Beneath Brokenhelm Hill and the weathered walls of Thornkeep lies an ancient maze of magic and madness. Once the workrooms and summoning chamber of a rebel Azlanti lord, these subterranean chambers were forgotten thousands of years ago after the eradication of the evil lord and his followers. Over the centuries, adventurers have found their way into these twisting passages and magnificent chambers, only to discover that the fading magic of the ancient Azlanti still lingers here. The people of Thornkeep call this dungeon the Halls Under the Hill, but those heroes who have dared its depths know this place by a different name: the Accursed Halls.

----

Note: we will not be starting off at the dungeon... I will give you plenty of opportunity to explore the town of Thornkeep, first. I think that's half the fun!

Liberty's Edge

Male Human (Varisian) Level 6, #-4

A brightly dressed, mustachioed dandy appears at the edge of Daggerdale. You wouldn't know it to look at him, but he grew up on the streets of Absalom, living day to day on the (willing and unwilling) kindness of strangers. Not long into adulthood, he affected the persona of a dashing Bravo - despite being obviously of Varisian descent and having never been to Brevoy or even the River Kingdoms in all his life. Over the last few years it has become more of a persona, though, and Arturo the Swift is becoming as happy on the inside as he is on the outside.

You're becoming happy, he often reminds himself, but you're not there yet.

Sauntering into town, his bejeweled scimitar slapping happily at his side, Arturo finds the first (female) person he can, "Greetings, my dear lady! What a fine day it is that brings me to this lovely town of yours. Please direct me to the best place you know for board and - if the fancy takes me - a drink or two? I would be much obliged and in return I would pray to Desna tonight that your abundant beauty remains with you well into old age."

Hang on a bit... you'll not be starting in Thornkeep... instead, Daggerdale, I believe. Or, maybe back at the Crypt? I want you to make your way in as well.

**EDITED ABOVE** Arturo wasn't at the crypt so Daggerdale it is, then. Sorry, misunderstood when you said "opportunity to explore the town of Thornkeep"... thought you meant that's where we were.

Decided to make my PFS character's description match an avatar I found. Makes it easier on everyone. Even I often forget that Lort is blond. ;-)

Arturo waits patiently for the homely woman to reply. Eventually, after what seems like two weeks to the man, he finally decides to interrupt her musing.

"Never you mind fair maiden," 'Maiden'? This one who looks like she's given birth to a troll? What possessed you man? Now, don't laugh, don't laugh... Arturo stifles a guffaw and continues, "I shall pray to Desna for you anyway. May your beauty be everlasting!" The rogue dips a deep bow - as much to hide his smiling face than anything else - and trots off before he bursts out laughing. Phew, that was close.

Arturo strolls the streets of Daggermark, looking for a likely place to drink and be merry. He'd heard a little about the group he was joining. Apparently they'd been to some place in the Fangwood called Kassen and had made quite the name for themselves in that pokey country town. Each to their own, I suppose. I prefer the city streets myself. Better to be a small fish in a huge amazing, exciting pond than a large fish in a puddle. Or something like that.

"Ooh! A supplies store!" exclaims the Varisian-who-has-never-been-to-Varisia to no-one in particular, "Time to spend some of this gold!" Arturo rushes inside and starts picking out items, almost at random, "Hmm, these manacles should come in handy. Oh, and a vial of holy water is never a bad investment. This oil should burn well in... yes! This lantern. And googles! Smokey, that looks so great. A bit hard to see out of, but still... that could be useful if I ever face off against the medusa! Ha ha! Earplugs to face the sirens, too, I guess... and ummm, yes, a shovel, a saw (why not?), spikes and a hammer to bash them in with (mustn't forget that)... into what, though? Well, you never know. A bag of fast-drying glue, how handy! And alchemist's fire. Ooh, two of those. I hear they're very effective in the right situation. Oh, and a pound of flour! Yes! Yes! Mustn't forget the flour. Some rope, I suppose. Pedestrian, but it has its uses."

