Oh my!! I'm lucky to figure out when to use what I already have..! But.. Kendra has a case for the scrolls, so she can take those and try to figure them out.. She has her own tanglefoot bag, but didn't prepare her burning hands spell or acid, so the burning hands wand and acid may be useful. Since she prefers using ranged weapons (no armor), she could also use the Thunderstone.. If anything else, feel free to offer it to her.
Kendras has low light vision, so she has some visibility, but for the sake of the group, she will light her hooded lantern
Kendra lights her lantern and stands back and above until the others go through the bag, then helps herself to the scrolls and any other proffered items.
"So, let us think before we proceed. Based on what we learned from our guide, what might we need to be prepared for if we see one of the infamous Gillmen?"
Ms. Olga.. please focus.. I'm not nearly as worried about our next meal as just surviving the rest of this day.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Kendra does not have a rank in knowledge-dungeoneering. It's a "trained only" skill, so I'm thinking she cannot roll for that? If my assumption is correct, maybe someone else could do a know-dungeoneering check?

Shonne hands a potion marked "For skin like bark" to the pale, goblin-sized warrior, Hikage, and the wand marked "pyre-maker" and vial of acid to Kendra along with nearly all the scrolls (Shonne keeps entangle; I think she's the only one who can cast it. Would give you the stone but that might be concentrating the offense a bit too much.).
Shonne goes to hand Olga the potion marked: "For the treatment of minor ails, bumps, and contusions" but then stops, and draws her hand back with the understanding that she will give it to the woman only on condition of "No lambent pies."
So far:
Kendra: scroll of gust of wind, scroll of identify, scroll of mage armor (CL 6), scroll of obscuring mist, wand of burning hands (CL 3rd, 4 charges), vial of acid
Shonne: scroll of entangle, potion of cure light wounds, potion of featherstep
Hikage: potion of barkskin, alchemist's fire
Olga: potion of cure light wounds
Nantas: Looks pretty combative too... you might need the potion of cure light I've got more than me. I can fight at range if need be and I only really took it and the potion of featherstep to be the ambulance.
Triblin: Should probably get the other wand, and antitoxin (I think you and I might be the best healers in the party skill-wise).
That leaves:
wand of cure light wounds (CL 3rd, 8 charges)
alchemist’s fire, (did anyone else besides Hikage use their's)
holy water
smokestick
tanglefoot bag
thunderstone
antitoxin
sunrods (2)
@ Kendra: You cannot make an untrained Knowledge check with a DC higher than 10, but otherwise can.

![]() |

Nantas can heal herself, so the CLW potions should go to those that can't.
She can use the wand of CLW
She can take any of the other stuff but has no special skills to use it. Maybe keep it all in one place.

DM Kludde |

The adventurers take some time to inventarise and divide up Janira's gear. Ahead of them, the pit is still defiantly blocking their path.

![]() |

While everyone is dividing the gear from Janira's backpack, Triblin, being a curious sort, attempts to inspect the pit.
I am currently holding Miss Olga's wand of cure light, and will be using it, when need be. As for this hole......
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

![]() |

Kendra has nothing of healing property in her bag/book of tricks so she'll be dependent on the healers of the group if needed.
Didn't Nantas use her alchemists fire? Maybe she should take the other one? Kendra can take the thunderstone and tanglefoot bag, and maybe the rest can stay with Shonne.
Kendra also did a perception check up above.
Hefting her newly laden backpack and holding the lantern up high she looks toward the pit..
Should I detect magic in that pit? I'm not sure what might be hiding beneath those clothe strips...
She wants to be helpful, but doesn't want to use up her spells on possibly non-necessary actions.

DM Kludde |

Triblin and Kendra have a good look at the pit, and see that the edges have been rounded to make climbing out harder. The thing is definitely artificial, and looks to have been here for a while.

