The magical lights seem to be the remnants of a tremendous magical force unleashes in an arcane battle. Some very powerful magic must have been used here.
Beyond the double doors is a huge library hall. Once a repository for dangerous magical books, the library now resembles a battlefield. Tables are overturned and books litter the floor. Some of these tomes float listlessly in the air as if they weighed nothing, their pages slowly turning by unseen hands. Others lie in smoldering heaps on the floor, arcing with sporadic gouts of electricity or flame. Haunting music fills the library, a mixture of Taldan nursery rhymes and lilting, arrhythmic tunes plucked on invisible strings.
..was a merry old soul, and a merry old soul was he...

"Okay, we need to find the unaltered copies of the codices detailing the lantern. That'll hopefully tell us what we need to know!"
Any skill checks particularly helpful here, DM?

![]() |

"Dangerous game, this altercation must have been. I would not wish to run into the mage that caused this."
Balon prepares himself for anything.

DM Kludde |

The party moves into the large library hall, the magical lighting effect drawing strange colored shadows, as a fluttering of wings is heard. What seems like a ball of glowing creatures turn out to be a swarm of confused little fey.
The little creatures look confused, terrified, and they chatter amongst each other with a thousand voices, they move out toward the party.
It's possible to make out some single words and phrases in the confused mess: responsible, open a gate home, kill them. They seems to have been sucked here by some magic, and think that killing the party will open a gate home.

In his experience, angry fey is a bad sign, especially when there was a cloud of them. Not understanding their words, he begins singing himself, trying to inspire his allies to greater feats against these magical foes. While doing so, he digs in his pack for an explosive cocktail which should hurt the packed mass of fey.
Standard action to begin Inspire Courage which grants +1 bonus on attacks, damage, and some saving throws. Move Action to grab Alchemist Fire if the swarm gets close enough to launch.

DM Kludde |

Balon sweeps his scythe through the swarm, but for though he hits some of the tiny wings, the damage to the swarm as a whole seems insignificant.
Tess expects the swarm to move closer, and readies a burning spell. August waits for instructions from fredrik.

At the last minute, Fredrik decides to swing his hammer at the swarm, but having a similar effect as Balon's Scythe: no damage.
Since he figured that out last round, I'll refund this round's action
Balon is looking rather bad again, staggered by the many tiny stabs of the faeries.
Elliot hurls another bottle of fire, and hits spot-on this time, burning some of the fluttering wings.

DM Kludde |

Yes, I meant Elliot. Dwarfs all look the same to me ;-)
Elliot moves clear of the swarm, avoiding the worst distraction, and then proceeds to light fire to it. The faeries - those that are still alive - start to panic and flee in all directions as the swarm disperses.
Combat over!

![]() |

Sorry to disappear and miss my turn, but had a death in the family this week that has caused me to be away from the computer. All is well considering, but time will be short through the weekend. Apologize again for missing but may miss again if before Monday. Will try to poke in at odd times otherwise.
Vasily grunts in frustration as the swarm finally is dispersed. "Tough little buggers, never seen their like." He then gets down to the business of searching for the unaltered documentation they came here for.

Perception 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (2) + 14 = 16

DM Kludde |

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Real life always takes precedence, of course, so take all the time you need.
Looking around, Tessara and Fredrik soon find the severed arm of a human under one of the library tables. Though the arm - cut off just below the elbow - has been lying there for some while, the magic of the area seems to have kept the blood in the wound fresh.
While much of the sealed wing is in considerable disrepair, the collection in a side wing of the library seems largely untouched by the battle that had come before. Bookcases that rise from floor to ceiling line the walls of this spacious library, and the table in the middle of the room is strewn with open books and crumpled notes referencing lists of books and page numbers. These jottings look fairly recent.
You may research these books, K(arcana, planes), LInguistics or Prof(librarian) checks all work

![]() |

Balon pulls out his other, more efficient wand of healing, and casts it on himself three times over the course of the next three minutes.

DM Kludde |

1d100 ⇒ 51
1d100 ⇒ 111d100 ⇒ 8
Balon uses his wand once without any trouble, but the second time he activates it, the lingering magic in the library seems to disrupt the force coming from the wand. There's a bright flash when suddenly the gravity in the library reverses, causing the destroyed tomes in the hall to fall to the ceiling.
You can all make a reflex save to grab hold of a pillar (DC 15), or take Damage: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 5) = 13
Balon thinks that with a bit more of a concentrated effort, he might avoid another surge. Activating a spell or magic item might misfire, like it just did. A concentration check may help prevent it

![]() |

Reflex: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Balon flies up toward the ceiling and hits it, becoming instantly unconscious. Takes me to -9 HP! Luckily his spell had already taken effect, and after a full minute he awakens again. Now at 1 hp.
"That was unfortunate.... I think I can avoid that happening again, but perhaps it might be easiest if I leave the room and finish refreshing myself?"

DM Kludde |

Balon 'falls' to the ceiling, and is knocked unconscious. Though he does not seem to be bleeding out, but he will probably not survive another fall if gravity reverses back to normal. How long that will take, nobody knows.
1d1 ⇒ 11d2 ⇒ 11d3 ⇒ 31d4 ⇒ 11d5 ⇒ 21d6 ⇒ 11d7 ⇒ 11d8 ⇒ 11d9 ⇒ 21d10 ⇒ 21d11 ⇒ 101d12 ⇒ 11d13 ⇒ 9

A.A. K. Arcane: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

There is still bad magic lingering around this place. We must be more carefull in the future.
He draws his rope and secures it to the pillar.
We have to try to get Balon before he pass away. Does anybody else have rope?
If someone else is already in the celling and conscious:
Fredrik says.
Secure Balon to the end of my line and I will pull him "up".
If nobody else falled to the celling:
Fredrik climbs to the celling.

Reflex 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