Arturo places the rope on the pile of equipment he has made on the counter. The shopkeeper rolls his eyes as the young man excitedly talks about every single item he has found. "That'll be one hundred and fifty five gold exactly," he says, fully expecting the man before him to start putting back some of the more expensive items. Instead, Arturo empties his coin purse and counts out the right amount.

"Oh, and I'll need something to put all of that in! Let's see, leave enough money for drinks, bribes, room and board, a bunch of flowers for the woman I really don't following me after tonight's little frolic and," Arturo looks down at the lone silver remaining in his palm, "Oh dear. What kind of backpack can I get for a sliver?"

"This kind," the shopkeep plops a large sack down upon the pile of equipment, staring deadpan at the rogue.

"Sold!" replies Arturo joyously. Ah, and now I'm ready to face anything.

For those of you that just completed The Crypt of the Everflame, Hamilton Trask leads you all up the the city of Daggermark, in The River Kingdoms. He warns you that no single power controls the area, that this is a region dominated by bandits lords and the like.

You are brought to the Dryblade House, an imposing lodge managed by Venture-Captain Istivil Bosk, an elderly man with graying hair and a pinched, weathered face, and the center of most Society activity in the River Kingdoms.

Hamilton is required by the Society to report for a different mission, but a Varisian man that seems strangely appropriate for this area is waiting with the Venture-Captain.

"Pathfinders, word has come to the Pathfinder Society of strange occurrences around the thorp of Thornkeep. This small village, built around a small hill where a keep was built years ago, is overrun with bandits and barbarians. Why, they even have a settlement of goblins there... goblins that are actually tolerated!

"Rumors have it that strange things come from under the keep, it seems that perhaps the keep was built upon the ruins of a far, far older building. Spend some time getting to know the townsfolk, perhaps you will be able to learn something about what is going on there.

However, be careful about exploring outside of the town. I have heard a rumor that a dragon dwells in the Echo Wood; don’t ask me how I know. The Wolfmanes have a word for it that translates to something like
'Jade Razor,' but the thing’s real name is Thelsterex. If you go deep enough into the woods, you might just find its cave."

"Get what provisions you need here, as there will not be much in Thornkeep, as it is too small for extensive supplies. Small sundry items will likely be available, but for larger things you'll likely have to come back here, to Daggermark."

"Hello there! My name is Arturo the Swift. It is a pleasure to meet you all, at last," says the man in the seat next to the Venture-Captain, twirling his mustache. He is dressed like a Brevan, but his accent is distinctly Varisian. He notices the group looking at him as he stands, "Oh, do you like my new cape? I got it from a Mivonese bravo. He insisted that I kill him when I won the duel, but I took his cape instead. The authorities ran me out of town for not following through with things. Can you believe it? I tried to tell them that the Aldori dueling style doesn't require a duel to the death, but they told me to leave my mercy in Restov where it belonged (whatever that meant) and then stood there at the gate to make sure I left."

The man strolls over to the Venture-Captain's liquor cabinet, opens it like he owns the office and pours a liberal amount of brandy for himself, "This Brevic brandy isn't too bad," he says, swirling it around in the balloon glass to release the aromas, "You should try some. Oh, sorry, Venture-Captain, I hope this is okay? I'm used to having these meet ups in the taproom of some tavern. It feels wrong without a drink. Would any of you like some?" Arturo waves the bottle in the direction of the assembled group, ignoring whatever protests the Venture-Captain may have offered up to this point.

"So, Istivil... may I call you Istivil?... you say not to venture outside of town, but what if our investigations lead us beneath it? Surely you would not begrudge us a little delve under the keep?" Arturo smiles broadly, "Oh, I know you didn't mention anything about a dungeon... but an old keep and strange occurrences? Please! it's always below and never above! It's Cayden's fourth law of adventuring, or something like that."