![]() |

"Do you see anything?"
If the conditions are too dark the bottom Shonne grabs one of the sunrods and smacks it firmly against the cave wall causing it to flare. She may drop it in if nothing more can be seen by holding it above the pit.
So:
Kendra: scroll of gust of wind, scroll of identify, scroll of mage armor (CL 6), scroll of obscuring mist, wand of burning hands (CL 3rd, 4 charges), vial of acid
Shonne: scroll of entangle, potion of cure light wounds, potion of featherstep
Hikage: potion of barkskin, alchemist's fire
Olga: potion of cure light wounds
Nantas: Backpack with: wand of cure light wounds (CL 3rd, 8 charges)
alchemist’s fire, (did anyone else besides Hikage use their's)
holy water
smokestick
tanglefoot bag
thunderstone
antitoxin
sunrods (2)
Triblin:
@Kendra: True, but you are also the one we hope to keep out of direct combat as much as possible and should you be hit (even once at this level) you are the most likely to fall thereby rendering the potion more difficult to get to or use.

![]() |

Seems a sensible distribution. Thanks for taking care of it Shonne!
Hikage peers at the pit, trying to see how wide it is, and whether Yôru could jump over it or not. Seeing that it extends only 10 feet, the wayang prods his mount. Yôru jumps over the pit!
Take 10 for jumping, total 24.

![]() |

Did Hikage ride the wolf over, or is it just the wolf that jumped the pit? Assuming it was just the wolf...
OK, so now what? What can Yoru do while he's over there?? Kendra explains, perplexed at the point of sending the wolf over alone..
I have my length of rope.. can we find a spot to attach it so we can swing ourselves over?
Does someone have enough acrobatics to get over it?

![]() |

@Kendra: True, but you are also the one we hope to keep out of direct combat as much as possible and should you be hit (even once at this level) you are the most likely to fall thereby rendering the potion more difficult to get to or use.
Oh.. that's encouraging...<<sarcastic grin>> hehehe...yeah.. feel free to tell me to hang back if I get too adventurous! Though I do hope the high initiative will allow me to get some range hits in on any monsters to make it easier for you warrior types to do it in on melee combat!

![]() |

Didn't see the 10-foot deep bit. Duh.
If it looks doable, Shonne will jump it with a bit of rope. [ooc]Taking 10 gives me 19 (or 14 if there's not room to run). Then Hikage and Yôru and her can anchor it for the rest to cross. Was there anything at the bottom? Water, spikes, alligators, cows that sort of thing?

![]() |

Our perception checks didn't show anything more than a pile of cloths on the floor below... don't know if there's a nasty surprise or if it was just the remains of some poor character who failed to jump the pit!
Clearly this thing is artificial..Are we sure it's safe to move across it? Yoru made a quick jump..climbing over on a rope will take more time, and may make us vulnerable.. any other ideas?

DM Kludde |

10 foot wide, twenty foot deep
Shonne and Hikage clear the pit and land on the other side. Just around the corner of the tunnel is a large plank, 3-foot-wide, resting against the cave wall. It could easily span the pit.
There's a dangerous piece of cloth at the bottom of the pit. Far worse than alligators

![]() |

Olga seems ashamed of herself when she taps Kendra on the shoulder.
"Eh kendra? Could you... you know... use your magic senses on the pit? I eh... I'm afraid of heights and uh... I uh... just want to make sure there's no magic monsters down there before I... well... climb across."

![]() |

"I see some sort of clothing down there! Maybe if someone lowered me, I could see what it is?" Triblin chips in. then chuckles a bit, "I don't have rope on me yet, and I can't say I have the strength to climb down with all of this armor on me."

![]() |

LOL!!! Hey now... my wizard doesn't have close to nine lives! Kendra has heard tales of all kinds of skeletal undead lurking under less suspicious objects!
Miss Olga-
she addresses the almost panicked woman with a calm, soothing voice..
I understand..Being a bit new myself, it does appear a bit daunting, but we have our brave colleagues that have shown the way and with three of us over (including the wolf), nothing has surprised us, so let's brave the pit together and save our magic for the real monsters, ok? Once our teammates lower that sturdy plank over yonder we can calmly walk ourselves safely across. What would be more comfortable for you.. first or last?
Triblin - give us just a moment to get ourselves safely across, and then if you wish to explore more, and the group agrees, you can use my rope.

![]() |

"I well yes uhm..."
Remember what father said... you're and Ogrefist, and the daughter of the chief! you can do this! It's for your future husband!!"
Suddenly Olga seems to snap out of it. With a roar and a running start she attempts to leap her considerable weight across.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (6) + 0 = 6

![]() |

assuming 6 was not enough for Olga to get across
Hmm.. so much for calm...
Kendra thinks as she whips out her rope to try to save the brawler from serious injury.
Now, about that plank..?

