Thank goodness, those webs have a way of drawing out the fight.

Lumo slowly wades over to the wizard. He sheathes his greatsword and speaks in a low voice. "Tell me, coward, why transport a chest of gold and a feral spark-gecko? That is a messed up pet. " After getting an answer, he points at the chest. "Anything I should know about that chest? No fireball traps on it? "

Nigel looks relieved that this fight seems to be over. Hey, if you surrender, is it possible to dismiss this web? I know for example, my grease can be dismissed along with my eagle as that is the nature of conjuration magic. Is it the same principle as your web? If so, please do as proof of your surrender! Nigel doesn't move until the web is gone.

Yeah Uther!

Tellerin looks over at Uther and gives him a thumbs up "Maybe this fellow should just take a nap while we work? I'm going to see about the wagons."

He heads over through the brush to the southern, non-webbed wagon and takes a look around inside to see if the money the party is supposed to secure is in fact there. He casts detect magic before going in and inspects the area for anything suspicious that could be a trap.

"Ha! Wouldn't hurt a fly..." Uther starts laughing again, "All those webs, and you..." He keeps a firm hold of the wizard, but laughs hard and loud for a good few minutes. Once he composes himself, he smiles and nods back to Tellerin's thumbs up, "Or at least tie him to the tree? His guard should wake up once we're gone, he can untie our friend here." As Tellerin disapears into the wagon and calls out, "Should someone fetch the horses, or can we carry the loot out of here?"

Yeah, that was kind of his desperate last bid. Hope William falls into the pit he carefully positioned and trap the other four of you in the web, leaving just Uther (and eagle) to face the two of them. Failed miserably, however. :)

At Lumo's mention of the shocker lizard, the wizard audibly moans, but seeing how the "bandits" do not have intentions to murder him immediately, he grows more bold. "What a waste... what a waste. After all my effort. That lizard was worth 20,000 gold pieces! 20,000! Jorston “Axetongue” Droaeb, the gamesmaster at Serpent’s Run, Magnimar’s famous coliseum, was going to pay handsomely for that fine creature. Oh, oh, oh..." Sure enough, when you search his belongings, you find a note in his pocket regarding the terms of sale of a non-intelligent rare magical beast for that sum of money.

"No, no traps. Just a simple alarm. Worthless now. I can dismiss it, and the web... If this um... fine gentleman could release me somewhat?" William and Uther relieves him of his wand, his spell component pouch, and basically anything that could aid in spellcasting, before one arm is released. Seeing himself disarmed of everything, he sighs dejectedly and as promised, dismisses the webs with the wave of his hand, and then with another wave, dismisses the alarm enchantment on the chest, which Tellerin verifies with his arcane sight. Tellerin very cautiously checks anyway, but detecting nothing magical emanating from the chest in the northern caravan, nor any mundane traps, he flips open the cover. Gold! Bars and bars of gold!

By the way, you should know that detect magic will not reveal magical traps.

"Yes, please, take it. Take it all. You've got what you want. You don't need me anymore, yes? I have no idea who you are, and the lighting is poor. I won't report to the authorities since I can't recognise you anyway. Yes?"

So, decide his fate...

A quick search through the two caravans reveal that the northern contains nothing else but the chest and simple travelling supplies. The southern one seem to have been the personal caravan of the wizard. A rather comfortable bedroll is off to one side, while an opened cage, presumably where the shocker lizard was kept, is on the other.

Searching through the ranger, you find 18 blunt arrows, 20 normal arrows, a tanglefoot bag, studded leather armor, a composite longbow (+2 Str) and a rapier. Meanwhile, the wizard readily identity the items you took from him: a potion of cure light wounds, a wand of web (2 charges), a quarterstaff, a spell component pouch, a spellbook and 70gp.

"Yes, yes, certainly, exercise is good. I look forward to it."

The faux-bandits tie up the wizard, and then gently lay the unconscious caravan guard beside him, figuring it would be a few hours before he awakens, by which time the Pathfinders would be long gone. A quick examination of the lizard's body finds mostly mush after the devastating combat with Lumo.

