Caelben looks worried as Ranor gets hit but breaths somewhat more easily once he sees Ranor is able to heal himself.

Imrana's magic bolt takes a small chunk of flesh out of the zombie's arm. The rest of the party sends a flurry of attacks at the shambling hulk of a man, but through some twist of fate, none of them land home.

The zombie again attempts to smash the paladin to little pieces.

This is harder than I thought. Raven had spent plenty of time practicing her ice darts, but trying to throw them around her allies is proving extremely tricky. I'm gonna run out of water at this rate. She pulls out a smaller amount this time, doubting it'll do much but hoping that if she can figure out how to hit the creature it'll get easier with time.

As the gnome runs past, Imrana lowers her wand and begins to cast a spell with her free hand.

Sorry for the delay. Yesterday got away from me.

As Aloisius makes a hasty retreat out of reach, Imrana shoots a magical ray at the zombie. The ray goes wide, though. Ranor swings at it, landing a solid blow, but it doesn't seem to faze it much. Raven launches another spell, but being unused to the chaos of combat, she misses badly. Kevan slashes again at the beast, taking another small chunk out of its leg. Caelben attempts to stab it with his spear, but just barely misses.

The zombie then takes a swing with its Morningstar at Kevan, but he manages to duck at just the right moment.

Imrana breathes deeply, the scent of undead bringing her back towards her time with the Great Nex in his war against Geb's nigh-endless undead armies.

Raven shudders as the zombie goes down. "I really hope there aren't more of those around." She raises her arms in an upward pulling motion and some of her spent water floats upward. She returns it to her waterskin, salvaging what she can.

"Actually, now that Raven mentions the possibility of more of those zombies being around here.....does anyone mind if we try to go back up for a few minutes so I can ask the grounds keeper if I can borrow his axe for a while? Someone mentioned we needed slashing weapons just now..and just in case we run into another one of those zombies..I'd rather be a bit better prepared next time"


The book does not register as magical. You quickly scan through it. It's a journal that used to belong to one Grishan Maldris, the youngest brother of Colson Maldris. The journal is filled with gossip about many of his fellow classmates and their families. Apparently, Grishan thought himself something of a spy, and was feeding this information to the former head of the Liberty's Edge faction.

Now that combat is over, Deris comes into the room with you. "I would be happy to lend you my axe. Unfortunately, I left it at home today. All I have with me is a saw."

The group moves carefully through the southern door, down a long corridor, and into another room. Water drips from the double-vaulted ceiling and trickles down the walls to pool on the floor. Bone shards of a hundred skulls litter the room like shattered seashells. Wide stairs climb to the west. Narrow stairs dive to the north. On the south wall, an open doorway gapes, a carved relief depicting a massive battle filling the archway over the door. The rest of the walls are filled floor to ceiling with nooks that house ancient, but drenched, skeletal remains. In the center of the room sit twelve school children in a circle on the floor. One child seems to be silently telling a story, her arms moving rapidly as she makes scary faces.

Suddenly, Deris bursts out: “See! Alive! I knew it! That's her, my daughter! That's Cassiel!” He then rushes over to the ghostly image and sits down on the floor next to her. He starts talking to her, telling her how much he has missed her. But the image pays no attention to him, continuing on with its story as if nothing has happened.

Please move yourselves into the next room.

Imrana stops immediately at Deris's outburst. She shakes her head, her eyes filled with sadness.

She speaks quietly, so that only her nearby companions would hear.

"It is so terrible to see someone so hurt that he cannot see reality anymore."

Imrana will follow at the back of the others. I'll wait to move her until I see how everyone else places themselves.

Yes. I was not even thinking straight. I will tend to your wounds. The undead in this area got me worked up into a frenzy to cleanse this unnatural aura.

Ranor grabs his wand and heals anyone else who requires it.

"Don't we need to check that room out first? We might end up with some zombie(s) at our back if we just keep going forward...oh, the kids are here?...Well then we might as well take them with us and head back"

Aloisius stays back, keeping an eye on the passage to the other room just to be safe. "Ya know, it might be a bit more intriguing if we could hear the story, too."

Kevan, Ranor, and Caelben suddenly hear scrabbling sounds coming from the stairway to the north.

Kevan points to the stairs to the north with his spear. "Something is up there." He moves to the stairway to look up.

As Kevan peers down the stairway, he can just barely make out three humanoid shapes rushing up the stairs towards the group.

"Something is coming! Three figures!" Anticipating more undead, Kevan casts a blessing of Cayden Cailean on everyone. He allows Caelben to bottle up the stairway with his spear if he wants.

Ranor prepares his shield and flail as the three creatures descend. He places himself in the way to block the creatures from reaching anyone else.

Caleben takes up the spot behind Ranor, aiming his spear in a such a way to take care of anyone (or anything) that happens to end up in front of Ranor while bracing the end of it firmly down

Making sure she has enough to do the job, Raven floats a single dart's worth of water from her waterskin and holds it in midair, ready to launch it forward. Since she's no longer at all sure about her aim, as before she decides to try and conserve water.

As everyone moves into position, Ranor spots what is making the noise. Three humanoid creatures with long, sharp teeth, and pallid flesh stretched tightly over their starved frames come racing up the stairway.

These are ghouls, undead creatures that can paralyze their targets and transmit disease.

Kevan casts a blessing on the party, while Ranor moves in to position to bottle up the stairway and defend the rest of the group. Caelben backs him up with his spear. As the creatures rush headlong at the party, the lead individual impales itself on Caelben's spear, running several steps, driving the shaft deeper into its body, before it collapses into a heap at Ranor's feet.

Aloisius, Raven, and Imrana each launch their own unique bolt of magical energy at the ghoul, and all three hit, felling the creature is a blast of mystic power.

The remaining ghoul launches itself at Ranor. But he is able to fend off the undead being quite handily.

He can't hit on a full defense from Ranor, so I won't even roll.

You can always roll a nat 20. A 20 will hit no matter what my AC is.
