“Close the door,” Ambrus Valsin murmurs as the team gathers in his office. “Let me start by saying, this mission is not for dissemination among other members of the Society.” The chamberlain of the Grand Lodge gives everyone a serious look in turn before continuing. “This mission is not an investigation, just a simple, straightforward assignment, but that makes it no less important.”

“I need you to book passage to the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, and cross over into Irrisen. You’re to head north and rendezvous with another team who have captured some—” Valsin pauses for a heartbeat before continuing. “—persons of interest. We have reason to believe that these individuals have information on the Shadow Lodge cells that are refusing to reconcile with the Society under Grandmaster Torch’s leadership.”

Valsin’s expression becomes particularly grim at that point. “If these rogue cells are outright refusing amnesty, then they represent a clear threat to all of us. I need you to take charge of these captives and get them out of Irrisen safely and quietly. Once you’re clear of Irrisen, a larger extraction team will take custody of them and bring them in for questioning. Of course, we will cover the expense of your travel in full, and provide maps to lead you to the meeting point in Irrisen. Because of the nature of the mission and Irrisen itself, you’ll be meeting the other team in the field, away from what passes for civilization up there. The team you’ll be getting the prisoners from will show you the best route out of Irrisen, and the castellan of Trollheim has agreed to grant you passage through his lands. You are responsible for avoiding unexpected trouble between the handoff and Trollheim.”

Valsin gestures for the team to depart, but pauses, staring at his fireplace for a moment before adding, “Wait. You need to know this. Your prisoners will be goblins. The Shadow Lodge separatists made extensive use of the sadistic creatures as soldiers and servants, and as much as you may want to throttle them, please remember that we need them alive.” Then with a final nod for luck, the venture-captain dismisses the group.

You can describe your character, introduce yourselves and ask the Venture-Captain any questions you might have.

Castien Galondiir stands in front of Venture-Captain Valsin, an intense look of concentration on his face as he listens to the man's instructions. He stands just over six feet tall, with fair skin, white hair, and green eyes. He has a warrior's build, and carries a beautifully-made darkwood composite longbow, but wears no armor.

His eyes widen considerably at the mention of goblins, but he holds his tongue, not wishing to interrupt the flow of information. Dismissed, he turns to the others and introduces himself.

"M-my n-name is C-c-castien G-galondiir. D-d-does anyone n-need to p-p-purchase anything b-before we g-go?"

Ardisen is late in his seventeenth year, a tall young man with a slender jawline. He typically wears his hair in a modern style designed to draw attention to his handsome face. His appearance is no accident, as he goes to great pains to make the most of his pale Chelaxian complexion. Ardisen is garbed in tailored and well fitted travelling attire, but it seems to have seen very little actual exploration. The only clear sign of Ardisens magical talent are the spellbook poking out of his backpack and the viper familiar that often weaves absent-mindedly around his arms and shoulders. A light crossbow and sheathed dagger appear to be the enchanters only weapons, but a wand slipped through his belt and a strange wooden tube slung over his back may suggest otherwise. A well polished wayfinder hangs from the Chelaxians belt.

"What can we expect in the Lands of the Linnorm Kings? I can't say I've had the pleasure of visiting there before."

The enchanters tone and use of language displays his education and upper class upbringing, but his smile and demeanor are friendly and disarming.

"I have a reasonable understanding of goblins as a result of some previous research, I doubt I'll have any issues getting them to tow the line."

A young blonde maiden with piercing blue eyes is short in stature at the ripe age of 17. She looks oddly out of place carrying a longbow and heavy mace at her side.

"More traveling! I can't wait to thee the Lands of Linnorm Kings, I've never been there either. This is one of the benefits of working as an adventurer. I will ensure these creatures come back alive."

Looking at Castien and the other young man, Mary continues, "Oh my, where are my manners? My name is Mary Dontingham, paladin of Abadar. It is my honor to meet you."

She says to Castien, "Why thank you for reminding me to purchase something, but I believe I have all that I need, I think. Bow, arrows, weapon, but most importantly I have new friends, and money can't purchase that!"

Mary greets the young man, "While I have no doubt the goblins will try to be mischievous, don't be shy and not tell us your name. I hope your name isn't buried deep in that huge book of yours!"

"Arrows for me, my friends, and don't we all need something warm and fluffy to wear in Irrisen? Infernally cold, I hear." The sophisticated drawl of the dapper, mustachioed young man, and his somewhat jaunty finery mark him as a Taldan through and through. His weapons and armor are placed neatly next to his backpack--almost spotless leather armor, a longsword, and a shortbow. He rises and bows to Mary first. "Xoricon ber Zereste ber Kellion, although I'm known in parts as Quickblade, and may I say it is an untrammelled pleasure to have such a noble companion as you on this quest, fair maiden of the holy mace." With a disarming smile, he then makes the rounds and bends the knee courteously to each man in turn with the ease of a practiced worker of rooms and crowds, although his display does not quite relieve the whiff of arrogance so common to Taldans.