![]() |

![]() |

"Olga, grab!
Doesn't Olga get a reflex save to grab the other side if she falls?
If Olga falls ...
"Hey Olga?! You Ok? Check the clothes for any goodies while you're down there.", says Nantas leaning over the pit.
While she's looking she scans the pit with detect magic.

DM Kludde |

You can grab yourself while falling with a climb check, but the DC is 35
Olga tries to leap over the pit, but falls short. And into the pit.
Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 1) = 7
Battered and bruised, the brawler lands on the pit bottom. The piece of cloth looks to be a cloak of some sorts. From above, Nantas can clearly detect a faint abjuration from it.

![]() |

Wincing as he sees, and hears Olga hit the ground hard, Triblin crawls his way to the edge, "Are you okay down there? It looked like that hurt quite a bit!" Standing up, and looking at the group he offers advice,"The rope could be lowered down so Miss Olga could climb out, but may be easier to anchor it, if anyone has something that could...."

![]() |

After putting her helmet straight, she check te bag before tossing it towards the others. She then climbs up the rope offered to her.
Take 10 to climb up the rope
"Well, at least there's no magic monsters down there! Or water! I can't swim, you see..."
She exclaims a nervous giggle.
"Triblin, could you..?"
She nods at the wand she gave the gnome while making sure her cooking gear is still intact.

![]() |

"So much for stealth." Shonne stoically notes to Hikage and his wolf companion, in reference to the clatter of utensils and armor on the ground twenty-feet below. She continues sliding the plank across the pit.

![]() |

Olga overhears the comment while climbing the rope and replies in between heavy breaths:
"I'm sorry... for my... lack of... stealth. I... am not... used to... all this... exercise. I just... have to... get married... is all. I hope... I will be... as skilled... as you are... one day... Shonne. *huff puff*"

![]() |

Rolling her eyes at Olga's excuses...Kendra turns to Nantas,
Let's anchor my rope so Olga can get a hold of it and get herself out of there.
Once Olga is safely up above again, and the rope tucked back in her bag (mind you Olga is still on the same side as Nantas and Kendra, because she didn't give them a chance to get across the pit before taking her impulsive "leap"), Kendra checks the plank to make sure it's sturdy than swiftly walks across to join the others.
Alright Miss Olga.. now that you've had your flying lesson for the day, please come join us - and PLEASE do take CARE on the way over!, her exasperation edging into her voice, almost belying her thoughts...
What a loose cannon...I hope she has more skill at fighting, because I can't rescue her there...

![]() |

Assuming Nantas takes the plank as well..putting them all on the far side of the pit together...
Let's see what we might have here, Kendra says as she studies the cloak without touching it...
knowledge-Arcana: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

![]() |

Once Olga gets to the top, Triblin gets to work with her wand! Once finished, he ties the wand to his belt and slowly makes his way across the pit via the plank.
Wand of CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5Wand of CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
"I have to say Miss Olga, that you should be a bit more careful. You could have really hurt yourself trying that stunt of yours!" Triblin said, in a worried tone. He wasn't used to the other races being as spontaneous as his race.

DM Kludde |

Olga keeps the cloak?
The tunnels continue on, leading deeper beneath the Kortos Mounts until they eventually open into a large cavern. What must have once been beautifully carved reliefs and inscriptions have since weathered heavily, their features dulled and softened to the point that it is hard to distinguish what each once depicted. A wide tunnel exits the cavern on its far side, and blue-burning torches line the passageway’s walls.
These carvings look to be quite different from the smaller picograms found on the cave walls earlier. These looks to be older, more faded too. Most of them are completely worn, but a few of them may still be decipherable.
Give me a K(religion or history) check, or a linguistics check if you want to decipher one. Alternatively, you can try Perception or Appraise (but at a harder DC)

![]() |

Can I take 10 to get a 16? If not, I'll roll!
Triblin looks at the walls, running his fingers over the artwork, trying to figure out as what they mean. Certainly older than he, the gnome turns around and speaks, "We need to write about these! It doesn't seem that these have been disturbed for a while now, and if I recall, no one in the society has made mention about this cave before Miss Janira!"