"Hello Artie! I'm Roudantaimi, a humble servant of Shelyn the beautiful. And a gnome also, but that you might have guessed, right? No mistaking us to halflings, they're very different folk. Oh, what's this, brandy? Sure, I'll have a try"

The gnome shakes firmly Arturo's hand, and then helps himself a swig of the brandy from Arturo's glass, and swiftly starts couging and running around. "Uhhh, burns burns burns! How can you drink that? Are you sure it meant to be drank? Maybe it would be a good weapon if you set it into fire! We had a really fun adventure before coming here. There huge swarms of bats attacked us, and we only could fight them with fire. Also the pathfinders said that we should always carry some alchemist's fire's with us for similar situations. But I think you brandy might also, you never know without trying."

"Oh, and it is a very nice cape you have. Be careful so that you don't dirty it, if we go underground. Messy places, usually, full of dust and dirt. Oh, and maybe blood and slime, but that's part of the business. But don't you worry, I can do this presd.. predsi... prestigiditiditi... well, this nice little trick that cleans up your nice cape in a jiffy. Good as new, or your money back!"

And then, for a moment, the gnome goes silent with a thoughtful face.
"I vote we skip the woods. Dragon doesn't sound so nice. Maybe we should practice with smaller things first. Like lizards! Oh, not you, Poochie! Other lizards, they're bit like dragons, just smaller"

Jaender trails off as Rudi takes off, and he can't help but smile as the two seem to hit it off conversationally right from the get-go.

The nagaji walks around to stand by the gnome. "Will you teach my to talk to the dragon so it does not burn us with its fire breath."

Update to Ophiuchus' persona - still weird but not a cross dresser any longer.

Hmph...thought I dotted this a while ago.

The large man nods as the Venture Captain waxes on with the report. The brute was pretty simple, so he'd leave it to his fellow Pathfinders to get the details and filter what was needed to him. He instead studies 'Artie', trying to get a good read on the man's personality. The man seemed to be quite confident of himself, but also was easily thrown off track. The brute is not impressed.

He listens patiently as the two smaller ones speak, and can't help but chuckle as the nagaji matter-of-factly explains things to the swashbuckler. The ridiculous dress was gone, at least, but apparently the rest of the personality remained.

The man simply nods to the Venture Captain, signaling his assent to the assignment.

Arturo holds his hands up in surrender as Roudataimi grabs his glass and first the gnome then Ophiuchus bombard him with questions.

"Please, please," begins the loquacious rogue, first addressing Roudataimi, "it is indeed meant to be drunk. Though it is not for everyone, an experienced drinker can pick out many favors and aromas in such a fine beverage. This one is filled with nutty undertones, probably from the barrel aging process, and there is a hint of peach and anchove on the palate. Istivil here can undoubtedly tell you more."

He turns to the nagaji next, answering each of his questions in the order they were hurled at him, "I am not a girl. The only thing that truly tried to kill me was a roof that threw me down into a sawmill (long story, for the road). I won't tell you what to do all the time; you can decide that for yourself... unless you need me to? You do not need to drink this to be friends with me, and anyone who requires you to do something you don't like in order to be friends with you is no true friend (they are called bullies - or Venture Captains)," Arturo shoots a sly and knowing wink at Bosk to disarm the comment, "and Roudataimi, if you teach this poor fellow how to speak with dragons, I believe he'll be more likely to be killed by one. Dragons are for fleeing from, not conversing with."

Jaender chuckles at the eager companions introducing themselves to the confident man. Having no questions for the venture captain, as it seems the majority of the information they need to start will be with the villagers, he waits patiently as his companions finish their conversation, then moves with them out to the town to finish his shopping, and speak with different people.

Once we get out to speak with people, I will start by asking them if they have heard of thornkeep and all the rumors, and ask them to tell me what rumors they have heard. Arturo is taken aback slightly. Since the Venture-Captain has resolved to simply silently observe the group for now, he pours himself another drink.