Hitching the skittish horses to the caravans, the Pathfinders drive away, leaving the belongings of the Aspis wizard and his guard quite some distance down the road. Quite a few miles further, the Pathfinders took the caravan off-road, eventually finding a well-hidden gully to hide the caravan and its gold, making sure to cover all tracks. After the auction is over, an anonymous message to the Aspis headquarters would direct them to recover their stolen gold. By which time it would be too late.

It has been a long night and the Pathfinders return back to Heidmarch Manor exhausted, but pleased with the progress of their mission. Sheila is waiting at the sitting room. She looks relieved to see you return in high spirits, but looks puzzled that you did not appear to be carrying large amounts of gold.

***OVERSEER ANNOUNCEMENT***

Two hours before the auction is slated to begin, Sheila Heidmarch calls everyone back to the theater for another emergency briefing. She appears greatly agitated and her tenor is one of immediacy.

“My friends, we have little time and much work to do, so I’m going to make this simple. While you were dealing with the Aspis Consortium, my informants in the city investigated the individuals you reported on from last night’s gala. It seems a number of them have sufficient funds to jeopardize our efforts. In what little time remains, I need you to prevent as many of them from participating in the auction as possible. My agents will provide each of your groups with a mission brief. Once you complete the task, return here to inform us of the results, and we shall quickly set you upon another mission. Again, we need you to complete as many missions as you can before the auction starts. But remember to keep your efforts clandestine and try not to kill anyone important. We’re still trying to win the auction somewhat legally.”

A rather stiff-necked middle-aged man with harsh reading glasses on his nose approaches your party. "My name is Maxillon Charndon, and Lady Heidmarch has assigned me to your team. I shall not waste time on pleasantries and get straight to business." He pulls out a sheaf of papers from a large leather bag he is carrying, flips through them quickly, then looks up and starts briefing.

"Prior to the founding of our lodge, the Pathfinder Society had few contacts and fewer resources here in Magnimar. One of our best was an alchemist and a sage name Darga Cranstone. Cranstone kept a small lab in Ordellia, performing specialized research using rare herbs that grow wild in the Mushfens. Yesterday, word from Absalom arrived that several years ago, our organization paid the alchemist an advance of over a three thousand crowns for some research. Several months later, Cranstone had only turned over half her findings, and eventually failed to complete the commission. Then for a short while, the Society lost all contact with her. Just days before the Decemvirate sent a debt collector to hunt down Darga, her apprentice suddenly sent word that his mistress was still working on the project. This kept on for several seasons, with the apprentice’s notes becoming more infrequent, until they simply petered off. While the sum was fairly significant, other matters put recouping the lost sum on hold, and after a few years, it was eventually forgotten. Now that we have again been reminded of this debt, we need you to go to Cranstone’s tower and collect the fee she owes us, with interest.”

He looks up from his notes, then continues matter-of-factly. "And please save yourself asking questions. These are all the information that I have."

So you're fully rested, i.e. all spell slots recovered, etc. Go ahead and make any purchases if you need.

The Pathfinders arrive at Cranstone’s rundown tower to find it long abandoned. The doors and windows have been boarded up and dozens of old, faded notices plastered on the door warn trespassers to keep out and that the property has been seized by the lord mayor’s office. Still, it appears like a long time has passed since anyone from the government has paid the premises a visit.

Shelia wrote:
"But remember to keep your efforts clandestine and try not to kill anyone important. We’re still trying to win the auction somewhat legally.”

William narrows his eyes in his helmet and frowns fiercely at this comment and immediately focuses his will on Shelia, trying to determine if she is as evil as she sounds. Detect Evil (not that I expect a result)

I will have a pointed talk with my superiors, this group does not deserve the services from the chosen of The Inheritor. These Pathfinders are little better than bandits, thieves and thugs themselves

Upon hearing that their acutal task os more straightforward and lawful, William cheers considerably as the group walks towards the mansion. He remains cheerful as they arrive, despite the abandoned nature of the building. Legal debt collecting, while beneith him, was a far more lawful task.

He stands next to the large lizard man as the scouts check things out, knowing his time will come if they locate anything dangerous.

I think I'm going to retire this paladin from PFS after this scenario, Pathfinders and paladins I guess just don't mix

Tellerin stretches as he looks up at the tower. "If this was a story, I'd say Darga died and her evil apprentice has been conducting dark rituals using the Society's money and their ex-master's research. This abandoned tower fits the bill for that."