![]() |

Hikage nods silently at Kendra, then waits until everyone is gathered before moving on, remaining on Yôru's back. His eyes glint with marvel as he beholds the interior of the cave, fascinated with the potential discovery they've just made. However, his expertise in all manners of historical artifacts is very limited.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

![]() |

Olga overhears the comment while climbing the rope and replies in between heavy breaths:
"I'm sorry... for my... lack of... stealth. I... am not... used to... all this... exercise. I just... have to... get married... is all. I hope... I will be... as skilled... as you are... one day... Shonne. *huff puff*"
Skilled - a slang word meaning "svelte."
"And? Kendra? Anything special about the cloak? I thought Nantas mentioned it was magical?"
"Let me see it." says the brusk elf. Shonne grabs a bit of the corner and studies the fibers intensely for a long moment.
Spellcraft (quiet Olga/ID item): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Edit: Guessing that's a failure.
Further Edit: And she can't even do that because you need detect magic first to ID items.
Shonne hands it back to the woman and says: "Yes. It will keep you warm."

![]() |

"We should keep moving." And she does so with spear in hand.

![]() |

Nantas also inspects the cloak casting detect magic ... spellcraft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
"Slight abjuration ... likely protection of some sort ..."

![]() |

man.. and I thought I was on top of this thread... how'd you guys jump so far without me? Oh.. that's right.. work will do that at times LOL!
Well, we knew when it was in the pit there was some faint magic aura around it, but since no one made any never mind, and Miss Olga was so quick to grab it, I let it go.. I can do another detect magic if desired...
She waits for a response..then relaxes slightly once Nantas does her own check..
She watches as Olga dons it with no more than a nod rather than tucking it carefully into her backpack..
Are you sure Miss Olga.. that the cloak is not too...warm for you? Might it not be a hindrance lest we be thrown into surprise battle around the next corner?
Is there no end to impulsive choices here..or perhaps all that schooling I had has made me a bit...too deliberative...
Then, with a sigh...she shrugs and turns to the next challenge...
Hmmm.. these walls... fascinating.. She breathes as her hand glides over the nearest group of icons...
knowledge-history: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
knowledge-religion: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
well so much for those skills! My lucky knowledge streak may have just ended...
Hmm.. I'm not sure what these mean, but it might be worth noting on paper... who was our secretary by the way??

![]() |

Hmmm.. do I need to choose just ONE at a time? If so, sorry 'bout that..I got excited at using skills I actually have...(because I'm afraid I may be less than useless in battle!) will remember next time :) Is there a way to get notifications on this thread? I haven't found anything like that..

![]() |

It'll be in your profile, under the campaigns tab.

![]() |

Thanks. I did figure that out, and even bookmarked it on my browser..but a lot of message boards allow you to get email notifications of new posts, so I was looking for that. No problem :)

![]() |

Are you sure Miss Olga.. that the cloak is not too...warm for you? Might it not be a hindrance lest we be thrown into surprise battle around the next corner?
"Too warm? I guess the magic still has to warm up then, because it sure is the hells alot colder than a moment ago, by Erastil's beard! Cloaks from the north work a lot better, magic or not! Anyways, what are ye all staring at them funny writings? Don't we have a mission at hand? It sure doesn't seem like the time to worry about ancient graffiti, you see!?"

![]() |

aah.. hadn't thought of that. good point

![]() |

Yes Miss Olga.. part of that mission is to map out the tunnels in these caves, as well as to find out what we can about the Gillmen... so.. these cave drawings may be part of discovering more about these caves and about the Gillmen.

DM Kludde |

The carvings looks to be from History and Future of Humanity, the principle holy text of the god Aroden. The carvings focus on parables that feature Aroden’s 12 guises, meant to illustrate his hopes for humanity: the artist, beggar, craftsman, farmer, fisherman, hunter, merchant, scholar, shepherd, soldier, tailor, and thief. Though horribly faded, the holy text looks to be written in a mix of Aquan and Azlanti, an resembles a version that is different from the one that is currently used in the Starstone Cathedral - it looks to be an earlier, more primitive version.
Kendra and Triblin manage to decipher one of the carvings: The Beggar is depicted kneeling with an alms bowl raised high, representing Aroden espousing humility in all, lest they forget their shared humanity.
Olga, despite her apparent disinterest, manages to decipher a second one: The Thief is depicted stealing a gem from a shop while whispering a prayer, an allusion to a passage saying that larceny—though illegal—is a form of praise, for anything worth stealing is also worthy of praise for its craftsmanship.
