"Ideas! Of course, we have Sardon, who is very strong and nimble, use the climbers kit to scale to the next level. It has the necessary tools. It will not be stealthy, though. Then we follow the Padaprajna on the rope he leaves behind for us."
These crampons, pitons, ropes, and other tools give you a +2 circumstance bonus on Climb checks.
Make Your Own Handholds and FootholdsYou can make your own handholds and footholds by pounding pitons into a wall. Doing so takes 1 minute per piton, and one piton is needed per 5 feet of distance. As with any surface that offers handholds and footholds, a wall with pitons in it has a DC of 15. In the same way, a climber with a handaxe or similar implement can cut handholds in an ice wall.
Mahasi lays out ropes and pitons. He has no knowledge in climbing but attempts to organize the contents of the climber's kit in a logical way.

"Perhaps Sardon can make the climb with the climbers kit, then we can climb with the hand and foot holds. We shall tie a rope around Sardon when he makes the climb, if he falls he will be safe and we can pull him up. In the same way, Sardon can lower the rope and we shall tie it around ourselves as we make the climb, Sardon shall assist us by pulling us up."
"Another idea is if we could use the climbing kit to climb the inside where the collapsed staircase is, perhaps that will be an easier climb."
Thaurux |
”There must be some internal passage way for these lizard men to travel about their lair freely, maybe there is a crack in the ceiling where the water was coming through or a chimney where the brazier was. Balenar, how did you come to this location, did you see how the lizard men made their way about? Perhaps the lizard man with the scimitar will come back to visit his prisoner.”
DM Kludde |
A rope and grappling hook would actually be one option this could work: the top level of the tower has a rail running along it. You would need to get on the outside to get a shot at it, though.
These monsters knocked me out when I entered the lower levels of the tower. They've been moving around quickly, so I think they fit through the rubble in the staircase.
The rubble in the staircase is the staircase, which means that what lies down cannot be up there. Naiyra figures that she can clear the rubble lying down here, she would be left with and empty shaft, and one that is considerably easier to climb than the outside of the fortress.
Sardon |
Sardon walks to the ledge where the eastern side of the tower has crumbled away. He looks out to see if he could possibly hook the rail on the top of the North section of the tower from there.
DM Kludde |
Sardon look up. From, his grappling hook can only reach the eastern part of the tower. Attaching it to the rail looks to be no problem, but the eastern side looks very fragile. Hitting the northern section is harder, but doable. It would mean having a part of the rope not next to a wall, but it would certainly be possible to climb up.
After a few tries, Sardon manages to get the grappling hook attached to the rail on the northern wall. The rope is held taut - but who will climb?
Climb check is 5, and it takes three rounds to climb up.
Sardon |
Giving the rope a tug to set the hook, Sardon stares at it for a moment, and then ties off this end. He contemplates the distance and the height, and decides to leave his armor on.
"I'll pull the rope tight and let it go, twice if all is well," he says, as the sorcerer begins to cast a spell on him.
Slowly he begins to pull himself up the rope.
Climb+4 with armor on means I'll make it no matter what (no autofail on a 1 with skill rolls.)
Reaching the top, he does his best to crawl over the rail quietly.
stealth+20 from invisibility: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (4) + 17 = 21
Naiyra |
Naiyra considers the staircase, but hears some commotion where the others are. She returns to find that Sardon has disappeared. Mahasi probably had something to do with that, he was muttering some magical mumbo jumbo.
Seeing the rope setup Nairya figures it's an easy climb as well. Figuring out what is happening she follows Sardon out and up. She tries to be as quiet as possible. She struggles with the rope initially, but manages to make progress. She finds the going hard and needs to rest a moment right near the top. She looks down for moment. Why did you have to look down! You can do this, it's climbing a silly rope, it will be fine. Now get over the damn railing!. With a surge she manages to get over the railing and light lightly on her feet surveying this new area.