"If its really abandoned, the best we can hope for is that Darga stashed the gold somewhere inside before disappearing. Though, chances for that are preeeeetty slim." He shrugs. "Since Christina is going in to scout, why don't we do so as well? She could use the backup if there's something unusual or dangerous inside. And who knows, maybe my dark rituals story is right?" That and I can't help but feel guilty that my plan last time almost got Christina killed. Or at least, I think it did. I guess I need to ask Nigel exactly what she is.

Tellerin closes his eyes for a moment. When he opens them again, the tattoos on his right arm begin to swirl, the image of the fox in them wriggling. Suddenly a fox's muzzle pokes its way out of the tattoos, followed quickly by the rest of the fox! Tellerin glances down at it and says "Want to look around Cups?"

William glares balefully at the Venture Captain, but does not detect any evil emanating from her.

Interesting you are doing this, 'cos the GMs have just been having a discussion about her alignment.

While maintaining guard, a number of the Pathfinders (or their companions) scout around the base of tower. Dead silence greets them, and there seems no signs (or smells) of life whatsoever. For a briefest moment, Christina thought she heard a faint clattering noise from the top of the tower, but perhaps it was her imagination.

Jacinth approaches the entrance carefully, but clearly no one has gone in for quite some time. The actual door had collapsed long ago, and the entrance of the tower has been blocked of by some flimsy boards. Not finding a door to actually knock on, Lumo knock on the boards, but only silence replies. Peering in between the boards, the interior of the tower is in complete darkness, although with some of the exterior light filtering in, nothing seems to be moving inside.

What're your light sources, if any?

Growing impatient, Lumo pries open the boards easily, allowing access to the ground floor of the tower. Long looted of all valuables, it contains nothing but rubbish and rats. A rickety wooden staircase curls about the exterior wall leading a good 60 feet upward to a second floor. Ever so cautiously, the Pathfinders make their way up.

The second floor is just as run down. The stairs bring you to a small room, with doors to the east and south. Not being exposed to the elements, these two doors are still standing.

Wait, was that a thump? Sounded like a small object dropping over to the south.

Tellerin casts Light (30 minutes) upon one of the copper ornaments woven into his hair. He unties the ornament and holds it up with one hand. The abandoned emptiness of the tower weighs on him in the way abandoned places tend to. When he next speaks, it comes out as a whisper "If the bottom floor was looted, I'm not sure we can hope to find any gold still left here. And if there IS gold left, it must be protected somehow, otherwise someone else would have taken it."

At the landing, he whispers "Either. Lets search this place thoroughly." in response to William's comment.

Before entering into the darkness, Uther takes his bow in hand, and starts whispering a little prayer to the The Drunken Hero, "Little help? It's tough exploring if you can't see your nose." Suddenly his bow bursts into light, "Ha, Thanks!"

Christina carefully examines the southern door, and other than finding it to be not in a very good condition, does not appear to be trapped in any way. Lumo, satisfied by her examination, pushes the door, and it opens with a loud creaking.

The collective light from the Pathfinders' various light sources cast into the room and reveal a large chamber that once serves as a bedroom and sitting room. Now, however, it is in a sorry condition. The bed against the wall has completely collapsed and the mattress covered by mold. The table and chairs are standing on rickety legs, and the shelves against the wall are full off dust, bearing nothing more than broken pieces of glass. But still, no signs or smells of life. Other than the desiccated corpse of what appears to be a woman lying beside the bed.

I kept generally to your order in the previous room as you entered this one.

The Pathfinders thus cautiously make their way into the room, Christina adamant that she heard a noise from here. Nigel quickly tosses his lighted stone to the opposite end, thus illuminating the entire room. But again, you see nothing of note. A few ominous seconds pass.

Was it a trick of the lighting? No, the three chairs are are rising into the air! Before any of the Pathfinders could react, they fly at Nigel, Christina and Jacinth. Whatever hurled them, however, has a bad aim and the chairs smash onto the floor and walls.

"Darga? Or is this our apprentice?" Confused, but suspecting magical interference, Tellerin hops towards the center of the room. He casts detect magic and starts by aiming it towards the bed and corpse. He swings his focus in a counter-clockwise direction (avoiding his party members) to try to locate if there are any active magical auras in the room.