"Mr. Girl? My friend, have you any psychological issues that need working through?" asks Arturo, genuine concern in his voice, "Perhaps it is simply your difficulty in processing our racial differences. A few more of these," he holds up his brandy, "and I'd be pleased to show you what differentiates human men from women." Arturo smiles slyly as he pats his manhood.

"As for dragons, I've not faced any, but I can't imagine they go in for so many questions. They are not known for their patience or their mercy. They are, however, known for burping fire. Aside from all that, dragons are intelligent and I suppose most dragons of this region would speak Brevic or Taldan. No need to learn Draconic."

Arturo turns to Roudataimi, and whispers, "Do you think I need to pick up a gag for our friend here? You know, just in case we do encounter a dragon?"

The adventuring party makes its way into the town of Thornkeep. Thornkeep lies about 10 miles from the broad, sluggish West Sellen River and the ruins of the once-prosperous town of Mosswater. The settlement is a disorderly, ramshackle affair that huddles on a low hill beneath the bramble-covered walls of its namesake castle. The presence of the castle provides the people of Thornkeep with just enough protection to deter the pirates and brigands of the nearby River Kingdoms, while offering Thornkeep’s own bandits and thieves a safe base from which they can prey on traffic along the West Sellen or the Crusader Road.

Just let me know where you want to go... refer to the Thornkeep map. You are coming in on the road from the SE.

Arturo spends some time in the Town Green, socializing with the locals. He will happily accept any challenge duel, provided that non-lethality is stipulated in advance. Otherwise, he will charm the women to the best of his abilities (keeping in mind that his own estimation of his abilities is much more generous than the reality).

If possible, Arturo strikes up a conversation and eventually turns the topic towards current events and local rumors. "I love a good rumor, my fair damsel," he is known to often say to a woman whose looks do not warrant the compliments Arturo has paid her, "I shall share one with you if you will share one with me. I have heard that the Swordlords of Restov are attempting to tame the unclaimed northern River Kingdoms. Perhaps someone as lovely as yourself may find opportunity there. Beauty such as yours is always appreciated by colonists. Now, do you have anything you'd like to share with me?"

My diplomacy is +5, Knowledge (local) +6 and Knowledge (dungeoneering) +6. Arturo is mostly trying to find local rumors and anything he can about Thornkeep and the castle itself. I'm assuming the venture-captain had little to add prior to our departure?

Seemingly randomly the wolf turns and jaunts down side-streets, passing through alleys toward some unknown destination which Vox cannot perceive with his lacking sense of smell. When at last the wolf ends its purposeful trot near a meat selling stand, the young man pulls a few coins and purchases a treat for the animal.

At the young man's feet, the wolf begins to tear the morsel into bloody chunks, devouring the pieces in an orgiastic frenzy. Looking around the area, Vox scans for his companions.

Where did you lead us, Einhardt? Vox thinks to himself.

Poochie, after several attempts to talk to the locals, finally gets a response from an older man. "Just between you and me, I hear Mosswater’s demise wasn’t the result of some merrow attack—it was a result of the foul algae that pollutes Glow Water Lake! Sure, it’s pretty to look at, but it’s definitely poisonous as well."

Sven enters the Greenforest Inn, and immediately is greeted by a balding, middle-aged man with a mustache like a bristle brush. "Good day, traveler! I am Shandar Tulman, proprietor of this place. Private rooms are 1 gold per night, and includes breakfast and dinner. A bed and a trunk in the common room is 2 silver per night, and includes a loaf or porridge for breakfast."

"Are you in town for adventure? I hear that Lord Silvercrown’s son is missing. He went treasure hunting in the Accursed Halls, but no one in Mivon has heard from him since, and the nobles are getting antsy for his return. No doubt there’s a reward if you can find out what happened to him.

"Who is Lord Silvercrown? Oh, he's a minor lord in Mivon, and his son, Garhal came into Thornkeep with a band of adventurers much like yourself a while back... maybe two to three months ago. I'd check in with the Blue Basilisks, a local mercenary group if you wanted to know more."

