From your vantage point, you can guess with extreme certainty that the massive golden sphere in the chamber beyond is some kind of powerful magical device. The exact properties of such a device are beyond you for the moment, until you have a chance to properly identify the properties of the device using Spellcraft and detect magic.

Perception (Ezren):
You do not notice any immediate traps or hazards that stick out to you, beyond the obviously magical flaming golden sphere and the unknowns that it represents. You hear the sounds of giants trying to be quiet in the chamber, off around to the right from the doorway out of line of sight. You can guess there might be about three of them that you are aware of, probably either a cloud or a storm giant based on the volume of the noises you are hearing.

The cloud giant nearest to the duo lets out a shout as it hurls a rock at the dinosaur...

...which splooshes into the watery protections that surround the druid. Meanwhile, the other two giants cause foggy clouds to erupt around the duo and back in the Pagoda room; concealing the giants from immediate sight.

Sharton activates his greater invisibility as a swift action and plunges into the fog. He double move flies to the far side, moving to about 30 feet up assuming the ceiling in this giant-sized building allows it, and does a quick glance around. On the next round he'll probably cast arcane sight to analyze the sphere, unless the battle requires his attention (which seems unlikely if there are only three giants).

Ezren, I still have you on the map in the Pagoda chamber outside the room; the golden sphere is more than 60 feet away from you for detect magic to catch it. Did you want to adjust your position?

The ceiling here actually towers close to 100 feet, so mobility is certainly not a problem. Will describe what you are able to perceive following clarifying Ezren's movement and Grognar's actions.

Sorry, Grognar is going to move just out of the cloud north after casting righteous might. He is moving toward d -10 if he does not have the movement he will use the boots of haste.


Grognar emerges at the edge of the fog cloud to notice that following their cloud cover, two of the giants had adjusted their positions slightly and are a bit closer than before.

Perception (Sharton):
You notice no particular traps in your visual range, though you do believe you hear noises of another creature from the northwestern portion of the room; concealed from your current line of sight behind the towering golden sphere in front of you.

Detect Magic (Ezren):
When you turn on your detect magic to evaluate the golden sphere, you are almost immediately blinded by overpowering presence of intense magic in front of you; to the point that were you not such a powerful wizard, the overwhelming magic that feeds back through the detect spell would most likely knock a lesser mage unconscious. Two further rounds are required to gain complete information for identification of this sphere's properties, but the first round is certainly enough to tell you that this massive sphere is a major artifact in its own right.

Around the western corner of the stairs leading up to the globe, a huge sized lamia strides confidently into view. She wields a wicked looking dagger, as do the eight duplicates of her that move eerily in unison around her, while streams of ghost-like entities swirl about her on an unseen breeze. "Your quest ends here, fools. You will never reach my master! Die!" the lamia almost screams the last part as she points a finely manicured finger in the direction of Ezren, causing a hazy field of purple energy to start manifest around the wizard!

Barring any particular interventions, would need a DC 24 Fortitude save from Ezren; failing would result in 140 points of damage, saving would result in 10d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 6, 6, 6, 4, 4, 4, 5, 4) = 50 damage instead.

This is what emergency force sphere is for..., and that is a darn good 10d6 roll,. What are the odds on not rolling below a 4 10 times? That is less than 1 in 1000!

With a quick word Ezren conjures a sphere of force around him as he studies the huge sized lamia and mouths I think not.

The burgeoning deadly magic dissipates harmlessly against the side of Ezren's force sphere, much to the lamia's annoyance.

You believe this creature is pretty much the same as the previous lamia matriarchs you fought earlier, though you are not quite sure why this one is huge sized and are not familiar with any additional new information. It is likely she has class levels, based upon the spell she just threw at you.

Jebediah's assault only lands his two talon attacks, dealing sizable gashes upon the giant's body.

Shump, on my last map image I have your position at UR J-8; which puts you 100 feet away from the lamia. Currently, I show you at 20 foot move speed plus the 30 from Fervor. You would have to double move if you want to reach her. Let me know if you do something else instead.