He is overcome by fear momentarily, but makes it up a round after the others lost a round, but didn't fail by 5 or more. Hi is too focused on climbing to bother with stealth.
DM Kludde |
The topmost level of the tower contains a large ledge, that runs around the building, on which the heroes are standing.
Assuming you will not move east.
On the northern side, there is a door. The western contains an open archway. The four wings of the tower are completely open on this level, forming one great, cross-shaped chamber with arched ceilings. The decayed remnants of a carpet run from the doorways at the end of each wing, meeting in the center, where a spiral staircase drops out of sight below. A large, throne-like chair stands in the middle of the eastern wing next to a big chest.
Standing on the ledge, the view is too bad to see if anyone is inside.
Naiyra |
Naiyra draws her newly acquired scimitar as she carefully moves along the ledge towards the northern door. She examines the door and the area around it for any sign of a trap.

Oh bugger.
Thaurux climbs up in a rattling of nervousness and armour. As he is about to reach the top, it is clear to both Naiyra and Sardon that something is wrong. In the blink of an eye, Thaurux makes a slip - he's going to need some help to not fall off, and plunge to his almost certain death!
Can I get climb checks from those standing near?

[ooc]I'm fairly certain a 1 just means he freezes. Usually failing a climb roll by <5 means you don't move, it's the 5 or more that drops you. If I need to try to help Thaurux....
climb?: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Sardon takes advantage of his invisibility to scout around the top of the tower, peering into the western archway, avoiding the eastern side.
DM Kludde |
Thaurux seems to be struggling in getting up the wall for a moment, and for a flash it seemed as if he might just fall. Just at this moment, he is grabbed by an invisible hand, and pulled up onto the ledge.
Walking around the ledge and peering into the western archway, Sardon gets a good view of the main hall that cover the entire top floor of the tower. Mean while, Naiyra, having snuck in through the northern door, gets treated to the same view: A troglodyte, with a stunted albino crocodile at his side, is peering into the grey distance. Obvlious to the presence of the heroes.
Map updated. Thaurux and Mahasi: please indicate where you would be positioned. The bard came along as well.
Thaurux |
Seeing his companion’s lead the way, Thaurux climbs, but the rain slicking the rope make his progression slow and the soaking of his clothes make his movement more difficult. He slips…
Everything is hazy and the images in the rain, everything is slow. Am I falling? What are those voices, are they my companions or the voices of the dragon gods discussing my fate…
... a hand! Yes a had, great dragon be blessed!
Thaurux thanks his companions and is shaken by his brush with death. He may have developed a fear of heights now.
Naiyra |
Naiyra feels the adrenaline start pumping as she waits for companions to move into position, eager for the coming battle. She checks her equipment, the buckler on her left arm and the fine scimitar in her right.
Sardon |
Sardon walks into the room at a casual pace, letting the haft of his guisarme rattle against the scales of armor hanging by his knees. Still invisible, he is making more than enough noise to be heard.

Sardon's noises break the troglodyte from his dreamy state. He turns around to investigate the noise. As he walks in the direction of Sardon, the stench gets thicker and thicker

The troglodyte chief moves further towards the clanging noise. He briefly stop to cast a spell on his crocodile, then sends the creature forward.
The crocodile is now within range of Sardon, but has not pinpointed him.
This is the surprise round - everybody can act, and Naiyra, Sardon and Mahasi can act before the monsters on round 1
As soon as one the heroes makes a move, music starts playing the background:
so we follow your man
back your front door
and we're waiting for you

Grease on druid, DC 16
DM Kludde |
Thanks, Mahasi
Mahasi speaks an incantation, and the floor below the monster (a druid, indeed) becomes shiny and slippery.
Reflex save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Tasskar the troglodyte druid briefly slips as the ground becomes slippery, but manages to keep his bearing, and does not fall over.
Mahasi Mi Khaing |
If he moves:
A creature can walk within or through the area of grease at half normal speed with a DC 10 Acrobatics check. Failure means it can't move that round (and must then make a Reflex save or fall), while failure by 5 or more means it falls (see the Acrobatics skill for details). Creatures that do not move on their turn do not need to make this check and are not considered flat-footed .
Sardon |
Next time you update the map, can we get the greased area?
Surprise round:
As the crocodile comes within his range, Sardon strikes. No messing around with trying to flip the croc over, he simply tries to take the thing out of the fight as quickly as possible.

Before the chief can add any specifics to his threat, Thaurux rushes up and swing his pole arm at the reptile, who only barely avoids him. Sardon moves up, and trips the chief, with Mahasi casting grease on the floor (Which from now on will appear on the map).