Arturo finally discovers a woman that he can make small-talk with. She is a caravaner staying in town. "“Undead attacked my caravan on my way up the Dagger Road! The ghouls nabbed one of my horses before I could even make it past Fraston Orchard, and I don’t see the priests around here doing a damn thing about it! Brother Eldrast says he’s on the case, but I’ve yet to see a lick of results.

"Brother Eldrast? He's the local priest, worships Gorum at the Shrine of Battle. He's a good man, really, always willing to help out someone who has proven himself in battle, but perhaps less tolerant of those who 'don't get their hands dirty', as he would say."

Flush with information, Arturo bows a deep bow to the caravaner. "My lady, thank you very much for the pleasure of your company and for the information," Arturo kisses the back of her hand, "Alas but we must part ways and I shall join my friends at the nearest tavern. If you need for companionship tonight, do not hesitate to seek me out!"

With that (and a swirl of his new cloak), Arturo strides off to the tavern to meet his friends. I hope they have some juicy information to share also. We should try to offer some aid to this Eldrast, he'll hopefully be grateful and give us some more information. Ah, the information trade. Arturo breathes deeply of the local forest air, and instantly decides he'll never do that again when his nostrils fill with goblin odor. Charming! They seem to be allowed the run of the place.

The brute nods at the innkeeper, pulling a gold coin out wordlessly and handing it to the man. Having struck gold, in his mind, he immediately leaves to go tell the others of his findings.

He wanders the Town Green, hoping to find one of his companions. This seemed the most likely venue to run into one of them.

I'm going to assume we have all already agreed to meet up at a pre-determined location after doing some exploring. We have info from Poochie, Sven, and Arturo so far. Jaender is at the Goblin Bazaar, Vox is likely in the same place, guessing that the bazaar is the only open-air area that might sell meat (please correct me if I am wrong Vox!) and Rudi is wandering the streets gathering information.

So far, in grand sandbox style, we seem to have 3 different opportunities for exploration already. If you don't mind me nudging this along, I say our GM gives Vox, Rudi, and I any information (or lack of) we might have gathered, and our next posts will be at the end of the day, meeting in the tavern where we can discuss what we know so far, and what we want to start out doing, unless we want to continue to explore. I am all about something more efficient though if there are suggestions!

EDIT****** I was going to add some notes from above to the sheet, but I couldn't find Glow Water Lake on the map... might be a good idea to ask that person where that lake is... :)

You able to learn that the Glow Water Lake is about 10 miles to the east, and that there is a ghost town on its shores.

Roudi and Vox (is Einhardt with?) make their way to the Goblin Bazaar. Several goblins are here, selling their wares, none of which looks all that appealing. You do notice a male goblin with a small cart, which has several small glass vials on it. "Me is Zarklezam, seller of potions and ointments! Powerful magic!" He gives a big goblin smile when he says that.

Another small stand is run by an old goblin (even by their standards, she looks old) who goes by the name of Kastya, and she has a basket full of what she calls charms and good luck tokens, but look to you to be nothing more worthless beads and pretty stones.

Arturo walks around the tavern for a while, and notices that no-one is there. He elects to grab an ale and a table and wait for his companions to arrive. I wonder if their information is more useful than mine... I wonder if that waitress is single?

When the companions eventually arrive, they find Arturo several drinks deep into his session with an interesting looking waitress on his lap. Oh, she has curves in all the right places - but she has curves in several wrong places, too. Arturo seems not to notice as he raises a mug in toast, "Come, sit down and be merry my new friends! The lovely creature who is warming the upper portion of my legs is called Lydia - a name as beautiful she herself."

Wow. Ophiuchus would make a very successful cock block...

Mr Hairylip eyes the Nagaji skeptically, I'm not sure if this guy is insane or if all of his race are like that. I think I'll go with insane. Still, at least he's cheery enough - even when he inevitably brings up being killed by dead things. What's up with that?