The cloud giants look uncertainly at the dinosaur of death that pounced forward as they heft their huge morningstars. "The beast is a lost cause until I remove his protections. Attack the large half-orc first!" the lamia calls out to them. The giants shift their attention to Grognar, adjust forward a bit, and attack; while the one in the back maneuvers around for a better position to throw at rock at the half-orc. After their attacks, only one giant manages to slip a strike past Grognar's defenses.

Taking a chance, Exren dimensionally shifts out of the sphere to appear next to Shump, Casts and delivers Displacement on the paladin and then flies back into the mist and behind the shpere.

Your Knowledge Local check will result in the same info as the spoiler I provided above for Ezren. The only difference is that you have a slight certainty that most lamias do not possess the ability to see through fog clouds. Perhaps a Sense Motive check is in order?

Taking a chance, Exren dimensionally shifts out of the sphere to appear next to Shump, Casts and delivers Displacement on the paladin and then flies back into the mist and behind the shpere.

The lamia does have 15 foot reach; being within touch range of Shump would also place you within her threatened area, flying back would provoke.

As the wizard begins to move away from Shump, the lamia lunges forward with one of her hands; lightly nudging Ezren on the back of his shoulder and draining away some of his willpower as she does so. She disdainfully snaps her fingers in Shump's direction, and artfully rips the displacement effect off of Shump. Not skipping a beat, the lamia then makes an assault of her own; weaving in and out with her dagger and claws in an almost dance-like fashion to attack the half-orc before her. After landing a strike with her dagger and two claw attacks, she spots an opening and forcefully touches Shump in the middle of his forehead; significantly draining away most of his willpower!

Barring any particular interventions: Ezren takes 3 points of WIS drain from the AoO, Shump takes 37 damage from three attacks and 14 points of WIS drain from the critical touch attack.

Is the Sr check for dispel magic? Dispel is Sr no unless there is something special I'm missing.

I'm not seeing displacement percential rolls for attacks on Shrump. But that could be on purpose.

If the touch attack crit still hits I think falls in to serious ally crits and Grognar with misfortune it if you will let him.


Hmmm, I did miss dispel magic bypassing SR. That would confirm Sharton dispelling the mirror image. I did not make the displacement rolls for a reason, which can be explained in the spoiler below. Finally, Misfortune has a 30 foot range; Shump is too far away for you to be able to use that ability on the lamia's critical hit.

Spellcraft (DC 22):
The lamia's appeared to cast a quickened dispel magic when she snapped her fingers at Shump, dispelling his displacement effect.

Jeb hits with two talon attacks and a bite, the combo being more than enough to fell his target!

That would bring Shump back to consciousness before his turn came around, so he could still act this round if you would like, albeit prone on the ground with a dropped weapon. Maybe use that free stand up from Fervor?

Three points about Ezren taking an AOO - first a large Lamia only has 5' reach so I was "hoping' that a huge one would only have 10' reach. But also, after reading your opinion on Shump's movement I believed him to be farther back than the map showed him. Lastly Ezren has 8 mirror images. It seems likely that the lamia can see through this illusion?


I am away from my copy of the AP at the moment, so my ability to check her Stat block is limited. I pulled up the monster she is based on and it does show only 10 foot reach. I will put her AoO in abeyance for the nonce until I can confirm if it was a typo in the AP or if the GM had a Derp Moment™. Shump's current location on the map is 100 feet away from his previous location and was a double move.

Does the damage to Grognar and Shump take stoneskin into consideration? Or is that on us? So many buffs to take into consideration in high level games, my hat's off to you for GMing such a complicated module.

Having checked the AP I have, it does indeed have the lamia's reach at 15 feet. In my opinion, however, I would deem this an editorial error and will rule that she has 10 foot reach for now; saving a potential hit on Ezren and/or saving one of his mirror images. Have also adjusted for missed stoneskin.

Additionally, Shump still gets a turn due to Griff's miracle. Since the giant's action should not really affect which ever direction Shump decides to go, will just get this out of the way...

The remaining giant moves into melee combat with Grognar, requiring just enough movement to prevent him from full-attacking.

Whoops no... so every hit should be an extra +2


While waiting on Grognar, a little thing to clarify. Shump, you dropped your weapon for that very brief time you fell unconscious. Did you quick draw out another weapon to make those attacks, or did you pick up your weapon as a move action? The second option would leave you with only enough actions for a single attack.