"These goblins--never met one--they don't speak Taldane, do they? Friend Chelaxian, do you feel you'll be able to translate for us? Perhaps they can recite poetry to entertain us."

One of the other members of the team speaks up in response to Xoricon's question. "I can translate their jibber-jabber. My people keep goblinoids as slaves at home. Filthy creatures, but they reproduce so quickly they're virtually unkillable as a group. Like weeds, I'm given to understand." Her tone, matching the sneer on her lips, said she'd never had any personal interaction with weeds.

She is small, shorter than average for a woman and slender. Together her skin, pale as milk, and her hair, dark as a raven's wing, mark her as Chelish. Her clothes are finely made, though practical rather than noble frippery, and her gear- from her backpack to the handle of the dagger at her hip- shows no sign of trail wear.

"Aspexia Gallonica Crispin, of Egorion." She looks young- only scarcely older than Mary or Ardisen- but the self-assurance in her voice speaks of more than a teenager's years. Also odd, while she looks fully human, her eyes seem to gleam with reflected firelight from the hearth even when the angle should make it impossible.

Ardisen listens intently to the conversation, before interjecting.

"Apologises, my name is Ardisen Greymore. It's a pleasure to meet you."

The enchanter turns to Cha-Ka and Castien, before addressing Xoricon.

"Good to see you both again. I've picked up a couple more spells if you're interested my friend? Xoricon, I'm afraid I don't speak such a foul tongue as goblinoid, but from what I understand some of them have a basic grasp of the common tongue. "

Finally, the young man bows towards Aspex, clearly intrigued by her heritage and glad to meet a fellow Egorian.

"A fellow Chelaxian, what a delightfully rare pleasure. Have you been part of the Society long? I've found my field assignments to be most... Enlightening."

"Hmm..it occurs to me that we will need to carry food for us...and for these goblins. How many days is this journey expected to take, Venture-Captain? I wonder if we need a pack animal. Unless one of the many wizards in this room has one of those magical holding satchels."

Grand Lodge

Ambrus Valsin glares at you, probably annoyed by your questions. Yet he does his best to answer them, aware that knowledge is all that keeps unexperienced Pathfinders from a certain death.

"Make no mistake, you won't stay in the Lands of Linnorm Kings for long. Your mission starts in Irrisen, and will end when you finally exit this blasted land along with your detainees. We're talking witchery, aided by the bitter cold that has its endless grasp upon this land."

"I'm afraid a pack animal is out of question. Goblins hate dogs, horses and all beasts related to them with a passion, they simply won't tolerate any of those beasts to live. You will be given some rations when you meet with your contact, Sverrir Lightfoot, but you might want to take some extra... just in case."

"As for the time at your disposal, it’s a three and a half day journey from your rendezvous point to the extraction point outside Trollheim, but the extraction team will remain in place for an additional day in case you’re delayed. Just remember, don’t look for trouble."

Anyone trained in the following skills can make a check with either, or both: Knowledge (Geography), Knowledge (Local).

You may of course make any purchases necessary before leaving.

Xoricon and Castien, could you please report in the Discussion thread with your PFS number? Many thanks.

Aspex gives Ardisen a companionable nod that could only charitably be called a return bow. Where Xoricon gives off a whiff of Taldan arrogance, the petite woman fairly reeks of Chelaxian pride. "This will be my first foray with the Society. I have until recently been matriculating at the Academy. Father suggested I take a few years away from my studies, made arrangements, and here I am." For a fellow Egorian, there is little question what Academy she is talking about.

She glances at Xoricon and then turns to the Venture Captain to hear his response about the necessity of a pack animal.

Cha-Ka is a young Tengu, standing about 4'5" in height. His clothes look like he woke up some time in the middle of the night and decided to go the desert. And he didn't bother to turn on the lights as he got dressed. Around his head is what appears to be a scarf just recently, and rather poorly, dyed a streaky off-black. The color clashes with his glossy black feathers, which are in turn a stark contrast from the light sandy color of the rest of his clothes. On his back is strapped a long, curved blade. Upon seeing both Castien and Ardisen, he grins happily at them.

Turning to the Venture Capatin, he asks "Do you expect someone to try to rescue the goblins? Is there some sign by which we should be able to identify our extraction team as opposed to some group pretending to be them?"

While he doesn't introduce himself to the rest of the group, the slip seems to be more one of obliviousness rather than one of ill intent.

Upon hearing Mary's question, he eagerly rummages through his bag. "I have rope! And...this!" He pulls out some rope and a small stick, which he enthusiastically waves around. Though he owns it and seems to know what it does, he clearly has no idea how to use it.