"How could I not love a maiden so fair?" begins Arturo tactfully, "But I would not dream of shackling this poor sweetheart to my side, even if she would have me permanently. Alas for me that I am not marriage material. As for the strong man who sings, I really must hear his life some time. I've not heard him since we left Daggermark, but I'm sure he would have a most pleasing baritone. I am surprised he sings, though. Most singers are more loquacious. Wouldn't you agree, Lydia?" Arturo doesn't really listen to Lydia's reply, as he shouts across the taproom, "Strong Brute, my friend! Come sit with us. If you are willing, a song would be most welcome!"

Arturo sits back, perhaps trying to remember what else the strange Pathfinder opposite had asked, "The Mosswater has plants on it that are killing people, eh? Well that certainly counts as a strange occurrence. Can't say that I'm overly keen on looking into it, though. As for adventures, I've not had many. I've spent most of my time in Absalom, which is its own adventure. Not so many undead there, though. What is your obsession with them?"

The brute looks up from his meal, having been completely unaware of the arrival of the others. His blue eyes take on a panicked look at the request from Mr. Hairylip as he rises and slowly makes his way over to where his companions are congregating. Wiping the remnants of his meal off his face and beard with the back of his hand, he shakes his head solemnly.

"This one only sang when he was working in the fields, and only sang of sadness." This is delivered in a very matter of fact, non-hostile way. He now regards them all, "Lord Silvercrown's son went missing in the Accursed Halls. It was about two to three months ago. He's probably dead." He shrugs, looking to Ophiuchus. "This one guesses he might be alive again, though. Anyway, there is likely a reward for his return or information regarding his very probable demise. The Blue Basilisks might have more information."

Jaender shuffles into the bar as Ophiuchus approaches Arturo, and smiles at the utter confusion he creates with the rogue. He waits in the shadows of the busy place as they speak, eventually calling Strong Brute over.

Unexpectedly, he pipes up from the midst of the group. "Missing nobleman's son? Killer botany? This place is going to be more exciting than even I had hoped for! Adventures to be had everywhere, and so much to report on for the society! I was unable to turn anything up out on the streets today, I am glad you all had much more luck than I!"

The small, dark skinned wayang clambers up a nearby barstool, gives the maiden on Arturo's lap a wink, and orders a drink. His black robe and hood hang loosely around his shoulders, reflecting his relaxed and open personality. The white marks on his face, decorative scarring reflecting the heavenly lights in the sky, seem particularly bright as he enjoys the drink and conversation with his new friends.

Arturo, I hate to let you down, but there are only four people working at the Greenforest Inn... who I will describe.

At the Greenforest Inn, the team notes the help are keeping busy. You've already met Shandar, and his wife, Jalia, is regarded as the best cook in town (her food is quite good). The servers are Vess and Edders, surprisingly both male. So, Arturo is a little confused about who he might have on his lap. ;)

Roudi's question to the goblins gets an immediate, though perhaps only partially intelligible, response.
"What? You no know Great Chief Graalsk? He big chief of Brambleclaw Tribe. He gonna be King of Zod! How you not know that? You dumb or something?" Both goblins giggle. "Great Chief have moot every night! We make big plans! Learn about Kingdom of Zod! Great Goblin Kingdom. You wait! Everybody know Zod soon! Zod be master of all land!"

The two start chanting at this point, pounding their fists in their hands, "Zod! Zod! Zod!" and many other gobbos join in.

You do note, thought that there really aren't a huge number of goblins here. Probably only about a dozen.

It appears Arturo mistook the "lovely" Lydia for a waitress. Perhaps she was waiting here for her husband...

"So, which of these leads do you think we should try our hands at investigating?" Arturo asks the companions who have arrived, "I personally like the sound of a reward. I know we're here on official business, but if someone wants to pay us at the same time, then all the better, right?"
