Indeed!
May your turkey be juicy, and your potatoes buttery.

Slight Update: I'll be back to full-time posting schedule on Thursday afternoon (due to wet weather tomorrow and the need to catch up with some things at home that I let slide over the past couple of weeks).
GM Piratey Steve
Hey! Looks like the gang's all here!
Thanks for hanging in over the past couple weeks. I think the stone must've disintegrated, cuz all I passed was a tiny red grain Sunday night, without any pain. I'm feeling much better and am ready to GM on a more full-time basis again.

Yay! That's awesome news, glad things happened painlessly, and you're starting to feel better. :)

* * * DAY OFF ALERT * * *
A little advanced notice: I likely won't be around to post on Thursday (12/15) due to a full schedule of real-life errands.
GM Piratey Steve
Waiting for you guys to finalize plans/actions. Will check back tomorrow and try to push things forward a bit before my day off.
GM Piratey Steve
Busy week for everyone, it looks like.
i've moved my marker on the battle map to where i'd like to try to sneak to.
Yeah, holiday madness seems to be beginning to kick into high gear. I figured I'd be wiped out from all the stuff I did yesterday but woke up strangely refreshed this morning (I think the brutal cold is contributing as well). I'm not going to push you guys too much (yet!), as this is a fairly dangerous and challenging encounter.

Out of curiosity, what would the penalty for shooting with eyes closed be? These first few shots will probably be more to get attention than to do damage
Here are some rules about dealing with gaze attacks:
Averting Eyes: The opponent avoids looking at the creature’s face, instead looking at its body, watching its shadow, tracking it in a reflective surface, etc. Each round, the opponent has a 50% chance to avoid having to make a saving throw against the gaze attack. The creature with the gaze attack, however, gains concealment against that opponent.
Wearing a Blindfold: The foe cannot see the creature at all (also possible to achieve by turning one's back on the creature or shutting one's eyes). The creature with the gaze attack gains total concealment against the opponent.
And some other consequences of wearing a blindfold/closing one's eyes:
Blinded Condition:
The creature cannot see. It takes a –2 penalty to Armor Class, loses its Dexterity bonus to AC (if any), and takes a –4 penalty on most Strength- and Dexterity-based skill checks and on opposed Perception skill checks. All checks and activities that rely on vision (such as reading and Perception checks based on sight) automatically fail. All opponents are considered to have total concealment (50% miss chance) against the blinded character. Blind creatures must make a DC 10 Acrobatics skill check to move faster than half speed. Creatures that fail this check fall prone. Characters who remain blinded for a long time grow accustomed to these drawbacks and can overcome some of them.

Looks like averting the eyes is our best bet then, or at least gives us the greatest chance of success while somewhat minimizing the chances of harm.

I hate real life issues. They are so much less fun to deal with than in game issues. :(

Wow...didn't realize I'd gone a whole week without posting to the Gameplay Thread. My apologies.
From the other games I'm playing in on these boards, I'm noticing a serious slowdown in both GM and player posting rates. I'm guessing that's to be expected and probably a normal thing with the extra commitments this time of year. Should we relax posting expectations over the next couple of weeks? Or maybe even schedule a brief hiatus?
I'll still be checking in almost everyday to ensure that I get my much-needed walking exercise, but I might not stay at the library as long, especially if we decide on a slowdown/hiatus.
Let me know your thoughts on this matter.
Aghon
A hiatus seems in order considering that the "radio silence" seems to be on the increase. Perhaps we should just say "see you in 2017!"? Maybe look to start up in earnest again the week after New Year's?
Jarvis X. Crookrows
I'm fine with either. Jarvis has been quiet of late, though not through any specific reason to become less active. He just hasn't had any hankering to jump one way or the other.