Xaricon:
Goblins are insane and sadistic. They have a strong hatred of dogs and a fear of horses, both rivaled only by their unnatural love of fire and destruction.

Making the journey in 3-1/2 days doesn’t allow for much time for hunting, unless the party uses the extra day allowed by the extraction team. Provisions for the journey goblins will be provided, but they’ll need supervision. Goblins have fast metabolisms and find hunger painful. If they’re not watched, they’ll eat their rations all at once.

The Venture-Captain continues. "I doubt the remnants of the Shadow Lodge would budge a finger for these goblins, unless to slay them to prevent the goblins to spill the beans. You should probably keep an eye out for them, though I imagine you will have other concerns. As for the group of Pathfinders, you will know. If they have goblins in custody, it's them."

Ardisen nods.

"While I agree that the goblins will need to be watched, they are captives after all, perhaps we should try the carrot before the stick? Goblins are not known for their intellect. I may be able to convince them to cooperate. It can't hurt to try."

Considering the query about healing, the enchanter looks warily at Mary, deciding against divulging the infernal healing magic he just mastered for the time being and instead changing the subject.

"I would advise everyone who doesn't already have appropriate attire purchases some. None of us will be any use to the Society frozen to death. Is there anything else you feel we should know before we depart Venture Captain?"

Despite himself Ardisen smirks at the Venture Captains annoyance, despite his respect for the mans authority. Leaving with the rest of the operatives, he watches them shop around for the items they require, joining in polite conversation whenever it is struck up. Thankfully, he had used some of the funds from his most recent expedition to purchase some new clothing, including a fine new outfit for the winter. He'd also returned from his previous adventure to find the cloak of resistance that had been found during his Confirmation was now clean and ready to add to his expanding wardrode. At this rate he'd need to hire a servant to carry his outfits and spellbooks... Actually that didn't sound like a bad idea.

As they walked the enchanter regarded his fellow Chelaxian. He'd never been on an assignment with someone from his homeland, especially not a wizard from Egorian like he. Of course, Ardisen hadn't attended the Academy, he'd been mentored personally by an elderly adept. He wasn't about to tell Aspex that, at risk she tried to use that against him. Her presence unnerved him. While he wasn't the best at reading people, it was clear that she lacked much of his ability to mask contempt for those beneath them. What he concealed with a charming smile and honeyed words, she wore on her sleeve. While he respected her patriotic pride, he worried she may undo the image he'd been fostering in other Pathfinders. As they continued their shopping the young wizard hoped his concerns weren't justified.

Sorry for the exposition blocks, having a quiet night so I thought I'd take the chance to explain a few recent and future purchases and flesh out Ardisens character, especially since it's his first meeting with another Chelaxian Pathfinder. Hope no one drifted off reading that.

Your journey from Absalom to northwest Irrisen is long but mostly uneventful. You finally arrive at the camp set by Sverrir Lightfoot and her team, which stands approximately 53 miles north of the Rimeflow River and 6 miles east of the Iceflow River. Her team consists of six Ulfen rangers and druids, including herself. When you arrive, Sverrir’s team are already in the process of breaking down their shelters in preparation to move. The rough but fair Ulfen woman nods at you in recognition as you make your way to her and her six prisoners of impending mayhem.

"Well met, Pathfinders, I'm Sverrir Lightfoot. We've been looking forward to delivering those little troublemakers for ahile now. Glad this time is finally at hand!" she exclamates with a weary sigh. "Let's get down to business. Here are your six wards. Say 'hi' to your new masters, boys!"

Four of the six goblins immediately switch their attention to you, grinning their best carnivorous smile, a glint of malice in their eyes. "Weird-smelling longshanks are new bosses now? Weeee!" The two other goblins obviously weren't listening, too busy eyeing the large bag not too far away.

"Aren't they cute," she sighs. "Anyway, here's a map for getting to the hamlet of Harvest’s End, where you’ll probably have the easiest time crossing the Rimeflow River. We'll also give you this bag of trail rations." She motions at the bag envied by the two ever-hungry goblins. "You should have enough for your journey, provided you don't squander them, or worse, have the little nasties gulp them down."

There is four days' worth of rations for each of you, as well as for the six goblins.

"Aren't you lucky to head back to civilized lands while we're stuck here in this backcountry frozen hellhole. I'm almost jealous of your newfound company. Anyway, we'll be on our way."

Listening to Sverrirs brief handover, the enchanter smiles and nods as she dismisses herself. His eyes quickly move to the six goblins and the bag of rations that have been left for them.

"I'll go introduce us, see if I can make a good impression. Someone might want to secure the rations."

Ardisen chuckled to himself as he moved over to the goblins. He'd never imagined his role in the Pathfinder Society would involve him trying to endear himself to goblinoids. Approaching the goblins, the wizard takes a knee allowing himself to be face to face with the creatures.

