted the rules below.
Pirate GM |
Luckily grappling is one of the things I'm more familiar with. You are correct that it's one check with the bonus +5 to maintain and achieve one of the extra results. In this case pin.
After being pummeled, pinned and proned the assassin goes down.
What's the plan? Kill, maim capture?
Mashita Nagamori |
Does anyone know who or what Shax is? She called that out just before the Obscuring Mist?
Do we see any keys on her, for the cell with the priest?
We were tasked with ending the murders in this section of the city and bringing the murderer to justice. I am for capture.
Pirate GM |
The holy symbol was recognized at the beginning as well as some details regarding the demon lord Shax.
Here is a good link for more info.
She does have several keys on her, one for the northern cell, one for the southern and one for the for up top that you guys picked.
Pirate GM |
From the overweight priest.
"Thank Sarenrae! Can we get out of here before the rest of the cult shows up?"
For cinematic purposes the fog will fade.
Maps |
Maps doesn't shy away from killing when it needs to be done, but he knows there is a line between self-defense and murder and does not willingly cross it, even with assassins. Once she goes down, he tends her wounds, searches her thoroughly, and if she doesn't bleed to death, ties her up tight.
He also spends a few moments searching the area, including both cells.
Looking to the overweight priest, he says, "Tell us what you know."

Mashita easily finds the keys to let the priest out.
The priest answers Maps question as he exits his cell
"More then I wish I did. That foul half-Elf kidnapped me a few weeks ago. Been coming back every few days with what looks to be living hearts to me. Said she was saving me for list. She's got some cultists she's been gathering. At first just a few, but their numbers have been growing. I haven't been able to pray for spells down here for weeks, but my father used to say I was good with a blade if somebody's got a spare. Either way I'd like to get out of here, see the sun again. Once we're somewhere safe I'll tell you all I can remember about the cultists."
Kohaki |
Kohaki agreed with Maps behavior when he tied up the assassin.
We must get out of here and call the authorities about this sect. They will take care of our prisonner and justice will be done.
Then he asked the emprisonned cleric
Do you need anything ? Water, food, heal ? I don't have any weapon on me I'm sorry.
Kohaki will help as much as he can the imprisonned man.
Pirate GM |
"MMmm, a bowl of chowder from the Steamed Clam, that would be delicious."
The man's thoughts seem lost in thought for a moment, almost as if he were imagining a delicious bowl of soup.
Mashita Nagamori |
As the cells are searched, the priest checked on and conversed with by others, Mashita clears the altar has best he can of any signs of Shax.
After completing the task, Mashita says to the priest, "Once we have taken this murdered back to the city guard and reported on her cult, we will escort you to the other Sarenites in the city so you can explain to them what has occured."

Maps puts a hand out to stop the priest from getting too far. In the wastes a blooming plant was always treated with caution. Few things survived in that deadly place and many that did could be just as deadly. And so Maps takes a ment to pat down the fatman for anything suspicious.