I'll try to post a bit each day for the rest of this week to see if we can get the island hunt over and done with (what was supposed to be a Halloweeny side trek looks like it might carry into the New Year!). Then we'll see about a nice week or so off (maybe 12/24 - 1/2/17?).
GM Piratey Steve
* * * HOLIDAY HIATUS! * * *
Rather than try to do a slow crawl over the next week + (during which I'll likely be unable to post on Sundays & Mondays), let's take a break.
Then, on Tuesday, 1/3/17, I'll open a new post with an awful pun ("Haggy New Year" most likely) and we'll try to hit the ground running, deal with the Badger-Hag, and get back to the joys of crewing aboard the Wormwood.
Happy Holidays to you all, and to your friends and families!
GM Piratey Steve
Well I'll be.... It's the 1-year anniversary of this game! I just want to take a moment to say thanks to you dedicated players who made this possible.
I'd also like to ask Jordan and Vincent what their characters are doing just so I'll be able to hit the ground running when we start back up on Tuesday, 1/3/17.
Jordan: With the Badger-Hag turning her attention toward Jack Scrimshaw, will you be taking a shot at her or perhaps performing some other action?
Vincent: Are you using Stealth (Taking 10? Half or full speed?) to move toward the hag or just marching through the jungle at full speed?
And allow me to wish you all a Happy New Year while it's fresh in my mind!
Jarvis X. Crookrows
Holy crow, it has been a year, hasn't it? Wow. I'm looking forward to watching more faces meet Mr. Oary.
Aghon
Happy New Year to all! May 2017 be a blessed year for everyone.
GM Piratey Steve
Sorry for the unexpected delay. An unforeseen occurrence and general bad weather sidetracked me yesterday, but I'm back now.
The undergrowth in the jungle makes for difficult terrain, halving your movement rates and making running impossible. Unless I hear otherwise, I'll be assuming double moves to close on the hag. Culder and Aghon have fast movement speeds (40 ft.) while Vincent is normal (30 ft.) and Jarvis is slow (20 ft.), so you'll likely arrive at the beach at slightly different times.
@Aghon: Do you want to use your Agile feet ability to reach the beach faster or just move at regular or slower speed?
Aghon
Uhhhh... I don't want to get there before everybody else, so I'll forgo the use of that ability at present. Thanks for asking!
GM Piratey Steve
* * * LULL ALERT! * * *
Slight lull sighted on the horizon, as my library will be closed both Sunday and Monday (MLK holiday).
Culder 'the Captain' Hargraves
1 person marked this as a favorite.
I don't want to derail the game...
Culder is sick of all the politics/middle school drama on the ship (especially since it makes the crew weak once they're finally in combat with another vessel). He's not looking for anyone to commit to mutiny or even to give him any authority at all- he just wants assurances that the antagonism (picking fights, tattling, lying/undercutting) is over. If they are unwilling to make a truce (or unable to bluff Jordan about wanting a truce) than his preference is to kill them here so that there's less people working against them on board.
I'm aware that there's a risk I could die (especially given how tentative some of my comrades are) but if Culder goes out in a flurry of sand and blood I'm not going to feel even a little bad about that. If you need them alive for something, though, just have Culder pass out from some poison he didn't realize the gravedigger got him with or something.
Aghon
I'll second that emotion. Aghon would rather kill a few here, and try and talk his way out of getting killed (that's what bluff checks are for, right?) while back on the boat, than go back to things just they way they have been.
Culder 'the Captain' Hargraves
That was the sense I was getting too... I'm concerned though that if/when we kill Aretta right now that'll sour Syl on a truce so we'll have to kill her which will be too much for Maheem...
Vincent Cahaihnes
I figured that aretta is the co-worker that you really hate and want to take outside and fistfight in the office break-room, but you'll get fired from doing that, or in this case we'll probably be killed.
best to just wait her out and let the boss man fire her, or quite the ship the first chance we get. either way, right now in particular, I don't think we would get out of this if we killed aretta. she's a pest that we just have to deal with. but three of use (jordan, vincent and jarvis) can play the politics game really well and as many lies as she tells about us, we can spread 3 times the lies about her. It also really doesn't help that she's old crew and we're fresh meat, she'll always have seniority over us
Jarvis X. Crookrows
That's exactly it. Bossman won't really fire her, especially if she's up there spinning some BS story to him about how she's the best pirate and we're trash. We need her to recognize that she can't get away with this shenaniganry. And really, aside from Syl and Maheem, the majority of the folks here are on our side in spades. How hard would it be that "the hag got her", if we could get the other two to go along.
Vincent Cahaihnes
This is just a thought to probably use at a later date, but we are just as good as she is at spreading rumors, as I've already said before. what if we spread rumors about other people, but say we heard it from her? basically say a little something about everyone but make it seem like Areatta started the rumor?
Jarvis X. Crookrows
It's certainly a thought. If she continues being a prig, and we can't get them to commit to an end of hostilities and crappy behavior, we may have to work on that side of things over the next few days/weeks aboard ship.
Culder 'the Captain' Hargraves
I'm sorry, I know this is bad timing with Culder at the center of everything that's going on right now but my wife's grandfather just died and my ability to post is going to be severely limited for the next few days. Culder will abide by whatever decision the rest of the party comes to- please feel free to bot him as necessary.
Jarvis X. Crookrows
IMO, we've delayed for less momentous reasons. Go do what you need to do. My thoughts and condolences to you and yours Culder.
GM Piratey Steve
Condolences, Culder. We can take a few days off if needed.
I'm going to post Maheem's reaction to Jordan's latest post as well, though. You guys seem to have a pretty good feel for how ship politics/alliances are currently (though I'll admit I also wish I'd seen some pondering about what comes next if you guys kill Maheem, Syl, and Aretta).
I'll make a post now and then see where things stand tomorrow; then we'll decide if we need/want a break until Culder's back.
Aghon
My condolences as well Cap'n. As to what's happening on the isle, Aghon seems to have put them in a bit of a pickle. He can't heal Aretta's scurvy... I don't have remove disease yet... Depending on the GM's interpretation of healing, I could probably put her teeth back in her head, temporarily, with some channeled energy, but without access to a wand or scroll of remove disease, I'm not going to be able to do anything about her scurvy.
Edit: Also, Aghon would much prefer she were just dead. She's an unholy b!tch.
Jordan Bain
Sorry for your loss, Culder. Don't worry about the game, take care of your family first.
I was actually thinking a lot about the effects of killing Maheem, Syl, and Aretta. I think we really lost our golden opportunity to knock of Aretta in the interval before Maheem and Syl arrived. Vincent and I were also discussing this off the boards a little bit.
What I'd like to try and do now is see if we can get Maheem and Syl to take everyone but Aretta and someone with a really good bluff skill. Or if Maheem will agree to let Aghon and Aretta settle their differences on ths island. My main concern was we do it and we don't make the bluff checks needed to keep it under wraps. the dice are fickle.
@Aghon: To be clear though, putting scurvy on Aretta isn't something you told the rest of us about IC, did you? If so, this is the first time I'm really hearing about it.
Aghon
No, Aghon didn't tell anyone, and the act of giving it to her was one of the more surreptitious things he's done while aboard. I suppose he could lie about it and say that he never did anything to her, but that is going to require an untrained bluff check, and, as you said, dice are fickle. Might be better if he just avoided it, and said something like: "You think I would do something like that?" Because it is not a lie, and therefore requires no bluff check... Obviously how the NPCs react to such a question could make things ugly fast though...