"My name is Ardisen Greymore, and these are my fellow Pathfinders. As Sverrir said, we're your new guardians. If the six of you cooperate, we'll keep you safe, treat you well and escort you safely to your destination without issue." Ardisen clicks his fingers to grab the attention of any goblin who's focus has wandered. "Just stick close to me and you'll have nothing to worry about."

Ardisen offers the creatures a wicked smile in closing.

Could you use the OOC tag for this kind of comment, please? Thanks!

The goblins seem satisfied with the idea to be provided food later on - at least for now! The company of Pathfinders and detainees slowly moves forward on the rime-covered road, entering Irrisen a mile later.

The map that Lightfoot provided takes you past two ancient stone watchtowers set in a low mountain pass. The map indicates they’ve been deserted since the Winter War.

A narrow southern pass winds its way through steep, icy hills, the frigid wind periodically dusting all in its path with a layer of snow. Two ancient stone watchtowers stand on either side of the path between two nearly vertical bluffs rising thirty feet to either side, just as Lightfoot’s map indicated they would. The eighty-foot-wide path narrows to a mere twenty-five feet in width between the two fifty-foot towers.

The watchtowers appear to be abandoned, but Cha-Ka, Aspex, Mary and Aridsen notice that snow has been knocked off the battlements. On closer inspection, you catch glimpse of the large, balloon-shaped heads of goblins atop the towers, at the moment they attack you!

I just want to make sure I have my distances right. I'm reading the map as follows: if Aspex were to move 3 squares to her right to take cover behind the middle of the 3 rocks, it would be 110 ft. to the battlement adjacent to the top left goblin in the southern tower. Correct?

Xoricon moves to Castien's side and taps his quiver, uttering arcane words. "I can do little at this range, friend, but let me assist you," he mutters. "Can anyone conceal the prisoners with mist or the like?"

Abundant Ammunition. Out of range of anything else. Pick 'em off!

Grand Lodge

Aspex: for some reason I'm counting 20 squares, that's 100 ft.

Xoricon casts a spell to help Castien, who shoots in turn at the goblins in the northern tower. His aim is peerless, and the two goblins occupying the tower fall stone dead, shafted by the elven missiles.

The goblins from the southern tower replicate in kind, shooting with their bows, but both of their arrows fall short.

Meanwhile, you can see a plume of greasy black smoke emerging from the southern tower. This smoke, if not stopped quickly, could be seen from many miles away.

The frostfur goblins tug on the rope binding them, pleading: "Longshanks, let goblins help! We good to kill icetooth, dem enemies!"
Anyone can take a full-round action to make a Diplomacy or Initimidate check to order them not to join the fight, if you wish.

Mary rushes forward twenty feet and shoots an arrow at one of the goblins in the right tower. Unsure if they have cover or not, please adjust by -4 if they have cover

They indeed have cover, but it still hits!

Another goblin falls dead to the Pathfinders' arrows, as Mary lands a lucky shot straight on one of the Icetooth goblins' head.

Cha-Ka glances at the goblins, trying to determine what they're up to. "You don't plan to just use this as an opportunity to escape do you?"

Sense motive on their response to see if they're lying.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22

After relaying his impression of the goblins' response, Cha-Ka turns to his companions. "While I have a sling, I feel that I would better serve the group watching these guys" He nods towards their goblin traveling companions. "And leaving the goblins in the towers to our more than capable archers and those swifter of feet."

Cha-Ka will spend his turn keeping up with the goblin prisoners. So if they move forward, he will do his best to keep up with them. Preferably still remaining in front of them, so that he's more likely to be targeted than they are by those in the tower.

Grand Lodge

Cha-Ka:
They appear to be genuinely interested in joining the fight, but they could have an ulterior motive, like grabbing some equipment for a later escape... or just sow sheer mayhem.

"They do at least seem genuinely interested in fighting." I'll have to make sure to keep a close eye on them though. And I'll have to mention searching them to my companions once this is done.

Aspex scrambles to take cover behind the nearest boulder, grabbing for her scroll case as she crouches behind the rock. She glances up at Cha-Ka's comment. "The beasts left in the tower will be dead in a moment. It isn't worth the risk of giving any of these a weapon." she looks at the others. "Can any of you see the fire putting out that smoke?"

Move action to move adjacent to the nearest boulder, M/E to pull a Sleep scroll from the scroll case.

Ardisen surveys the scene, deciding that his allies seem to have the situation in hand. He smiles as he realises the Frostfurs are awaiting his instructions.

"Remain here Frostfurs, let my associates deal with this. The last thing I want is any of you getting hurt unnecessarily.

In truth the enchanter cared little for the goblins welfare, but their assignment was to transport them safety and he intended to see that done.

Do I need to make some sort of check to keep the goblins in line Lithrac?

I believe that's what I asked if you want this course of action. ;)
